Glad to help. My (free) Corsica genealogy website has some good surname sorting tips that you might find useful, too: http://corsicacorsica.homestead.com/PAGE2.html

Thanks so much for giving me the tips for looking for the key to my family's past. I was not aware of the Geneanet site until you told me about it. I see there is information on Rabotte like you suggested so I will spend some time seeing what I can find. One of his children called himself a Rabitaille so I will try a search under that name as well. It would be wonderful to solve this mystery which has been going on for a hundred and fifty years :)

Lots of RABATTE and a significant amount of RABOTTE turn up on Geneanet, so you may want to start there though at a glance it looks as if they may all be mainland France families. There is a surname ROBOTTI in later records in Marseille and Frontignan. Many Corsi emigrated to Marseille; possibly Frontignan, too. Lots of RIBETTI and RIBOTTI in the South of France, may have come from Corsica. Also, RUBETTI, currently found in Pietranera (many from Pietranera emigrated to North America), Corsica, but I'm not certain how far back the name goes. RUBETTI is also found in Marseille. Lots of REPETTI, REPPETI and REPETI still in Corsica.

You should try individual searches on Geneanet using the surnames RABATTE and RABOTTE with two given names (Paul and Jean Baptiste), and failing that, try the variances I listed above. Good luck with your search and write more if you get stuck.

Corsica Family??

I am trying to find out where my great grandfather came from in Corsica of if that is where he came from. His name was Jean Baptiste Rabotte born 1826-1827 but he changed his name to John Booth when he came to Canada in 1853. He settled in Penetanguishene and married Harriet Dusome and worked at the mill and raised a large family. Any information would be much appreciated. He was Roman Catholic and was married in St Anne's and listed Paul Rabotte and Elisabeth LaFleur as his parents.
