Jacob Coon Jr. b. in Deleware, New York 1821

I'm at a little bit of a stand-still with my family. I'm stuck with Jacob Coon Sr. right now. I have found information on Jacob Coon Jr (my 4x's G-Gpa) and on Jacob Sr.'s wife Louisa but i can't find any other info on who Jacob Sr.'s parents were.

This is what I have right now all the way down to me. I haven't found who Jacob, Sr's parents are.

Jacob Coon, Sr. (married Louisa Northway)
b. ? d. 1886
|
Jacob Coon, Jr. (married Juliet Gardner)
b. 1821 d. 1912
|
Allen Mortimer Coon (married Mary Lovinia Aikens/Akins)
b. 1848 d.1920
|
Clifford L. Coon (married Laura Belle Regnier)
b. 1874 d. 1964
|
Lawrence Coon (married Helen Dugan)
b. 1914 d. 2001
|
Michael L. Coon
b. 1948
|
Micheal D. Coon
b. 1969
|
Me (married K.McD.)
b. 1987

I recently got an email from my Grandpa Mike with some information he had on our family. Along with it was a picture of Jacob Jr. and Juliet and a story with it. Jacob Jr. moved with his (unnamed) Paternal Grandfather to Orwell Township, Ashtabula County, Ohio at the age of 16 in abt 1837. It states that Jacob Jr.s grandfather settled a farm. But the story doesn't list his grandfather's name so we are still stuck. I've made great progress with the Northways (listed in our story as Northaway) but can't get past Jacob Coon Sr.
Any information on who Jacob Coon Jr's grandfather was, or ways to find settlement information from the 1830's would be wonderful!

Thank you
Justine (Coon) McD.

Hi Libby,
It's been a while since we communicated. I was just reviewing our old posts because I am told that Ron Coon has established his DNA relationship with Abram Coon of Leeds, who I believe is also your relation.

All three of us are related to Abram and to Joseph of Dryden, NY. I guess the two of them *have* to have been brothers. Did you ever establish whether your descendancy comes through Mathew and Lydia Wilbur Coon, or from Nathan McCoon and Anna Hall? Were Mathew and Nathan closely related, to your knowledge?

Thanks!
Kristin (Coon) Yates

In 1991 Margaret Coon Beatty was living at 1740 Key West Lane, Vienna, VA, 22182. If she is still living she would be about 80 years old now.

The paper I have is about 50 pages long. If you send me your mailing address i will send you a copy.

In the paper she says that the Cortland Secord name came from Mary Wartman's uncles.

Dick

Thanks Dick

I am sure this is where I got the shortened version of the info. I would love to get a copy of what you have as it is more complete than my summary. Do you know how to contact her? It would be the proof that I need and also maybe she can shead some light on how if any we may be connected to Laura Secord. My father when he was alive, always said that my gramma Myrtle Coon said she was related to Laura Secord, but I have no proof. This is something I have always tried to prove. It may be accurate as the name Secord pops up. I am finding that many of my relatives middle names are in fact the last name of a relative. My father was named after our W(h)attam line. so my quest continues.

Thanks, would love to see what you have.

Cindy

Cindy,
I have a paper authored by your 1st cousin once removed, Margaret Coon Beatty, detailing her research into your family line. She gives information on John Coon and makes a reasonable case that he is descended from Matthew5, (Matthew 4, John 3, John 2, John1) She mentions that in the 1800 census of Easton, Washington Co., NY the name is spelled Cahoon and Matthew has 4 sons which might indicate that John could be one of the sons.

She also lists Cortland Secord Coon in her tree.

Dick Coon

My 3rd great grandfather, John Coon, was born in NY in 1807. I am trying to verify information that I have been given that his father was Abraham Coon.

John married Sally RIVENBURY in 1831 in Prattsville, Greene, NY. They had 9 children:

Vianna

Emilla

William R

Eleanor Jane

Charles Wesley

Rachel

Issac R.

Adelbert

I have since uncovered the name of the 9th sibling, Antoine. His grave is marked in the LeRoy, Bradford County, PA cemetery and it indicates that he is the son of John and Sally Coon. He was born 18-- stone is unreadable and died 19 Feb 1918.
I cannot find him in any census.

The 1880 census indicates that he was born in New York and that his father was born in Germany. John died in Leroy, Bradford, PA. I have a copy of his will.

I would appreciate it if you have anything that might help me identify John's parents.

My line:
John Coon

William R. Coon

Sylvester Coon

William James Coon

Bernice Irene COON Eldrett

Daryl Alice ELDRETT Watkins

darylwatkins52@msn.com

I will throw out another name as well that came up because of a DNA match: MacGoun. The 97% match was to a MacPherson and apparently there is a story of a MacGoun assisting the MacPhersons in a battle.

I am also seeing DNA matches to Wright of Scotland; have no idea why.....
Yes, this has been a brick wall. I have a lot of "circumstantial evidence" so far. It started with a reference in a Rhode Island description that Nathan "went to Berlin" [Berlin,ny]. In August 1773, Nathan and his cousin Hezekiah [John, John, Daniel] signed leases at Rensselaerwyck Manor. Nathan's sister, Thankful (Abel) Lewis is buried at Berlin. In the 1780s, additional Coon family members are in the area. In 1780 Nathan is reported deceased on a tax roll "widow Coon", but in 1790 there are two Nathans on the census in Stephentown, my guess Nathan 1745 and Nathan 1770. As for Abraham, he is on NY militia rosters in 1776 posted at Fort Constitution then in May of 1777 there is a roster which includes James, William [of Daniel], Nathan and Abraham. On the Loyalist side, I have Abraham captured in 1777 close to the Battle of Bennington with other residents of the Berlin/Petersburg/Hoosick area under the command of Pfister. And no further NY rosters for Abraham. I can trace my ancestry to the loyalist Abraham. Additionally, we had a male descendant of my line match [96%] DNA to a male descendant who has a proved line to John Maccoone. But still looking for the final proof.

I envy your trip to Aberdeenshire ! You may wish to google "Dunbar Martyrs". They recently had a ceremony honoring the Scots who were death marched after losing to Oliver Cromwell before being shipped out as indentured servants, such as John MacCoone. The author of Swords, Loaves and Fishes responded to my inquiry about possible Highlander surnames that he might be of the Clan Colquhoun (pronounced Cohoon) or Clan MacQueen [he thought more likely since it would be rendered as MacCuine in Gaelic.] He said the English shipping clerks could not spell the Gaelic names.

Hi Glenn,
Thanks for answering my question. My father was John Wattam Dobbin.

If you would like updated info on this line, I am in the process of working on this. I can also go further back in history to names like W(hattam) Preston( another family from Mass. USA) Fowler, Dobbin, and more.

Where can I obtain complete info on this Coon Macooone line?

I have hear there were connections in the USA but I didn't realize how far back this went. Like I had asked before about Laura Secord, this connection may be on the Rose side of the family. I am still working on this.

I would love to find out more info on the Coon connection and complete the information that was given to me. Any help would be great.

I guess that the Coon family first appeared in Canada just before the war of 1812.

If anyone wants info. please give them my contact info.

Thanks

Cindy

Thanks Glenn, I have been trying to find canadian info on the Coon family.

My mother was given a paper from a relative with the following info on it.

1st gen. John Macoone b.circa 1630 Aberdeenshire Scotland married Sarah Ford Wood
2nd gen. John Macoone b.June 14, 1666 Cambridge, MA. married
Ann unknown of Westerly, RI.
3rd gen. John Macoone (McCoun) (Coon) b.circa 1697? in Hopkinton, RI m. Patience Randall
4th gen. Matthew Coon b. circa 1726? in Hopkinton, RI m. Lydia Wilbur
5th gen. Matthew Coon b. Oct. 2, 1752 Hopkinton, RI died 1835 in Andes Delaware Co, NY M. unknown.
Children are Samuel, Job, Jeremiah ( I have seen these on
different posts) I have a paper saying there was another son John Coon and unknown daughters.
6th gen. John Coon b. May 19, 1786 in Dutchess Co. NY then moved to Kingston Ontario Canada and married Mary Wartman.
I think he may have served in the war of 1812 in the Frontenac Militia and married a canadian girl.
7th gen. Matthew Coon b. March 10 1819 in Kingston Ontario.
m. Sarah Ann Rose.
8th gen.Charles Henry Coon b. Sidney Twsp. Hastings Co. Ontario m. Emily Otis Wattam
9th gen. Myrtle Henrietta Louisa Coon( my grandmother).

Can you tell me if there is any record of the Matthew Coon having 4 sons and not 3. Does Samuel, Job and Jeremiah have a brother John. If so then my line is that of the above Macoones.

If you can't find the info, is there someone else that may have records to help me confirm my notes.

I hope that you can help me with this or at least point me in the right direction.

I have just joined ancestry and am overwhelmed and confused
about all the possible info I am seeing.

Cindy Olynyk
e-mail ckoonthego@sympatico.ca
Hello Glenn,
I have just joined ancestry a few weeks ago. I would like to find out more info on the Coon Family name. I have a paper that was given to my mother about The Coon Connection to the Peterborough Ontario Dobbins.

My grand mother was Myrtle Henrietta Louisa Coon d/o Rev Charles H. Coon. from Sidney Twp. Hastings Co. Ontario. She married Millen George Dobbin of N. Monaghan Twp. Peterborough, Ontario.

My grandmother mentioned to my dad that she had some connection to Laura Secord? Could this be a connection through Courtland Secord Coon? Would this info be in the Coon family bible. I did hear that the bible was around, but didn't know where of if this is the same bible.

I do know we are related somewhere along the line. I would like to share what I have found.

Cindy
I am looking for more information regarding Moses Ayres Coon, born on April 6, 1868 in Milton, VT. His parents were O.E. Coon and Emily Wheelock. Moses married Bessie Thorne in 1890. By the 1900 census he is no longer living with Bessie or their children and I can't find him anywhere else. By 1910, Bessie is listed as being divorced and remarried, but I can't find any information on what may have happened to Moses or when/where he died.

I was born in 1971. Her mother had 6 other children and she was the third oldest. She had placed me up for adoption at Children's Home Society of Charleston. Anyone with any information would be greatly appreciated. She had three other sisters and two brothers. She lived with her aunt most of her upbringing.

I have to tell you that the Combs&Co. website has a page where they are putting DNA together to see if the Coons' and the Combs' were all the same at one time.
When you go to Scotland maybe you will find some new info on this subject.
I loved Scotland, went on a tour, but had no time for Genealogy..darn. My family (both) ented up in Fleming Co., Ky. I know this is a long shot but I am looking for Abrahams wife. On the Ancestry site I find 2 Johanahs. One Ayres and one Talmadge. Also how did the Suttons and leforges end up in Fleming Co. (Mason Co.) then.?

I wonder if this Betsey might be the daughter of Nathan Coon, Jr. Nathan died abt 1791 and in the Van Rensselaer papers in the NY State Archives his 6 heirs are listed including an Elizabeth. The 1790 census of Petersburg shows Nathan with 3 females - his wife Hannah and 2 daughters - Lucy and Elizabeth. Nathan's widow Hannah doesn't show up in the 1800 census - so she may have died or married again I wonder if the two unknown females living with Hezekiah in the 1800 census might be Nathan's daughters Lucy and Elizabeth?

My ancestor, Betsey Coon (born c. 1784, married Luther Hale c. 1800), is shown living next door to Aaron Coon in the 1810 Petersburg, Rensselaer, NY census. I suspect she is sister of Aaron, therefore daughter of Hezekiah. In the 1790 census, there are 2 females in the household of Hezekiah Coon. Since Hezekiah's daughter Delaney (Delana) was probably married an on her own by 1790, the 2 females could be his wife, and daughter Betsey? I am probably grasping at straws, but I simply cannot find any information in any other records regarding Betsey Coon (and her husband Luther Hale). Any info or thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Mansfield Coon/Kuhn 1747 - ?

I'm trying to find out more of this ancestor of ours.

His parents were Adam & Eve Kuhn.
He was born in 1747 NJ (although that may be a town in PA not the state).

He was in the Revolutionary War. When it was over he moved to KY and we lost his trail. It's possible he was given land for his service in the Revolutionary War.

Does anyone have any information of him being in KY?
