PETERSEN--ERICKSEN--HERRICKSEN-----Frederiksborg----SS Hector

I am looking for Martha PETERSEN and Lewis ERICKSEN who are both in Ohio, USA, in 1910. Martha had siblings Russell, Sam, and Tilda (married a Bureaguard?). Lewis had siblings Joe and Agnes. Martha's parents stayed in Denmark. Lewis' mother came to America, I believe. Family stories say both were born in Copenhagen, however, I have found a Martha born 1 Sep 1884 (right year) in Horsholm, Frederiksborg, Denmark, daughter of Hans Lauritz PETERSEN and Marie Sophie ERIKSEN (coincidence in name!). Also, Lewis served on the SS Hector from age 14-21 (approx 1989-1905) traveling back and forth to Philadelphia with animal hides, bones, and skulls for a fertilizer plant. According to family lore, he "jumped ship," thus there is no immigration record. I also cannot find any record for Martha's immigration. Help

Possible meanings of Copenhagen.

Hello I am a descendant of August Copenhagen and I live in Missouri. I recently read in a thread that August came from a town in Lower Saxony, Niedersachsen, in Germany. I decided to ask a question on the German version of yahoo answers as I speak a little German. One person gave two possible answers.

A. It is possible that it comes from the old spelling for Kopenhagen which is the capital city of Denmark. Perhaps a sailor or traveler assumed the name upon relocation.

B. Won't go deeply into this one. It involves some old spelling in older forms of German. Combines some words together and basically a Copenhagen would be an owner of a wooded hill, which would make sense since the region appears to be both hilly and wooded.

Though this was some interesting stuff.

Hi Lyndon! My grandfather was Rolla Edward Copenhagen and was your Greatgrandfather's brother. I have heard of the Ollar Family through my Dad ,Curt, and my Granddad as I recall. I have two sisters,Lisa and Carla.
I was a dairy farm herdsman for several years while in my 20's and raised my own cattle hoping to have my own dairy someday. That did not work out do to finances and I ended up working in a paper mill for the last 23+ years in Longview,Wa.I raised, trained and rode quarterhorses for several years however now my current ride is a Harley-Davidson! Thanks for responding to my letter. Your cousin, Cope.

Hello, my name is Lyndon Ollar and I grew up around Alton. My great grandfather was Lellous Basel Copenhagen. My family owns a farm that was built off of and includes the land where he built his house. The house is still in family possession and after I graduate next semester am actually planning on living in it for a year. If you would like to know more or tell me something about the Copenhagens that I don't know that would be great.

Thanks for the response. My grandparents came to America in the 1920's after the Russian Revolution. They came from the same area. Any mention of the family being aristocracy? My grandmother told me the family was pre-revolution. She was Anna Copenhagen, and the family was very big (many brothers, sisters and cousins). And the K was dropped and changed to a c when they arrived at Ellis Island, NY. I wish I knew the names of my great grandparents and especially great-grandpa Kopenhagen's brothers and sisters but I don't. I would imagine he was born mid 1800's but I don't. I kept the name Copenhagen in memory of my grandma and her family cause now they are all deceased on that branch of the Copenhagen tree. I will try to do more research. Thanks again!

Here's what I know: our "Copenhagen's" were actually Pick's whose father died in an accident shortly after coming to America in about 1881. They were adopted by Theodore Kopenhagen when he married their mother in 1882. There were many step-sisters and brothers in this blended family, but most of them ended up on the West Coast. I am a descendant of Henry Copenhagen, whose brothers were Otto and Herman. They must have changed the spelling when they came West. The Picks came from Hamburg, Germany, were Evangelical Lutherans. The Kopenhagen's (Theodor and Minnie) came from Prussia sometime before 1874. You can find them in the 1880 census in Chicago. The Kopenhagen family lived northwest of Chicago in Des Plaines where they grew vegetables and hauled them into Chicago to market.
Hi, my maiden name was Christine Copenhagen, and we have a big family of Copenhagens out here on the West Coast. My grandfather and his brothers came from Hamburg Germany in 1881. Their second week in America, their father fell off a roof and died. The Lutheran Church in Chicago matched their mother, Emma, up with a widower, Thomas Copenhagen. He adopted all the children. They worked at truck farming around Des Plains near Chicago. Here are some of the Copenhagen siblings: Otto, Herman, Henry, Martha, Willy, George, Annie, May and Hattie. Do any of the names connect with you? The three brothers went West in about 1895, and that's how we all came to be living in Oregon, California and Washington.

This is in response to Sandra Limbach's inquiry. There are two Chris's in this wing of cousins. I'm Christine, female and the oldest of us cousins. Kris Copenhagen is my youngest 1st cousin, and he is also interested in genealogy. I probably have a head start on him, but I don't have the whole story for sure. You can get the tree at my website, "Chris' Place".

Hi, wondering about the original "roots" of all the Copenhagen's on this board from the old world. Exploring to see if there is any connection. My grandparents came to the U.S. in the early 1920's... What was Germany at the time.

Copenhagen family from Prussia

My great grandmother, LENA COPENHAGEN, was born in Rogasen, Prussia (now Rogozno Poland) on 25 Oct 1822. She married my great grandfather, MORRIS ROSENBERG, in 1841, came to America in 1848, first to N.Y. and then to CA in 1852. They ran a general store in the gold ruch area (Iowa Hill, Placer Co., CA) from 1854 to 1870, and then spent the rest of their days in Oakland, CA. They had 5 children, including Charles, my grandfather. I am looking for any Copenhagen relatives that may have been left behind in Prussia. Please advise.

Hi Chris, there seem to be two sets of Copenhagens...my ggrandfather, Carl August, came from Hamburg around 1856. He traveled with Augustus F. W. Schloesser and his mother Lousie Baeber Copenhagen Schloesser. We have not been able to find the ship or where they arrived. The family ended up in Kentucky, where Carl August had some land on the Ohio/Kentucky line. He married Adaline Willis and they and their family moved to South Central MO, where they remained. August and Addie had 7 children, Albert, Willis, Gussie, Birtie, Harry (my grandfather), Maude and Minnie. Willis had a son R.E.(Rolla) who moved to Portland, OR to teach. Do you have any information on the Germany side of your family? I have narrowed down the area from which August came, it is Pohlde in the district of Herzberg, located on the south foothills of the Harz mountain range. That information was on his sea chest. Evidently August's father died or left, as his mother married Schloesser. I would love to chat with you...my email is hickcros@flash.net.
Hi Pat! I have been to the Copenhagen Cemetery with my mother and aunt several years ago. You're right--it is on the old family homeplace. I remember seeing August's stone and Mom remarking that he died around the time she was born (1917). I also remember the number of "sand ticks" we got that day!
I will fax you some of my family sheets. I live in Edmond, Oklahoma. Where are you? If you'll send me your address I'll copy some of the other pictures for you.
"Moore's Shop" you referred to--was that a town? I've never heard of it. Where did you get that info?
I talked with my Aunt Grada, the widow of my Uncle Charlie Lewis, Maud Copenhagen Lewis's son, and she wondered if Harry was in the "tiff" between Maud and her sister Minnie. The story goes they got mad at each other and never spoke again. I never did know why.
I talked with a Kevin Copenhagen one time. I'd have to dig out in my notebook where he lived.
My e-mail is jdamiani@telepath.com if you'd like to use that way instead of this.
Check your fax. Is it in your home, or at work?
Jackie

Wonderful Copenhagens

Jackie - Yes, I'm having fun!!! I am 50 also with one child, a daughter 25, no grandkids. She is as excited about this as I am...as I told you before, I never even knew my grandfather Harry had siblings. I have only been on the internet for about a month (thanks to a generous boss) and it dawned on me to look for somebody else named Copenhagen. I do have a fax - 918-224-2136. I have gleaned a few minor facts since our last correspondence, there is a Copenhagen Cemetery that I believe is on what used to be Harry's farm, and the Copenhagen's are listed as one of the early families in "Moore's Shop" Oregon Co. MO, halfway between Thayer and Alton. I would love to hear from you again. Have you ever been in touch with or spoken to Patrick Copenhagen of St. James? He is my uncle Thurman's son. My sister, Mary said that at one time he was trying to gather information on the family to find out why we were not close like some others. I remember when Harry died in 1965, going to the funeral. His belongings were distributed then...I got his violin and Patrick got a guitar and a picture of August. I barely remember the picture, but August had a full beard and was very somber looking. Please send what information you can, and I will do the same. As I said, I have very limited facts at hand and am ignorant about digging for old information. I have been on the Ozark Co. GenWeb and got a little stuff. Thanks so much for answering, I look forward to hearing from you again. Pat

Isn't this fun? I will e-mail you soon but am wondering if you have a fax that I could send you some of my info. I have my genealogy on Family Tree Maker and could send you family sheets, etc. I BELIEVE I EVEN HAVE PICTURES IF THE COPENHAGENS! I am 50 and have been working on my genealogy since I was lucky enough to hear Alex Haley speak before his book "Roots" came out. I've been married for 18 years--my first and only marriage--but married a widower with 4 children, so my free time as I knew it disappeared that long ago. We have one son, John Lewis, that is almost 14. Our oldest is 34 and we have 2 grand daughters by our oldest and expecting another by our #1 son.
More later. Send me your fax if you have one. Jackie Lionberger Damiani

I cannot believe I got an answer...I thought all the Copenhagens fell off the face of the earth! It was not until a few days ago I learned that my grandfather Harry had siblings. My father was only 6 when August died, so his memories are few. He told my sister that he remembered Adaline (August's 2nd wife) was a very kind woman and had children of her own, who August raised as his own. I received an 1880 census report from Oregon Co, stating August was 43; wife Adaline 31; son Willis 10; son Gus 9; son Bird 5; and Harvey (whom I believe is Harry, I have seen the mistake before)was 2. I have info listing Maude's birthday as June 30, 1880. My gfather Harry had 5 children, Raymond Russell (my dad), Posey, William Paris, Jack, and Maudie (Ditty). I would love to correspond...I have many questions but very few answers. Please feel free to e-mail me at hickcros@flash.net.
