Combs(Coombs) in St. Mary's County, Md.

Looking for any of my father's relatives who were in the 1900 US Fed. Census in Southern Md. They were listed as Coombs. We use Combs. My great grandfather was George Washington Combs who married Elizabeth Martha Fowler in 1880. His first wife Mary Mattingly had died. Family was Catholic and farmed tobacco in St. Mary's County. The farm was from the Fowler side. My father said that the Fowler grandfather freed his slaves before the civil war. There were 10 living children with Martha. My grandfather was a middle son Joseph L. Combs, Sr. who owned a uniform factory in Balto. where some of his sisters worked. He did not want to be a farmer. My father was the first one in the family to graduate college. He was a Doctor of Pharmacy named Joseph L. Combs, Jr. in Md. & Fla. For many yrs., he had a pharmacy in Balto. called Combs & Neutze, then one in St. Michaels, Md. called Colonial Pharmacy. When he died in 1989 he was living in Fla. His 2nd wife Helen Combs is the widow of his 1st cousin Thomas who was the oldest son of Thomas C. Combs. My brother Joseph L. Combs III in a Lutheran minister & I am a clinical social worker who lives in the Eastern Panhandle of WV. I am sure that there are lots of cousins out there. Please contact me.

Looking for relatives of Gordon Aubrey Coombs, who was born in 1925.

I am looking for relatives of my uncle, Gordon Aubrey Coombs. Gordon was born in 1925 to Elmer Linwood Coombs and Blanche Kirkman Coombs. He grew up in East St. Louis, Illinois, with his brothers, Ernest and Robert. He married in 1947, but I do not know his wife's name. Sadly, Gordon died in 1955 at the age of 29. I was told that he had a daughter, possibly named Karen. Gordon's widow probably remarried.
I am Ernest's daughter, Cathie. I was seperated from my Coombs family in the mid 1950s due to my parents' divorce. There was no further contact with the Coombs family. Now, Ernest is deceased, and I have been unable to find Robert.
If anyone has information on this family, please reply.
Thank you!
Cathie Coombs

I am looking for my uncle, Robert Coombs, born about 1927 to Elmer and Blanche Coombs. He grew up in East St. Louis, Illinois, with his brothers, Ernest and Gordon. I am Ernest's daughter, Cathie. I was separated from my father and the Coombs family about 1956, when my parents divorced. Ernest and Gordon are both deceased. I think Robert may still be living, as I have not found a perfect match on the SSDI. Or, his widow could be receiving his SS benefits. He probably has adult children and grandchildren. I think he lived in Collinsville,Illinois, in the 1970s or 1980s. I hope to reunite with my Coombs family. If you are related to me, or have any info on Robert, or this branch of the Coombs family, please reply. Thank you! Cathie Coombs

I think she did remain single as did Harry.

I will try Tim Coombs e-mail.My e-mail is frannroberts9cv@btinternet.com

Thanks again for the info.

Best Wishes
Ann Roberts

Hi Fran,

How fascinating about Dora and Harry Dacre. The Coombs line is but a branch of my Carver family and as result don't have much on them. I have found Dora in the censuses, as I imagine you have done, the latest being 1911 when she lived in West Ham. I can't seem to find a marriage for her so she must have remained single all her life. I'm giving you the e-mail of Tim Coombs who has more on the Coombs line than I do. I don't know if this e-mail is still good as it's been several years since I've been in touch with him.

boomer@coombs.evesham.net

I live in North Carolina in the U.S. My great grandfather, John Carver, came to the U.S. in 1864. He would have been Dora's second cousin. He was born in Somerset Co., moved to South Wales, then to Pennsylvania, and finally West Virginia. As you can probably tell, he was a coal miner.

If I come across anyone else having information about the Coombs line, I'll let you know. Sorry I can't help any more than this.

Best regards,
Jim

I am looking for anyone who has information on Frederick Price. On the 1901 census he is married to Rosina Parfitt, And it says he was born in Coulston Wilts, but I cannot find any other information about him or his family. I have a letter passed to me from a distant cousin who mentions a Charles and a William who I think maybe his brothers but I can't find them together on any census records in Coulston or Clutton where he was married. My mum thinks he was one of thirteen children.
Does anyone have any information on this family.
Hi I do not know a lot about Dora other than what you have already. She was my Great Gandfather's Brother's Daugther. I have been to Bristol Central Library and found her name listed in an encyclopedia for musicans, she composed out 15 pieces of music, but they didn't have anything more about her. I also have asked around the family but no one seems to even know of her exisstance.
I do have a very elderly relative alive who I believe is my dad's cousin she may know of her,I contacted her a few weeks ago about some other details of the family, she said another member of the family had done some research into the family and done the famiy tree for her. I will have to ring her again and ask if she knew Dora. I'll keep you posted if I find out anything.
Best wishes Liz

Have you a photo of her?

I look forward to hearing from you.I live in Weymouth Dorset
Are you local to Dora's area?

Best Wishes Ann

From what I can determine, GEORGE left Hungerford after JANE'S death in 1895. Do you have any idea where he went? It seems he never made any contact with his children after leaving.

Hi there! I've been following your Coombs messages and was wondering if, one generation back from your William Coombs, you had William Coombs and Mary Young who married in 1835 at St John the Baptiste, Frome?

My descendant is their daughter, Amelea, born 1856.

Cheers
Robyn Lyons

Hi Ann
Thats very interesting,I'm afraid though, I migtht not be able to help you much more with Dora other than what I have already said I was looking my self to find out a bit more about her. I went to Bristol central library today to see I they could help, they sugested that I contact the Royal College of Music to find out about where she trained. they also have archives of hundreds of musicans and their works. you may find what you need to know there.
I would be interested in knowing what more you have about Dora as at the moment I am unable to afford the subscriptions for ancestry, likewise if I find out when or where she was burried I'll let you know. Thanks again for your information.
Best wishes Liz.
by the way the RCM Address is Prince Consort Road. London.SW7 2BS.
Hi thank you so much for getting back so quickly. I also had eight children for Francis and Sarah but I was not at all sure of three of them as they died very young, therefore they were not recorded on any of the census records. they were Frank James born 1855, died 8.5.1856, Sarah born 1862, died 12.3.1865, and Mary Ann born 1864, died 15.5.1866. Francis was my Great Great grandfather,Alfred was my Great Grandfather, he married Sarah Ellen Jane Button she was born 1858. They had at least 10 children but 1, lucy born in 1901 died at only a few weeks old and my dad thinks they may have lost a couple more babies but he does not known anything more about them. their childrens names and birth years were. Francis b.1888, Alfred Tom b.1889, died 1.4.1916 from wounds recieved in the war. Alice May b.1894 she had an illegitimate son, Gerald who from what I have been told was brought up as a sibling,b.1913,alice died 1916, Ellen b.1896, Sidney (my Grandfather) b.1900, married Dorothy Hancock b.1900, Albert Tom b.1902, Mary, Frank,Minnie, I'm not sure of the last three 's birth dates they were after 1901. Sidney and Dorothy had a son my father Brian and a daughter Sheila. I have two brothers Maurice and Ivor. My name is Elizabeth which my parents insist in calling me but most poeple know me as Liz. I have 2 children Mark and Nicola, and a Grand daughter who is just over 2 years old.
I hope this has been of help to you please get in touch if you want to know anything more about the coombs lines

I am related to the Coombs family through my Carver line. Sarah Carver, of Buckland Dinham, Somerset, married William Coombs in 1786 at Hemington. They had a son named Elijah who married Elizabeth Hobbs. Elijah and Elizabeth had a son named Francis, who married Harriet Plaister. Francis and Harriet had a son named William. William married Hannah Coombs and one of their children was named Dora Hannah. I'd like to know which line you are descended. I have more about the Coombs family I can share with you. I believe I may even have some photographs.

Sarah Carver was the sister of my 3x great grandfather.

-Jim

Hi
I was so pleased to see your reply to my message.
I am not related to Dora but would love to know more about her as I am writing the story of HARRY DACRE who was a well known composer, born in 1857, who was a good friend of Dora. Harry(real name Frank Dean) wrote DAISY BELL and I'LL BE YOUR SWEETHEART.These are the best known but he wrote hundreds of other songs.
I know they were friends as Dora was the executor of Harry's Will and he left her a considerable sum of money.
I believe she was unmarried as indeed Harry was.
Harry died in 1922.Do you know when Dora died and also where,or where she was buried?
I am also trying to find out more about Frank Adlam, also a musician, who lived with Harry and who was the other Executor of his Will.
I have a little more info about Dora which I found on Ancestry if you need more.
It is interesting that there is a connection with music as that would have been possibly how they met.
I have lots of info on Harry as I have been investigating for 2 years but the one remaining mystery is where he is buried.
I believe Harry might have dedicated some of his songs to her.
Best Wishes Ann

Hi Liz,

It's nice to hear from you! Yes, the details you provided are what I have for William Coombs and Sarah Carver. You are correct that there are a number of Coombs family members. I have been working on the Carver for some time now. Sarah Carver is the sister of my 3x great grandfather, Sampson Carver of Buckland Dinham, Somerset Co. Sarah was the oldest of seven children born to John Carver and Sarah Ayers: Sarah, Ann, Matthew, Sampson, William, Aaron, and Moses.

My 2x great grandfather was Aaron Carver, also of Buckland Dinham, who married Ann Maggs. They had seven children: Worthy, Elizabeth, James, John, Eli, Mary Ann, and Enoch. The family moved to Blaina, Monmouthshire, Wales in the 1840s where Mary Ann and Enoch were born. My great grandfather was John Carver, b. 1842, Buckland Dinham. Aaron died in 1857 and the family moved to the U.S.A. in 1864. My great grandfather was a coal miner and worked in the anthracite mines in northeastern Pennsylvania. Around 1877 he and his brothers James and Enoch moved to West Virginia, leased land, and opened their own mining operations. John first married Margaret Jones of Cadoxton Neath, Glamorgan Co., Wales. She died at age 27 and he next married Frances Evans, of Plymouth, PA, and they had eight children. Their son, George, is my grandfather. He and my grandmother had four children, one of whom, Carolyn, is my mother. She married James Chapman and they had three children, including me, also James but I go by Jim.

I have that Francis and Harriet Coombs had eight children: William, Elizabeth Ann, Frank James, Alfred John, Sarah, Mary Ann, Albert Tom, and Minnie Augusta, all born at Kilmersdon. I hope this is correct but I may have missed somebody. I also have that Francis Coombs was born at Hemington, Somerset and Harriet Plaister at Stoke Lane. Both Francis and Harriet died at Kilmersdon, so you should be able to find their graves.

Tell me who your 2x great grandparent was and where you fit in.

I live in North Carolina, so you have a number of relatives in America. I've been to Somerset twice, the latest in 2000.

Best wishes,
Jim

Hi Dora Hannah Coombs was my Great Great Uncle William's daughter, she was born 1876. She was a music misstress in a small school in Clifton Bristol in 1901 age 25. I have been trying to find out a bit more about her as I do not live very far away from Clifton, we googled her name and found a Dora H Coombs in assocciation to some sheet music 'Thebais internezzo for piano solo',dated arround 1914, I don' t know if this our Dora. The name is not very common so maybe it is her. What do you know of her or her family, and what is your connection. If you get in touch I may be able to giveyou further information.
best wishes Liz

I think William Coombs and Sarah Carver were my 4x Great Granparrents Elijah Coombs their son married Betty Hobbs if my conections are correct Elijah and Betty had Ann born 1823 and Francis my 3xgreat Grandfather bp 29.7.1827 he married Harriet Plaister born 1827. I am hoping in the very near future that my father will take me to Kilmersdon to see the graves Apparently the Coombs's have quite a large family stone erected there, I may just take the bus to Radstock and walk over to Kilmersdon apparently it only takes a couple of hours to walk there and back It would be nice to see the old sites.
what is your connection with William Coombs and Sarah Carver I would love to hear from you.
Regards Liz
