Hi Virginia, I live in South Jersey outside Camden.I even have a picture of Bertha somewhere. When I find it I will post it on her Ancestry page and let you know. Can you get on my Tree? It is Penn/Whalen and has all kinds of things on the Bakley's. That is what I am still doing as you can tell from me still being on-line tonight. Yes, I remember Leona. My GrMom was very close to her siblings so as I grew up, I spent some time with the Bakley's.She was the next to youngest child of Franklin and Mary. I have some pics of Mary Groff and Franklin I can send you also. My e-mail is nancywhalen@comcast.net so lets correspond there.

Thank you so much for this info. I thought I would never find any info on Bertha. I did know she was born in 1888. I wished I had asked my Grandmother about her parents. And yes any other information you can share would be great. By the way my name is Virginia. Do you know of a Leonia Bakley? My mom remembers that name. My Dad Bertha's grandson passed away in 1993.
I am so excited!! This is so much fun finding new stuff about your family. My family and I live in Northern New Jersey. Where are you?

Well I hope I hear from you again. And thank you so very much.
Virginia

Just left you a message on the Ancestry message. Please let me know what info you would like on Bertha as she was my grandmother's sister. Her father's name was Franklin Leopold Bakley and mother was Mary C. Groff. Bertha was born Oct 1888 probably in Camden, NJ. She was the first child ( grandmother was second child) with 8 siblings, 3 of which died as children. Let me know if you would like anymore info. I have a little more on the Bakley's and Groff's.

Unfortunately that's all I know about this Corkhill family. And yes, the name seems to have had many different spellings over the years. There's a site "Manx notebook" that has enormous amounts of information. On the 1871 Liverpool census, living in the household of my 3x great grandparents ( Henry and Catherine Boardman) there was a boarder listed by the name of Edward Corkhill. It states that he was 16, a sailor and born on the IOM. Perhaps he was a relative.

Hello. I'd just like to repost my interest in the family of John and Esther CORKILL / CORKHILL of the Lezayre Parish (Ramsey) on the Isle of Man.

They had ten children there, and I am descended from their son, Evan CORKILL, one of the oldest. They were married in 1822, and he was born in 1827.

Around 1858, he married Elizabeth QUAYLE (?) in Liverpool, England, and they began living there. Their five children were born there between 1860 and 1871.

Around 1872/1873, Mrs. Elizabeth CORKILL died, and in 1873 the children were placed in the "Liverpool Sheltering Homes." In 1874, they were "shipped to Canada" as "British Home Children." (In England, "child migrants.") When they arrived in Nova Scotia, at Ages 14 to 3 ..., they were separated and each went to live with a different family.

Hi Liz. My ancestors were John and Esther CORKILL / CORKHILL, who were married in the Lezayre Parish in 1822. I believe that Ramsey is part of that Parish.

They had ten children there, and my ancestor, Evan CORKILL, was one of their older children. As an adult, he became a Mariner, and he really doesn't appear there in the 1851 Census. Around 1858, he married in Liverpool, England, and moved there. I believe his wife's name was Elizabeth QUAYLE, but I don't know anything about her parents, etc.

I didn't get much research done during 2004. In past years I found out that there were several different CORKILL families living on the Isle of Man during the 1800's, possibly in many of the Parishes. There seems to have been CORKILL's there from the late 1700's.

So far, I have seen the name spelled, CORKILL, CORKHILL, COCKILL, CORNHILL, and CORKHILS.

Hello. I just wanted to say that it is good to see activity on this Message Board.

My CORKILL / CORKHILL's were from the Isle of Man. Evan was born there in 1827. As an adult, he was a Mariner, so I don't know how much time he spent on the IOM. In the 1850's he married in Liverpool, England, and then moved there.

Evan was one of ten children, and I don't remember having found anyone researching them. The parents were John and Esther CORKILL of the Lezayre Parish (near Ramsey).

Evan married an Elizabeth QUAYLE (?), and I haven't found out about her yet.
William Corkhill

I have located a William Corkhill who resided for some time in Lawrence, MA. He was known to be there in late 1896 and joined the Knights of Phythias in that city. From there he disappears. I cannot locate him prior to 1896 and therefore GUESS he may have immigrated from England, possibly brother of Mary Ellen Corkhill Dunbar, son of William and Elizabeth of Liverpool, England. The younger William would have been aged 21 in 1896. If you find any other information about him, I would appreciate knowing. I own a pocket watch that belonged to him and would like to know more of the history of the former owner.

William Corkhill

Just got your reply to my previous post concerning William Corkhill who resided for a time in Lawrence, MA. I have little information about him except he was 21 when he lived there and joined the Knights of Pythas. I have a pocket watch with the Knights logo, the name William Corkhill, Lawrence, MA. When I wrote to the current Knights of Phythas, they were able to give me very little information, except what I basically already knew from the watch. However, it is rare for someone to join such an organization and have a pocket watch made or given to them at such an early stage. I thought perhaps a relative may have given it to him? Any other information will be appreciated.

Hi Betty
Thanks for the information. I really know nothing at all about "my" William Corkhill other than the Lawrence, MA connection. I am only guessing that he immigrated from England because I can find no references to him prior to the late 1800's and none after.
Corkhill is not a family name, rather I am curious as to the owner of the pocket watch that I bought. I would love to hear if you ever connect young William Corkhill to any of the people you are researching! Thanks again!

I was born 7/13/1976. My Parents are Charles Edward Corkhill and Maria Corazon Sundiam.

My Father was born 10/22/1952. His Parents were Richard Michael Corkhill and Norma Jean Jumps. I know he died sometime during the Vietnam era due to a motorcycle accident.

My grandfather was born 10/10/1925. His Parents were Charles Nesbitt or Edward Corkhill b: 14 NOV 1898 and Helen (Nellie) Elizabeth Schumacher b: 14 MAR 1901.

This is where my trail ends. I was just going through my folders of CORKILL / CORKHILL papers, and I discovered someone had sent me Census information on my ancestors.

In 1841 in Ramsey (College St.), Mrs. Esther CORKILL, widow, was living with her children:

John, 15
Evan, 14
Margaret, 10
Robert, 9
Anne, 6
Lewis, 4
Catherine, 1

Children not mentioned on this Census are:

William, should have been ~15
James, should have been ~8

I hear that several different CORKILL / CORKHILL men and/or families moved from the IOM to Liverpool in the mid-1800's.

Hello. I thought it would help if I posted the information on my ancestors and some of their children:

Lezayre Parish (Ramsey ??)

John CORKILL married Esther _____ on 9/28/1822

John William CORKILL, born 5/25.1823

Evan CORKILL, born on 3/23/1827 (my gr-gr-grandfather)

Margaret CORKILL, born 5/10/1829

Robert CORKILL, born 11/2/1831

James CORKILL, born 9.25.1833

Margaret Ann CORKILL, born 6/12/1834?? (?)

Anne CORKILL, born on 7/26/1835

Lewis Corkill was born on 9/9/1837

They reportedly had ten children, but I don't have the complete list handy at the moment. I have no proof of any of the above; it is information I found on-line.

I have seen their names spelled both CORKILL and CORKHILL.

(I've also seen it spelled for other people: CORNHILL and COCKILL, etc.)

I would like to find out the parents of John and Esther CORKILL who were married in the Lezayre Parish in 1822.

And, I would like to know if anyone else is researching this family.

My 3x great grandmother, Catherine Corlett, had a sister Margaret Corlett who was born abt. 1796 in Ramsey, Isle of Man. Margaret married John Corkhill on Mar. 31, 1817 in Ramsey. They went on to have many children according to the LDS site. I believe they moved to Co. Derry, Ireland because my 2x great grandmother, Eliza Boardman Healey visited from her home in Liverpool. Anything known of this family?

Hi Elizabeth. I forgot to mention that, if you want more people to help you, you really need to mention the approximate years when your relatives lived.

For instance, do you know when your great-great-grandfather,
Michael CORKILL, was born? Or, do you know when his children were born?

And, the Benjamin CORKILL, do you know when he might have moved to the USA? And, did he come directly to the USA, or could he have moved to Canada first? Would Benjamin have come to North America in the 1800's or 1900's?

My great-grandmother was born with the name, Mary Elizabeth CORKILL (1858 or 1860 in Liverpool). She and her four younger siblings lost their mother in 1873, and were sent to live in the Liverpool Sheltering Homes. In 1874, all of them were "sent to Canada" as "child migrants."
(In Canada, they are known as "British Home Children." All of them were sent to live in different homes in Nova Scotia.

I believe their father, Evan CORKILL, was still alive, and he re-married a few years later (to another Elizabeth), and they lived in West Derby. He probably didn't have any more children, as he probably was an older man at this time.

Hi Elizabeth. Thank you for writing. I just checked the message I posted in 2000, the one you responded to, and I have found new information since then.

Yes, the CORKILL name is on the Isle of Man and goes back to the early 1700's, at least. However, I have found out that it originally goes back to surnames, like McCORKLE. (There is a web site which tells the story of this surname.)

A quick summary of my family is that Evan CORKILL, my great-great-grandfather, was born on the Isle of Man in 1827, the son of John and Esther? CORKILL. They had many children. I have not traced John CORKILL back, but they seem to have been on the Isle of Man going back into the early 1700's.

Evan CORKILL married in the 1850's. He might have married Elizabeth QUAYLE in Liverpool, England, but they don't seem to have been living there at the time. They might have been still living on the IOM. But, they might have moved to Liverpool, as they reportedly had five children born in Liverpool in the 1855 to 1870 timeframe.

(I'm not positive on the QUAYLE surname, although there was a CORKILL / QUAYLE marriage in Liverpool in the 1850's)

If you check my other messages on this CORKILL Message Board, and the one at www.genforum.com
you will find a few other pieces of information.

And, there are other researchers studying this family on the Isle of Man. So, if you use a "search engine" for the name, CORKILL, you will probably find other information.

In my great-grandmother's family, I have found two spellings of the name, CORKILL and CORKHILL. And, I have also seen it spelled .. CORNHILL and COCKILL, etc.

There is a web site for the Isle of Man .. and that Message Board has CORKILL information also.

I THOUGHT that my 3xgreat grandmother's maiden name was HUNT but now it may be CORKHILL. On my 2x great grandmother's(Eliza Boardman Healey Burgess) death cert from NSW, 1925, it states her mother's maiden name as Catherine CORKHILL. The IGI shows her maiden name was HUNT. Census records have her being born on IOM. I see on the boards that CORKHILL is a Manx name. Anyone have a missing Catherine CORKHILL that was born IOM abt 1812-14? She later emigrated to Liverpool and married Henry Boardman in 1840. She died Liverpool 1889.

Corkhill Family Tree

Hi, My great-grandmother was born Mary Elizabeth Corkhill (sp?) around 1860 somewhere in Great Britain. She was one of the British Home Children. Many people have written to me about them. One suggested that Corkhill is a surname from the Isle of Man, and that they have their own "Message Board" and there is also a Manx "Message Board." I left a message on both (I think). But, now I'm getting a dozen e-mails per day about British Home Children, and I'm not keeping track of whichiswhich! ALSO, I heard from a man in Australia whose last name is CORNHILL. He couldn't find any other CORNHILL's, and thought is family line was dying out. I wrote back to tell him what happened to my great-grandmother's last name. I don't think he's responded yet. I have also seen the name spelled COCKILL and COCKHILL. So, in your search, you might try different spellings.

Hi Bob, I had written to you before, but I only spoke in generalities. Two days ago I received brand-new information which shows that my great-grandmother, nee' Mary Elizabeth Corkhill, might not have been an orphan, after all. She was born in Liverpool, England, around 1860. But, in 1874, around Age 13, she sailed out of Liverpool and went to Canada. There is some indication that she and her "young lover," John "Stanley" Lewis, Age 14, might have "run away from home" together - and sailed to Canada. They married in Nova Scotia in 1879. Two days ago I received the information off of their Marriage Certificate. She listed her parents as Eben and Elizabeth Corkhill. He was a Master Mariner. They had Mary in 1860, so they might have been born between 1820-1840. Someone from RootsWeb told me that that family originally came from the Isle of Man. And, he read in the 1881 Census that Evan and Elizabeth Corkhill were still living in Liverpool. And, he said that Evan's parents were probably John and Esther Corkhill, who were probably born around 1800 or thereabouts. Do you think they might have been related to your Corkhill ancestors?

Hi Bob, I don't know what subliminal suggestion you made this morning, but I have spent the entire day researching the CORKHILL surname. What I have found is that there are at least four spellings of this surname in different places, and in different documents. ... And, just a few minutes ago, I found out that I had found the wrong girl! My great-grandmother wasn't Mary CORNHILL, a BHC, sailing in 1874, she was a Mary CORKILL, a BHC, sailing in 1875. I had picked the first Mary because my great-grandfather had also sailed in 1874. When I re-checked the information off of the Marriage Certificate, I discovered the spelling of the name as Mary CORKILL. .... Just for your information, this afternoon I found at least NINE...British Home Children... had one of the above surnames: Mary Cornhill, Mary Corkill, and Margaret Corkhill. Mary, Julia, Esther, John, and Robbie CORKILL all sailed to Halifax in 1874-75, and were probably siblings. Then there were Kolet Corkhill (female), sailed 1910, and Alfred Corkhill, sailed 1887. ..... What I have also found is that many, many people went by their middle names - so records might not be found. .... If you have some free time, you might want to "subscribe" to the ROOTSWEB LIST for the British Home Children! Oh, the stories you'll read! What an education you will receive!

Corkhill Family Tree

Hi, I just found your message. The maiden name of my great-grandmother was Mary Elizabeth Corkhill. We have always believed that she and my great-grandfather, John "Stanley" Lewis, were two of the ORPHANS shipped out of Great Britain during the late 1800's. But, 2 days ago, I received the information off of their Marriage Certificate from Truro, Nova Scotia. As it turns out, they might have lied about being orphans, instead might have been teen-age lovers who were "running away from home." ... The Marriage Certificate lists the parents of Mary Elizabeth Corkhill as Eben and Elizabeth Lewis of Liverpool, England. Mary Elizabeth was born between 1858 - 1860 in Liverpool. She and "Stanley" were 14 13 when they left Liverpool in 1874. Someone from Liverpool just e-mailed me to say that there was an Eban and Elizabeth Corkhill in Liverpool in 1881, and they probably came from the Isle of Man. I have not yet learned about any siblings for my great-grandmother. But, after they married in Truro, NS, "Stanley" and Mary migrated to Boston, MA, and had a total of 13 children, mostly while living in Stoneham, MA. And, "Stanley" Lewis ran an independent newspaper there for many years. That would have happened somewhere between the years, 1880 to 1910. (Just a note: Stoneham and Lawrence, MA, are not that far apart.)

Hi Carol, for several reasons I have concentrated on Corkhill/Corkill research today. I went to the BHC records, and I did not find a William or Mary Corkhill listed, however, they were the right age to have been some of the British orphans shipped out of Liverpool in the late 1800's. ... I have just found out that I had found the wrong woman. My great-grandmother wasn't Mary Cornhill who sailed out of Liverpool in 1874, it was Mary Corkill who sailed out of Liverpool in 1875. ... Wow, what confusion! There were at least 9 probably more BHC children who had different variations on the Corkhill name, but I believe that it is a surname from the Isle of Man, and that the other versions are the misspelled versions. I will keep an eye out for your William and Mary Corkhill while learning more about the British Home Children.

Hi, My great-grandmother was born Mary Elizabeth Corkhill, and she was one of the "British Home Children." She was shipped out of Liverpool in the summer of 1874, and was supposed to go to Quebec. I just found out about the BHC web sites this weekend, and found a little more information. We were always told that she and my great-grandfather, Stanley Lewis, had met on the ship and had both sailed into Halifax, Nova Scotia, where they eventually married. The BHC info says things were a little different, but that doesn't mean their info is correct. Nonetheless, my great-grandmother was from Great Britain. The paper states that she was 13 in the summer of 1874, but my sister says she was 10. Either way, she would have been born somewhere around 1860. The info sheet says she came to Canada with a group of other orphans headed by Rev. Stephenson.

Hi, When I wrote that message in March, my name got left off. I just wanted to let people know that it is Betty in Massachusetts who is searching for any information at all about the parents and siblings of this lady, who was about 13 years old when she sailed out of Liverpool, England, during the summer of 1874. I now understand that her name could have been either Cornhill or Corkhill, and that she might have come from the Isle of Man. Does anyone know any boys or girls from the Corkhill or Cornhill families in Liverpool, England, during the 1850's to 1880's ???

Corkhill Family Tree

Hi, at first I was going to write and make a comment about your ancestor being killed by a runaway milk wagon! My grand-uncle was hit by a car with a drunk driver behind the wheel - in the year 1916 !!! He was 9 years old at the time, and lost an entire leg because of the accident. But, then, when I went back to read your message again, I noticed your last name. My great-grandmother was a British Home Child. Her name was Mary Corkhill (sp?). But, in the papers she was Mary Cornhill. Her full name was reportedly Mary Elizabeth Corkhill. She was shipped out of Liverpool in 1874 at Age 10, but the papers say she was 13. She either arrived in Halifax or Quebec, depending on which paper you look at. We think Halifax, because she married another British orphan who was shipped into Halifax the same month!

OOPS! I forgot to comment on your last name. On the info sheet for my great-grandmother, it said that she was among the group of orphans who were being supervised by the Reverend T. B. Stephenson.
Thank you for responding. ..... That's quite a statement you made! You were in Ireland, and then you were in Houston, and you've been sick in between ! That's a lot of traveling! I hope you're feeling better now!

Hi female Daryle, I wish I were a widow! I went through a terrible marriage, separation and divorce in the early 1970's, and it didn't stop until the late 1980's. I was in different "singles" organizations from 1977 to 1987, and I told many people that I would have preferred to have been a widow, considering all the TERRIBLE times with my EX. Everyone I said that to was SHOCKED, and refused to understand my side of the story. Of course, most of them turned out to be widows, and they had "their" stories. I am now with a great man, who I have had an on-again-off-again relationship with for 15 years. This time we are staying together. The kids are all grown. Have a great time on your camping trip. I was just explaining to my son's girlfriend yesterday, ... what a Mental-Health Day was! That's when you call in sick, and just vegg-out. And, the secret is to not tell anyone that you are home! I'm jealous; I'd love to own a motor home, and just be able to take off in any direction. I live in New England, and there are hundreds of places I'd like to visit. (Have already visits hundreds; want to see MORE.)

Corkhills from Co Mayo, Ireland

My great grandfather John Corkhill was born in Ballina, Co Mayo, Ireland in 1847. By 1869 he was living in Liverpool, England, married to a Martha from Dublin and with a daughter Louisa. By 1881 he and his family of five children were living in Widnes, Lancashire. His youngest child, Hannah Maria (my grandmother) was two years old.
Does anyone know of any Corkhills from Mayo? Is anyone related to John or his children Louisa (b.1869), John J (b.181871), William (b.1874), Martha (b.1876) or Hannah Maria )b. 1879)?

I have very little about, her only that she was born in Ireland and she and Edwin G. had four children, Archie, chancey, Ralph and Jesse. She was killed by a run-away milk wagon. No date. They lived in Lake county, Illinois.
