James Coulter, Melancthon, Ontario-news article December 14, 1905

Orangeville Banner
Thursday, December 14, 1905

A property sold; a higherpriced property bought; a ruing of the latter bargain; an unsuccessful attempt to withdraw from the deal; a brooding over the matter to the point of insanity. This seems the only explanation available for the motives that actuated the principal in the awful crime committed at Shrigley at noon Thursday of last week.

The principal was Melancthon farmer James Coulter, about 56 years of age. His victims were his wife Mary, about 45, his daughter Ida, aged 14 or 15 and his son Willie, aged 11 or 12.

Coulter had a load of oats ready to take to Melancthon Station. He had told his neighbours he was going to market his oats, had hitched up his team and was seen to drive down the lane as far as his house, stop, and then turn the wagon around again and drive back to the barn.

George Kitching and Leonard Ostrander, who were loading wood at the opposite side of the road from the Coulter farm, saw smoke issuing from an upstairs window as though the place was on fire. Hurrying to the house to give the alarm of fire, and making their way in at the kitchen door, their surprise and horror at the sight that met their gaze can easily be imagined. Stretched out on the floor were three members pf the family — the husband, wife and daughter — the man and woman quite dead and the daughter at practically her last gasp, unconscious.

Upstairs, clothing and a feather tick on a bed were discovered to be on fire and the blaze was quickly extinguished. Further investigation led to the discovery of the boy in the barn, alive but unconscious, and he died the same evening without regaining consciousness.

Having bludgeoned his wife and children with an axe, the husband had taken his own life with his 32-calibre revolver.

An inquest in Shelburne Friday led to the coroner’s jury concluding: “We believe the said James Coulter was temporarily insane when he committed the several deeds of violence mentioned.”
I have not been able to find any information on my great grandmother Lucinda(Coulter) Frost,(wife of Isaiah Frost Jr.) other than Jesse Coulter living next to them in Fayette Co.
I am Jack Coulter and as far as I know the first Coulter to appear in South Jersey was William from a family in Lewes Deleware. William was born in 1787 and died in 1854. Right now that is all I know but a cousin has done a lot of research and is about to publish her work. She may be able to help you. Her name is Janis Barry and her address is 27 Chestnut Drive, Woodstown, NJ 08098

I doubt that this will help. However, my grandfather (Fred Miller Coulter) moved to Beulah, Michigan from Indiana in the 1940's. He was married to Rosa Victoria Proffitt. Their only son, Fred Proffitt Coulter, also moved to Michigan at the same time.

So, they are relatively recent Michigan Coulters, probably too recently for you. I'll be happy to send you more information if you think it'll help.

Does anyone have information on these Coulters found in Attala Co MS 1850 census? I am trying to connect to John and Edward Coulter of Winston Co MS. From notes, I have 2 different
ages given for William, One states 48 born SC and another 78 yrs born MS.(1772 MS not a state at that time) So question is, Is he a brother or father? I don't have oppertunity to look at the original copy of the census.
A recent bit of information states that the children of John in Winston Co had an Uncle William Coulter, which adds to the family. If anyone descends from or has information on these families in Attala Co, please let me know...

Hi,

Im doing research on my husbands side of the family. Im the wife of Lance Farr (Coulter) his father was Earl Edward Coulter and his Mom is Pat Coulter. My husbands Mom was still married at the time he was born to her now exhusband so she gave Lance his last name though it should legally be Coulter since Earl was his Dad. I have attached our family tree report to the post. How are you related to the Coulters? Lance grew up in Auburn Hills and we currently live in Pontiac we bought a house here 3 years ago. From my research many Coulters are from the Pontiac area though many of them I have not been able to make a connection with. You can email me at Thrashmetal687@aol.com Hopefully we can make some kind of family connection. If you cant read the attached file let me know.

Jessica Farr

I grew up in Pontiac and have looked for my family for a very long time. I would like to know who you are and maybe see if we are related somehow. I didn't meet my family until about 4 years ago and I am still learning a lot about them.

Hmmm...I think it was Bob (RCoulter39) that posted that. I never had a name, only that James' spouse died on January 5, 1769 in Delaware. Now, unfortunately, I was very freewilly during my early years of research and did not obtain and/or record the proper source info that I should have.

However, being as how I have an exact date for James' spouse, I'm going to say that somewhere I got it from a cemetery insciption. Also, since I've never personally been to Delaware, I would say I got it somewhere on the internet. Perhaps you should try searching cemetery records from Sussex County, DE on Ancestry or Rootsweb.

To be honest, James' is a collateral branch for me, so I didn't spend much time there, but if I come across the info I will be more than happy to share. I have about 6-7 bankers boxes FULL of data though.

Richard in TN

Have been reading your information regarding the Coulters. I have been trying for many years to find the wife of James Coulter, son of Eleanor Torbett and James Coulter. I note you have a Margaret Peggy Hutson as his wife. May I ask where you were able to obtain this information. I am related through his son Andrew Coulter.

Thankfully, Warren shared his research with a number of us through the years.

I found the book on the Tobacco Lords using a Google search, but found it greatly exceed my budget. Warren directed me to another, which I have just ordered: THE STEEL BONNETS by George MacDonald Fraser. It is the story of the Anglo-Scottish Border Reivers. I don't know why I took so long to decide to read it. I found it on eBay.

If you would like, please contact me at sandyc@cebridge.net.

Sandy

Sandy,

My apologies for the break in correspondence. It was our anniversary so we took a little time off.

Very sorry to hear about Warren. I have obtained information from him in the past as well. He had a great deal of knowledge and he will be missed.

The book has me intrigued and so I have begun the journey of trying to find it. At this point in my genealogical research I have a vast amount of information (which needs some better organization), but I am starting to focus more on actual sources. So any source info that you have would be greatly appreciated.

Look forward to talking more and sharing info.

Richard in TN

Yes, that is my Thomas Coulter. He moved west in 1811 and helped establish Coulterville, later renamed Perrysville, OH. Thanks for the note about the online book - I will check it out!

Jonathan

I have just read about John Coulter and his son Thomas (who died 24 Oct 1844 in Richland County, OH) in an online book by Williwm Duff, _History of North Central OH: embracing Richland..._. He must have been in OH from ca. 1814.

I am also looking for a John Coulter who we believe was born in Ireland about 1740 and came to the New York sometime around 1765. He married an Abigail Parshall in New York in 1765, and later moved to Pennsylvania. John may have had a brother Simon. John had 9 kids: Thomas, David, Samuel, Jonathan, James, Mary, Abigail, John, and Elizabeth. I would love to find out where John came from, or trace the family back to their roots. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Jonathan Coulter

Richard, I've going through some of my old file as I've not worked on the Coulter line in a while. I've found an email from Warren Coulter, now deceased, who mentions a book "The Tobacco Lords" by Thomas Devine. The book was published in Britain and is hard to obtain. The researcher we hired in Scotland found in this book a reference to James Coulter, and Hugh Coulter was the captain of a ship that went bac kand forth between Glasgow and VA. Earlier, and I haven't found my source yet, I found a reference where Michael Coulter of Glasgow bought in a ship load of tobacco.

You may contact at sandyc@cebridge.net if you wish.

Sandy Coulter

Hi Richard, The info on James's death is just a statement. I have the printout sheet on him. I found it on Ancestry.com. Submitted by Janet Ariciu. It says he died in 1708 at sea or Ire. I think it might be at sea, or seems some mention of a burial would have been made.
Maybe by now Janet might know. Sorry thats all I have on him. You could contact Janet,or if you care to e-mail me, my E-Mail is RCoulter39@aol.com . Bob

Yeah. I'd be interested in information on Joseph's line as well. That is a complete missing link for me.

Sandy - I believe we have spoken in the past and I think I've even acquired info from you. Good to see you are still about.

Bob - What is your source/speculation for James' death at sea. It would make sense that the Eleanor in Scotland is the same Eleanor in Delaware. In fact, highly probable. However, I do not have any ship info for their journey. I have read speculation that the Coulter's owned ships due to the fact that James and others were merchants in Scotland. It is possible then that Eleanor used one of the family ships to make that journey with her children.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the English/Scots/Irish were pretty good about ships logs. However, I have heard that if you were traveling on your own vessel that you did not have to record yourself or your family members. Take that with a grain of salt because I am not certain.

My husband descends from Corbin Coulter, grandson of Joseph Coulter who was the son of Eleanor Coulter of Sussex Co., DE. I have been involved with a group of Coulter researchers who have worked on this family for a number of years. We feel that Eleanor Torbett was the husband of James Coulter of Dumfries, Scotland based on the results of a researcher in Scotland. James apparently died in Scotland and Eleanor moved to America with her six sons.

Sandy Coulter

Thanks for the information on James Coulter and Margaret Hutson. Gives me a clue as to where to look for some source documentation.

As far as the migration from DE to PA, this seems to run in the family as I have quite a few Coulters making the move. Particularly to Bedford County PA and surrounding areas. E.G. Thomas Coulter (s/o William Coulter, s/o Eleanor) was the sheriff of Bedford County PA. The genealogy gets a little tricky because new counties were being created from pieces of existing counties. So a particular family may show up in records of one county, then 5-10 years later show in another county, when in fact they haven't moved at all.

In regards to your last inquiry, information on Eleanor:

Eleanor appears to be the progenitor of the Coulter line in the new world. She is the first Coulter to appear in Sussex County DE records in about 1719. She was a widow and records show she had 6 grown children: John, James, Samuel, Charles, Joseph and William. I am descended from William.

Hi Richard, I have the info on James. He was married to Margaret"Peggy"Hutson born abt.1706 in Scot. Son John was married to Mary Semple lived in Pa.until the trip to Greenbrier Co.,WVa. Trying to figure out why and when John left De. for Pa. Seems most of the Coulters came through Va. to now WVa. Do you have any info on Eleanor when she came to De.,and who she was with? Bob

Hello Bob - Well there are so many John's and James' it can get really confusing. The James you are referring to (James born abt. 1700), I show as one of Eleanor's sons, married to ??? (I do not have her name). I show that they had a son named Andrew, but must admit I don't have much info or source data there.
