Does anyone know the maiden name of Julia Corse. This is an ancestor of my wife. In her mothers family records they have her as Julia Osborne or Osborn. My mother in law insists that she had a sister named Maria who was married to Silas Howe of New York state, another ancestor of my wife. I have not been able to find any record of a Julia Osborn with a sister Maria anywhere. Another possibility for Maria is that she is a Holcomb

Re: Malcolm Sears CORSE

Just wanted to let you know that a diary written by Malcolm's wife (Nancy Holmes Corse) in 1858-1859 is available online at the Missouri State Archives. The link is:

http://library.umkc.edu/spec-col/corsediary/27.htm#start

A very interesting read. Nancy started the diary on her 18th birthday and continued a few months past her marriage to Malcolm.

I'm not related to any of this family, but found the diary so touching. Nancy's father had passed away in 1856 and his estate had not yet been settled. At the age of 18, Nancy’s position shifted from that of a daughter
under a father’s economic protection to hired help at the mercy of a brother. Nancy did eventually receive an equal third of her father's estate but not before it strained many of the family's relationships.

I hope you will find this helpful and as interesting as I did.

Sincerely,
Kathy Birdwell
kathy@GilbertFamilyChurch.org

Mary Corse, dau Thomas and Thankful Munn

In 1753, in Deerfield, Mary Corse was married to Thomas Train(e) "of Fort Massachusetts" (West Hoosac).
If the accounts written of the fort are correct, Thomas had property there but the depredations of Indians kept the settlement from progressing for several years. Four children are listed between 1759 and 1762 under Deerfield births.
Most accounts have Mary's death listed as 1808, as "Widow Mary Train", age 81.

The problem is that this same Thomas Train is said to have married in 1772, a Rachel Simonds of Fort Mass. who was more than 20 years younger, then had a child 1772 and died on the way back from Virginia in the same year. (This is from an account in The Hoosac Valley).

Does anyone have an alternate death date for Mary Corse Train as either they were divorced or THomas was a bigamist. (There don't seem to be any other/younger Trains listed in the Hoosac accounts)
Nancy Holmes Corse, VT, TX

A diary of Nancy Holmes Corse has been digitized and can be seen on the Missouri Digital Heritage Collection. From March 1858 to May 1859 Nancy Holmes kept a diary recounting her daily life. Many local neighbors are mentioned by name and a brief look at the 1850 census (name spelled Holms) does indeed reveal those very same persons mentioned in her diary. This is a wonderful piece of history for anyone researching the Holmes of Enosburg, VT.

http://library.umkc.edu/spec-col/corsediary/introduction.htm

"The Diary of Nancy Holmes Corse is housed in the Department of Special Collections, Miller Nichols Library, University of Missouri-Kansas City. The diary was discovered among the department’s holdings and used as the focal point of a research project. Each scanned page and its corresponding transcribed part were pasted side by side and saved as a single image file, enabling users to view both the original hand-written page as well as a typed text alternative. The complete diary transcription is also available online for keyword queries."

You certainly have my permission to copy my post regarding James Corse on the Ancestry.com forum. However, if you mean to copy my entire webpages at http://www.habitant.org/corse/ dealing with James Corse, then I would have to say that you may NOT copy them. You can of course refer to them, quote reasonable portions from them, and site them as any scholar would.

Whitlock is my maiden name and Ann Catlin Glann was my ggg grandmother - I think I put in enough g's. I am researching the Catlins and trying to connect them with my Whitlocks. Any Catlin information would be helpful as I have yet to find Ann's parents. Thank you
Thanks for your response. The following is the Whitlock Website where some of the information you provided is listed:
http://whitlock.castlewebs.net/wfa/index.htm If you look in the Whitlock31 chart this will give you the Whitlock information I have, in connection with the Baldwins, etc. The Whitlock09 chart is, I believe Hannah Whitlock's connection. Haven't had a chance to check yet. My brother Peter Whitlock is my ref. As to the Catlins. I am looking for Ann/Anna Catlin who was married to James/Jacobus Glann. She was supposedly born in Tioga, NY July 9, 1763. I have 6 children listed in the Glann family. I'm descended from their daughter Jane. So far I have been unable to find out who Ann's parents were. Any clues?

Hello Cousin! By all means, would love to see your descendant's file...I descend from captive Elizabeth Corse(Isabell Casse) and her 2nd husband Pierre Monet m. in 1730...I was in LaPrarrie again this summer and found a book at the Historical Museum on the history of the Monet family where it says that Pierre's father, Francois was one of the soldiers in on the Deerfield raid when Elizabeth was kidnapped...such irony! Looking forward to further exchange of info. TG

Hello Randi, Yes there are many Corse/Corss cousins out there. As I mentioned to mary, one major point regarding the origin of James Corse needs to be broadcast...Nobody knows his parents and he most likely came from Scotland somehow...I have been in touch with John DuLong for some time and was very pleased that he finally agreed to publish his work on trying to identify the origins of our elusive ancestor..Here is the site <http://habitant.org/corse/>

I descend from Elizabeth and 2nd husband Pierre Monet...TG

Hi Randy, Good to hear from you again...yes the desire to locate our ancestors can lead to many false starts and brick walls...the quest for parents of Jame Corse is a case in point...We will most likely never actually uncover his mother and father. John DuLong goes a long way to explain all of the possibilities. Lanark,Scotland area near Glassgow
is the most likely hometown. There were many many Corse/Corss families there in the 1500-1600s...and in view of the many battles between England and Scotland with the outcome sending hundreds of Scots off to Barbados or other islands to slave away on the plantations...it is just a matter of conjecture as to how our James ends up in MA. Many Catlin people came to MA from Barbados...James could have been a boy servant brought along to polish boots etc...

CORS/ CORSE family of CT and MA

This information might be of value to a Corse family member - and perhaps someone knows how my Avery/ Tiffany family connected to the Cors/ Corse family...

While looking at the Revolutionary War Pension File for Walter Tiffany, I found the statement by Walter's former wife, Sally (Avery) (Tiffany) Durkee. To prove her daughter's birth date (the daughter was named Sally Tiffany, my ggg-grandmother), Sally Durkee gave as evidence "a page from a Bible that had been in the family..."

The names on the page are:

Lecta (?) Cors Born December 14, 178_
Thomas Cors Born at Hebron October 23, 1784
Azariah Cors Born May 26, 1787
Sophia Corse Born November 8, 1789
Hyram (?) Corse Born April 5, 1792
Died April (11?), 1792
Mercy Corse Died at Hebron Oct. 20, 1792
was born at Springfield Sep. 6, 1757
Thomas Morgan Born Jan. (14?) 1793 at Hebron
Sally Tiffany Born March 3, 1785
_________ Born May 26, 1789 (which is the birth date of Sally Tiffany's brother, Avery Tiffany)

Possible clues:
Walter Tiffany's sister, Abi/ Abiah, married a Mr. Munn.
Walter Tiffany's mother may have been named Sarah Church.
Walter Tiffany's father was probably named Eleazer Tiffany.
Sally Avery and Walter Tiffany were both born in CT - but married in Lee, MA.
