Hello,
Nice to get your email. Thomas Harper was my maternal grandfather. I do remember him as he died when I was 7 or 8 yrs old in India. I know nothing about his family other than him having a brother, Fred and a sister, Majorie (I think).
Their father was an English tea-planter (Charles Bearpark Harper). Their mother is noted on Tom's Birth Certificate as "Unknown'". The family explanation was that she must have been a local Nepalese girl (possibly a servant). This is all I know. Fortunately my mother (your cousin) is alive and well in Perth, W Australia. Her email: ipconwell@bigpond.com

I'm sure she'd be happy to hear from you.

Best rgds,
Stephen
Hi there,

I am the Grandson of Fred Harper. I noticed your message on the board and was curious if you knew anything of Fred and Thomas' mother. I understand she passed away during her sons' birth, but that is all I know.
Any info you can spare would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks and best regards.

My Great Grandfather was Charles Bearpark Harper who managed a tea plantation in the Darjeeling area. My Grandfather Frederick Harper, born in Darjeeling (Full name Edward Frederick Harper) passed away in Bootle Liverpool in 1984. He was born to Charles and a lady who's identity we do not know, as she passed away during his birth. During his days Fred led an amazing life travelling esp. the United States. When he arrived in the UK he spent time as a merchant seaman during WWII (and survived 2 torpedo strikes). He had 2 sons and 1 daughter, Ronald Harper (my father), Keith Harper and Muriel Harper. Ron and Keith moved to Australia and Muriel lives in England.

Hello, I am Bill Long in Crofton, Maryland. I am a greatgrandson of Henry F. Conwell of Lewes, DE. I've corresponded with some of your previously. I maintain a Conwell Documents Website at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cfii/Conwe...
. I'm offering to post, on that website, any documents that you have that you'd like to share with other Conwell researchers.
I strongly encourage all males having the surname "Conwell" to do a Y-DNA test in conjunction with the Cornwell DNA Project. [I am the administrator of the Long Surname DNA Project which has 240+ members. DNA tests have broken-down many brickwalls and providing exciting clues for many Longs.]

I am Julia, and I am researching the Conwell-Cornwell line.
My first ancestory in the U.S. was Francis Conwell who came tto the U.S. in 1632 from England. They returned to England for a short time and then returned to Maryland. Francis was the ancestory of the first yeates in AMerica.
ARe you related to Capt William Conwell of therevolutonary wwar? or to his brother Thomas. They both built Fort
Conwell in Pennsylvania.

Hi, I am Julia and have done alot of research on the Conwell-Cornwell Line. How are you related to Richard Conwell of Xenia Ohiio? or are you?
I haave the line back to Francis Conwell who came in 1632 from Barbados. In those days they went down the coast of Africa dn the crossed the Atlantic to Barbados, before proceeding to Maryland Delaware.
Do you also have Arthur Conwell who married Elizabeth Davenport? She had married prior to her marriage to Arthur.
Dear Sandra,
Nice to receive your recent email. Your friend and I must be related! I am Anglo-Indian, born in Calcutta, as were my siblings and both parents and their families.

My father is Edward Eugene Conwell born 24.7.1929. His father was James Eugene Conwell born 20.1.1904. James married my grandmother, Florence Eversly in Calcutta and they had 2 kids, my father and his sister, Chloe. My grandmother, Florence was of West Indian blood and this caused tension with the Conwell side, in those more prejudiced days.
Consequently, my grandmother Florence was ostracised by her sisters-in-law (Eunice and Olive - I'd never heard of a Gerald Edward). So my father and his sister Chloe had little to do the Conwell side. We have a photo of Edward Arthur Conwell and Maude. But we always thought that he was born in England and that she was of Portugese (or at least, Goan)stock.

My father became a well-known hockey player in the late 1950's, playing professionally for top clubs in Calcutta as well as representing West Bengal at State level. He married another Anglo-Indian from Calcutta (my mother, Irene Harper).
Our family emigrated to Perth, W Australia in 1970 where me and my 2 siblings grew up. They are all still living in Perth, and my dad is still in good health at 82 years of age.
My folks keep in touch with many of the Anglo-Indian (AI)diaspora through the AI 'world reunions' which are held periodically.

Best rgds,
Stephen Conwell
Olive Kathleen married Henry Percy Smith 15.5.1918, I found these details on the family search site, the updated version. hope this is of some use, if you know any further details of these family lines please let me know. It would appear that the families were born and raised in India for many generations, although they were british.

Hi, I'm new on this thread. Researching Arthur Conwell of Maryland, hoping to link him up either to the Delaware Conwells and/or to my own in Massachusetts. Here's what I have: Arthur Conwell, born 12 July 1751 in Maryland, recorded as age 24 in the 1776 Maryland Census in Lower Potomack Parish, Frederick County. He was in the Rev. War. After the war he married Elizabeth Davenport, born 1742/1746 in Frederick County, MD, or near Winchester, VA (data from two different sources, but the two locations are not far apart). Arthur and Elizabeth were married on 22 May 1781 in Berkeley, (West) Virginia (Virginia Marriages 1740-1850). This was pretty much the frontier at the time. They lived there for a while, having at least one child (Richard), then at some point Arthur and maybe Elizabeth joined William and Jehu (John) Conwell at the "Conwell Fort" at Dunlap's Creek in Fayette County, PA. This leads me to think that he must have had some relationship to the Delaware Conwells. Arthur died there about 1799, age 47. Elizabeth later moved with her children to Xenia, Ohio, died there on Dec. 28, 1838, and is buried in the Woodland Cemetery.

Note that Jehu (John) Conwell's wife was Elizabeth Stokely and not Elizabeth Davenport.

Grateful for any comments or corrections. I suppose nobody knows who Arthur's parents were? Cynthia Conwell Cook

My grandfather told me that Abraham B. Conwell, who was his great-grandfather was a descendant of Betsy Ross. Abraham B.'s grandfather, Abrahm, married Betsy Ross' daughter.

My family tree shows an Abraham Conwell that was married to Rebecca Claypoole, but I can't find the connection anywhere. I have only found a Rebecca married to William Conwell. Does anyone have any information on an Abraham Conwell born in probably the 1700's?

I am trying to find out more about Samuel Conwell, his wife Jane Atrip, and his daughter Minnie Elizabeth who married William Woods, divorced, and then married Carl Kalen. I believe that I have his name right. Minnie and Carl later lived in the Vigo County Indiana area.
I found a Minnie E who was born to other parents in the same area at about the same time and am trying to clear up the mystery about her birth. Were there two Minnie E Conwells? this one went by the nickname of Lizzie. Thanks for any help.

Hi,
Yes the Conwel line was in England in the late 1500 and early 1600. but the line originated in Ireland in the 1200 -1300. Somewhere in all my research I have the name of the Irish King who was a early ancestor. the Conwell's came from Essex county in England. We are still trying to prove the tie between Arthur Conwell and then back where Yeates was a brother or an Uncle.

I bought a kit and had my cousin take the test as he is a direct male heir and I am not. The results showed a better than 95% probability of connection to the well researched Yeates Conwell line, and I have heard from a descendent of that line. One interesting thing to me was that the bulk of the markers show an Irish heritage, though I know that the Yeates ancestry that is apparently so far known traces back to England.

Re: Conwell and Harper ancestry in India : Anglo Indian

My grandfather (my father's father} Charles Bearpark Harper I understand came from the UK and worked as a tea planter at Dooars Darjeeling. When Charles Bearpark (Harper) retired he migrated to Rowella West Tamar Tasmania. My father Thomas Harper had a Brother Frederick Harper, who went to the UK and lived in Bootle, Liverpool. His sister Marjorie Beaurepaire Bearpark (Harper) was still in Kalimpong India from what I know. The name "Bearpark" was dropped and my father Thomas and his brother Frederick used only Harper.
My mother's (Myrtle Harper nee Hutchins) grandfather Thomas Hutchins came from Shipton Mallet, Somerset UK. He came to India around 1795. He enlisted in Bath on 17 May 1815. Embarked on the "Marquis-on-Huntley" on 22 December 1815 and landed in Bombay India on 16 May 1816.

Hi, my family is 3rd generation Anglo-Indian from Kolkata, India and surrounds. My paternal great grandfather was EDWARD ARTHUR CONWELL, whom I believe was born in the UK and migrated to India. His children were born and raised in India.

On my maternal side, my great grandfather was THOMAS BEARPARK-HARPER (later shortened to HARPER). He came from the UK to manage a tea plantation in Darjeeling, India.
Any information on either or both of these people or surnames would be greatly appreciated.

Do yhou know anything about an Arthur Conwell who married an Elizabeth Davenport?
We have not been able to find a record of their marriage in Berkeley Co. Virginia
There were 8 children in this marriage. Elizabeth had been married before she married Arthur, but her first husband must have died. She married Arthur on 22 May 1781

My name is David Conwell Clark and my Dad middle name is Conwell also. Seem's around 1840 the Conwell's married the Proctors. My grandfather although a Clark middle name is Proctor. I found a document online of a wedding present giving to the Proctor's by the Conwell's a few slaves. In Mason County Kentucky. All of the Conwell's and Proctors are from Kentucky. And my grandmother still lived there until her death in 1972. Her maiden name is Outten and there still are Outtens in Maysville Ky which is Mason Ky. I grew up in Independence Ky.

I should also add our Conwell's came from Virginia. I have found proof of this online too.......

Hi Rob
I'm Noseysmum.
I can't for the life of me remember why I was looking up Muriel Hooley, it's a worry, probably for someone else.
I have two friends who are first cousins, I'm related by marriage and I've been doing their tree. Both have Foster & one has Antrobus. I'll get my paperwork out now and have a look for connections.
Here's my email tina.oz@bigpond.net.au
I'm in Rockingham West Oz.
Cheers
Tina

Have you pinpointed which county in Ohio your Stephen lived in?

My Conwells came from Virginia to Greene County between 1800 and 1810. One of the sons was Stephen, but I don't find a "Harry" listed in descendents. But there were at least two other Stephens born to descendents of the original family, which was large.

What is the time frame you're looking at?
