Death of Charles Corr from Cambridge, MA

Saturday June 11, 1910 Cambridge Chronicle PG 9 & 11

HOW YOUNG CORR MET HIS DEATH

Rindge Training School Crew Captain Could Not Swim - Suddenly and Mysteriously Sinks Out of Sight in Six Feet of Water Not Far From River Shore

The body of young Charles Corr, captain of the Rindge M.T.S. first crew, who drowned in the Concord river last week Friday night, was found early the next morning, by the boy's father and other members of the crew, who started at daylight to search for it. It appears that Corr could not swim and was the last of the boys to enter the water. He was clinging to a boat in which some of the boys were using and for some reason let go when no one was looking. He was seen struggling in the water by a boy on the float who had not gone in swimming, and this boy called to those in the boat that evidently
something was the matter with young Corr. Although Corr sank out of sight at once, his companions dove for him, and afterwards the river was dragged, but, darkness coming on, the task was given up until morning. The body was found only a short distance from shore, near where Corr was seen struggling in the water, and where the water was not over six feet deep.
The Rindge crews were guests of Coxswain Tuttle at his father's camp in West Billerica. The boys had intended to remain there over Sunday. Just before supper it was suggested that they go in swimming. All went in except one boy, who watched from the others from the float, and Corr, who remained behind chatting with Dr. Tuttle on the piazza of the bungalow. He finally left Dr. Tuttle and went down to the riverside and ventured in to teh water, contenting himself with clinging to the stern of the boat from which his companions were diving.
The funeral services were held from the home of young Corr's parents, 18 Maynard place, Monday morning. A mass of requiem followed at St. Peter's Church, on Concord avenue, at 9 o'clock, Rev. Mark E. Driscoll being the celebrant. The regular choir of the church chanted the Gregorian requiem . The services were attended by some 300 Rindge students, who formed with bared heads in the front of teh church while the casket was being taken in. Principal John W. Wood Jr., Miss Ellis, Miss Ward and Messrs. Conlin, Broderick, MacWhinnie and Sawyer, of the faculty of the Rindge school, also attended the services. The pallbearers were Ira Swart, Harold Hadley, and P.F. Sherburne, of the Rindge first crew; H.F. Oesting, Herbert Larner, Wallace Swart and Charles Cahill, of the second crew; Charles C. Hunter, manager of the crews, and four brothers of the deceased, Adrew E., James F., George T. and Hugh A. There were many beautiful floral tributes, including pieces from the Rindge senior class, the Rindge crew, and from the teachers of the school. Others who sent tributes were Prof. Rand of Harvard college, Amee Brothers where Corr had been a .........................boy for five years, Charles Apted, and relatives and friends. Interment was at St. Paul's cemetery, Arlington.
Corr is survived by a father and a mother and seven brothers and one sister. He was a very popular student at the Rindge school and was prominent in athletics, having captained the first crew during the past year and being also a full back on the football team. He was a senior and would have graduated with the class this year. He was planning to enter Harvard in the fall. He was accustomed to work in the summer vacation, and also in spare time during the school year, in order that he might help support himself. Corr was an unassuming, modest fellow who made a host of friends.
The class of 1910, R.M.T.S., has adopted the following resolutions on the death of young Corr:

Whereas, by the divine will of our most heavenly Father, the most beloved of all our classmates, Charles J. Corr, has suddenly been taken from us and
Whereas, during his life among us he has, by his exemplary character and rare ability, endeared himself to us, attaining marked prominence in every sphere of school activity so as to become our model of a perfect gentleman and scholar, be it
Resolved, that in his death we, his classmates of Rindge Manual Training school 1910, sustain a distinct and irreparable loss; and be it further
Resolved, that we extend our heartfelt sympathy to his bereaved family in their sorrow, and that a copy of these resolutions be forwarded to them and entered in to the class records.

W.H. REARDON, JR., President
C.V. TEAKLES, Secretary

My great-grandfather was William James Corr, born in 1860 in Dunmanway, Cork, Ireland (according to family records). I can find him on four U.S. censuses, because he came to the U.S. and married my great-grandmother, Anna Snider Brown. But I can find NOTHING on his Ireland relatives. It has been said that the name might have been changed from O'Corr or O'Corra, but I can't find anything under those names, either. I do not know what year he came to the U.S. or where he landed. I do know that he was a Methodist minister in Wisconsin. Any info would be most appreciated!

Thanks,
Liz (Corr) Olson

Hi,
I'm looking for any information on the family of Thomas Corr & Ellen (nee Mullan) who emigrated from Monaghan, Ireland to Glasgow around 1876. They had 5 children born in Ireland (Patrick, Mary, Anna, Thomas & James), and 4 born in Glasgow (John, Margaret, Peter & Denis). Ellen and daughter Margaret died in Glasgow & some of the family moved back to Ireland where Denis later married and had a family. I don't know what became of any of the others, but I believe some may have stayed in Scotland. The family also used the name Carr. I would be grateful for any information.

Corr - Anglo-Norman/Gaelic

There are two distinctly different Corr genealogies in Ireland. First you have the O'Corr/O'Corraidh/MacGiolla Corr. This is distictly a Gaelic variation of the name. Aparently descended from Gilla Corr of the Tyrone area of Ireland. And although there is two different origins the two names have been generalised into one common name.

The second is Corr/Corre/ and FitzCorr, the latter being now extinct in Ireland and occasionally only seen in the United States. We know of the origin of FitzCorr to be Irish due the Prefix of Fitz- which was a corruption of the Anglo/Cambro-Norman prefix Fils, meaning son of, which was only seen in Ireland, ie: FitzGerald, FitzMaurice, FitzSimmons etc. The only exception to that rule being Fitzpatrick, which is a gaelic name, the origins of which is McGiolla Padraig, but was changed by the english crown in the 17th century when the McGiolla Padraigs had to pay allegiance to the crown in order to keep their lands in Ossory. The same seems to have happened to FitzCorr but only on a reverse role basis, it would seem that the FitzCorrs' dropped the Fitz- on order to keep their lands. this is only a theory which has to be seriously considered. Then we have Corr (Norman). Records show that this Norman family arrived in Ireland at Waterford in 1171 with King Henry II of England who had recently seized control of Ireland for the purpose of "re-organising the church". They are mention throughout the Ormonde deeds, John and Philip Corr holding minor Baronies in Knocktopher, Co. Kilkenny. And Richard Corr was bishop of Lismore in the late 13th and early 14th century. Nothing much more is heard of this family until the 17th Century, when we hear of John Corr of Toberhany/Kilgrant in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary who had his lands forfeited following the siege of Clonmel by Oliver Cromwell in 1650. He and 141 retainers being given the choice, "To Hell or to Connaught". Unconfirmed reports say that John Corr sought refuge with the Butler family of Ormonde in Carrick Castle not far from Clonmel, and when Ormonde who had also forfeited lands was re-granted some of his property, he granted John lands near Callan in Co. Kilkenny because of his allegiance during the Confederate period of Ireland. The lands that John Corr received had previously been in the hands of the Comerford family near Grange, in the barony of Shillogher in Kilkenny. The Comerford family being another family of Norman descent who had also suffered during the cromwell confiscations.
Not long after John Corr has settled in Grange, came arrival of the Cuffe family, a new-english family of Protestant denomination who had aided Elizabeth I of England in her attempt to re-plant Ireland with new settlers. The Cuffe family were to become Earls of Desart, and begin a dynasty that was to last 300 years. Any chance that the Corr family had to regain the stature of their Old-English position was now gone. They are still in Cuffesgrange to this very day.
A branch of this family also held a lot of property in Callan in the 18th and 19th centuries. And were quite successful merchants in the town. But by the late 19th century and early 20th century they had left Callan to go to America, one of whom was descended Frank J. Corr mayor of Chicago.
The 20th century saw a huge migration of the family from Cuffesgrange. Some went to Australia, David Corr was killed fighting for the British in WW1, dying 10 before the end of the war, surviving Gallipoli, fighting in the hope that Britain would keep the promise of Home Rule for Ireland. Patrick Corr of Grove, moving to Foynes in Limerick, his son Arthur moving to Wisconsin, USA. Michael Corr, son of Michael Corr of Ballybur, moving to Midleton, Co.

I am trying to find information about my father Thomas Michael Corr Sr. He was born June 15th 1920. His father was John Corr and his mothers name I believe was Dehlia. There were brothers and posible sister(s). His brothers were John, Danny and Jack. there were others I believe. My fathers parents died when he was young and I was told that some aunts raised part of the kids while the boys were raised in the Saint Joesph Home for Boys in Minneapolis Minnesota. If anyone can help me out I would apprciate it so much.

NEW INFO on Corrs in Glasgow Scotland

Scotland.

Children were:

James, b. 1873, Londonderry Ireland
John, b. 1877, Ireland
Mary, b. 1882, Ireland
Henry, b. 1884, Ireland
Bernard, b. 1888, Ireland
Annie, b. 1893, Ireland
Patrick, date and place of birth unknown.

This family was in Glasgow by 1901, but James was not accounted for.

Henry married Agnes Madden in 1906, Glasgow, Scotland. Their children were Henry, James, John, Mary, Elizabeth, Bernard and Patrick and either an Agnes or Cathie.

(The John mentioned here is my grandfather, John Joseph Corr, b. 1914 Glasgow, married Helen Logan. Still living at 91 years old)

Bernard married Mary Kennedy Noble, presumably in Glasgow, and the only child I know of is James, b. 1916.

I notice there are a lot of references here to Bernard Corr...it seems a very much handed down name in my Corr family.

If anyone can see a connection, please reply!

Jacky

Corrs in Glasgow Scotland

I am trying to attain family information after my maternal grandfather, based only on family rememberances.

After much discussion, and reading about naming patterns, and realising that my mother's family were very strict in adhering to it, I have come to the following possible names and dates:

abt 1860: Henry(1) or James(1) Corr born
abt 1880: Marriage of Henry(1) or James(1) to unknown spouse.
abt 1884 John Corr (1)born.
abt 1909 John Corr (1) m. Agnes (maiden name unknown)
abt 1910 Henry (2) or James(2) born.
abt 1912 Henry (2) or James(2) born. (My mother cannot recall who was the elder)
1914 John Joseph Corr born.

(There were five more children in this family. I have names, but no approximate dates, although I can say the youngest, Patrick was likely to have been born in 1924 or so.)

1939-40 John Joseph m. Helen Logan.

I am looking for some verification of what I have suggested here. This Corr family was well settled in Glasgow Scotland, but I am not sure if or when they came from Ireland. I do not know if any immigrated to the US, but from my mother's recollections, it seems all but her Uncle James lived in Glasgow.

Thanks for any help in advance!
Dear John
My John CORR was the son of Edward CORR who I beleive was born in Ireland-n/k where circa 1788. He died on 25 Oct 1859 at High Felling Heworth UK -a chemical labourer age 74 and his son John was present at death. John seems to have had a brother Henry b 1836-John was born 1821-both in Ireland-again n/k where. I have no knowledge of an Ellen CORR but my information on this part of the family is very
sketchy. They do not seen to be on the 1841 cenus and Edward is at Heworth in 1851-age 63.Wife was Catherine-57.

Indiana Corr's

I am looking for the parents of Francis Marion (b:1830), William b: abt 1829), and Charles G. (b: abt 1826). All 3 were born in Indiana. According to the 1850 IN, Monroe Co. census, their mother's name was Jane. Both she and her husband were born in Ireland, according to later census. There may have been other children. Monroe Co. records use the last names Corr, Carr, and Coor throughout so that I can't tell if this is the same family. Both William and Francis ended up in Iowa and went by Corr. I haven't tracked Charles for sure yet. Frances maried Mary C. Arnold and William married Nancy Parr. I descend from F.M. and Mary's daughter Lyda who married Newman Dwight Leavitt. If this family sounds familiar and you'd like to exchange info, please contact me. Elsie

George Joseph Corr - Roscommon

I am trying, without much success, to trace my grandparents & beyond. My father was George,Joseph
b Keadue 1905. His father was George,Joseph married Teresa Daly 27th sept 1897 in Aghamore; Teresa d 1906.
They had 4 children; Teresa, Noel, Jack/John & my father George. I have no idea what happened to my
Grandfather, but my grandmother is buried in the cemetery at Knock. I believe my grandfather had a number
of siblings, one of whom was Phillip (b 1866? - 1925) married Teresa Loughna (my grandmother Teresa Daly's
Aunt) and resided in Edenpark, Knock. Phillip had a son George,Patrick (1895 - 1922) m Margaret,Bridget
Kenny (1895-1925, and daughters Kathleen & Teresa.
Another brother of Phillip & George, was John (1860-1913) m 1909 Jane Waldron (1865 - ?) again in Aghamore,
and they had/have a son John,George b 1912.
I believe that these Corr brothers are related to Charles Corr & Bridget Masterson from Gortletteragh, Leitrim
who raised their own Corr family in Corglas, Longford - although I cannot find any direct link/info between these
Corr brothers. Finally, there is a story that two other siblings, Joseph & Nora, ran off to America.
All my Corr family seem to name their first born son George, and their first born daughter Teresa or Nora.
I have come to a complete blank, and cannot find any record of my grandfather or his relations in Roscommon,
Longford, Leitrim or Mayo, and would greatly appreciate any info or assistance anyone can give me !!!

thanks,
Niall, George CORR
Can anyone help ?

Of interest to Ken Rice.
William Corr's mother's name was Thomson or Thompson from Scotland. She could have been a child of a British soldier serving in Ireland and more then likely a Catholic. Also, Frances DeCourtney died in child birth when Mary, my grandmother, was born. She came to the U.S. with her oldest brother, William, when she was around 12.
I have a picture of my grandmother with 2 of her brothers. I believe William and Walter.
George, who worked on the subway had a tooth pulled that day and went back to work where he died. Dave is my brother. Frank

Washington married ANN F.BUNNELL(daughter of Luther Anky Bunnell of Spotsylvania Co., Va.)sometime in the 1820s. The first child that I know of was George William Corr, born
1828.The couple lived in Caroline,Goochland, Powhatan Counties in Va. Washington died in 1874 in Powhwtan Va. where he owned the "Fine Creek Mills." I have alot of information to share on his family, but I would love to know this gentleman's origin.
Thank you, Louise lbbnemecek@aol.com

CORR (Elizabeth Ann)

I'm looking for information on Elizabeth Ann Corr married to James Toner. They had at least two children Mary Gertrude and Peter Joseph. They resided in Cambria County, Pa. My father was born in 1901 and they were his grandparents so they would probably be from the mid 1800's.
