Elizabeth Cope b. 1818 or 1819 married Andrew Headman Bucks Co Pa and Phil Pa

My GGG Grandparents were Andrew Headman b. September 02, 1819 in Bucks Co Pa and Elizabeth Cope b. October 18, 1819 (per her tombestone). They are both burried at Leidy's cemetery, Montgomery Co, Pa.

They lived in Hilltown, Bucks P.a for the first couple of years of marriage, then moved to Philadelphia were they lived out their lives.

I'm trying to find out who were Elizabeth's parents. I do know that George "Henry" Cope and Anna Shellenberger had a daughter named Elizabeth b. 28 Oct 1818. I'm guessing they are the same and that the tombestone inscription is wrong.

Anyone know??

Myron Cope, AGE, 79,

Myron Cope,
Myron Cope, the screechy-voiced announcer whose colorful catch phrases and twirling Terrible Towel became symbols of the Pittsburgh Steelers during an unrivaled 35 seasons in the broadcast booth, has died. He was 79.

Cope died Wednesday morning at a nursing home in Mount Lebanon, a Pittsburgh suburb, Joe Gordon, a former Steelers executive and a longtime friend of Cope's, told The Associated Press. Cope had been treated for respiratory problems and heart failure in recent months, Gordon said.

Cope's tenure from 1970-2004 as the color analyst on the Steelers' radio network is the longest in NFL history for a broadcaster with a single team and led to his induction into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 2005.

"His memorable voice and unique broadcasting style became synonymous with Steelers football," Steelers president Art Rooney II said Wednesday. "They say imitation is the greatest form of flattery and no Pittsburgh broadcaster was impersonated more than Myron."

Beyond Pittsburgh's three rivers, Cope is best known for the yellow cloth twirled by fans as a good luck charm at Steelers games since the mid-1970s. The towel is arguably the best-known fan symbol of any major pro sports team, has raised millions of dollars for charity and is displayed at the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

"His creation of The Terrible Towel has developed into a worldwide symbol that is synonymous with Steelers football," Steelers chairman Dan Rooney said Wednesday.

"You were part of the team," Dan Rooney told Cope in 2005. "The Terrible Towel many times got us over the goal line."

Even after retiring, Cope - a sports talk show host for 23 years - continued to appear in numerous radio, TV and print ads, emblematic of a local popularity that sometimes surpassed that of the stars he covered.

An announcer by accident, Cope spent the first half as his professional career as one of the nation's most widely read freelance sports writers, writing for Sports Illustrated and the Saturday Evening Post on subjects that included Muhammad Ali, Howard Cosell and Roberto Clemente. He was hired by the Steelers at age 40, several years after he began doing TV sports commentary on the whim of a station manager, mostly to help increase attention and attendance as the Steelers moved into Three Rivers Stadium.

"I think he always thought of himself as a writer first and sort of an entertainer second and wound up having a lot of fun with the entertainment side of it," Art Rooney said at a news conference Wednesday.

Neither the Steelers nor Cope had any idea how much impact he would make on a five-time Super Bowl champion franchise that, within two years of his hiring, would begin a string of home sellouts that continues to this day.

"Myron brought Steelers football closer to the fans than any other one person," Art Rooney said. "He just made the fans feel a part of it."

Cope became so popular that the Steelers didn't try to replace his unique perspective and top-of-the-lungs vocal histrionics when he retired, instead downsizing from a three-man announcing team to a two-man booth.

"He doesn't play, he doesn't put on a pair of pads, but he's revered probably as much or more in Pittsburgh than Franco (Harris), all the guys," running back Jerome Bettis said. "Everybody probably remembers Myron more than the greatest players, and that's an incredible compliment."

Cope and a rookie quarterback named Terry Bradshaw made their Steelers debuts on Sept. 20, 1970.

Just as Pirates fans once did with longtime broadcaster Bob Prince, Steelers fans began tuning in to hear what wacky stunt or colorful phrase Cope would come up with next. With a voice beyond imitation - a falsetto shrill that could pierce even the din of a touchdown celebration - Cope was a man of many words, some not in any dictionary.

To Cope, an exceptional play rated a "Yoi!" A coach's doublespeak was "garganzola." The despised rival to the north was always the Cleve Brownies, never the Cleveland Browns.

He gave four-time Super Bowl champion coach Chuck Noll the only nickname that ever stuck, the Emperor Chaz. For years, he laughed off the downriver and often downtrodden Cincinnati Bengals as the Bungles, though never with a malice or nastiness that would create longstanding anger.

"I guess sometimes in the football business we all take ourselves too seriously and Myron never let anybody do that, so he had that knack for sort of reminding us of what business we were in," Art Rooney said.

Many visiting players who, perhaps upset by what Cope had uttered during a broadcast, could only laugh when confronted by a 5-foot-4 man they often dwarfed by more than a foot.

During the years, it seemed every Steelers player or employee could tell an offbeat or humorous story about Cope.

He once jammed tight end Dave Smith, fully dressed in uniform and pads, into a cab for a hectic ride to the airport after Smith missed the team bus for an interview. He talked a then-retired Frank Sinatra into attending a 1972 practice in San Diego to make him an honorary general in Franco Harris' Italian Army fan club. He took a wintertime river swim in 1977 to celebrate an unexpected win, and was sick for days.

Cope's biggest regret was not being on the air during perhaps the most famous play in NFL history - Franco Harris' famed Immaculate Reception against Oakland in 1972, during the first postseason win in Steelers history.

Cope was on the field to grab guests for his postgame show when Harris, on what seemingly was the last play of the Steelers' season, grabbed the soaring rebound of a tipped Terry Bradshaw pass after it deflected off either the Raiders' Jack Tatum or the Steelers' Frenchy Fuqua and scored a game-winning 60-yard touchdown. As a result, play-by-play man Jack Fleming's voice is the only one heard on what has been countless replays over the years.

"He ran straight to me in the corner, and I'm yelling, `C'mon Franco, c'mon on!,'" said Cope, who, acting on a fan's advice, tagged the play "The Immaculate Reception" during a TV commentary that night.

Remarkably, Cope worked with only two play-by-play announcers, Fleming and Bill Hillgrove, and two head coaches, Noll and Bill Cowher, during his 35 seasons.

Cope began having health problems shortly before his retirement, and they continued after he left the booth. They included several bouts of pneumonia and bronchitis - he smoked throughout his career - a concussion and a leg problem that took months to properly diagnose. He also said he had a cancerous growth removed from his throat.

"Wherever I go, people sincerely ask me how my health is and almost always, they say `Myron, you've given me so much joy over the years,'" said Cope, who also found the time to write five sports books, none specifically about the Steelers. "People also tell me it's the end of an era, that there will never be an announcer who lasts this long again with a team."

Among those longtime listeners was a Pittsburgh high school star turned NFL player turned Steelers coach - Bill Cowher.

"My dad would listen to his talk show and I would think, `Why would you listen to that?'" Cowher said. "Then I found myself listening to that. I (did) my show with him, and he makes ME feel young."

Funeral arrangements were not immediately available. Art Rooney said the team might plan some sort of tribute in the future but prefers to let Cope's family grieve privately for now.

Cope of Columbiana County, OH

My Great-grandfather was Homer Louise Cope (Gramma said that was really his name) who was born 1878 in (Gramma believed) Lisbon, OH to a Donald Cope and Ruth ?. He married Magdalena Mutchler in Wood Co., OH. They divorced. He died in Washtenaw Co., MI in August 1929. He's buried at the Ft. Meigs Cemetary, Perrysburg, OH. Columbiana County has no birth record, so perhaps he was born elsewhere but his family was from Lisbon. His death record lists no parents. I expect to find him descended from the Quaker Cope clan of that county but have yet to make any connection. Anybody heard of Homer?

John D Cope Obit

December 23, 1919
DR. JOHN D. COPE, NEGLEY, KILLED WHEN HORSE SCARES
Aged Physician Has Skull Fractured in Runaway Accident
When a newly-purchased horse became frightened late Monday afternoon and ran away, throwing him from the buggy to the ground, Dr. John D. Cope, aged 68, well-known physician of Negley, received injuries which resulted in his death early Tuesday morning. The aged doctor sustained a fractured skull and internal injuries and was not conscious after the accident.
Cope had recently purchased a new horse and Monday afternoon hitched it to a buggy for the first time and started out to make a professional call on a patient in Negley. Just outside the barn the horse became frightened and ran away. Several hundred yards from the barn and near the Clyde Brittina home, the frightened horse attempted to turn a corner and the rig was turned half over, throwing the aged occupant to the ground.
Dr. Cope was picked up and taken into the Brittian home. Dr. John S. Atchison was summoned and the Negley doctor was taken to his home, where he died at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday morning.
The victim of the accident had been a lifelong resident of this vicinity. He was born in 1851 on the old Cope homestead in Fairfield township, between New Waterford and Mosk. He was a son of Nathan and Jane Hole Cope and was one of ten children. He was untied in marriage with Miss Louise Guy. He studied medicine under his uncle, the late Dr. Hole, and later was graduated from the Cincinati Medical college. His first practice was in New Waterford and later he served the communities of Achor and Negley. Dr. Cope was a member of the Presbyterian church and was a Mason.
He is survived by two sons--Charles Cope and Ray Cope of Negley--and by the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Mary Phillips, Frank Cope and Allen B. Cope, all of New Waterford; Mrs. Lida Gray of Tipin Springs, Fla., and Mrs. Emma Dawson of Charleroi, Pa.
Arangements for the funeral had

NEGLEY, Dec. 30 - Staff Correspondence to The Ledger). -- Funeral services for the late Dr. J.D. Cope were held in the Methodist Episcopal church Friday morning at 11 o'clock. The last sad rites were conducted by the pastor, Rev. Harvey Hilty. After the sermon by the pastor the Masons of Negley lodge, of which the deceased was a member, took charge and performed the rites and ceremonies of Masonry according to the custom of the ancient lodge. Dr. Cope was widely known throughout this community and will be sadly missed by his many patients and firends. He was a member of the Presbyterian church, but of late years was a regular attendant and supporter of the Methodist Episcopal church at this place. He was a cheerful and liberal giver to the cause of Christianity. He always let his light shine before men and set a Godly example before the world. Good and true to his family in life, he has passed down through the dark valley and shadow of death to the great beyond to meet his God.

December 24, 1919
VICTIM OF RUNAWAY BURIED ON FRIDAY
Local Relatives Will Attend Funeral of Dr. J.D. Cope
Funeral services for the late Dr. John D. Cope, aged Negley physician, who died of induries received when he was thrown from a buggy when his horse ran away, will be held Friday morning at 11 o'clock from the Negley Methodist Episcopal church. Burial will be made at Clarkson.
Among the East Palestine persons who will attend the funeral are O.L. Butts and F.P. Addis, nephews of the deceased.
I am looking for information on John Cope born 1855 (Altho some references say born 1858)in Dublin, Ireland. John's parents were John Cope and Maria also born in Dublin, Ireland. John Cope (1855) had a brother Albert Edward and sisters Emma. Eliza and Adelaide or Adeline.
John and Maria were born in 1830's and we are looking for more info here and going further back. I have just had DNA matches to a Goodin (Goodwin) in Florida and a Parker in Canada and these 2 families lines go back to London/Bath/Scotland so need to find the connections here also. Griffith Davies from Wales and Sarah Gratton from Filleigh in Devon are also related on the maternal side

Samuel COPE family of Harrison Co. OHIO c.1840

Seeking information on the family of Samuel Cope, born 1792 in East Bradford, McKean Co., PA.
He moved to Ohio and had ten children with his wife Jane Moore. Samuel died 1865 in Nottingham, Harrison Co., OH.
Children: Margaret, Thomas, David, Martha, Samuel, Jacob, Mary A., Nancy Jane, Isreal, and Robert C.
The 1850 census also has a 13 yr. old named Hiram Cope in the household. This is my great-great-grandfather, whom I know little about. This census connects him to Samuel, however other sources do not list him as Samuel's son.
Is he Samuel's son? Is he adopted? Or might he be the son of Samuel's 2nd daughter Martha?
Martha died in 1841 when Hiram was only 4 yrs. old so maybe she's Hiram's mother!
Any clues as to Hiram's parentage, or on the family in general, would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.......Gary E.
Hi,

I am looking for information on the following Cope family.

My grandfather, Paul Brown was the son of Edith Mae Cope Brown (B: 1899 in Grundy Co.?, TN), daughter of Sylvester D.
Oliver Cope

Bobbye:

I don't imagine if that particular article is on the web. I noted this one because there are so many Cope descendants connecting to Oliver Cope (1647-1697) through Gilbert Cope and his writings. Perhaps, like your brick wall, this might reveal information that would help their genealogy. And this is such a small article it might be missed. The complete title is "with Further Evidence of Fraud in the Claimed Gentry Pedigree". The author, Leslie Mahler, states that contemporary evidence shows that Oliver Cope of Pennsylvania was the grandson of William Cope of Wroughton, Wiltshire.
You could send for a copy of the article by interlibrary loan through your library or just ask your librarian what library carries "The American Genealogist" and contact that library for a copy.

Gayle

Oliver Cope's Will 1697

Oliver Cope wrote his Will in May 1697. He begins by stating he is of New Castle County (Delaware) which would be correct (somehwat) in that his residence was below the PA line, BUT there was also a residence at Backington on Naaman's Creek near Philadelphia. At any rate, Wright has listed Oliver Cope's Will in his book on Philadelphia Wills. So I need to know, was this Will recorded in Philadelphia and not New Castle Co.? I want to obtain a full transcription of the Will and need to know whom to ask and where it is before I do and waste someone's time. Thanks

Cope from KY to Champaign & Vermilion Counties in IL

Jacob Cope b-1856 & Julia Ann Holland or Hollandsworth b-1861 traveled from Clay County, KY to Vermilion County, IL. They had the following children, most of them born in Indianola, Vermilion, IL:

John Wesley Cope b-1877
Samuel May Cope b-1884 m-1906 to Minnie Mae Payne
Verinda Jane Cope b-1886 m-1901 to James Benton Payne
Rachael Lee Cope b-1888 m-1904 to Henry Frederick Anders
William Albert Cope b-1890

I have not yet confirmed a DOD of 1894 for Jacob Cope, but by 1900 Julia Ann was remarried & living in Champaign, IL, with the youngest three children. She died in 1903 of TB. And, yes, that's no typo, her daughters married very young--Verinda was a few days shy of her 15th birthday.

At this point the goals are to find out if James & Minnie Payne were siblings, & to fill in the blanks on John Wesley & William Albert. Also, any proof of Julia Ann's Cherokee heritage would be welcome. I do have a few more dates & information on the children of Samuel, Verinda & Rachael that I'm glad to share with those interested.

Copes in Tennessee

Still looking for any information, on William (Will) Cope married to Josie (Josephine?) Waddle. Date unknown. Josie's maiden was Ingram, (spelling could be different) I think her mothers name was Sally. Will and Josie's children were James Montraville (this also could be spelled differently) Clarence McKinley, Gertrude, and Laura (Lurie) for sure. An possibly there could have been a Theodore, Alvie?, Les or Lester, and Commi. My grandfather James Mont., came from Byrdstown, Tenn. about 1900, to Southeast Oklahoma.
Can anyone put me in touch with someone from that area of Tenn. who might have had relatives there, or who specializes on the Cope family.
Thank you,
Sharon Cope Clifton

Susan Bennett m. Rev. Wm. C. Cope/Ontario & Michigan

Susan (or Susannah) BENNETT was the sister of my great great grandmother, Magdalene Bennett WOODEN (1819 -1870, buried in Pioneer Cemetery, Burford, Ontario, Canada). They were daughters of Josiah Bennett and Elizabeth DEPEW. Any information re: the children and descendants of Susan and Rev. Wm. C. COPE would be appreciated.

Here's a cute story that relates to the Neffs: As a young boy my great grandfather Charles Nelson Wooden (or Woodin) of Burford Ontario was great friends with Robert COPE and Peter NEFF (I believe they were probably all cousins as well). C.N. was nicknamed "Sust" because of his speed afoot. Bob Cope was nicknamed "Duke" and Peter Neff was "Penn". When the Copes decided to move to Michigan Charles and Bob spent a last day together and on the way home Charles decided to go to Michigan. Since he had no money they borrowed $10 from John Fowler and went. On the train they entertained people with the mouth-organ and the Jew's harp and collected a bit of money that way. They had to put up over night in a hotel and during the night the bed collapsed. Charles, having read stories where travellers had been let into the cellar by wicked landlords and murdered, yelled, "Jump for your life, Duke, they are letting us into the cellar!".
Cope Family of England-PA-VA-OH

I am a Hilligas family researcher but I just typed this up so thought I would share it!

"Carroll and Harrison Counties, Ohio Volume II" (publ. 1921)
November 11, 1869, was recorded the marriage of Mr. Hilligas to Miss Rachel A. Cope, a daughter of the late Isaac and Abigail (Cope) Cope, representatives of old and influential pioneer families of Harrison County [Ohio]. Oliver Cope came from Wiltshire, England to American in the year 1701 and settled in Pennsylvania; representatives of the family later became settlers in Virginia, and it was from that state that came the original representatives of the family to what is now Harrison County, Ohio, the migration to this county having occurred in 1813. John Cope was the founder of the family in this county, where he remained until his death, his widow whose maiden name was Grace Steer, having been ninety-two years of age at the time of her death, March 30, 1885…. Isaacc, former owner of the old homestead now owned by the Hilligas family, having been born February 1, 1801 and his death having occurred December 19, 1883, and his wife, a member of a collateral branch of the same family, survived him by several years.
Andrew Cope, Rev. War soldier

I can share a little information on the Revolutionary War service of Andrew Cope, extracted from his pension application file.

Background: Around 1750, Jost Kop was an original member of Ziegel's Church in Weisenberg Township, then Northampton County, now Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. Captain Henry Hagenbuch's company of associators, drawn mostly from Weisenberg Township, included "John Cup, Ludwick Cup, Andres Cupp, and George Cupp." This company fought at Long Island and Fort Washington and suffered greatly in British captivity. Andrew also went on to fight in the Philadelphia campaign of 1777. He apparently moved to New York later in life.

I have retyped the short extract from the pension application file as an MS Word document with annotations. If anyone would like me to attach it to an e-mail, just let me know.
