Greetings. I am Ken Boggs Jr., son of Ken Boggs Sr who was married to Martha Virginia Hale, daughter of Billy Hale and Martha Nancy Cottle, who was daughter of Solomon Mills Cottle Sr, -- and you likely know the rest.

I am new to chasing genealogy but having fun. I'd like to know more about the descendants of John Jennings Cottle for the only one I have specifics about is John Ebenezer Jefferson Cottle.

Hope the new 2012 year is treating you well.

Ken

Hello

I found your message when I searched for Christiana Cottle, who was my 4th great grandmother. I have her date of birth as 1784 (so assume 1863 was a typo) and that she was married to William Wills b 1783 and she had a daughter called Elizabeth Wills b 1812 d 1870, who is my ancestor.

I know your message was posted a long time ago, but wondered if you had found any further information since then? I am afraid I have not found her parents.

Kind regards

Miranda

Re: Cottle family from Somerset England

It's some time since the reply on 27-1-2005 was posted.
However I can confirm that SouthWest England is an area where many of my ancestors came from, so can be justly described as a 'hotbed'. I live near that area, & always feel a special affinity with the area when I am there. The name Cottle probably meant its owner was a 'cottager', or owned property originally. Our family was very strong in Cornwall, Devonshire, & Somerset. After a mention from my mother, during a later visit to Cornwall, we spent time searching the churchyard in Launceston. There we found two family graves, one of which contained bodies of two parents, plus four infants who died between 1828-1836. Unfortunately on a later visit one of the gravestones had been moved, & was propped-up against a nearby wall. (I believe this was from the parents grave). My son has done research, & believes that branch may have earlier come from the Okehampton area. My grandparents later moved to Yeovil,Somerset, which was my grandmothers home town & I still have relatives there,(Haywards not Cottles)! Later they moved to London, due to his employment, but spent their remaining years near Epsom,Surrey, where both died. My grandfather, & father were either coachbuilders,/& or signwriters by occupation. In those days children often followed in their parents employment. Regretfully, I have no information confirming that any of my ancestors emigrated from this country
I know this was posted 9 years ago, but I have information on this! My grandmother was born in Richmond, Cache, UT. Her name was Violet Lucille Gridley. Her mother's name was Elizabeth Cottle born in 1873, Bristol England. Her father was Henry Cottle born in 1830 and her mother was Elizabeth Wright born in 1830. Henry (I didn't know about the first name being William) Cottle's father was George Cottle and mother was Mary. Abraham Cottle must be Elizabeth's brother? The Cottles from UT in my family ended up in Washington State. I haven't heard of the Weeks name, let me know if you have any leads on that.

Thanks,

Karen
kwachter at verizon dot net

I also have that he was from Landford or Landsford England. I have been to England, the Bath/Bristol area, and searched church records buy could find no more info. They were apparently not Church of England members, which is why they emigrated--for religious freedom.

There is a George Washington Cottle in my line from Gonzales Texas. His sister married a greatgrandfather of mine, Thomas Jackson. Both George Cottle and Thomas Jackson died at the Alamo on March 6, 1836. George W. was the son of Jonathan and Margaret Cottle of Missouri and moved to DeWitt"s Colony, Texas in 1829. George married Nancy Curtis Oliver on Jan. 4, 1835. They had one daughter, Melvina. The information is from records at the Alamo and a book called Alamo Defenders.

South Western Local
Shullsburg, Wisconsin
April 6, 1860

In Shullsburgh, March 30, 1860, of Consumption, MARTIAL COTTLE, aged 56 years.
In the death of Mr. Cottle, our community has to mourn the loss of one of its most estimable citizens, and his family, a fond husband, and a kind indulgent father. He was a native of Woodstock, Vermont, and one of the Pioneers of this country. He emigrated to Wisconsin, in 1822, from which he went to Missouri, but after a few years returned, and has been a resident of the Mining District for the last 20 years, and of Shullsburgh for fifteen. Benevolenec, integrity, and a strict sense of justice, were among the leading traits of his character. He was universally esteemed.

I have been researching my Cottle line with the intent of applying for membership in the General Society of Mayflower Descendants. The road has been rather easy up to this final piece. As you may imagine the documentation needs to be very solid.
The documentation relating Sylvanus & Relief (Farnsworth) Cottle, to their son Warren Cottle is my weak link. There are many books, and genealogies that speak to the relationship, but none that site references such as birth, probate, Bible, or other such documents that I have found.

Warren Cottle

b.
Hi Pete
I think I know the Stephen you are referring to, but unfortunately there seem to be two or three Stephen Lapthornes born around this period. One day I will manage to get sight of the marriage to Jane Cottle to see if it mentions the father of Stephen (although it might not).
All I know is that Stephen was a coastguard, his son Stephen was a mariner who settled in Australia, and various other members of his family and the Cottles were also mariners or worked at the naval dockyards.
I have nothing on George or Susanna except their names as parents of Jane and her sisters.
Very frustrating!
Phyllis

I do not have William E Cottle in my line, that I know of, however the fact that you are asking about Cottles and your last name is Powell is what interests me. My great great grandfather was William W Cottle born about 1868 in Massachusetts. He married a Sarah Jane Powell born 1872 in Wisconsin. They resided in Massachusetts.

They had at least 3 daughters: Jane/Jenny (1799); Betsey (1802) and Mary Ann (1805).

My ancestor is Jane, who married Stephen Lapthorn in Devon in 1817.

If anyone has any further information or guidance, I would be grateful

Phyllis

Re: Richard Cottle Family of Australia

on NSW BMD, there is a William Cottle married in 1891 to Eliza Croudace in Ashfield.NSW
A John T Cottle married a Maude RF Ford in 1905 at Drake NSW. A John A Cottle married a Mary L Braurer in 1906 at Tenterfield NSW. A John WH Cottle married a Eliza A Filby in Wollongong NSW in 1906.
Go to: www.bdm.nsw.gov.au and follow the family search links Its free to search but you have to pay for the certificates.
I suggest you just put in the surname and see what comes up, you have to put in the years and you can do it by 10 year searches. Births only go to 1905, deaths and marriages go to 1945.
You can join the Australian search boards on http://groups.msn./NSWFamilies - these are free to join and have sites all over Australia.
Happy hunting,
Val -Australia

Re: Julia Cottle of Camden County, Georgia

Hi there!

I have a Julia Simpson Cottle and a William (possibly William M.) Cottle as being buried, unmarked, in Zion Cemetery in Camden County, Georgia. I do not have any dates for them but anywhere from 1850s to 1950s would be a guess.

There are many Cottles in Camden, but this is the only Julia I know of. Is she possibly related or the same as your Julia? I have more Cottle burial information on my web site (URL below).

I would very much like to know more about her. I'm not related, but I do keep up with the cemetery surveys and would like to at least have their dates and whether or not they are truly buried in Zion Cemetery.

Take care,

Tara Fields
The Crypt
- Free Genealogy and History Web Site on Camden and Charlton Counties, Georgia
http://www.camdencounty.org
List Owner: Camden-L

Re: James L. Cottle's ancestors to NC from wherever?

Hi Ricky,

Through a Jim Simpson, I've been given information that connects a Barbara BALCOM FULK (deceased and buried in Pilot Mountain, NC) to her parents Royal Hunt BALCOM and her mother Carrie COTTLE. The census records he sent were from CA and WY and they indicate Barbara was born in WY and her father born in OH and mother in PA.

Barbara's paternal grandparents were from RI (grandfather) and OH (grandmother) and her maternal grandparents were from England (grandfather) and OH (grandmother).

Do you have any connections to them? The CA 1930 census shows Royal Hunt BALCOM as a Clergyman.

My interest in them is via a marriage to a FULK, niece of Barbara Balcom FULK.

Bob Carter
Greensboro, NC
