I have no connection at all to this family. I found this in a June 12, 1888 issue of the Rockland (Maine) Courier Gazette:

“The death is announced of Mrs. Elcy Coombs of Ash Point, at an advanced age. Mrs. Coombs was the mother of W.H. and F.T. Coombs and Mrs. John McAlister of this city, and a most estimable lady. She was one of three sisters all of whom had boy twins.”

Pamela, Sorry for delay getting back to you. William's first wife and child being left behind in the UK is an intriguing story. I can see from the census records that this appears to be a fact. William's first wife was Mary Anne (ref. Son Gilbert's Baptism 1856 on freereg org uk) but I have been unable to find the surname yet. I'll keep looking. By the way Mrs Holman is my Great Aunt. Her husband my uncle that did the on-line genealogy correspondence past away a few years ago. Regards Chris
Chris, delighted that you have made contact. Our information on William's first marriage had not been substantiated. The name I had was Ann Bartlett. You may be able to confirm details for me. I did have Gilbert 1856-1869. Do you know what happened to William's first wife and child. A note in the first column of a copy of the 1851 Census has been added saying: “William went to Australia. Married 1859. Left a son Gilbert and wife, teacher.”Family oral history says his brother, Mark, came to Adelaide, Australia around the same time as William to try and persuade him to return home. Mark returned to England.I am descended from William and Margaret Cherry. Oral history says she worked as a maid at the Ring of Bells Hotel, Moorlinch. I may have William's birth year incorrect. The 1851 census says he was 16 and Mark 14.I have had contact with the Holmans of Moorlinch. Would like more information on the families in England and the ancestors.I live in Australia

Pamela, did you get any where with your query? I have the same names in my tree as you but I have slight differences. Wm Coombes b.1808 m. Mary Warry b.1805 their Children Wm b.1838 and Mark b.1834 (my direct line). William 1834 I think he married Mary Ann Saunder? and had child Gilbert b.1856. Does this help or can you correct me? I still have an auntie (Coombes) in Moorlynch and spent happy childhood school holidays there.
Chris
After analysis of the DNA tests done by male Comeau and Coombs we can now assume that Antoine Comeau, son of Pierre Comeau born about 1661 in Port-Royal is Anthony Coombs, who established himself in Wells, Maine circa 1687 with Louis Allain and married Dorcas Woodin on september 5th, 1688.

http://en.comeaunet.org/dna/big-annoucement-regarding-antoin...

Sebastien Comeau
http://www.comeaunet.org

It looks as though I answered this site in March. However, I didn't add the pertinent information. My DNA matched with others back to Anthony of Wells and Rochester. My next most recent ancestor was a link to Pierre Jean Comeau of Port Royal, Nova Scotia. A great deal of circumstatial evidence makes Anthony and Pierre's son Anthoine the same person. As you probably know, Comeau is a variant of Coombs, there are numerous family traditions that Anthony was French, they are born about the same time, Anthony works for Lewis Allen in Wells - the same Louis Allain from Port Royal, and more. But there is NO PRIMARY RECORD.

If more people would submit their DNA we might be able to solve this problem

I don't know if there will be a reply to this, it's been a while since this was posted. I visited a grave site outside of Elgin today, and there were several Coombs family grave stones. A road nearby is also called Coombs. Was interested in the history behind the family. Did you already know about this graveyard? In a VERY rural suburb. Kinda out in the middle of nowhere

Coombs, Henry Elbridge: (1864 to at least 1900) b. Augusta, ME

Searching for
1) Death information of Henry.
2) Birth information on wife Mrs. Ellen "Nellie" Murphy (b. Ireland,
3) Whatever is known of daughter Mary Abigail, b. 3 May 1880, probably in Queens, NY.

I found this family on the 1880 & 1900 Census records in Queens, NY. Also, he attended his mother's funeral in South Portland (Maine) in 1895.

I know Henry's ancestry (and would be happy to share). Have a picture of him (we think it's him, anyway). Have information on all of his siblings - but he seems to have disappeared after the 1900 census.

Henry Elbridge is the son of Ebridge C. Coombs and Abigail Dorothy Currier. He was the oldest child in the family and was the brother of my grandfather, James Parker Coombs.

Any additional information about Henry Elbridge would be very welcome.

I think that the person you are looking for is George L. Coombs; George M. Coombs was his son and brother to Simeon B. Coombs.

The 1850 Federal Census for Bowdoin, ME shows that George L. Coombs was head of household, age 26, farmer, $1,000 value of his real estate, born in ME about 1824. The rest of his household consisted of: Mary J. Coombs, age 23, born in ME about 1827; Edwin Coombs age 4; Elizabeth Coombs, age 2; and Corissan, age 1 year.

The Topsham Vital Records, page 43, provides the following:
George Lewis Coombs, b. 20 Oct 1824 at Bowdoin, ME
Mary Jane (Thompson) Coombs, b. 11 Aug 1827 at Topsham, ME
They were married 7 Sep 1845 (Topsham VR, page 70), both of Topsham, and had at least 12 children:
George F. Coombs, b. 28 Oct 1845 at Topsham, prob. died young
Edwin C. Coombs, b 15 Sep 1846 at Topsham
Elizabeth T. Coombs, b. 16 Feb 1848
Corris Ann G. Coombs, b. 19 May 1849 at Bowdoin
Simeon B. Coombs, b. 14 July 1850 at Bowdoin
George M. Coombs, b. 23 Nov 1851 at Bowdoin
James H. Coombs, b. 1 Mar 1853 at Bowdoin
Martha A. Coombs, b. 18 Mar 1855 at Topsham
John A. Coombs, b. 24 Mar 1857 at Topsham
Carrie M. Coombs, b. 11 Apr 1859 at Topsham
William B. Coombs, b. 13 Apr 1861 at Topsham
Frank L. Coombs, b. 4 Aug 1862 at Topshan

On 29 Oct 1867 George Lewis Coombs and David E. Coombs were "lost at sea" (Bowdoin VR, p. 48). George is buried at Woodlawn Cem. in West Bowdoin (gravestone record). His widow, Mrs. Mary J. Coombs, married Clement W. Coombs (son of Isaac & Hannah Coombs - Topsham VR p.43)on 28 Jan 1867 (Topsham VR, p. 70).
Re: Mary E. Coombs in Minnesota

Deanna: Additional information for you. Mary Evva Gilbert was the widow of Lewis Herbert Coombs, a local merchant. They had a son together named Guy Grover Coombs, born in 1882 and died in 1912. Mary Evva left Robert Harrison and they were divorced before 1897. She moved to her house in town with the children. I am assuming it was her house with Lewis Coombs. Although the grounds for divorce were because of drunkeness and cruelty, Robert was awarded the children. At that time, it is my understanding from older relatives that are now passed on, that the mother could keep the children up to their sixth birthday and then they automatically went to the father. Robert came to pick up the children and Mary Evva hid Robert Thurston, my father, in the oven and refused to give him up. She was also awarded custody of her son Guy Coombs. Mary's mother was close by, but she died before Mary. Mary went for an operation and died of complications, we think blood poisening. That left Guy as an orphan, evidently Robert did not want him, so he was sent to a facility where orphans and problem children are sent to live until they were of age. Guy learned a trade at the facility as a carpenter. The next time I found him he was in his twenties living in a rooming house. He died in 1912. Very sad! The census records show that Mary Evva was born in Illinois, however, I think her family moved to Minnesota, which makes George her possible father. Keep in touch,
Marie

Re: Mary E. Coombs in Minnesota

Deanna: Mary Evva Gilbert, Coombs, Walker was my grandmother. Gilbert is her family name. I am the youngest living child of Robert Thurston. Mary Evva died when my father was about six years old, August 7, 1897. She is buried in Delano, Minnesota. Robert Harrison married again to Ida Mae Smith and they raised the family along with three additional children, Mary Rebecca, Stephen Emerson and James Smith Walker. I do not have any other information other than she had three brothers that she talked about to Robert Harrison, George, Frank and John. Hand written documentation from Robert Harrison and their daughter Lucretia Mae Walker Crawford have provided this information. Lucretia did not know her Gilbert grandparents names. Hope this helps some. I would be interested to know where your line forms from Mary Evva. I may have you in my tree already.
Good Blessings,
Marie

I am looking for the parents of my paternal grandfather, Elmer Linwood Coombs. He was born April 1891 in East St. Louis, Illinois, and died April 1938 in Caseyville, Illinois. Elmer married Blanche Kirkman in January 1918 in Utah. They had 3 sons, Ernest, Gordon, and Robert. I lost my Coombs family due to divorce when I was only 4 years old. Any information about Elmer's parents, siblings, or sons would be appreciated! Thank you! Cathie Coombs
