My great grandmother was Lenora (Nora) Tolley and she was born in Jackson County, WV in 1868, She married a "Mr. Counts" and had 4 children; 1. William Arthur Counts born ABT 1890, 2. John E. Counts born ABT 1893, 3. Arizona M. Counts born 1896 and 4. Benjamin Counts born ABT 1899.

Seeking information about this side of the family because my grandmother was Arizona M. Counts and this is a mystery to us. We also heard there was some Indian lineage but have been unable to identify anything.

My Mom's Mom or My Grandmother

She is a mistery. She died when my mother was 10 years old. I was never given her maiden name. Can't seem to find anything about her. Her name Irene C. Counts. Not sure about the middle initial. The first time she shows up in Ancestery records is 1920 census in Ohio. Would like to find more about her.

Christopher Counts and Mary Bishop Counts are my great-great grandparents. There is a error in one of their children's name. "Col" is actually Eva. Somewhere down the line it was transposed. Eva was born 1857 in Kentucky. She married John Bush and they had 5 or 6 children; one of which is my grandfather "Everett Mills Bush". George Washington Counts was also married like 3 times. If anyone has any family history I would appreciate the knowledge.

I would like to find her parents--sister--brothers--or any family at all. I cannot find any record of her birth. Where she came from,or what she did. Griggs was her second husband.

If you are a member of ancestry.com you will find a marriage record for Charles E Counts and Ollie Stogdale in Carter County Mo (his last name shown as Counter- but enlarging the record shows Counts)- license issued 4/18/1900 and mrd 4/20/1900. Her mother gave consent but name not shown on license - might be on record though. Charles and Ollie shown as from Reynolds Co. You didn't give your father's name, but found 1920 census for Edson Griggs, wife Olla, newborn Clayton Griggs, and 2 step-sons of Edson - Howard Counts 3 3/12 and not named step-son age 18. (Was either Shannon or Reynolds Co - forgot). Edson died 10/22/45 and Olla (Ollie?) still living - may have remarried. - Above just random thoughts and leads.

Easter is part of the Counts family that I am. Do you or anyone have any photo's of her. I am also trying to find out where my Grandfather was buryed at. His name was Charles Edward Counts Born July 4th 1878, Ellington, Mo. Some say he died in Joplin Mo. But I can find no grave. I know the date of Death is wrong. It says 1916. My father--his son--told me he was 12 years old when his father died. My father was born in 1914. Also, I can find nothing on Ollie Stogsdill his wife, and mother of my father. Some in the family tell me she was illegitimate therefore I won't find anything on her. Can you tell me anything about her. Who were her parents? any brothers or sisters. Where did they come from. Thank you.

Norman H.Counts was born in 1918 in Akansas his father was Jesse Norman Counts.
Norman was said to have married between 1938-1939 but I have not found a marriage,Norman lived in Olympia.

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Weshtenaw, Michigan as his home of record. His remains were never recovered. Our government has no family contact at this time for this soldier

Soldier: Ernest Counts
Born: August 1, 1924, Black
Date of loss: Nov ember 28, 1950 POW

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (79years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

I too am trying to find information about Minerva or Manervia (Counts) Davis. She is my GGGrand mother, on my Grand Mother, Julia (Davis) Manasco side. I was told that she was either full or half-blood Creek. Some have also said she may have been Cherokee indian, but I was pretty sure she told me once Creek but I've heard both. I have no proof of this and have not been able to find any information as of yet to back up this statement.

Waldron- Tate Family

I am descended from Thomas Waldron b 1782 Bedford Ca VA and Sally Tate, through their son John Waldron. Im searching for Sally's parents. I have been told that maybe Nathanial tate (Nathaniel Tate , Capt. was born ABT 1755. He married Susannah Gilliam, daughter of Unplaced Gilliams, born ABT 1760). is her father, however on her marriage bond, it is signed by Jesse Tate. I see that many people list Jesse as her father. I cant find that anywhere. I would love it if you can help me sort out all the Tates, and help me find Sally's background. Im a DAR member and want to find another patriot.

I cant find that Jesse had a daughter named Sally, I do find he has a daughter Sarah who it appears married an Anthony. Its all so confusing.
I was sent this info today, dont know if its correct:

Jesse Tate as Sally's uncle. I have Sally H. Tate (born abt 1778, Virginia) who married Thomas Waldron on 12 Jun 1799. I have Sally's parents as Capt. Nathaniel Tate (Born 1752, Fredericksville, VA. Died Aug 1805,Russell, Bedford, VA) and Susannah Gilliam (Born abt 1757, of Bedford, VA. Died 26 Jan 1778, Bedford, VA)Susannah is Nathaniel's second wife he married on 26 Jan 1778. Nathaniel's first wife was Rhoda Terry and they were married on 22 Feb 1773 and had one child, Nathaniel Green Tate. Rhoda died bef 1778.

There is another Sally Tate who is a first cousin to Sally Tate mentioned above. This Sally's parents were Jesse Tate and Margaret Miller. Jesse and Nathaniel were brothers and children of Henry Tate and Sarah Netherland.
Thank you so much for any help, I will appreciate any suggestions or guidance. Do you happen to have a list of Capt. Nathaniel Tate (Born 1752, Fredericksville, VA. Died Aug 1805,Russell, Bedford, VA) and Susannah Gilliam children? I am trying to prove my Sally is descended from a REV WAR VET. Thanks for any help.

I am wondering if Arminda was married to a Cantrell and her maiden name is Elswick. I did find possible parents of Hiram Cantrell and Nancy Mullins but there is also a Arminda who divorced a William Cantrell. I do not find anything about my grandmother Henrietta being listed as a child of Arminda's in some of the census's. Very confusing!! Wish I had done this searching when my dad was alive!

I have no idea who Henrietta's father was. I would like information on her mother's family. I know Arminda is referred to at times as a Cantrell or an Elswick. My mother-in-law is the grandaughter of Henrietta Counts. She is the daughter of Leota Counts Rasnick.

Henry Counts Sr.

Henry Counts Sr. was born 1794 in SC. The Henry Counts Sr. family is in the 1830 Lawrence County TN census but they left there some time before 1840 because they are in the 1840 Tishomingo County MS census (listed as Countz). Henry Counts is listed as a juror in Tishomingo County, MS for the court session of 11 march 1848. His first wife must have died sometime in the 1840's because Henry Sr. married again in 6 Jan 1846 to Sarah Rose and she appears in the 1850 census where they are still in Tishomingo County MS. Henry, Sarah and the younger children are in the 1860 Polk County AR census. Henry Sr.'s tombstone shows he died Oct 1867 at age 73 near Umpire, Howard County AR. He is buried in the Cedar Hill cemetery. (NOTE The Counts family did not move, Howard County was formed in 1870 from the part of Polk County where the Counts family lived) The Counts name is sometimes spelled Counce or Countz. In very early records it is sometimes Kountz. It appears the original Counts family was from Germany. It is interesting to note both Henry Counts Sr. and Zadock Brewer were born in the late 1700's in SC. They both moved to TN by 1830 and both to MS by 1840. There was only one county in between them in MS. It seems possible they knew each other before the marriage of Henry Jr. and Sally.

Children of Henry Counts SR (mother unknown, died before 1846 when he remarried)

Please note: The Counts family did not move although 1860 shows them in Polk County and 1870 in Howard County. Howard County was formed in 1870 from the part of Polk County where the Counts family lived. So they just became part of the new county.

John Counts (son of Henry SR) was born about 1820 in TN. He married Lucretia Richardson 7 Sept 1839 in Lawrence County TN. Lucretia was born about 1820 in TN. Their oldest child was born about 1841. In the 1850 census John and family are living in Tishomingo County MS, only a few houses from his father. In 1870 and 1880 he is in Colbert County AL.

Carroll was born about 1825 in TN. He married Charlotte Nunley 9 Sept 1842 in Tishomingo County MS. Charlotte was born about 1831 in MS. In the 1860 census Carroll and Charlotte are in Tishomingo County MS living a few houses from Henry. In 1860 they are in Polk County AR, again living near Henry SR. Carroll died before 1870 since in the 1870 Howard County AR census Charlotte and children are listed without Carroll.

Thomas was born about 1830 in TN. In 1850 Thomas is listed in the Tishomingo County MS census living with his brother John. In the 1860 census he is living with his father, Henry SR, in Polk County AR.

Tennessee was born about 1831 in Tennessee. She married John McAffee 8 Sept 1852 in Tishomingo County MS. Unknown where she was in 1860 or 1870. A search of the entire census for 1880 does not list anyone named Tennessee McAffee.

Henry C born 1835 in Lawrence County TN. He married Sarah/Sally Ann Brewer 11 January 1853 in Tippah County MS. Not located in the 1860 census but were in Yell County AR by 1863 when he enlisted in the Union Army. They are in the 1870 Yell County, AR census and in the 1880 Searcy County AR census.

Peter is living in a boarding house in the 1860 Polk County census. Not located in 1870 but in 1880 is living in Howard County with his sister Manerva and her husband Nathaniel Davis. In 1880 he is listed as married but no wife is listed on the census.

Manerva was born about 1842 in Tennessee. She married James Nathaniel Davis 13 Sep 1860. Manerva and Nathaniel are listed in the 1880 Howard County, AR census.

Children of Henry Counts SR and Sarah Rose (married 6 Jan 1846 in Tishomingo County MS. She was much, much younger than Henry and is listed as age 22 in 1850 and age 30 in 1860.

Catherine born about 1847 in MS. Listed as age 3 in 1850 census. This is probably the Margaret age 12 listed in the 1860 census. The dates match and there is no Margaret listed in 1850 census.

Benjamin born about 1850 (not in the 1850 census) in Tishomingo County MS. He is age 10 in the 1860 census. He is listed in the 1880 Howard County, AR census as age 29. Also listed is his mother Sarah Counts, age 46. There is no wife or children listed for Benjamin in 1880.

Urah Lawrence COUNTS was born 11 December 1875, in Alabama
and died 27 July 1965, in Mineral Wells, Texas. He was buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery Fort Worth, Texas.

He married Mollie BERRY on 26 April 1896. She was born November 1877, in Alabama and died 18 June 1968. She was buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery Fort Worth, Texas.

They are on the 1880 Census, Saints Beat, Colbert County, Alabama; the 1900 Census, Leighton Beat, Colbert County, Alabama: 1930 Census, Wise County, Texas.

Urah's father, William Campbell COUNTS was born August 1838 in Alabama and died 12 February 1925, Chico, Wise County, Texas. His mother, Sarah Jane HORTON was born November 1837 in Alabama and died in 1922. They both are buried at the Glendale Cemetery, Colbert County, Alabama.

I think it is probable the Henry Nicholas Counts of Granger County TN is related to my Henry Counts born 1794 in SC based on census. Henry was in Lawrence County TN in 1830, in Mississippi in 1840 and 1850 and in Polk County AR by 1860. His son Henry Jr married Sally Bruer in Tippah County MS in 1853. Henry and Sally also came to AR by 1860 and were in Searcy County AR by 1880. I also believe Mary Counts married to Jacob Graves is the same family. The father of Mary was John Counts. This faimily came from TN to MS and then to Searcy County AR. Same migration route and many other connections between these two Counts families. However no actual connections found with the Granger County TN Counts.

Ray, you are the first Hammer descendant that I have found in a long time. Martha and Rutha are the daughters's of Joel and Hannah Otty. This Hannah was Joel's first wife.

I descend throught Joel's second wife,Nancy Hannah Keith.

It took a long time to prove each of Joel's wives. Hilda Beaty for years was thinking that the first wife was a Lytle, but a DAR application finally proved the correct surname. Virginia

I descend from Nicholas Counts and Martha Hammer--first in Grainger Co., TN; then migrated to IL around early 1830's. Nicholas died in IL; Martha then moved her family to Ste. Genevieve Co., MO in an area called New Tennessee--today it is known as Avon, MO. Aaron and her sister were already there; she moved to be near Aaron and his family. They lived there until their deaths.

Henry Counts was born in around 1803 in Virginia, the son of Nicholas Counts, Sr. He married Mary Campbell. He may have married twice, as a marriage is shown between Henry Counts and Mary Stubblefield on 23 January 1831 in Jefferson County, Tennessee. Since both wives were apparently named Mary, the typical genealogical information would not note a difference, Mary Campbell is the daughter of Archibald and Jane (Peck) Campbell of Greene County, Tennessee. This appears to be disputed by at least one person. However, the evidence is compelling. Jane Peck was the daughter of Adam Peck, pioneer of Mossy Creek, Tennessee and adjacent neighbor of Benjamin Neal. Of the second marriage, Martin Stubblefield provided the marriage bond for Mary Stubblefield's marriage to Henry Counts.

Only Peter and Adam Counts are shown in the 1820 Census of Tennessee and they are in Franklin County. The 1830 Censusof Grainger County, Tennessee showed Henry Counts at page 386 with 2 males between ages 30 and 40; 2 females under age 5; and 1 female age 30 to 40. SIMON3 STUBBLEFIELD (JEFFERYE2, WILLIAM1) was born April 25, 1629 in Castle Camps, Cambridgeshire, England, and died in Gloucester Co.,VA.

Notes for SIMON STUBBLEFIELD:

The first Stubblefield to come to America that I have record of is Symon Stubblefield b.1629 in England, d.1688 in VA. One story in my family is that Stubblefield brothers came to America and one of them was given a land grant of 50,000 acres in N.E. Virginia by the King of England. These stories may have been about Symon's sons.
I found an entry in the Stubblefield Family Genealogy Forum on the internet by Diane Stubblefield Sylvester dated Oct. 9, 1998 that I thought was interesting and corroborates the stories I had heard in my family:
"Here's what I have on Simon - none of it is original research: Simon Stubblefield was born in England about 1629, in a village called Castle Camps, near Cambridge. Simon's father, Jefferye Stubblefield, b. 1596 in Castle Camps, married circa 1620 in Castle Camps, Marye - , b. 1600(?) in Castle Camps. Simon's grandfather, William Stubblefield, b. 1570, was also born in Castle Camps as was his grandmother, Annys - , b. 1575. Annys died 2 May 1626 in Castle Camps. Simon lived in Virginia as early as March 27, 1672, but possibly sooner, when 'a matter difference between Ed. Cheesman and Thomas Cheesman and Symon Stubblefield' was referred to 'judgment in England.' On April 23, 1688, he was granted 288 acres in Gloucester County, Virginia, for transporting four persons into the colony; the land was near the courthouse and adjacent to the land of William Ross. In 1704 he paid quit rents on 200 acres in Ware Parish, Gloucester County. In 1656, in Halifax Co., Virginia, 36,000 acres were awarded to George Stubblefield from the King of England, and 17,000 acres were given to him in the same year from Lord Halifax...."

Although the dates don't quite match up, it does confirm a large amount of land was given to the early Stubblefields from the King of England.
Simon apparantly had two sons. They were Edward b.? and George who was born in 1675 in VA. George's wife was Ann. Robert Stubblefield was the son of George and Ann. Robert was b.1702 in VA and died 1775 in NC. Robert's wife was Anne Parker, b.1704 in VA/d.1787 in TN. Robert and Anne had seven children. Their sixth was Wyatt, b. 1744 and married Ann Challis. Wyatt Jr. was the son of Wyatt and Ann and lived in Grainger Co., TN. Robert Stubblefield b.9Apr1803, was the son of Wyatt Jr. and Jemima. Wyatt Jr. died in 1816 and Jemima remarried in 1820. Robert

Ray, not sure if we have ever exchanged information. I have not worked on my Counts family for a long time. However I would be interested in any possible connection between Henry Counts who was living in Lawrence County TN in 1830 and moved to MS by 1840 and Polk County AR by 1850 and your Granger County Counts. Based on census records Henry Counts was born about 1894 in SC and died in Howard (formerly Polk) County AR. I have a list of all Henry Counts chilren and happy to share. Any information you have on Henry Counts would be much appreciated.

I am guessing that the "other" Counts family you are refering to is the Henry Counts listed below. I have much info on this family (including census)and happy to share. Henry Counts Sr.

Henry Counts Sr. was born 1794 in SC. The Henry Counts Sr. family is in the 1830 Lawrence County TN census but they left there some time before 1840 because they are in the 1840 Tishimingo County MS census (listed as Countz). Henry Counts is listed as a juror in Tishimingo County, MS for the court session of 11 march 1848. His first wife must have died sometime in the 1840's because Henry Sr. married again in 6 Jan 1846 to Sarah Rose and she appears in the 1850 census where they are still in Tishimingo County MS. Henry, Sarah and the younger children are in the 1860 Polk County AR census. Henry Sr.'s tombstone shows he died Oct 1867 at age 73 near Umpire, Howard County AR. He is buried in the Cedar Hill cemetery. (NOTE The Counts family did not move, Howard County was formed in 1870 from the part of Polk County where the Counts family lived) The Counts name is sometimes spelled Counce or Countz. In very early records it is sometimes Kountz. It appears the original Counts family was from Germany. It is interesting to note both Henry Counts Sr. and Zadock Brewer were born in the late 1700's in SC. They both moved to TN by 1830 and both to MS by 1840. There was only one county in between them in MS. It seems possible they knew each other before the marriage of Henry Jr. and Sally.

It is possible that you descend from Aaron C. Counts and Rutha Hammers or Nicholas Counts, Jr and Martha Patsy Hammers? I descend through the Hammer family.
