Re: My Mother's maiden name was Cord

I am an historian writing a book on the Lincoln Douglas Debate in Jonesboro, Illinois, for the 150th anniversary of the event. A part of the book includes information on the people living in Jonesboro in 1858. Can you supply me with information on Martha Cord, born ca. 1795 in Georgia. She was on the 1850 census of Fleming Co., Ky., and the 1860 census of Jonesboro, Union Co., Ill. Living in Illinois with her in 1860 were her 19-year-old son, George W. Cord, and her 68-year-old slave, Dina Cord.

What was Martha's maiden name? What was the name of her husband. Since she was the head of the household in Kentucky in 1850, I think her husband died before then. Why did they settle in Jonesboro? Were there relatives there?

Martha moved to St. Clair Co., Ill., and died there in January or February 1865. She left her estate to her children, Theodore O. Cord, George W. Cord, Ferdinand L. Cord, and Harriet J. McCarty.

Is there a connection between Martha Cord and the McCord (or McChord) family? In 1855 in Jonesboro, Illinois, M.L. McChord and his wife, N.E. McChord were the principal and assistant principal of Jonesboro Academy in Jonesboro, Illinois. I cannot find them on the 1860 census. I did notice several McCord families living in Fleming Co., Ky., in the early 1800s.

Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated and credited in the book. Please forward this to anyone who might be able to assist me.

Darrel Dexter
darreldexter@hotmail.com
I am descended from Aquila Cord and Milcha Browning Cord who migrated from Maryland to what is now Fleming Co., Ky around 1800. Some of their descendents ended up moving into Indiana and Illinois in the latter 1800's. I know of several Daisy Cords in this family. One of whom was my Dad's mother's sister, Daisy Cord. She never married and had moved to Crawfordsville, Ind. by the time of her death, after 1945. I have much info on this family and on the Maryland antecedents, if you are interested.

Sandy,

I am a decendent of the Cord family. Most of my family is from Bourbon Co., KY. The area you mention in your message is very close to my area. I would like to see if there may be a connection. I don't know where the rest of my Cord's came from. The only info I have is on my grandfather and his father. Please contact me, if you don't mind sharing your info. It would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Gail Asbury

P.S. By chance, were the people you mentioned Cherokee? The reason is, my great grandmother on my grandfather's side was Cherokee

Sandy,

I was going over some of my own research and discovered Aquila Cord on the Unclaimed mail list for Montgomery County, IN ( I believe the date was Oct. 5, 1832. I am doing research on Mikels, Michaels, Hudspeth, Craven, Sutton, Sutherland, Pickerell. These people all were in Nelson, Washington, Marion Counties, KY in the early 1800's, moving into the North by way of ILL and IN.

I am researching (for a cousin of mine) a Miss Aroma Cord, who married a John Carl Meyer in Champaign Co., IL in 1886. She was born about 1866 in Indiana. I believe her father may have been Simeon A. Cord, married to Milly (Milka?) Cawthorne in 1865 in Putnam Co., IN. Simeon was born in KY, but I haven't been able to establish where, or who his parents are. If Aroma or Simeon have turned up anywhere in your KY, IN or IL Cords, I would be very interested.

I am descended from the Cord family of Fleming Co., Ky who originally migrated from Baltimore Co., Md. c. 1800 Some of those in Ky moved on to Illinois and Indiana and some from Md. moved on to Illinois without going through Ky. There is a Cord family out there that originated in Germany apparently but many of the other Cords are descended from the original Thomas Cord first seen in Baltimore Co. in 1676. I have 3 Charles Cords listed in my family. So it is a family name.

My name is Mike Morelock. My Mother's maiden name was Cord. Her father was Charles Cord., I never knew him. He died long before I was born. He was from a place called Cuba, Illinois(I bekieve that is correct). He would have been born around 1880. He married my Grandmother Maude Goldwire...she was from near Albany, Georgia. They lived in New Orleans. I do not know when he died...she died in 1966...To my knowledge, my Grandmother had no sons...I know almost nothing about his family except I am told that his Mother and Father were from Ireland..his Mother's maiden name was Elanor Kelly and she was from County Cork. She was supposed to have been a very tiny woman, so much so in fact, that most people thought she was my Great Grandfather's daughter..not his wife. Can anyone help me with any infor on my Grandfather...Charles Cord? Thanks. Mike morelock@sprintmail.com

William Cord, b. abt 1868 in Alabama

I am looking for information on a William L. Cord who was born about 1868 in Alabama. He married a woman named Lena, who was born in Texas about 1873, about 1890. They were living in Eddy County, New Mexico in 1930. They had one daughter named Sarah H., who was born about 1897. I am guessing that there were other children. Sarah married Robert P. Morrison, who was born 15 September 1895 in Texas, about 1916 probably in Texas. Sarah and Robert had three children, Lena Catherine, Margaret Louise and Robert P., Jr. Sarah died in Eddy County, New Mexico in 1922.
