Do you have an approximate date? My ancestor William Coupland left England before 1851, went to NY and then went to Fulton Co. OH, where he was counted in the 1860 census. Have never heard of a sojurn in PA, but he lived a somewhat mysterious past. A date would settle the matter for me.

Re: David Coupland

I have seen your reference to your Great Grandfather Richard Thomas Coupland and the reason I am writing to you is that
my GG Uncle, John Mcleod, was Hotel Keeper at the Balnagowan Arms Hotel, Kincardine, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland in 1891 and on the 1891 Census for Scotland there is a Richard Thomas Coupland shown as a visitor to the Hotel and MD of "Lirad Comy Brewery" (often there are interpretation of writing errors on census returns), and living at Gruinards House, Kincardine. I know that my Uncle's wife was Donaldina Ross, but this 1891 census shows that his wife was
Emily Coupland. I think this is a mistake and that she was probably Richard Thomas Coupland's wife - both she and Richard are 48 years old. I wonder if you have any information at all and if you can confirm if Emily was Richard's wife? It's possible that Richard was on business at the Balnagowan Arms Hotel due to his connection with the brewery. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you.
Denise

Hi, this isn't the same person you have mentioned above, but I thought you may have some links for me.

My g-g-grandfather was William Coupland, born around 1836. He is listed on the 1851 census as living in Millgate, Selby as an apprentice to his uncle and it looks from the 1861 that he was born in Armley. Unfortunately, the copy of the 1851 census record is really bad and I can't read any of the other information. Do you have any clues? William married Mary and they had at least two sons, John and Frank, both born in Selby. William seems to disappear by 1871, but his wife describes herself as married, not widowed, so he may have been away from home.
Couplands in Illinois

I am trying to confirm the parentage of my ancestor Elizabeth Coupland.

Elizabeth Coupland married Thomas Brownlee in 1852 in Peoria, Illinois. In 1860, they were living next to a "Copeland" family in Henry County, Illinois. I suspect this family was her mother, father, and brother.

Joseph Coupland was born about 1810 in England
Susannah Coupland was born about 1806 in England
William Coupland was born about 1836 in England.

I found an 1841 census in Sherburn, Yorkshire, England with these same family member names at approximately the same ages. Family history has always listed Elizabeth as being born in Yorkshire.

Elizabeth Coupland was born 30 Jul 1834 in Yorkshire (?) England. She died 17 Dec 1907 in Galva, Henry, Illinois.

If anyone could provide any insight or leads to finding my Coupland ancestors I would be grateful.

Thank you!

Dan Shire
dashire@comcast.net

Hi,

I have a Coupland who is an ancestor of my wife I have been trying to track.
She is Elizabeth Everett (formerly Coupland)who Married a George Everett. They had a son born 23 march 1855 and was registered as "Copland" Everett on 26 March 1855 ( entry No 334 in the District of Market Rasen). I have a copy of the Birth Cert. Residence at that time is shown as Holme Hill, West Rasen. Any help? I have nothing before Elizabeth, but the coincidence is that Coupland Everett died in 1921, the same year as my father in law was born, and he was christened John Coupland Everett. My wife seems to remember aunts called coupland at Hilltop Farm , Burton Gorse Sleaford (Aunty May) and a Betty Coupland in the early 50's, (cscoup@yahoo.co.uk)

I read your message about Couplands in London and got a little confused! But I thought I would write to you anyway to let you know about the John Coupland and William Coupland I have come across in my research, in case it is of some relevance, or helps you exclude some entries.
William Coupland was born in Beverley, Yorks in 1828 (son of David and Ann). Between 1851 and 1861 he moved to London and married. He had a son named John. John Coupland was born in 1874 in east London. William died between 1871 and 1881. William was an engineer.
When searching for the death of William, I ended up ordering the wrong certificate. The information given was that William Coupland, butcher, died aged 62 in 1877 in Holborn. His wife was named as MR Coupland.
This may be totally irrelevant to you, but I hope it may help in some way! If you need any more info, I will see if I can help.
