Hi...hoping to find Ellen Honora (or maybe Sarah) Coughlin, born September 1844 in Morristown, NJ. She marries in NJ in the 1875-1877 period to Thomas McGrath and they make a permanent residence in Rockford, IL. They were the parents of 8 children (although the last 2 cannot be found in census records, so they may have died at birth/infancy).

Any one out there make a connection?

I've nailed down the specifics of my own great grandmother, Johanna Coughlin (Hickey married name). She had McMahon and McNamara relatives in Ballyvannan.

Coughlins (aka Conklins) of Essex and Morris Counties, New Jersey

I have been attempting to identify the parents of my ancestor, Elias Conklin (c. 1808 - 1870), who worked as a shoemaker from around 1835 to the mid- to late-1850's in Newark, New Jersey. In the process of working on this project, I discovered that several Newark Conklins, who had been born in New Jersey in the late-eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, also used the "Coughlin" surname sometimes. The 1851/52 city directory for Newark provides some good examples, as follows:

George Conklin (mason), located at 5 Cottage Street, is also listed in the directory as George Coughlin (mason), located at 5 Cottage Street;
Daniel Conklin (blacksmith), and his son, Daniel F. Conklin (carpenter), residing at 31 South Essex, also appear as Daniel Coughlin (blacksmith), and his son, Daniel F. Coughlin (carpenter), residing at 31 South Essex.

Elias and Daniel came to Newark by way of Elizabeth, New Jersey. I suspect that my ancestor, as well as Daniel Conklin and a few other Conklins who were living in Newark in the first half of the 19th century, may be related to the Conklins who lived in the Pompton Plains vicinity in Morris County, New Jersey, at the end of the 18th century. Elias Conklin married Mary Ann Haulenbeck , whose parents were from Pompton, New Jersey. Mary Ann's father was Jacob Haulenbeck. Her mother was Catherine Vreeland. Daniel Conklin's family was related by marriage to the Fredericks family that also came from the Pompton Plains area. I suspect that Daniel may be the son of John "Koghelin" and Antje [Anne] Frederiks of Pompton Plains, born on 21 March 1794, and baptized at the Reformed Dutch Church of Pompton Plains. Daniel's eldest daughter, Ann, later married Nicholas Fredericks. Pompton Plains is in Morris County, New Jersey, where there are Conklins who also appear under the surname "Coughlin." My search for Conklins in Morris County and surrounding areas, such as Orange County and Rockland County, New York, has barely begun. I am beginning to suspect that the search for the parents of Elias Conklin of Newark may lead me to descendants of the "Westchester Conklins."

Not knowing where Elias belonged in terms of the three pre-colonial Conklin family lines, I kept what records I picked up along the way in case they might relate to Elias. As part of the process of sorting out these records, I created a Conklins of Essex County Timeline for Conklin/Coughlin family members who lived in Elizabeth[town], Westfield, Springfield, Newark, and Livingston, New Jersey, to try to get a better sense of who lived where at particular points in time. This timeline includes all of the sources that I used in compiling the information. I also created web pages for maps that show the location of various Conklins and Coughlins who were living in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey, based on the city directories for Newark for the years 1835, 1838, 1840, and 1851.

To link to the Conklin Family Timeline as well as the maps, visit http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~njconklins. I have been able to identify some of the Essex County, New Jersey Conklins as members of one of the three pre-colonial Conklin family lines. Others, such as Elias, remain a mystery. Many dots, but few connections!

I hope those of you who have hit your own Conklin/Coughlin brick walls as you seek your Essex County, New Jersey roots may find some clues to your puzzles here.

The Illinois State Archives pre 1916 death index is far from complete, so that would explain why her name can't be found at this time.

The chance of Ellen's parents names being listed on the death record is slim:

Death certificates show the name, age, sex, marital status, and race of the deceased; the places of birth, death and burial; the dates of death and burial; the cause of death; the date filed; and the signature of the physician and the registrar.

Death record or register show the name, race, marital status, age, sex, and occupation of the deceased; the date, place, and the primary cause of death; contributing causes and duration; the place and date of burial; the name and address of the undertaker; and the name and address of the physician.

Do you know what religion they were? if so, you can try and attempt to contact the church to see if they have any records that pertain to Thomas and Ellen, even the children's baptism's, if they were baptised, may yield a name for a sister or brother of Ellen's, and help with the search.
Hi Mark,

Sorry, I don't know the family, nor are they in my extended tree.

You can go to familysearch dot com and search for more information, you have to sign in, but it's free.

Ed

I write a blog about my genealogy research at www.zelsersk.blogspot.com called Mine, Yours', and the Other Guy's Genealogy. I have several family lines that ended up in Napa, CA by the late 1800s, early 1900s. I also have many ancestors from Ireland and a couple of lines from Germany. Other locations where people stopped along the way include NYC; Newport, New York; Baltimore, Maryland; Aurora, Minnesota; Austin, Nevada; and, I'm sure a few other places including North Dakota. Check out my blog. I've written several posts about Flanagan's in Napa, CA.

Well, if you wait long enough (or maybe not too long) you find some information from a blood relative. Johanna Coughlin's (b. 1889 Co. Clare, Ireland) parents were Daniel Coughlin and Ann Mary McMahon. Daniel Coughlin's parents were James Coughlin and Anne Gooney. Ann Mary McMahon's parents were Patrick McMahon and Mary McNamara. I'm still waiting to source this information fully but it sounds like the Clare Heritage Center in Ireland has some information there.

Hi, I hope we have something here. All I know about my gggrandfather, Patrick Coughlin, is that he married in Phila in 1842 to Catherine Fagan. they had twelve children. He worked for the PRR and moved to West Phila., that is where I think his son, Daniel, met and married Mary Catherine Donnegan. Patrick and his wife, Catherine, are buried in Holy Cross Cemetery. Do you know anything else, or have any other questions, I hope! Pat

Hi I wonder if we are related. My Timothy Coughlan was born in Ireland moved to Canada married Ellen McCathy (she was born there but she was of Irish descent) they moved to Boston where my Great Grandmorther Mary Isabella Coughlan was born.
(Ellen's mothers name was also Mary). Tim's dad's name was William. William T Coughlan. Spelling of Coughlan could also be Coghlan. Mary Isabella was born in Boston 8-13-1886.
