I am a ggranddaughter of john and lucy jane freshour. My grandfather was Charles F. Cooksey, a brother to your Mary Adeline Cooksey known as 'addie'. Mary Adeline cooksey lived with her parents in eastern OK in 1900. they made a mistake on her name and called her May Cooksey. Between 1900 and 1910 she married Josh Gabriel and had two children. a boy and a girl. Her husband was killed in an accident at the saw mill where he worked so Addie went back to live with her parents who were living in Garvin County, OK. John Cooksey died in feb 14 1910 of pnuemonia and was buried in Antioch Cemetery in Antioch, OK. so he is not listed with Lucy Cooksey on the 1910 Census. Addie married Ab Blaklely in Atoka, Atoka County, OK.[at least i think that's where they married.] Ab Blakley is my great uncle uncle as he is my father's mother's brother. Addie's children Josh and Rhoda went to live with their grandparents. on the Gabriel side. There are still Blakleys living at Atoka, OK. Ab's mother is buried at Wards Chappel Cemetery there. She died in 1955.
If you are looking for info on Lucy Jane check Emmitt Starr's book 'History of the Cherokee's'. The Lucy jane you find will be her Aunt since she had no offspring. Lucy's father is Joseph Freshour.
more info later. It's very late. m
I am also interested in tracing Susan Cooksey of Mo. She was born in Ky and moved to the St Francois, Mo. area in the 1840's, I believe my gggf, David Cooksey was her brother. There also was a John Cooksey in the same area that I believe was a brother. Also a Lydia Cooksey (married a Lawson)maybe a cousin?

I have Cookseys and Freshours in my family tree. It would help to know some dates and locations on your inquiry. When were your gg-grandparents married and where? When (approx) and where did your gg-grandmother die? When and where were Addie May Cooksey and Albert Horace Blakeley married?

I don't show any Blakeleys etc in my Cookseys or Freeshours but...the Freshours are a peripheral line not an allied or direct line so don't have much research on them nor a lot on the allied lines that married into our main Berry tree thru John Cooksey & Susanna(h). Below I have listed the main Cooksey and Freshour names who married into our main Berry line thru the Ramming and Shepherd allied families.

My John Cooksey was born Feb 8, 1806 in SC. Died Mar 29, 1882 in Colusa Co, CA. Married ca 1825-1827 (prob either in SC or TN) Susanna(h), nee u/k, born ca 1804 SC? NC?. They had 8 known children. Susanna(h) appar died between 1860 & 1866 in MO (prob Morgan Co). John married Mrs. Margaret Ernest Oct 12, 1866. They migrated to CA ca 1874 with John's daughter, Jane Cooksey Harrison and family.

Freshour who married into our Shepherd line: George Wilson Freshour born Nov 26, 1850 MO, died June 24, 1938 in Russellville, Cole Co, MO. He was son of David Freshour/Freshly? and Martha Ann Boothley according to a posting on Findagrave.com. He married Margaret "Maggie" Elizabeth Shepherd, daughter of James Thomas Shepherd, Sr. and Jane Sims, who was born Mar 28, 1850 in MO on Oct 7, 1875 in Cole Co, MO. Maggie died Oct 22, 1904 in MO (Prob Cole Co). They had no children. George then married Malinda A. Templeton, b Dec 9, 1858, Cole Co, MO; died Sept 9, 1951 in Callaway Co, MO. Again According to posting on Findagrave.com, Malinda was daughter of Absalom G. Templeton & Louisa Jane Johnston. Seems like they had a daughter at least, maybe more children but don't have that info at my fingertips. Hope this will be helpful to you. Gayle E.

Hi Kat,

These Hezekiah Cooksey postings remind me of research I did many years ago in connection with both our Barnes and Masons of Greensville Co. VA.

I have the following William D. Mason in Amherst Co. VA where Miles Cooksey moved his family and these notes. If you might know of this Mason line and ancestry, believe me I would really appreciate your assistance.

Miles Cooksey m. 1789 Elizabeth Lanier who was born 1769 and they had Susan S. Cooksey born 1790. Elizabeth Lanier died before 1793 and Miles married 2nd Susanna Lanier born 1773 and they had Elizabeth Cooksey born 1794. Miles Cooksey and Elizabeth Lanier's daughter Susan S. Cooksey married William D. Mason 3-10-1810 in Amherst, VA.

Thomas Lanier, grandfather of Susan and Elizabeth Cooksey, died 1798. At this time, Susan and Elizabeth were small children. I have not researched the land records for Thomas Lanier but I would imagine Miles Cooksey would have been custodian of these lands and probably sold the land when he moved to Amherst. This is only conjecture but research should show if Thomas Lanier had a trust or something for his granddaughters.

Tax records of Amherst Co. VA:
1809 Miles Cooksey, John Mason, William Mason
1810 Miles Cooksey, John Mason, William Mason
1811 Miles Cooksey, John Mason
1812 Miles Cooksey, John Mason

I believe William D. Mason had already moved to Warren, KY before Miles Cooksey. I just know this is where I found William Mason's name on the 1850 Warren, KY Census and Susan had died. He was 66 born in VA. That would be about 1784. His son John M. Mason was born 3-26-1812. I believe this really means something to the John Mason in Amherst and could be William D's father. I wonder if the M. stands for Miles. Then John M. named his first son William H. Mason which I believe the H. stands for Hezekiah. Brother of Miles. Then John M. Mason named his first daughter Susan E. I'm sure this is for his mother. John M. Mason ended up in Washington Co., AR.

Then regarding the Cooksey and Rideout surname they are also in my lines:

Benjamin Rideout married Elizabeth Cooksey 26 Nov 1816 Brunswick Co. VA. Their daughter Martha Ann Rideout married William H. Barnes 20 Jan 1834 Greensville Co. VA. William H. Barnes a son of John Barnes and Elizabeth Bass of Greensville. William H. Barnes also a nephew of my second great grandmother Elizabeth "Lizza" Barnes that married Henry Mason, son of Christopher Mason and Sarah Chappell.)

Also, Walter Cooksey married Lucy Bass 03 Feb 1797 Greensville Co. and Lucy was a sister to Elizabeth Bass that married John Barnes 24 Aug 1803 with Jacob Payne Surety. Jacob Payne married Susanna Browder, widow of Ingram Collier. Ingram a son of Moses Collier and Ann Nancy Blanks. Nancy a sister to Susanna Blanks that married John Barnes. John and Susanna Barnes were the parents of John Barnes that married Elizabeth Bass. Then Henry Payne married Martha Barnes 22 Dec 1837 Greensville and George C. Barnes, son of John and Elizabeth Barnes, was Surety.

William Barnes and Martha Ann Rideout were parents of Hezekiah W. Barnes that married Susan Olive Rideout 21 Dec 1865 Greensville Co. Susan a daughter of David Rideout and Olive D.Saunders. Should also note that William Barnes' sister Lucy Barnes married William B. Saunders 11 Dec 1837 Greensville Co.

I don't know if anything in the above is new to this list. I would love to know further regarding the William D. Mason who married Susan Cooksey and if this William D. Mason was descended of Capt. John Mason the Elder of Sussex Co. VA.
Sincerely,
Carolyn Mason Anderson

Hi Kelli.
We definitely have a connection. I am descended from Caroline's brother William Cooksey. I will give you access to my tree and you should find quite a bit of information there that can help with your research. Thanks to collaborating with other people researching the cooksey name, I have managed to take this part of my family back many generations. I did not have much information on William's sisters, so I am grateful for the marriage details that you have mentioned.
Please feel free to contact me with any further queries. I live in the same area of south wales that the family settled in back in the 1850's.
Regards,
Rebecca

Hello all,

I am very excited to find this post. I believe that we maybe related. I am hoping that somebody will help me make the connection to the correct Cooksey family.

My son's paternal g-g-g-grandfather is John Jones (b.1861 in Monmouthsire, Wales) who married Caroline Cooksey (b. 1869 in Monmouthshire, Wales). Her father was William Cooksey b. 1833 in Frampton Cotterell, Gloucestershire, England. He came to Wales from England as a young man. He married Mary Jenkins in 1859 in Monmouthshire, Wales. From what I have found Caroline had at least 6 brothers (George, Thomas, Richard, William, John, and Charles) and 3 sisters (Ann, Mary, and Emily). All born between 1859 and 1881. One of her sisters (Mary) also married her husband's brother Edward Jones (b.1873 in Monmouthshire Wales) . It was a second marriage for Mary, (first husband was David Roberts).

I am looking for ANY information that people have regarding the family of Caroline's father (William Cooksey), her mother (Mary Jenkins), her sister (Mary Cooksey) or any of her other siblings.

Kelli

I have often wondered if Chester Cooksey belongs to Otto Ross either? I think it's possible that he belonged to Flora and she gave him the Cooksey name. He is the only one in the family who ended up staying in Arkansas. I have tried for years to find someone in his family, but have not been successful. If Kentworth did not belong to Ross, wonder why his last name was Cooksey and not Marriner? Lots of questions. I do know that Ross was quite the traveler(supposedly a bootlegger), so maybe he made a trip back to see his ex-wife(and also 1st cousin-lol)? My grandfather also lists 3 sisters in his Bible that no one seems to know anything about-Edna Gaye, Alma and Pansy. I have been unable to find anything on them, other than Maud Marriner also had a daughter named Pansy. I think it's possible that Flora and Ross had children who did not live and maybe that is who they are. What side of the Cooksey family are you from?

Hi Chris!
I still find it strange that Kentworth was born April 26 1907.If so I don't think Otto Ross is his father. He may have been married to Mary Maud Simpkins but according to the 1910 Census: Busseron Township, Knox County, Indiana
----Otto Ross is listed with wife Flora, Stepson Urban Dickson (Dixon) and sons, Chester, Paul and Otto. By 1910 Otto Ross Cooksey had been married 3 times.Flora had been married twice. Otto and Flora had been married for 5 years.
Kentworth Cooksey of Maryland or Cooksey Island

Kentworth Cooksey was my great grandfather Fred(of Indiana) half brother. He lived in Maryland and his mother was Maud Simpkins Marriner. I can find no information on him other than he appears on the 1920 census as 12 years old and he is on the SS Death Index as passing away in 1989 in Wicomico, Maryland. Upon seraching Wicomico, I found a place called Cooksey Island nearby and am wondering if it is connected to my family? Anyone with information concerning Kentworth or Cooksey Island is very much appreciated. Kentworth's siblings were: Alta, Fred, William, Frankie, Chester, Paul and Otto "Tot" Cooksey and Delores, Harry, Pansy and Precious Marriner. The Marriner father's name was Henry and they lived in Somerset, Maryland. The Cooksey's all lived in Indiana, except Chester who lived in Arkansas. Thank you!

Thanks for the response and info-will follow up on Josiah and Charity.

I had also looked at Enoch as possibility for father of John Cooksey. Had ordered Enoch's will in which a son John Cooksey was named but had contact few years ago with a descendant of Enoch thru John who said John, son of Enoch was born in 1815 and migrated to Gonzales Co, Texas and stayed in Texas which let him out as my John. (His birthdate would also rule him out as owning land in Warren Co, TN in 1826 & 1827.)

I have not been able to find John on the 1830 census either. I thought he might have been living in his father's household but couldn't find any that fit the family profile I had developed. They may also have been living in Susannah's parents household and so far don't have a maiden name for her. (Mother's name info on death cert blank for Jane Cooksey Harrison. Mary Ann Cooksey Ramming died in 1881 so no death cert available for her and don't know when or where other children died except for prev mentioned Milton who died in 1876.)

It is doubtful the Pamela Sue Penegar is daughter of John & Susannah. According to 1850 census, Pamela was born ca 1827 which is the year Mary Ann was born. Our family history does not indicate she was a twin. Looking at the 1840 census for John I was counting the 10-15 year old daughter as Mary Ann. The other children in the household listed on 1850 census could be accounted for in this 1840 profile except those born after 1840 and an older (15-20 yr) and a female in the 5-10 yr group. However, I will follow up on that to see if I can find out Pamela Sue's maiden name. It appears Pamela died or at least is no longer in the family by 1860 when P. M. Peneger is found in Cole Co, MO with who appears to be a 2nd wife and daughter Barbra, 13; son Willbury, 10; and 2 younger children Robert, 3 & Samuel, 1.

I would say the 16-20 yr old in the 1840 census was prob the William P. Cooksey who married a Mary George in Morgan Co, MO on May 11, 1856. (He is listed as county treasurer for Morgan Co, MO in 1860.) There are also 2 deed records on file for a Wm. P. Cooksey- one with wife Mary Jane.

Do you have any pictures of any of the Cookseys? The only one we have is of Mary Ann Cooksey Ramming as an older woman. Also if you would like to have copies of the death certs/obits I have let me know and I will be glad to send to you.

Since this is a Cookey board thought I would also pass the following along in hopes it might help someone remove a roadblock:

There is a James Cooksey, 14, born MO; and a Walter Cooksey, age 8, born MO living in the household of a Dr. John Thurston and wife, Nancy along with 3 of their children ages 10-19 on the 1870 census in Morgan Co, MO. Possibly children of William P. or Thomms Cooksey?

Anna E. Cooksey married a William J. Oylear on Mar 9, 1865 in Morgan Co, MO. Possibly daughter of William P.

Missouri Births & Stillbirths Record Search shows Cooksey's in Dent, Dallas, Cedar, Schuyler, Holt, Grundy, and other counties in Missouri.

This John Cooksey is almost undoubtedly the son of Josiah Cooksey, ca 1764-1853. Josiah and family are in Warren County, TN in the early 1800's, having immigrated from South Carolina. A Warren County Plat Record from 1827 mentions John Cooksey as a land owner adjacent to Matthew Pennigar on the waters of Fall Creek. Josiah and his son Daniel (John's half-brother) are found also on Fall Creek in these Plat records. John's mother would have been Charity, last name unknown, Josiah's second wife.

This portion of Warren County became Dekalb County in 1838.
There are three older Cookseys in Warren County, who could be candidates to be John's father; Enoch, Cornelius and Josiah. All immigrated from South Carolina, and all are probably brothers. Enoch and Cornelius have sons named John who are documented separately. Neither of them are on Fall Creek in the 1820's and 1830's. I have not been able to locate John on an 1830 census.

On the 1850 Morgan County Census, there is a P.W. Penegar, age 25, with wife Pamela Sue age 23 next door to John and Susannah. This Pamela is likely the oldest daughter of John and Susannah, as Penegar (actually Pinegar) is a closely associated family in Tennessee. Also John shows a 10-15 yr. old daughter on the 1840 Dekalb County census.

The information provided here as to birth and death dates is something I did not have, and it is helpful. Thanks very much.
Mel Cooksey

There are three books written by genealogy author Ralph Smith that provide insight on the Cooksey family; “The Tennison family of Southern Maryland” and “Abraham Lemaster (1638-1722) of Charles County, MD and his Descendents” cover associations of Samuel Cooksey, along with his sons and daughters. Samuel’s family is quite well documented. Also “Philip Cooksey (died Feb. 1696/97) of Calvert County, MD. , and Descendents" provides a good history or Philip Cooksey, the immigrant, and two generations down. Philip’s family history has a few holes, but we can construct it fairly well. The areas of study are Calvert, St. Mary’s, and (mainly) Charles County, Maryland.

Samuel’s father is unproven, same with Philip. These two are not connected or allied as far as we know. Disregard any info of Samuel as son of Philip, or vice versa. Philip immigrated from England in 1659. We have no idea of Samuel’s provenance. He first appears in 1673 on a St. Mary’s County, Maryland will.

Mel Cooksey
I am looking for the parents of Samuel Cooksey, b abt 1650 in Charles County MD. I have Thomas Cooksey and Elizabeth Lashley but the birth dates of Elizabeth seems to be a different generation. I did find a Thomas Cooksey born in England abt 1629. Some sources have him married and died in Maryland and others have his marriage and death in England. I can only assume that he was a merchant mariner and went back to England and died.
Any thoughts on spouse, children and if he died in Maryland or England.

Hello Patsi
The last info I've seen on Samuel Cooksey 1650 was that his father supposely was Thomas Cooksey 1629-1705 (son of Roger Coooksey b.1599 and Mary White b.1604) and mother Elizabeth Lashley 1629-1674. Children were Anne,Thomas,Samuel John and Elizabeth.Elizabeth Lashley's 2nd marriage was to Philip Coooksy with Children Mary,Elizabeth,Ann,Catherine and Henry.Philip's 2nd marriage was with Sarah Lashley? and they had a a son Thomas. As far as I know there has not been a family connection between Philip and Samuel yet.

Hi,

I am a 36 year old female, and even though I know quite a bit about my mothers family. I don't know alot about my fathers. I am starting to trace my genealogy on the Cooksey name and have no idea where to start. But this is what I can tell you. My fathers name was Benjamin B. Cooksey. Even though we are from North Carolina, his father Lloyd Cooksey was originally from St. Louis, Missouri. My grandfather married his wife (her last name is Sauls) after he was stationed down here while in service. And so far that is all I have. If you have any tips, I would appreciate it.

Hi Robyn,
My name is Ian COOKSEY and I live in Newcastle NSW Australia. I think I have quite a lot of information on your COOKSEY connection. Did Joseph COOKSEY have the middle name Christopher by any chance, if so I may be able to tell you a bit more about your ancestors.
I have just sent a message to a friend in UK to confirm something.
I am not related to this branch of the family, but I am a collector of anything COOKSEY, and have a lot of information of many families, UK and Australia.
You could write direct to me at ian@cooksey.com.au
Yours, Ian COOKSEY.

Re: Rufus Cooksey

I am still looking for relatives of Rufus (or Ross) Cooksey.
So I just found this post(9 years later). When looking at my father, Ross's certficate of blessing, it looks like it says his father was Ross Cooksey, not Rufus Cooksey. I do not know if Rufus Cooksey and Ross Cooksey are the same person, I do not know. I do know he (Rufus)had a brother, Guy Cooksey. They both were in Utah after 1913, when my father was born. This cannot be this difficult. He had to have been born between 1885 and 1890.(we think he was from Oklahoma) Traveled through Utah driving cattle to Montana in 1912-1913. (my father was born in 1913 and my grandmother became pregnant in Feb, 1913.) My father was not given the Cooksey name because Rufus and my grandmother were not married. She was widowed and gave my father her previous husband's, name.
