Robert Cooke abt 1818; Mary Ann Ireland abt 1818

I am looking for Robert Cooke born 1817-1820 in Sussex England. He emmigrated to Australia about 1840 and married Jane Catherine Windley (nee Usher) in 1861. He was a widower at the time of this marriage. He was previously married to Mary Ann Ireland and travelled out on the James Patterson (Pattison). His parents were most likely William & Elizabeth. I know his father was a carpenter and Robert became a storekeeper in Australia. I am looking for his ancestors. Mary Ann had a child in Australia in 1849 and had died before 1861. There is no record for her death (that is her)on the BDM and no cemetery record (as yet). I suspect she was buried in Camerdown Cemetery as that is where her parents are. Her parents were John Walpole Ireland and Esther Horseman. I would be glad of any death info

Hi Debbie, I have all info you need on this family. I descend from Johns brother Peter. John Augustus Cooke (1850-1928), and Mary A. "Mollie" Evans (1853-1897) had 8 children: Jesse Cooke (1874-1874), Lizzie Tazwell Cooke Richardson(1875-1954), Sarah Lee Cooke Richardson(1878-1930), Henry Alpheus Cooke (1879-1940), John Richard Cooke (1882-1948), Thomas Augustus Cooke (1885-1951), Ernest Talmadge Cooke (1887-1956), and Peter G Cooke (1891-1964). John Augustus remarried Mary Estelle Hinton when Mollie passed away, they had 3 kids together: Julian Macon Cooke (1908-1974), Frances M Cooke Burchett(1909-2007), and Eugene Francis Cooke (1917-1973). I have a lot more info on this family and you are welcoem to any of it, just email me at smithste11@students.ecu.edu and I will give you what ever you want. I have the cemeteries they are buried at as well. I know some of Ernest's, Lizzie's, Lee's, and Tom's sibling family. So it is very nice to meet you. I am happy I know of a decendant of John that is still around.

Cooke Family Ireland to Ontario Canada to USA somewhere.

Time to repost my elusive Cooke clan. Robert Cooke, a County Cavan Cooke originally, eloped with Sarah Jane Griffith, d/o Richard John Griffith Bart., and Jane was promptly and totally disowned forever. This same Griffith gentleman was key in the evaluation of Ireland.
Robert Cooke and Jane Griffith were probably married in Ireland but Robert may have used an alias to avoid detection. The couple fled Ireland and at the same time his brothers Richard and Joseph and maybe Thomas came over settling in Leeds Grenville in what is now Eastern Ontario, Brockville vicinity. Robert and Jane settled right in Brockville and 5 children are recorded in Anglican records there. About 1840 Robert Cooke died leaving Jane penniless and ignored by her wealthy father. She had little choice but to farm her children out to Robert's relatives and she left Brockville with a genleman from the USA. They married and produced Jane's second set of children.
Jane died somewhere in the USA and never was in contact with her first marriage children again.

Timing of the elopment would be mid 1820s.She may have been married to the American man as "Jane Cooke" or as "Jane Griffith".he liked "Jane" better than "Sarah Jane".

One of those children did contact his 1/2 bros in Ontario and went to Ireland to try and staighten out the Griffith confusion, w/o success.
I know NOTHING about this second family and I am hoping anyone reading this and identifying with the story will answer!

Re: Cooke, Cook, Clark, Brushwood

Hello, I see this is an old thread so I'm not sure if you'll see this. Lela Virginia Cook Brushwood was my great-great-grandmother. Her daughter, Lela Inez, was my grandma. Lela Virginia's father was William Marion Cook, born 1/20/1857 in De Kalb, GA and died in 1939. His father was Columbus Marion Cook, born 9/19/1833 in Henry, GA and died 1862. His mother was Mary S. Robertson (1833-1861). Columbus Cook was the son of John Cook (1791-1875) and Mary Lang (1807-1849). The Cooks can be traced back many generations to England. Unfortunately, all I know about Lela Virginia Cook's mother is that her name was Sarah.

After Lela Virginia died, Oscar Brushwood Sr. remarried. During the interim, his and Lela's two children (Lela Inez and Oscar, Jr.) went to live in Everett, WA with Oscar Sr.'s sister Florence Brushwood Lewis. Although Oscar Sr. attempted to contact them, for some reason Florence hid his letters, and the children never knew about them until they were adults.

I hope this information helps you!

I am also searching for family of this Moses Cook b. 2 Apr 1786. My problem: my grgrgrandfather was Moses Cook, his son was Benjamin Owen Cook, my grandfather was Louis E. Cook. I had an elderly cousin, now deceased, who specifically said that my grgrgrandfather Moses Cook (b. abt 1810 in KY) was definately related to Edward and Ann Cook. There seems to be a large time period between Moses Cook b. 1786 and Moses Cook b. abt. 1810. That is part of my problem because I cannot connect both Moses Cooks. I would really appreciate any help.

My line is similar to yours through Experience Mitchell who married Jane Cooke. However, in the next generation, my line has Elizabeth Mitchell whereas yours has Sarah Mitchell. Elizabeth Mitchell married John Washburn December 06, 1645 at Bridgewater, Plymouth, MA.

Cooke Family of W. PA - Virginia Gates McWiliams and Charles Cooke Pittsburgh and Mars, PA

I am looking for descendants of one Virginia Gates McWilliams (Cooke) b. Aug. 23, 1865 (either Westmoreland or Armstrong Co., PA) d. Jan. 2, 1930 at her at her residence 312 N. Euclid Ave., Pittsburgh, PA. She was married to a Charles Cooke who died at his residence in Mars, PA in Feb. 1940.

Virginia Gates McWilliams was the daughter of William McWilliams 1825-1892 buried at the new St. Clair Cemetery Pittsburgh and his wife Margaret Wise Williams 1827-1868 of Westmoreland Co. PA. Margaret W. Williams in turn the daughter of a Rebecca Freame and Capt. John Williams.

I am a somewhat distant relative who is descended from this man's great aunt Elizabeth Freame (Johnston) - and I understand that her portrait was passed down in the McWilliams family (it was owned by Isabella Johnston Williams, the sister of Margaret Wise Williams in 1885, but she died childless in 1894. and would have passed the portrait down to either Alexander McKinney McWilliams or more likely his sister Virginia Gates McWilliams (Cooke), also of Pittsburgh (d. 1930) - wife of Charles Cooke.

I understand that Virginia had a son named Edward McWilliams Cook, husband of Anna Truxall. He died Dec. 15, 1960.

Please do get in touch if you have any information on this family!

Do you know anything about a Thomas & Catherine who had a William who you can't account for after 1870?? This family is making me CRAZY!!

I did see a family in Thrapston that sort of fit, but if I know that that William stayed in England then I would know that that is not the right family, but I can't confirm that either.

Am looking for info on Thomas and Catherine Cooke; both born in England probably in the 1820's. I know they have a son William. Census's have William born anywhere from 1849 to 1853. Sometime in the 1870's William goes to Canada; gets married to Mary Ann Anderson in 1878. I'm pretty sure there is an Abbott connection as William and Mary Ann's first son is William Abbott, but I'm not positive which side it comes from. I have some possibilities but nothing fits really well.

Thanks

I've recently done a bit of research on Joseph Garnault Vautier (c1825-1896) and his wife Amy Byron Cooke (c1842-1933) and I have some details of their family.
Joseph appears to have prospered by buying broadacre land around Brighton and Ellwood in Melbourne in the early 1850's, then either subdividing them or simply holding them to sell later. There is a Vautier Street in Ellwood named after him.
I'm more than happy to pass on the info that I've gathered.
Bert Roberts
millers@netspeed.com.au

Re: Joseph Garnault Vautier married Amy Byron Cooke

Hi,
I am not sure how far back you want to go or if you know this already, but the Garnaults and Vautiers are old Huguenot families. The first Garnault in England was Aymé Garnault who settled in London following the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. These Huguenot families of jewelers and silkweavers settled in the Spitalfields area. For reasons of faith and inheritance, the great silk weaving families had a tendency to marry into each other's families which include Delahaize, Deheulle/Dehulle, Vautier, Garnault, Romilly, D'Ager/D'Agar, and Ouvry/Ouvri. Some of the more famous names are Sir Samuel Romilly, as well as the Parker-Bowles family which originally inherited their property through a Garnault spouse. After making a considerable fortune in silk weaving, the Garnaults are largely responsible for the New River Company being implemented in the late 1700s.

I am a direct descendant of Aymé Garnault and have done a lot of research over the past few years on all my interconnected family history. I have seen that the descendants are very proud of their descent from the original Huguenot families, using the last names as middle names in each generation. I can say with reasonable certainty that the Joseph Garnault Vautier you mentioned is a direct descendant of these families.

I did a quick search and found that his father was Daniel Vautier. In the book "From Strangers to citizens: the integration of immigrant communities...", there is mention of Daniel Vautier which states that i 1747 he was summoned by the Weaver's Company to serve as one of the officers. This is the chapter about "Huguenot Master Weavers: Exemplary Englishmen." He was also a director of the French Hospital at one time. There is a lot of information about all these families out there -- it depends on how much you want, but I still find a lot of new info each week.

Hope this helps. If you have any questions, let me know.

PS: if you knew all this already, please excuse the lengthy response!
Inscription Robert Esquire Cooke 1755-1845. Based on photographs, this third Marker looks to have been placed after the larger monument was placed in the 1950's.

I have been working with the family of writer John Eston Cooke. That Cooke family claim to be a descendent the Mayflower Cookes and also have Cooke relatives in the Jamestown settlement.

This might be what Catherine Cooke Roundtree might mean. She might be a Jamestown Cooke with Cooke relatives on the Mayflower.

My main research is on Doty Cooke Alden Mullen. The Cookes of John Esten Cooke claim to be related to all four. They were shoemakers and I believe the incident at Hanover Shoe Company in Hanover PA during the Civil War was connected.

She was the daughter of Alfred Cooke.

William Cooke's wife was Mary Ann SPICER, mother of your Alice Maud Mary Ann Cooke (who married George Belmore Garstin). Which line of Garstins are you descended from? You are related to Mabel?

my email is ndlovu8@gmail.com if you ever come back and see this?

Maiden name of Emily Henrietta, wife of John Henry Cooke, was COOKE ;-)

John Henry married his cousin. She was the daughter of Alfred Cooke ....... here is John Turner's entry from "Victorian Arena - the Performers":

COOKE, Emily Henrietta. Equestrienne - daughter of Alfred Cooke Married John Henry Cooke With Batty's company, at Astley's, in 1852, with her brother Eugene, in 'Jeannette and Jeannot', a laughable petit ballet Billed as 'Petit Emily', with William Cooke's circus, Birmingham, in 1853. Later in the year, back at Astley's, she re-appeared, 'returned from the Continent'. In 1856, she was described as 'The Peri of the Ring, "she dives through her balloons like a seabird, and drops with her daintyest precision, and in a model attitude, upon her cream coloured steed, breaking a heart with every broken paper". At Hengler's, in Liverpool for the 1860-61 season, every evening performance saw her classical representations, 'This elegant and artistic act of equestrianism continues to meet with the greatest enthusiasm from crowded and brilliant audiences'. She remained with Hengler's, until 1865, at various venues. The dashing flights by this Premier English Equestrienne, through thirty balloons, were complemented by her equestrian poses, and participation in many spectacles in the arena. She received frequent benefits. In return, she appeared for one night only, at benefits to her brother Eugene.

In 1870 she was in the USA, with John Henry and George Cooke, members of Stone and Murray's company. Her last-known appearance, with Hengler's, was in London, for the 1875-76 season. In 1897 she was said to be the mistress of the robes, and that many of the beautiful dresses to be seen in the arena had been designed and made by her.

hope this helps? my email is ndlovu8@gmail.com
