Looking for a William Conway, born around 1858

I'm writing this under my mothers account, so bear with me...
I'm looking for a William Conway born around 1858, somewhere in Canada. He was married to an Ann(a) LaLonde (I believe she was born in Michigan, her fathers name was Baptiste) and his childrens names are John (my grandfather, who was married to Margaret Boroff), Minnie, and Thelma. Any help would be appreciated. I've found some records pertaining to William, but not that were concrete enough for me to accept! :)
Alicia

Patrick J Conway b Feb 1846, Mayo

I am looking for any information on my g gfr Patrick's family - brothers, sisters and if possible his parents. Patrick emigrated to the US in 1865. It is possible that he had a brother called Thomas who travelled with him to the US but I have not been able to verify this on US immigration records. I'm afraid I don't know where in Mayo he was born.

Many thanks
Adrian Conway

Seeking Lineage of Edwin Conway, England to Lancaster Co., Va.

I am new to the list and I am trying to find the parentage and siblings of my 9th great grandfather , Edwin Conway (Connoway), born 1610-1620 in Worcester, England. He immigrated to Virginia and died before 20 Jan 1664 in Lancaster County, Virginia.

Edwin married Martha Eltonhead daughter of Richard Eltonhead and Anne Sutton from England. Richard from Lancashire and Anne from Staffordshire, England.

Some have said he is the son of Viscount and Secretary of State, Edward Conway and wife Dorothy Ann Tracy, under James I and Charles I. I don't know who the children are of this family and if my Edwin could be a son or not.

Any information would greatly be appreciated as I have really hit a brick wall on this one.

Marianne Dillow
Illinois
Hello, I am interested in the Conways of Portaferry, County Down or thereabouts. My great-great grandfather, George Conway b. @ 1855, was the captain of a lightship on Strangford Lough.
He married Ellen Falloona and had 11 children: Frances (Maccean), Mary (Barclay), George, Patrick Roger, Thomas, Hugh John, Katie(Smith), Esther, Florence, Cecelia (Ford), and Agnes (Stirling). Before his marriage, he lived on the Ards Peninsula in Down. His sister Mary married a man named Woodburn and died in Liverpool. His sister Anne died 5 Dec. 1853.
George, Anne's and Mary's parents were Isabella McNally and George Conway. Isabella's parents were Kate Keogh and Edward McNally.
Does anyone have Conways from this area?

Conways in PA, AR, OK

Searching for ancestors of the following Conways. Have some information on all of them, but would like to know more, if anyone has them or their descendants in your family trees.

David John "D.J." Conway
Born in Ireland, sometime in the early 1800's, immigrated to US around 1850-52. Believed to have been married to Anna AIKENS(sp?) who had one of their children, Robert John "R.J." on the ship 8 days prior to landing in the US. They lived in Erie, PA for a while and then bought land in Carroll County, Arkansas.

Robert John was born 2-2-1850/52. Since he was born on a ship, the place of his birth is unclear. He had recorded it as Ontario, Canada (which is more likely) but his children have said Ontario, NY. Married Agnes Anna BOYELAN (could be BOLAND) who was born in Lancaster, PA, 1853/55. Robert John died 4-3-1939 in Ft. Smith, Arkansas. Agnes Anna died 6-1-1920 in Drumwright, OK.
They had the following children:

David John
b 4-29-1875

James
b. 10-19-1876

Arthur
b. 10-24-1878

Robert (my Ggfather)
b.6-4-1881

Edward
b. 3-10-1883

Annie (Nan)
b. 12-23-1885

Frances Marie (Marie)
b. 3-22-1889

Mildred Agnes (Millie)
b. 3-11-1895

Conways in Iowa and the Midwest

I'm looking for information regarding the family of Clair J. Conway of Sioux City, Iowa. He was born August 7, 1878 in Galena, Illinois. His parents were E.A. Conway and Elizabeth Brehany Conway. ( I'm not sure what the E.A. stood for, I've seen Edmond A, Edmund A, Edward A.)
E.A. Conway was in the coal industry as the head of Conway and Hellman, and later the Conway Coal Company until his death in 1907 when Clair took over management.
In 1912, Clair married Sarah Wells Conway. They had three sons, Clair jr., Robert, and Francis. Clair J. Conway died at the age of 64 in 1942.
Though I don't know how they are related, other important names are Peter Conway (a miner in Butte, Montana) and Peter's brother, Thomas J. Conway, married to Mary A. Conway.
I also have information on Sarah Wells Conway's families (the Wells' and the Campbell's) I can post if anyone is interested.
Any information would be appreciated but especially regarding military service and the life of Clair J. Conway prior to 1925. Also info on E.A's life and family and especially parents and grandparents. Thanks.
CONWAY

I am just returning to my family history research after a long absence. I would like to construct a family tree for CONWAY.

A good start would be to locate ancestors and descendants of a John Conway, who married an Agnes Service and had a son William Conway, born in 1875 in Belfast, Ireland, who died in 1959 in County Durham, Ireland.

It is my ultimate aim to have a worldwide family tree for all people of the CONWAY name. I would appreciate any family tree information from anyone in the world who shares this same name within their families as I hope to make connections with them all.

If anyone wishes to send me information, either a Gedcom or a file attached to an email would be very welcome. I would be quite happy to send anyone who requests it all the information I have in return. I run Legacy 6 as a genealogy programme on my computer.

Thanks for your assistance, everyone. .
Conways of Chicago

My great-grandmother was Dorothy Conway of Chicago, 1895-1954. She married Louis Bristow and moved to Los Angeles sometime between 1910 and 1920. Both her parents and grandparents lived in Chicago. Her parents were Robert E. Conway and Catherine Brady. Her siblings were Justin, Marion, and Johanna. She may have had more, but these are the ones that I know of. Her grandparents were Michael and Joanna. Michael Conway emigrated from Ireland sometime between 1850 and 1860, but I don't know from which part. Any information on any of these people, especially Catherine Brady and Michael and Joanna Conway would be greatly appreciated.

JohnConway (1844-1923)

I am seeking additional information about my great, great, great grandfather, John Conway. In particular, I seek verification of the name of his first wife, which I believe to be Mary King (not sure on this point). I also seek verification as to his place of birth, which I beleieve to be Ireland (or possible Matawan, NJ)

The following is text from my grandfather's "Past Remembered" document (my grandfather was William A. Conway (born Newark, NJ in 1910, died 2006 in Summit, NJ).

The Conways came here from Ireland to escape the Irish potato famine landing in Keyport, New Jersey sometime in 1851. Once here, they took a tenancy on a farm in Mattawan. The family consisted of my great grandfather, Maurice Conway, and my great grandmother, Ellen Welsh Conway. Additionally, there were several children some of which were born in Ireland. The names of the children are very vague, but I do remember visiting some of them.

My great grandparents, Maurice and Ellen rest today at St. Joseph’s graveyard located in Keyport, New Jersey. Their grave stones can be found in Section 0, plots 137&140(Conway/Cavanaugh). The grave stone indicates Maurice lived from 1815-1882 and Ellen, known to me as “Little Grandma,” lived from 1825-1916.

The stone also lists three sons buried there: Charles, James, and William. My great grandparents had eight children all together: John, Margaret, Elizabeth, William, James, Mary, Joseph, and Charles. I know much more about William’s life than the others’. As for the other Conway children, I must rely on memory.

One Conway son was a New York City policeman. He may have been the eldest, because he had acquired the skill of breaking horses to the saddle. I always thought that skill had come over with him from the Old Country. He used his skill for breaking the two-hundred horses which were brought in annually from the West to be trained as remounts for the mounted force. His family was quite large. They lived in the Bronx some place near a brewery. Of this I am sure because, on the one occasion, I remember visiting on a very hot summer Sunday afternoon. We traveled there by trolley, Hudson tubes, and subway. The weather being very hot, the kids of the family took me down to the brewery to enjoy the cooling effects of the water aerating tower. It really was cold.

Another Conway son was also a policeman serving for the Plainfield, New Jersey force. Like his brother, he also had a large family. Dad and I visited there, at least once, when Peg attended Holy Trinity High School located in Westfield, New Jersey. A grand son of this family was in Peggy’s class; his home was in Scotch Plains, New Jersey.

William Conway was a carpenter working in the Philadelphia area. He was involved in the labor movement and was killed in an accident at a Philadelphia construction site. At the time of his death, he was engaged to Catherine Murphy nicked name “Kate.” It is speculated that William met, and became engaged to, Kate through his sister, Elizabeth. William’s sister was working as a domestic in New York. Kate also had a sister, Maggie, working in New York as a domestic during the same time period. As Elizabeth and Maggie were in domestic service for prominent New Yorkers it seems logical the two may have known and been friendly with one another; possibly introducing William and Kate. Another possible connection may have occurred through William’s previously mentioned eldest brother who was making his home in the Bronx while serving on the Bronx police force. This chapter remains open.

Elizabeth married into the Cavanaugh family and her name appears on the family head stone at St. Joseph’s cemetery. The story goes that Elizabeth married young; only fourteen or fifteen years of age. Her husband was eighteen. Elizabeth’s husband had some type of mishap and died shortly after the marriage. Left to fend for herself, Elizabeth became a "lady maid" to a Mrs. Major, the wife of J.P. Morgan’s business partner in association with the Morgan Guarantee Trust Company. The Majors lived in New York City and Englewood, New Jersey. Elizabeth earned a good pension from her employment with the Majors; she rented a home in Englewood where she lived to be 100 years old. She shared her home, and life, with “Little Grandma,” after Maurice's death.

Charles Conway was another brother; his history remains to be told. We know that he is marked on the Conway/Cavanaugh stone at Saint Joseph’s Cemetery in Keyport, New Jersey: see Section 0, plot 137 and 140.

James Conway, yet another brother, is listed on the head stone with his Father and Mother; his story also remains to be told.

Margaret Conway (1845-1901), married a John Mulhall(1837-1907). She and her husband, John are buried in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. There is not much known about the Mulhall offspring. I recall meeting a Mulhall daughter in Jersey City around 1916 or 17. She married a man who was president of a railroad; I think his name was Loomis.

John Conway, my grandfather, was born in Mattawan, New Jersey and was older than his brother William. He became a printer and finally a linotype foreman for the “Daily Advertiser” in Newark which is no longer in publication. John was twice married. No records for his first wife have been found, she may have been a Mulhall. She died around 1883 or 1884 leaving him a widower with four children: Eleanor (Nellie), Elizabeth (Lizzie), Mary(Mamie),and Joseph. John was also well-known for his gardening skills, maintaining a large backyard garden at his future residence (383 Summer Ave), where he grew grapes and the largest turnip my father had ever seen.

My grandfather’s first child by his first wife was a daughter, Mary (Aunt Mamie). She was a secretary for the Edison Company at the West Orange Plant

The couple’s second daughter was Eleanor (Nellie) who married into the Donnelly family. Her husband was a hatter who worked in the felt hat industry in Orange Valley, New Jersey. Together, they had four children: Edward, Robert, Eleanor, and Gertrude. They also had a big black dog named “Bounce;” though the two dogs looked nothing alike, the Donnelly family dog was the source of our dog, Bounce's, name.

Elizabeth (Lizzie) was the couple’s third daughter. Lizzie married Eugene Mulvaney. She and Eugene were politically appointed to manage the poor house on Clifton Avenue. They lived on Clifton just north of Park Avenue. Together they had six children.

Joseph was the couple’s youngest child; he died in early adulthood while working for a Newark newspaper. He was killed when a roll of news print fell from a tray as it was being unloaded. Joseph left a wife, Alice McLaughlin, and two children: Mary and Joseph. Once grown, Mary wed Eddie Long. The couple lived on Summer Avenue in Newark, New Jersey just north of the funeral parlor where Aunt Maggie Maskell was waked.

Philip was Lizzie and Eugene’s first child. In 1917 Phil tried to enlist in the Canadian Air Force. He was too young, but did succeed later in enlisting into the United States Air Force. He crashed and died in England while training. He is buried at St Michael’s Cemetery. He was laid to rest in a military funeral; his casket lashed on a gun carriage pulled by four horses. Philip’s funeral may have been the first at St. Mikes of the WW 1 causalities.

Mary was Lizzie and Eugene’s second child; she married Eddie Graham.

Betsy was the third child. Betsy married Jack Farrell who covered the Trenton news and was later City Editor of the “Newark Evening News.”

Gene was the fourth, was nick-named "Mo Jo." Despite a serious infection in the bone of his right arm during childhood, he went to Georgetown and became a dentist. His wife was a possibly a Fisell. Her younger sister was in Kathy’s class at St. Elizabeth’s.

Billy, my age, the next to youngest child, joined the Benedictines went out to Latrobe, Pennsylvania. He developed TB and died before final vows.

Lizzie and Eugene’s youngest child was John who we nicked name “Santa Chon.” The last time I saw him he was applying for admission to Delbarton.

There is an old picture taken in the backyard of 383 Summer Avenue. The picture is an image of me, my father William Conway, my grandfather John Conway, and his mother, my great grand mother, Ellen Conway who we knew as "Little Grandma". She died about 1916, and is buried in the family plot in Keyport. She and the mourners made the trip to Mattawan by train: CCRR of New Jersey.

Philip Mulvaney, Lizzie’s oldest boy, was on the train making the journey to “Little Grandma’s” final Mass. My father told me Phil was much impressed with the Cavanaugh lady who also made the trip. She had married a railroad official and was loaded with diamonds: a girl’s best friend.

My grandfather’s second wife was my grandmother, Catherine Murphy; William’s one time fiancée. My grandfather and Kate had only one child; my father, William A. Conway. My father as born on June 10, 1886 at my grandparent’s home on James Street in Newark, New Jersey. He was named after his Uncle Willie, the Carpenter.

Kate (Murphy) Conway and her sister, Aunt Maggie Murphy, had some accumulated money. Maggie had been a house keeper for a retired Civil War General; possible General McClellan who organized the Army of the Potomac. Maggie owned a house in Lakewood, New Jersey and went back to the Old Country every year.

Kate, after she married my grandfather, John, bought the house at 383 Summer Ave in Newark, and built the flats next door – a three-story, six-family dwelling which supplemented the family income; both of which she prudently put in her sole name. John predeceased her. After my grandfather’s death on April 9, 1925, some of his children sought an accounting of his Estate; there was none as Kate held all her property in her own name and Dad was her sole child. My grandmother lived on for another two years. After her death on August 1, 1925 , the house passed under New Jersey inheritance law to my father, William A. Conway.

Aunt Mamie (Mary Francis Conway) continued to live on at 383 Avenue. Her sister-in-law, Alice Conway, and her two children, Mary and Joseph also moved into the house. Alice’s husband, Joseph had been killed while on the job in Newark by a paper roll that fell from a tray. Alice kept the house while the others worked. Mamie commuted by trolley car to the Edison company in West Orange, New Jersey until she retired about 1930. Lizzie, Nellie, and Joseph Conway grew up at 383 Avenue and lived there until they married.
CONWAY from Ireland to OH and KS

I am researching my husband's family, whom we believe were from the Sligo area. Does this family sound familiar to anyone? If so, I would be pleased to exchange information with you.
William CONWAY and Johanna [unknown maiden name]whom we believe were born in Ireland had the following children, most likely in the Sligo area:
Hugh CONWAY b about 1827, Daniel CONWAY b 14 Feb 1828, Cornelius CONWAY b about 1830, and Elly CONWAY b about 1834? There may also have been other children born in Ireland.
The family emigrated to Ohio and lived in Brown, Highland, and Clinton counties perhaps as early as 1838, but definitely by the 1850's. Other children born in OH include: William b about 1838, Thomas b about 1840, and Michael b after 1840.
While in America, the children married:
Hugh CONWAY to Margaret HEALEY, prior to 1866, most likely in Hillsboro, OH
Daniel CONWAY to Bridge REEVES, 22 May 1854 in Fayetteville, Brown, OH
Cornelius CONWAY to Bridget GIBBENS, OH, date unknown
Elly CONWAY to Jane LYNCH 28 Apr 1852, Hillsboro, Highland, OH
William CONWAY, Jr., to Bridget BALL 2 Jun or 12 Jun 1864.
Michael CONWAY to Johanna HEALEY 14 Aug 1864
Thanks!
Colleen
Death of daughter of Robert Conway (Marion County, WV)

From page 4 of the Wheeling Register (dated 13 May 1889):

On Friday evening of last week, Mr. & Mrs. Robert Conway, who reside near Barracksville, Marion County, lost their only child - a little daughter - in a sad and shocking manner.

The parents had gone out to do their milking, leaving the little one in the house playing with its toys. It was seated in the kitchen near the stove in which there was a little fire only. Not long after they had reached the milk yard Mr. Conway heard the child crying, but thinking it had just noticed their absence, he did not hurry back to the house.

On returning to it, however, he discovered the child under a bed and its clothes on fire. It was seated with its little hands up to its forehead and face, trying, it seemed, to prevent that part of its head from being burned. Mr. Conway soon extinguished the flames, but the child was so badly injured that it died on Sunday. One side of it was burned to a crisp.

Conways Dublin/Ohio/Florida

I'm helping with my wife's ancestry. She's a Conway and her family was originally from Dublin. Her grandfather, Patrick V Conway, immigrated to Cleveland in 1923. Three of his siblings, Mary, Jimmy, and Nellie also immigrated to Cleveland in the early 1920s. Two other siblings, Cecil and Eddie, remained in Dublin.

I've hit a brick wall with Jimmy or James J. Conway. He immigrated to Cleveland in March 1923 at the age of 18. At some point he ended up in Orlando, Florida, possibly as early as the 1940s. He married and had several children, Jim, Pat, Kathleen, maybe another. They would have been raised in Florida. I have some information that suggests Jimmy was involved in the US Army, possibly as a career.

I'm also looking for information on Cecil and Eddie Conway of Dublin. They were probably born in the late 1890s. Their father's name was James Conway and mother's maiden name was Malloy.

Please contact me at any of these names look familiar. Kind Regards, Rob

??? Conneway from MD, died in Civil War, wife Jane Hull

Trying to find this Conneway (spelling later changed to Conway) whose family was from Maryland. He died in the Civil War near Ft. Necessity, PA. Children's names were Lloyd, Daniel, Michael, Johnny, and Lizzie. Wife's name was Jane Hull. Since he already had 5 children by the time he enlisted in the war, I'm guessing he was born sometime in the 1830s. Does anyone know about Conneways/Conways from MD? Son Lloyd had a farm near Somerset, PA, which may have come from his father's family. Any clues would be appreciated.

Samuel Conway, Somerset Co, PA 1800

Looking for information on the Samuel Conway who lived in Somerset County, PA in the 1800 US Census. I believe he had a son named Samuel Conway who was born in 1803 in Somerset County. I would like to find where Sam the elder lived before 1800, where he was born and who his wife, parents and other children are. The Samuel Conway born in 1803 moved to Elk and then Clearfield Co., PA and eventually bought the Reynold's farm in Sabula, Clearfield Co., PA in 1845. I have the Conway famly traced after 1845, but not before 1800.
Thanks
Joel Clark, jdcslc@pennswoods.net

I am up against a dead end with my ggrandfather Henry Conway. The only info I have on him is that he married Martha Jane Flick (b. 1856 d. 1942)and they had one daughter Zella Augusta Conway (b.1883 d.1946) This all occurred between the 1880 and the 1900 censuses and in and around Montour, Pennsylvania. By the time I find Martha again, she is remarried to Jared Miller with numerous offspring. Zella was the only offspring of Henry Conway and Martha Jane Flick. Does anyone know anything about Henry?
