Hazel Cotts babysat my sister and I from about 1954-1958. She and her husband, George, lived on a farm NW of Bartlesville, Oklahoma. We called her "Mimi".
I remember that she had a daughter living in Duncan, Ok, with two grandsons that i think were named "Skip" and "Tommy".
I called her in 1989 when my son was born.
I loved her and George very much.

Conrad Cotts

Margaret, This is some great information! I'd love to get into contact with the person who gave you the info on Conrad Cotts his family. I've suspected he is probably the father of my Mary Ann Cotts, since she was born in 1811 in VA(WV?) about the time he opened his coal operation there. I'd read about him and some of his family in various publications. I would really like to definitely link him to my Cotts family.
You mentioned two daughters - does your contact have the names of either of these girls?
The naming patterns of the family suggest a probable relationship. Abner Mary Ann Cotts Black's first son was named George, (possibly after her grandfather?), and other of their children have the same names of some of his sons. I didn't have Nathan in my list of his children, but I had all the other names you mentioned, plus a son named Henry. Also, according to census records, they lived either next door to each other in Wheeling or very close by.
I had never heard the name of Conrad's parents and would like to know where that info came from too.
My email address is bago09@aol.com. Please contact me.

Re: Conrad Cotts

One of Conrad Cotts' daughters was Rosanna Cotts (1797 - 1863). She married Hugh Nichols in 1817. They had one child, a son, George Washington Nichols (1818-1902). Rosanna was my ggg grandmother. I was born and raised in Wheeling and have visited Mt. Wood Cemetery many times.

Hugh Nichols (1788 - 1863) was a principal investor in Wheeling's first iron mill, the Old Top Mill. He and Conrad Cotts, who was the first mining engineer in the Ohio Valley, obviously had a lot of common interests in their businesses. I don't know as much as I would like to about the Cotts.

This much I know, that Conrad's wife was Harriet. If he was married to a woman named Susan, then he was married more than once. Rosanna's death certificate names her parents as Conrad and Harriet.

Do let me hear from you!

Hi Margaret,

I am really sorry this took so long. I really should look at my messages more often. I don't have a whole lot of info right now. I belive John is connected with Conrad Cotts. My information on Conrad was lost during a recent move. I do remember that his family was pretty big. Most of his family is buried at Mt. Wood cemetary. There are about 26 Cotts' buried there. I have sent a letter to the cemetary's address to see if they will help. I might also suggest that you contact Brenda Dunn at bdunn@multipro.com. She is also researching John and Elizabeth Cotts. Please keep me in the loop if anything turns up. I would be happy to give you the info I have but this space is kinda small. Would you be willing to respond with your e-mail address? Mine is bcotts@theriver.com.

Bruce

I have just been contacted with someone that has told me that the Catzs also had a spelling of Cotts. My family comes from Peter Catzs. According to my information they are from Sigel, Jefferson County, PA and that he was an elder in the Mount Tabor Church. I have been to the Cemetery and seen the head stones they do say CATZS. I have also seen the records that state that the name was changed when Peter took over the books of the church.
