I know I said I would give you some info of our family and I have not done that. Melvina Cota Swille is my grandmother and Laura, who married Fred Derocher is Melvina & Peter Swille's daughter---and so is Rose Swille Derocher, married to your Gggrandfather Eugene A. Derocher (my dad) is Melvina's daughter. I have a picture of Melvina's Cota-
Swille's mother and father. I will bring all this info with me when I come to Wisconsin for the summer and we'll have to get together. I have much more info of the Derocher side of the family. I do have a pic of all of Peter & Melvina's children. Aunt Jackie (your Grandfather's sister) P.S. I don't have the info listed about the Cota's--this is interesting!

She married Ramon Portillo in Los Angeles, CA and had my father, Charles Frederick Portillo. Do you have any information about the older Cotas?

My mother is Consuelo Savin Cota who's family is from La Paz, Baja California. Family names in her tree are Cota, Savin, De Leon, Verdugo, Talamantez, Sandoval, Marquez, Dominguez to name a few. We were just looking at a La Paz book of family pictures. Maria Ester Verdugo, La Paz, 1924 has a photograph. Any relation to you?

I can be reached on: connie.m.gunther@gmail.com

I am not sure if we are looking for the same person or not. I am looking for a Nicolasa Cota who had one child, a daughter, named Custodia Lopez with Ignacio Lopez. The child was born in 1861 and the only known biological child. There were also 2 possibly adopted children, Fecunda and Antonio M. but they both caried the Cota name and not Lopez (whom I can find no marriage for and cannot find out where she was before that. I may have found her on the 1852 California state census in Los Angeles, but I am not sure. Would love to share info.

I know about Andres(1700-1765)his wife Angela de Leon(1705-1762)and the Cota de Leon children Roque Jacinto(1724-1798), Pablo Antonio(1732-1800), Andres(1725 or 39- 1769), Pedro Cayetano(1741-?) Cristobal(1743-?),and Maria(1745-1768) What I'm trying to put together is this family with a marriage certificate that we have of Fermin Cota and Luciana Verdugo on October 16, 1812 in San Antonio, Baja California. ?Who are Fermins Parents? is there other children in tha Cota de Leon marriage? I have every one from 1812 on to now, but I cant' place Fermins or Lucianas Parents. I know that the Cota boys married 3 of the Verdugo Girls, can you enlighten me?

Thanks you Ann

My husband is a direct descendant of Roque Vicente Cota (1724-1798) from El Presidio de El Fuerte, Sinaloa, Nueva Espana, married Juana Verdugo. Was a soldier at the San Gabriel Mission and was one of four soldiers who escorted the pobladores to Los Angeles. I am having a hard time trying to find out how he came to San Gabriel. He was at Mission San Gabriel before the De Anza Expedition of 1775-1776 came through there. I would like to know when he arrived in California and on what Spanish Expedition he was on. Can anyone help me?

Hi, I'm looking for my Grandmother and my Mother's family. My Grandmother was born in El Fuerte cerca 1880, her name: JUANA FLORENTINA VALENZUELA, cerca 1904 she married my Grandfather: RAFAEL O MANUEL ALVARADO (he later changed his surname to: MARTINEZ OR MANRIQUEZ), from that marriage they had 2 children in LOS MOCHIS,SIN, my Mother: MARIA HERIBERTA ALVARADO (paterno surname) in the 1930 Mexican census there is a MARIA GALVAN b-1905, I believe she is my Mother. My Grandmother Juana apparently died in Los Mochis cerca 1908 (I'm not sure if that is correct, she might have separated or divorced my Grandfather) my Grandfather remarried to: ROSENDA ALGONDA FLORES, the Valenzuela family could not accept this marriage so my Mother and her brother: JUAN GALVAN ALVARADO, also born in Los Mochis cerca 1906 moved to MILPITAS OR EL QUEMADO DE MAZATLAN,SIN, with my Grandfather and their step-mother, cerca 1955 is the last contact we had from them. My Mother immigrated to the USA cerca 1917-20, she married my Dad cerca 1925, Samuel Romero of Santa Fe,New Mexico, she died in San Juan Capistrano using the name ERIBERTA ALVARADO ROMERO (not her Mexican name) the following surnames belong to her family: COTA, VALENZUELA, GALVAN, GALAVIZ, CLIQUERI AND BRIONES. My Great-Grandmother was named CATARINA and she also was from El Fuerte, not sure if her surname was COTA. If you have any of the above in your records, please advise me. I only want to notify our Mexican relative of my Mother's death. Thanks and have a good day. Ed Romero Stanton,Ca

I know this is an old post but I just came across it and wanted to chime in. My father is Danny Lyle Cota and my name is Lyle Cota. I've always been told the name came from his uncle Lute Lyle Cota. My dads father's name was Eugene Cota and my dad was born in southern Indiana (I think Vincennes). They moved around and settled in Brownsburg IN just west of Indianapolis. I'm now living in Arizona but the rest of my family is in Indiana.

Your grandmother Lorenza was born in a town call "La Cueva de Cota" she was born on 8/14/1893 and babtized on 9/1893 in Sinaloa De Leyva in the church San Felipe y Santiago. You know her parents were Margarito and Ines. Well FYI your Great Great Grandparents are Agapito Cota & Maria Micaela Perea on Margaritos side. Ines Sotos parents were Jesus Araujo y Teodora Soto. I found this info while looking for my ancestors and I remembered these names :) I thought this some valueable info to share with you.

Wow, I haven't heard from anybody in so long. I've been really busy so I have not been into my research so much lately. I am looking for any information or photos that any relative would like to share. I am trying to piece together as much of the family as possible. Sophia had many siblings so it will be a task. I would really like to find out if anyone has birth records or knows more about her parents. It's difficult now because on both the Bullock & Cota sides I stopped at the point in which I was finding births in Canada. So any information you would like to share would be fantastic; especially if you have any family photos. Thank you for getting in touch with me.
Hello fellow Cota's. I live in Whittier Ca. My mothers maiden names are Norzagaray Cota. I have gone to Mx all my life to current. There is a small town "if you can even call it that" near Sinaloa de Leyva. It is called El Portugues de Norzagaray. I have my family tree down to my GGGrandfather Rodrigo Norzagaray who was married to Petra Cota. One of their children was Trinidad Norzagaray "my Great Grandfather". He married Elodia Cota. I also know Elodia Cota's father was Donacino Cota. He was probably born around 1870's. What I could say is that in that town "El Portugues de Norzagary" their is still alot of elders living their.
