Thank you for responding to these messages, Steve!

I have not pulled out my research for quite some time either, but I do know that I was looking for a solid piece of evidence to tie my family research to the Coryell family. When researching online, one researcher made this tie and connected my family tree with the multitude of information on the Coryell's. However, I'm suspicious of this tie... mainly because up until this my family has been extrememly low key. I'll pull out my information again and see if I can locate where I wrote which key documents would show whether or not this other researcher's asumptions were accurate or not.

Thanks again and I hope to be in contact with you again soon!

It's a pretty cool family history. I was recently back in my hometown and showed my son Coryell's Ferry (it is back in operation again after many years of the river being too low to operate), Coryell street and Coryell Bridge across the river in Lambertville. My son and I had our photos taken next to the Ferry sign and street sign. My father, Joseph Robert Coryell, 78, live about 20 miles from there now.

Coryell's were also pallbearers at George Washington's funeral. I have quite a bit of documentation about the family tree.

Steve Coryell

I have quite a bit of information about John Emanuel Coryell and the Coryell's from that area. In fact, I am a Coryell and lived in Bucks County for about 23 years. Most of that time was in New Hope (formerly Coryell's Ferry). Much of my family still lives in the area but I am now in the Midwest. I have all the research stored in a closet but would be willing to pull it out if you need specific information.

Steve Coryell

Seeking information on Michael Coryell b. abt. 1800 d. abt. 1819. Buried in the Town of Veteran, which was in Tioga Co., N.Y. at the time of his death; now it is in Chemung Co., N. Y. There is a Abraham Coryell & family living in Catherine, Tioga Co., N.Y. which is the same general area, in the 1810 census. One son is Michael's age. The Coryell's may be some of the folks buried in a cemetery which disappeared long ago. Does anyone have a Michael fitting this age and in this area? Thank you.

Hi, My greatgrandmother was a sister of Peter's wife, Sarah Jane. I don't know the parents of Peter, but the geneology report I have lists them as unknown, but Peter was born 3-20-1824 in Seneca, NY, the second son. The unknown mother was born in NY. I have a picture and info on his brother,Dewitt Clinton Coryell and his family. I also have a picture of Peter and Sarah Jane. Dewitt was born about 1824 in NY and married a Mary H. Stebbins on 9-20-1843. He died 2-6-1895 in Deming,Grant (Luna)Co.NM. Mary was born 9-20-1843 in Scioto Co.,Ohio the same place Sarah Jane was born. Mary died 12-30-1900 in Corsicana, TX. My picture shows 3 children,W. Russell S.,Lula, and Theophilius Fleetwood. The picture was taken in SanIntonio, TX It lists 5 other children in my info. I think Lulu must have been Imogene E. Peter had 10 children I think--Charles Q was a twin of Emma. Does any of this help? Marilyn Ask (Reed)

Michael Noble Coryell was the only son of Noble Burr Coryell and Margie Lou Miller. "On February 4th 1967 Memorialization Ceremonies were held at the helicopter installation of Ben Me Thuot City Airfield, Vietnam designating this particular compound as Camp Coryell in honor of Warrant Officer Michael N. Coryell helicopter pilot killed on October 30, 1966. A sign welcoming personnel to Camp Coryell was unveiled together with a memorialization placque. Coryell flew critical items on several re-supplimissions to infantry units that were engaged by a large hostile force in an area of heavily wooded jungle, near Plei Dijereng, Vietnam. On the final mission Coryell's aircraft received intense fire and crashed into a mountain. Coryell was awarded posthumously The Distinguished Flying Cross Air Medal with 18 oak leaf clusters, The Purple Heart, Vietnamese Military Merit Medal and the Vietnamese Gallantry Cross with Palm."

The Mystery of James Coryell, Falls Co. Texas

Found this article- it has valuable information for those seeking Coryell ancestors. (I have no relation to this surname)

FALLS COUNTY (February 9, 2011)—Experts from the Smithsonian institution will spend Thursday and Friday taking DNA samples from remains found in a grave in a slave cemetery in Falls County that’s believed to be the final resting place of early Texas Ranger and Central Texas pioneer James Coryell.
This week, Texas Historical Commission archaeologists excavated the grave to unearth the remains from which the DNA samples will be taken.
They’ll be compared to DNA samples from some of Coryell’s collateral relatives, who were found living outside of Texas.
The commission hopes the remains will also shed some light on how Coryell died.
A ranch hand discovered the grave, which is topped by a distinctive cluster of rocks, about 10 months ago.
According to a 1936 account, Coryell’s grave collapsed and slaves from a nearby plantation, who buried their dead nearby, placed the rocks to keep the pioneer settler’s spirit at rest.
Coryell, for whom Coryell County is named, made his way to Texas from his native Ohio and in 1831 joined an expedition to search for silver mines in the San Saba region, after which he made his home with a family that had settled near Marlin.
Four years later, in 1835, he explored the Leon River basin and laid claim to nearly 1,200 acres of land at the junction of the river and Coryell Creek.
In the spring and summer of 1836, he served with Sterling C. Robertson’s ranging company and in the fall he joined Capt. Thomas H. Barron’s company.
According to most accounts, he was killed in an Indian ambush in May 1837 as he and three companions raided a bee tree for honey a short distance from their camp near the Falls on the Brazos in Falls County.
He was struck by arrows and scalped, but it’s not clear which caused his death.
His final resting place, however, remained a mystery until the discovery of the grave last year.

http://www.kwtx.com/home/headlines/DNA_Could_Solve_170-Year-...
I have looked at his info on federal census. His daughter later is listed as Helen Scott, so I do not know if that is my line. It has been a stumper, plus the journey to Illinois from New York.
I know her name on her funeral program listed her name as Helen M. Coryell with no mention of Scott. Just looking for more confirming information.
THanks for the reply
Nona

Helen M. Coryelle of Tioga, New York, married Wiliam Henry Bryson 5 Jul 1867 in Whiteside Co, Ill.
Family records have Helen's birth year 1841. The 1850 Federal Census for Tioga New York list her parents as V.M. Corelle, born 1800 and Rebecca E., born 1807, and her siblings Jane E [b1834], William P [b1838], Frances A [b1840], Mary B [[b1843], Clamantha A [b1845], and Elizabeth J [b1847].
I have been up against this brick wall for a long, long time. I have information that a brother of William Henry Bryson, Jacob, married Anna Coryelle on 10 Jul 1858.
I have not been able to validate any ancestry for V.M. Coryelle and I have been working on this for many years [hit and miss].
Any and all help is greatly appreciated/I am on ancestry under this user name and have a public tree.

Hi,

I have a brick wall with my Coryell Family. My 3rd Great Grandfather is George Coryell born abt 1825, born in New York. (the little information I have on him is Census Records, which we all know is not necessarily accurate. He married a Keziah Randall before 1847. I have that they had 5 children between them. I have never been able to find parents for him, or even a death date. Keziah remarried by 1860. The 1850's Census has them living in Michigan with two of their children. Since you appear to have so much information and I did notice another George Coryell on your information, I was hoping you might be able to help with this.

Thank you.
Richard F. Coryell's father was a Coddington

Richard F. Coryell (1794-1845) and Frances Spencer (1793-1851) of Mt. Horeb, Warren Township, Somerset County, NJ produced at least thirteen children, twelve of whom left descendants. For decades Richard has been a genealogical brick wall. No one has been able to prove who his parents were. Now, the combination of traditional paper research and DNA science is shedding light on this old family mystery.

Traditional paper research proves Richard and his family associated closely with several members of the Coddington family. All of these Coddington associates descend from Isaac Coddington (1729-1776) and they lived in the Mt. Horeb, Warren Township area. Isaac is a direct descendant of Stockdale Coddington (1569-1650), who emigrated to Boston around 1640.

Recently, two direct descendants of Richard F. Coryell completed y-chromosome DNA testing. One man is descended from Richard's son John Coriell (1815-1863). The other is descended from Richard's son Jeremiah G. Coryell (1837-1894). The result: Mr. Coriell matched Mr. Coryell on 45 out of 45 markers.

Conclusions:

1. Mr. Coriell and Mr. Coryell share a common ancestor (Richard).
2. Both of their documented lines are valid (i.e., no adoptions or other false paternities occurred in either line all the way back to Richard).
3. Richard's haplotype is known for 45 markers.
4. Richard's haplogroup is I1 confirmed (2008 nomenclature).

Richard's known haplotype was then compared to the known haplotype of Abraham Coryell (see my post from earlier today; Abraham is believed to be progenitor of the Coryell family in the USA). The result: Richard matched Abraham on 9 out of 28 markers.

Conclusion: Richard F. Coryell and Abraham Coryell are not biologically related.

Some time ago the Coddington DNA Project established the haplotype of Stockdale Coddington for 43 markers. When Richard's known haplotype is compared to Stockdale's, the result is a 36/36 match.

So, given the "brick wall" and Richard's close association with the Coddington family, the implications of the DNA results are obvious: Richard's biological father was a Coddington.

Additional DNA testing further supports this conclusion. The Jeremiah G. Coryell descendant and his father currently match the administrator of the Coddington DNA Project on 74 out of 76 markers.

From the historical records found to date, it seems likely that Richard was adopted into a Coryell family and raised as a Coryell. All male Coryell descendants of Richard F. Coryell living today--barring adoption or other non-paternal event along their direct lines to Richard--have a Coddington haplotype. Including myself! We are the "Coddington Coryells."

This investigation is ongoing and may never produce indisputable proof about the identities of Richard's biological and adopted fathers, but my prime candidates are: John Coddington (1761-1844) (a.k.a. "Corrington") and David A. Coryell (1758-1835).

The thirteen known children for Richard F. Coryell and Frances Spencer are:

Sarah Ann Coryell (m. Aaron Coddington)
John Coriell (m. Elizabeth Bush)
Mary Jane Coriell (m. John Wadsworth)
Eliza H. Coryell (m. George D. Boice and Robert McAdams)
Randolph Coriell (m. Mary Jane Hoaglund)
Charlotte Coriell (m. Matthias Giddes)
Elias Coryell (m. Catherine Ann Bush)
Phebe Coryell (m. David Lincoln)
Isaiah Coriell (m. Ann Van Winkle)
Eunice Coryell (m. William Mundy)
Almeda F. Coryell (m. John C. Myers and William Lincoln)
Jeremiah G. Coryell (m. Susan M. Jimerson)
George B. Coryell (m. Mary Ann McNear and Mary Hudson)

Interested persons are invited to reply to this post or to contact me directly. They are also encouraged to contact Jonathan of the Coddington DNA Project at coddgenealogy@gmail.com.

DNA proves Emanuel and David Coryell were related

Noted Coryell family genealogists Ingham Coryell, N. Burr Coryell, and Dallas Lee Coryell concluded that the progenitor of the Coryell family in the USA is one Abraham Coryell, whose earliest documented appearance occurred in 1702 when he registered his cattle mark in Middlesex County, NJ. Abraham is supposed to have had four sons: Emanuel (d. 1749), David (1704-1779), Abraham Jr., and Samuel (d. 1760). N. Burr Coryell proposed that it should be the goal of every Coryell to tie into one of these four lines.

The best piece of traditional paper documentation in support of these relationships is the will of Samuel Coryell, which indicates Samuel and David were brothers. The rest of the conclusion--that Emanuel and Abraham Jr. were also their brothers and that Abraham Sr. was father of all four--is the best educated guess of Ingham Coryell, largely based on the geographic proximities of these men and onomastics. Today most Coryells accept the relationships as "fact."

Were the four men really brothers? Was Abraham really their father?

Recently, direct descendants of Emanuel and David completed 37 marker y-chromosome DNA tests with Family Tree DNA. The result: Mr. Coryell matched Mr. Coriell on 35 out of 37 markers. They differed at markers CDYa and CDYb, which are known to have fast rates of mutation.

Conclusions:

1. Mr. Coryell and Mr. Coriell share a common ancestor.
2. Both of their documented lines are valid (i.e., no adoptions or other false paternities occurred in either line all the way back to the common ancestor).
3. The claim that Emanuel and David were brothers is supported by DNA science.
4. The haplotype of the common ancestor is known for 35 markers.
5. Abraham Coryell is the only man ever proposed to be the father of Emanuel and David. These tests provided no reason to doubt that conclusion.
6. The haplogroup of the common ancestor--as defined by the 2008 nomenclature of Family Tree DNA--is predicted to be E1b1b1. An additional test will be required to confirm that.

Thus, for the first time ever, we know something definite about the DNA of Abraham Coryell. What next?

1. Coryell male descendants of Samuel and Abraham Jr. are needed to test. (Are there any known descendants of Abraham Jr.? Or, has that line died out?). Predicted result: they will match Emanuel/David.

2. Any Coryell male who can't connect with progenitor Abraham through traditional paper documentation is encouraged to test. If you match the Emanuel/David results, then you are genetically related to them. If you don't match, an adoption or other false paternity likely occurred in your line. You now have the opportunity to learn something definite about your Coryell genealogy.
Lindsley, could you please send to me, also, the pdf file you sent to Ralph. Lucy's father was a brother to John. John's son, William S., had a son, Angevine S. who married my great-great aunt Rosene Hults. Would love to hear from you.

Bruce
keukakid16522@pngusa.net

I would be interested in pictures of Lucy, her husband and children. My Coryell information is based upon Dallas Coryell's publication - "The Coryells, An American family and 300 years of its history." I am sending to your (year 2000) email address a pdf file that includes Lucy Coryell and her ancestors. Lucy is my 1st cousin 4 times removed. Thank you for your time and attention.

Hi Ralph,

There are other Coryell researchers out there that are much more knowledgeable than I, and may respond. In the mean time I'm sending you some of what I have for you to look over.

1. I have Henry born abt. 1818, in VT., and no information on parents, siblings, etc.
2. I have Lucy P.(Lucia) born 26 Sep., 1824, NY - probably Steuben County.
3. Her parents were Andrew I. and Esther Carpenter Coryell. Andrew was born in NJ, Esther in MA. They moved to MI in 1826. That would make Lucy about age 2. So I would think she married in MI, or somplace other than NY.
4. I have Andrew's children, his siblings, and his family bacl another 2-3 generations.

You can contact me directly if you wish.

Bruce
keukakid16522@pngusa.net

Coryell family

My great-grandmother, Lucia Coryell, married Henry B. Day in New York or Michigan. Lucia was born in 1823, in New York. Henry was born in 1817, in New York. They and possibly their parents moved to Michigan before 1843. Fron census reports Lucia parents were born in New York. Henry's father was born in New York, but his mother was born in Holland. I have been unable to determine the names of their parents, siblings, or any of their ancestors. Could anyone give me a name or a location to pinpoint my New York searching. I have a lot of data on their descendants. Thanks Ralph Day
