I am trying to get information about the ancestors of a Herbert Copley, the father of my maternal aunt.
Herbert would have been born in the late 19th Century (contemporaneous with the time of Joseph's marriage and move to Notts.).
He was a resident of Nottingham, and may have been born there.
He married Annie Maud Withnell and they had 2 children, Sydney and Irene. He worked at the Victoria Railway Station Telegraph Office, and after a period of ill health, he died in 1940.
I had come across the names of Robert and Joseph before but have been unable to say if there is a link to my family.
I was wondering if Herbert may perhaps have been the son of Joseph. Do you have any information on this?
Would much appreciate hearing from you.

The US censuses indicate William & Mary Roan Copley had no ch. The 1850 Cen shows Penicey, 17 & John, 14 living with George, Jr., but they are siblings not ch. William, John, & Penicey were 3 of the 14 ch of George & Susannah. Two doors fr George,& them in 1850 are William 25 & Sallie, 45. I believe that this is the William that Penicey m, but have not researched William nor Sallie. Tom DeZern

I have a George Copley, Jr. married to Mary "Polly" Roan on 18 Aug 1842. I have their children as Penisy, b about 1833 and John, b about 1836. I have Polly b about 1820. While possible, the dates seem unlikely, especially since I have Penisy marrying her uncle, William Copley. Any help in resolvoing this apparent issue would be appreciated!

James Copley and Celey Hearon

I am looking for documentary information that links my 5th great-grandfather James Copley/Coplea (b. 1775, Montgomery County, VA) and his wife Celey Hearon/Hearn (b. 1781, Wythe County, VA) with their parents. According to Wythe County records, they were married on 18 March 1800. The numerous histories that I have discovered, mostly on the internet, conflict and are not sourced. Some say, for instance, that James Copley is the son of William Copley and Zellah Geighart, while others say Thomas Copley and Mary Day are his parents. I've collected many census records and land/tax records but none seem to answer the question of who were James' parents. Where the histories say one way or the other, they don't explain or source their assertion. I am sure those of you who are researching this question also have experienced the complexity added by the other Copley family in the area with similar names, the county boundary shifts during that time period, second marriages, and the moving around the country (VA-IL-UT). I welcome anyone's help and would be happy to share everything I've found to get to the bottom of this mystery. Thanks!

As someone who has a greater interest in this than many, I've done a fair amount of digging.

I believe the most likely position is that given by William Paley Baildon in 2 articles in the Proceedings of the Thoresby Society, in 1926 and 1928. He starts

The earlier portions of the printed pedigrees of the Copleys consists of the usual tissue of absurdities and fabrications. Adam Copley, we are gravely told, was killed at the seige of York in 1070, a favourite beginning of the Elizabethan pedigree mongers.

They did know how to write a good put-down in those days!

It's one of several myths about the Copleys. I have tried to summarise all that I know on-line, at

http://sites.google.com/site/copleyhistory/Home

John Copley

I am researching my father's line. My father's name is Carmel Copley, his father's name is Benjamin Copley listed on the 1920 census in Washington County Arkansas as Bennie with Luella as his mother and Winfield as Bennie's father. Bennie married my grandmother Verna Pennel in Prarie Grove Arkansas in 1923 as I found the marriage certificate on line. I guess Ance and Ira explain why I have a twin brother and sister. My grandmother divorced Benjamin and moved to Missouri. The only thing I know about Benjamin is that he was in jail.

Myron and Wardner Lawrence

I'm looking for info two sons of Eliza (Todd) and Richard Lawrence from St. Lawrence Co., NY. Wardner was born Feb 9, 1883 in St. Lawrence Co., Ny, married Mary Ellen Davidson; and he died March 26, 1946 in Louisiana. Myron was born Dec. 30, 1880. He first married Uraine Lucia Lescale in September 1915, she died in June 1916. He then marries Lucie Marie Sondack in July 1947. Both marriages took place in Louisiana. Myron died October 28, 1956. Myron and Lucie lived at 4716 Canal Street, which Lucie sold after Myron's death, which was in August 1958. She moved from New Orleans, in fact out of Louisiana. The info I'm looking for is: (1) did Wardner and Mary Ellen had any children?, (2) Did Myron and Lucie have any children? (3) where are Wardner and Mary Ellen buried? and (4) where in Orleans Parish are Myron and Uraine buried?. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

RUBY COPLEY /JORDAN
I am looking for info on Ruby Copley; she was my paternal grandmother and passed away in the late 80s I believe.
She married my grandfather Charles Theodore Justice in (I think) Greenup, KY Aug, 21, 1936. They had 3 children: a son (my Dad) and two daughters.

I am having a very tough time finding information on Ruby's parents and her siblings. I know my great-grandmother was Ora, but legend has it that she had quite a few husbands: the last names I have come up with are Copley, Jordan, Sheets, and Bailey. I hear Ruby's biological father did not end up being the man who raised her. However with all of Ora's husbands I have no idea who the biological or stepfather is. There seems to be an endless list of half and step-children as well, and I cannot make sense of it all for the life of me!
If anyone one has any information, I'd love to hear it. (There is a post on here with an inquiry about Ruby, but it is from 2005; I replied via email to the poster, but thought I'd take a shot on the board itself. )

I have heard the story of Adam being killed in the rebellion at York in 1069 but I have also heard it described as romantic fiction.
If Adam had rebelled against the Normans and been killed then wouldn't his family have also been killed in the harrowing of the north which followed in reprisal.
On the other hand in 1220 Jordan de Talvace granted land at Skircoat in Halifax to Hugh, son of Thomas de Talvace. Hugh adopted the name of Copley.
John de Talvace was vicar of Halifax in 1185 and a brother in law of third Earl Warren- See "The Story of Old Halifax" p34.
Stuart

I am trying to find out more information about Daisy Copley she gave birth to Eric Copley in Dec 1919 at the Salvation Army home, Spring Grove House, Alexander Road, Leeds. Eric was Fostered to Jack and Annie Pacey. If any one can help with any information about Daisy. I think she may have been living in Doncaster Road, Rotherham.

I am almost brand new to genealogy (my mom has done tons) so I have decided to take on the Copleys. All we have had is James Copley, b 18 April 1775, married to Zella Geighart and their daughter, Achsah (my direct ancestor). I have recently received info from Adam Copley (1351) through Thomas Coopley (1736) md to Mary Day. I can't make the connection and I need the proof notes. Can you help?
Forever grateful if you can, Jan
