Arthur Council and James Council

All of the postings that I am finding for Arthur Council or James Council seem to be several years old. If anyone with info on these Revolutinary War soldiers is still reading this message board, please reply.

I have tied my ancestor, Anne Smith, to a brother, Arthur Council. I found a Gift Deed in Hickman County, TN from Arthur Council to his sister, Anne Smith, of "military land heired by my father." This gift was originally signed in 1806 by Arthur Council of Bladen Co. NC. The deed was registered in Hickman County, TN in 1831, It was certified by the register's office in Bladen County, NC in 1829. It identifies the land to be on the Duck & Pine Rivers. I found archived records of warrant no. 1849 for 3840 acres of land granted to James Council, heir of Arthur Council. I also found the command by the Secretary of State James Glasgow for the survey to be done for this land. It appears that this brother Arthur Council is son of James Council whe was hier to Captian Arthur Council. The survey for this Military grant includes a map that is indeed on Duck & Pine rivers in Hickman County, TN, which at that time was Tennessee County, NC. My searches in Ancestry.com identifies grant 1848 to Arthur Council's heirs for 3840 acres. Was there 2 grants or is there an error in the information on Ancestry? Further, family trees that I find posted indicates that Captain Arthur Council was unmarried and that his brother, James was unmarried. So, just who is the James Council that was hier to the land granted on behalf of Captain Arthur Council, who himself had a son named Arther to whom he passed at least a part of the land, and also had a daughter named Anne?

POW/MIA Korean War, NC, COUNCIL

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Chatham County, North Carolina as his home of record. His remains were never recovered.

Soldier: WILLIAN EDWARD COUNCIL
Born: October 9, 1930, Caucasian
Date of loss: July 4, 1950, POW

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. The Council family is one of those missing.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Newton, NJ Soldier Home from Korea, 1951 article/Charles Council

The articles in “From the Archives” are reprinted from previous editions of The New Jersey Herald, which began publication in 1829; the Sussex Register, which began in 1814; and the Sussex Independent, which began in 1871. The stories appear in their original form, although some have been edited for length.

August 30, 1951, Newton Soldier Home from Koea
After a year and 16 days of battle experience in Korea, Pfc. Charles Council, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Council, Union Place, Newton, returned home this week on rotation. He is now on a 30-day leave and will report for duty at Indiangap, Pa.
Council, who graduated from Newton High School in June, 1948, and enlisted in the Army the following month, wears the Bronze Star for meritorious action under fire, and five Battle Stars for participation in major engagements. In September, 1950, he suffered shrapnel wounds in the right arm and leg while his company of engineers was assisting in the crossing of the Nakong River. After treatment in the field he remained on duty, and the company was under fire for three days while they rounded up boats for the 21st Infantry Regiment crossing of the river. It was for this engagement that he received the Bronze Star.
The Newton soldier received the Battle Stars for participating in two offensive and three defensive actions. It was his company that put the first bridge across the Han River when the U.N. forces returned to Seoul. He was attached to the 55th Engineer Combat Company.
Council received his training at Fort Belvoir, Va., and was sent to Japan in January, 1949. He was among the first American troops in Korea in July, 1950, after the fighting broke out.

Four Willis brothers were Joseph’s father Agerton Willis (born circa 1727; died 1777), and his brothers Daniel Willis (born circa 1716; died 1785), Benjamin Willis III (born circa 1725; died 1785), and George Willis (born circa 1730). The one known sister of these four brothers was Joanna Willis (born circa 1730; died 1791). Joanna married James Council (born circa 1716) of Isle of Wight County, Virginia in about 1751.
