Herbert Benjamin CONVERSE was born 5 Mar 1889 in Colo/New Albany Township, Story Co., IA. Herbert was a bank clerk in Cherokee, Alfalfa Co., OK, in 1910 and soon after he married Georgia A. They moved to Cimarron Township, Blaine Co., OK, by 1920, where Herbert was a farmer. Later they moved to Oklahoma City by 1930, at which time they had 10 children.

Herbert descends from a long line of Massachusetts CONVERS/CONVERSEs:
Deacon Edward CONVERS (1590-1663) --> James (1620-1715) --> James (1645-1706) --> Josiah CONVERSE (1684-1771) --> James (1725-1811) --> James (1749-) --> Ephraim (1779-1867) --> Benjamin (~1811/1812) --> Herbert S. (1851-) --> Herbert Benjamin CONVERSE

I'm a very, very distant relation, so I'll defer staking a claim to the photo for now. I have one contact who is more directly related and will pass this information along.

What more might you know of George and Herbert?
I found a pair of brothers of that name who were sons of Elias B. CONVERSE (Jr.) and Harriet FIELDS of Livingston County, Michigan. Might these two be them? George was born in 1845 and Herbert in 1853. I don't know of any connection to Blaine County, OK, but then I haven't tracked them forward from the 1890s.

Earl W. Converse Death, January 1929

My mother, Maxine J. Converse Deady, was the daughter of Earl W. Converse through his second marriage to my grandmother, Nancy E. Miller Converse Shively Coburn. During their marriage, they resided for the most part in the western part of Pennsylvania. Earl W. Converse also had a son, Stanley H. Converse, through his first marriage to Katherine Roenick (or Roenig) in 1918 with most of this marriage residing in the Rochester, NY, area. There are several family trees in the public portion of Ancestry.com which purport to show Earl W. Converse deceased in the state of Washington in 1977. There is apparently another Earl Converse that this death is referring to since my grandfather, Earl W. Converse, died on January 11th, 1929, in Ford City of pneumonia. I am going to post his death notice which appeared in the Kittanning, Pennsylvania, newspaper, the Simpson's Leader-Times on January 12, 1929:

"Pneumonia Causes Death of E. Converse Stricken with Severe Cold Nine Days Ago, Pneumonia Ensued Causing His Death

Ford City Jan 12-Earl W. Converse, aged 34, of Bloomsburg, passed away yesterday afternoon at the home of his mother-in-law, Mrs. R.L. Miller, Third Avenue. Mr. and Mrs. Converse and daughter, Maxine, came to Ford City some time ago to spend the winter with Mrs. Miller.

Stricken with a severe cold nine days ago, it developed into pneumonia which caused his death Friday afternoon at 2:25. He is survived by his wife, little daughter, and his father who resides at Rochester, N. Y.

On account of the critical condition of his brother-in-law, Frank Miller, the body will be removed to the home of D. I.Guthrie, 1137 Seventh Avenue. Funeral arrangements have not as yet been made."

I also have an article that appeared in this same paper on January 16th that details the funeral at the home of D.I.Fair a few days later. Anyone who would like more information on this story, please contact Patrick Deady at deadyp@peoplepc.com

This is in my line. My great-great grandfather happens to be Lewis. Lewis was a Civil War hero for the Union troops, and had 8 kids with a woman named Salena Young. Young died at a young age and Lewis remarried to a woman named Angeline Shilling, and had 7 kids after that in Tracy, Iowa. The 6th of the 7 kids was named Charles Cloe Converse, who is my great grandfather. Charles had 3 sons and 3 daughters with a woman named Susie Hiner.(One daughter named Iris Dreibelbeis is still alive living in Clinton, IA). One of his sons, Carlos Cole Converse is my grandfather and had 1 son and 2 daughters with Peggy Jean Shifflett. His son, Charles Clair Converse is my dad. He has 2 sons (Cole Christopher Converse and Conner Clair Converse) and 1 daughter (Courtney Christine Converse) with Karen Arlene Kelderman. Hopefully this information helps you some.

Re: family history

Hi Geocon,
I have a document sent to me by my sister, which shows Frank Mosby Converse. His father is listed as Albert Converse, born in Lyme, NH in 1821, but moved to New Orleans around 1841. Albert worked for J.P. Whitney &Co., shipping agents, who were succeded in business by Cammack & Converse. He died in 1885 of disease contracted while he was a soilder in the Confederacy. He was a corporal in a troop of calvery. He was married to Mary Mosby of Kentucky. She died in May of 1889.

Their children were Frank Mosby Converse , Alice Converse, and Albert Converse. Frank Mosby was born in New Orleans, and Albert in Arcola, LA. However, the family originated in Massachusetts when Deacon Edward Convers and his wife Sarah arrived in Salem, June 12, 1630. From there some of the family seems to have moved south, through Conn, New Hampshire, New York, Philadelphia, and then to Louisiana. I can rememeber my grandparents talking about Grandpa Frank's family coming from Philadelphia.
Frank married Basilia Colchada in Eagle Pass, TX May 31 of 1847. He died in Bracketville, TX on May 4, 1886.
I do remember my grandparents (Christobel, my grandfather, was the son of Mary Converse, sister to Cecilio).
I hope you find this information helpful.
Best wishes,
Momlorrainer

Bassilia was born in Laredo, TX in 1847, and was the daughter of Hilario Colechado and Refugia Colchado (formerly Hernandez de Cardenas). Basilia died on Sept. 15, 1883 in Bracketville, where her four children were born.

The children of Frank Converse and Bassilia Colechado were:

Mary, born Dec. 22, 1860 (she was my great great grandmother)
Albert, born Sept. 19, 1872
Cecilio, born Nov. 22, 1875
and Frank, born April 15, 1880 (died at the age of 10).

Re: Marquis M. Converse

There are three Marquis Converse in my family tree but I don't believe any of them had a middle initial of M. Here is what i've got however:

ALPHEUS CONVERSE, 6 (Ensign James 5 (21), Ensign Edward,4 Samuel,3 Sergeant Samuel, 2 Deacon Edward 1), baptized 23 August 1752. He was a soldier in the American army in the Revolutionary War, in company commanded by Lieut. Pain Converse, 11th regiment militia, and at New York in 1776. He married, 17 March 1771, Jerusha Elliott, daughter of Capt. Joseph and Jerusha Bury) Elliott. The Elliotts came to Thompson Parish about 1750, viz:-Thomas and his two sons Francis and Joseph. For Revolutionary War Service of Capt. Joseph Elliott see under head of David Convers 5 (p. 67), who married his daughter Rachel Elliott. There is ground for belief that Capt. Joseph Elliott helped cover the retreat at the Battle of Bunker Hill after the ammunition was exhausted. Fatigue and exposure brought on fever from which he died at his home, 12 August 1775, in his forty-seventh year.

Miss Larned's History of Windham County, Conn., mentions Alpheus6 Converse as Constable in Thompson in 1785.

Mr. William G. Hill says that he lived at the homestead in Thompson previously occupied by Thomas Converse. Temple's History of Palmer, Mass., which calls him "Captain," contains a record of his family. This authority states that he died 8 May 1825, that his wife died 5 March 1817, that he was Selectman in 1799, on committee for rebuilding meeting house, on committee for hiring an assistant minister, on committee to arrange for call and ministry of Rev. Simeon Colton, and, that in the war of 1812, he was a delegate, to the convention protesting against that war. The war was unpopular in the river towns, as tending to cripple commerce and restrict state rights.

Alpheus and Jeruqha (Elliott) Converse had eight children as follows:
ALPHEUS CONVERSE, 7 born 27 Feb. 1773; died
ROSANNA CONVERSE, 7 born 30 May 1775; died 3 May 1778
JOSEPH CONVERSE, 7 born 21 Jan. 1777; one account is that he settled in Vermont. Temple's "Palmer" says he married, 16 April 1801, Polly Smith, and that he died 13 Jan. 1851.
DEACON BENJAMIN CONVERSE, 7 born 13 Oct. 1779; died, in Palmer, 18 May 1859. He married Margaret Brainerd. (123)
CHARLES CONVERSE, 7 born 21 Feb. 1781; died 8ept. 1810; married Hannah Smith.
ALPHEUS CONVERSE, 7 born 27 Feb. 1783; died 20 Dec. 1816; married Polly Baldwin in 1802. Feb. 1816.
MARQUIS CONVERSE 7 born 25 Sept. 1785; died 12 Oct. 1842; married Sophia Lyon. (121)
ADELPHIA CONVERSE 7 (a daughter), born 28 April 1788; died 3 play 1789.

MARQUIS CONVERSE,7 (Alpheus,6, James,5 Ens. Edward,4 Samuel,3 Sergt.Samuel,2 Deacon Edward,1), born in Thompson, Conn., 25 September 1785; settled in Brimfield, Mass.; died 12 October 1842.

He was a merchant and one of the leading mean in all matters pertaining to the welfare and best good of the town. He was an active worker in the Congregational Church. In politics he supported the Whig party; served in public office with ability, representing his district in the legislature, and was postmaster for nineteen years, from 1823 to 1842. He had the sincere esteem of the entire community, and after his death a beautiful drinking fountain was erected to his memory by his heirs, the town furnishing the foundation, piping and water. His landed possesions in and around the village were large, and he built the first hotel in the village.

Marquis Converse married, 27 April 1808, Sophia Lyon, who was born 9 July 1785, and who died 15 October 1851. She was the daughter of Col. Alfred and Lydia (Ballard) Lyon. Col. Alfred Lyon moved from Holland, Mass., to Brimfield about 1800. He ws born 4 March 1753, and died 5 December 1813. Lydia Ballard was born 18 November 1756, married 23 January 1777, and died 29 December 1822.
Marquis and Sophia (Lyon) Converse had eight children:

MARQUIS LYON CONVERE,8 born 1 Feb. 1809; died in New York City, 28 June 1874; married Mary C. Mr. Foster died, in Chicago, 29 June 1873, leaving two daughters: Mrs. Symes and Mrs. Cheesman, who both reside in Denver, Color.
CHARLES ELLIOT CONVERSE,8 born 2 March 1818; died 27 July 1862; buried in Brimfiel; married Sarah Wheeler of New York. He was in mercantile business in New York. Samuel,2 Deacon Edward,1) born in Brimfield, Mass., 1 February 1809; engaged in mercantile business in New York, where he died 18 June 1874. His remains were buried in Brimfield, Mass. In the beginning of his career he met with a heavy loss, which might have discouraged a man less determined. He went to New York City at the age of twenty and started upon a wholesale dry-goods enterprise, but shortly after becoming established was burned out. Undaunted, he started anew in the same line of work, and later went to Charleston, S.C., as a member of the firm of Pomeroy, Lyman & Converse, a house that conducted an extensive wholesale dry-goods business. When the Civil War broke out he returned to New York City where he continued his connection with the same business house as its purchasing agent, a position which he held until his death. He married in Columbus, Ohio, Mary Picket, who was born in Delaware, Ohio, died in Brimfield, Mass., in March 1892, at sixty years of age. She was daughter of Dr. Charles Picket of Delaware, Ohio.
Marquis Lyon and Mary (Picket) Converse were the parents of four children:

MARQUIS P.
Re: Looking for information about Louise Hochenedel who married Albert Wright Converse

We're related!
I am Cynthia Noll Lamb.
My mother was Edith Louise Noll.
Her father was Louis Noll (The middle name may have been Milton.)
His father was Adam (none) Noll born 28 March 1836 Duseldorf Germany.
His mother was Mary (none) Schneider.
I have her father as Frederick Carl Schneider.
I have her mother was Maria (A.?) Hochenettle.
As well as I remember from my mother and her sister, Mary Louise Noll, Maria Hochenettle lived in Alsance, on one side of the river, and Frederick Schneider lived Baden (born 2 November 1823).
Supposedly they met on the ship coming that docked in New Orleans where they were married. Frederick and Maria moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee. They was supposed to be an extensive German settlement there. The other family members may have moved to Texas or somewhere out west.
I'm getting confused, but it seems like Frederick left Germany because there were not enough finances to support everybody, there was a brother in ill health, and Frederick could take only a limited amount of money out of Germany, so he took goods with him. But I could have him confused with Adam Noll.
I have a photograph of Mary Schneider Noll when she was 18 years old and then some older photographs. I have a few items that belonged to her, such as her opera glasses and a couple of pieces of furniture.
Augustus Nolty was a relative was related to Mary Schneider Noll. There was an Augustus Nolty and Julia Nolty who were cousins. They lived in Memphis, Tennessee. I think Augustus (Cousin Gus) was a 20-something-degree Mason and he received his recognition in Washington, DC at the Mason site.
There was something about a cabinet made by their father.
Anyway, I live in Atlanta, Georgia, and would enjoy straightening out some of the details, if we can.
The Schneiders and Nolls are buried in Forest Hills Cemetery. They were buried there. They did not live there.
I heard my mother referring to Aunt Addie and Uncle Carl, etc., so we must have the right family.
Also, when Mary Schneider and brother were twelve years old or so, their parents told them to select their own religion, that the parents were tired of all the religious fighting. When the children walked by St. Paul's Episcopal Church, they heard German music, and joined the church. There is a stained-glass window at St. Paul's that was given by Mary Schneider Noll.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Cynthia Noll Lamb
678-613-2195
cnlamb@gmail.com or cynthia-lamb@att.net

We're at a dead end ...Always have been fascinated by the Zalmon Green Mrs. Hebediah Wood parents as well....too many Wood's here?? Maybe Priscilla and Putnam meet through the Wood's?

I copied the above from a previous message. The problem here is that it was Meribah Hayward/Heyward who married Daniel Wood in Upton MA. in 1779. She married 2nd
Zalmon/Solomon Greene of Upton and they had 5 or 6 children in Upton.
