Edwin Court

My 2nd great grandfather was Edwin Court born abt 1831 in Madras, India. His father was John Henry Court as listed in the LDS Collection for India marriages 1782-1848 when he married Maria Martin in 1853. He married Margaret Rebecca Rouchette in 1862.I have found many references for children of John Henry Court, none of which include Edwin. Any help would be much appreciated.

I know this message you posted about relatives from PEI and your relatives with the surname "Court", I was wondering if you found your answers?? I too am researching the "Courts" from PEI and I am flying there to meet relatives in August this summer. I would love to know who in your family you are wondering about and if they are related to my Great Grandfather George Court Sr. He had 13 brothers and sisters. You can check out my family tree and see where or if your info fits. Let me know

Nothing personal but not in your family. If you click on the Board Information button, above right on this screen, then you will see the board administrator's email address and that is me. Apart from that I do the Court FHS website www.courtgen.com and newsletter. I find any research I do for members or non members of the Court FHS generally increases my knowledge which is why I am board administrator.

Using Ancestry it is possible to find out if people were alive up to 2 years ago (deaths are not released by the govt for 2 years to avoid illegal activities). It is possible to build up families but to find and contact living relatives one has to use websites that have current electoral roles or phone numbers which can get a bit expensive. Other facilities are organisations like the Salvation Army. For this you will need to do your research first and then approach your nearest SA branch, they will do nothing unless they have a person in front of them making the request. The other method is find out where the family is likely to be living and do a local newspaper search and email the local newspaper, they like human interest and pictures.

Keep me updated with what you have either through the message board or via my email address and I will let you have what I can find.

Some where in NZ you have the family of the 1927 Wimbledon Junior Tennis champion, Richard A Court, and his son was an NZ chess champion.

John C

Children of Court Millbanks marriages
Arthur F Court born 3rd quarter 1925 – Willesden
George W Court born 2nd quarter 1923 – Willesden
Lilian R Court born 2nd quarter 1929 – Willesden
Albert F Court born 4th quarter 1920 – Willesden

Children of Court Millbank marriages
Henry C Court born 4th quarter 1927 – Willesden
Rose Court 3rd quarter 1919 - Willesden
Henry C Court 4th quarter 1927 - Willesden
Leslie J Court 4th quarter 1932 - Willesden
Beryl R Court 4th quarter 1935 - Hendon
Winifred R Court 4th quarter 1940 - Hendon
Ellen I Court 3rd quarter 1917 - Willesden
Albert F Court 4th quarter 1920 – Willesden

Do you know if Beryl and Winifred had sisters or brothers?

Beryl R Court is shown as marrying David J Broad in Willsden in the 3rd quarter of 1956
But there is another
Beryl R Court who married a Bryan E Worley in the nearby Uxbridge in the 1st quarter of 1956

Winifred R Court married Philip G Gay in the 1st quarter in 1959 in Willesden.

All of the areas shown (Willesden, etc.) are registration areas and may not be the boroughs that they lived in.

Only one Winifred R Gay listed as died but she would have been born about 1890 but a Philip George Gay died in August 2005 in Brent. Winifred could have died in the last two years but you do have the option for listing all children born of a Gay Court marriage (two possible boys born in 1959 & 1960), tracking a local paper and see if they are interested in doing a human interest story (they do like pictures for these stories).

There is a Robert with a Philip Gay born 1936 in the Willesden area on Genesreunited so it may be worth a punt on there. No obvious links to Court Broad or Court Worley mariages on Genes.

There is only one child born to a Court Broad marriage and that is a girl in 1960 and two girls to the less likely Court Worley marriage in 1958 & 1960.

I have included Millbank and Millbanks marriages as there may be entry or transcription errors. There seems to be a significant amount of time between the birth of Arthur in Willesden and Winifred in 1940 are they definitely siblings and not cousins?

Is any of the information relevant?
Looking for information on this Court family. John and Mary Ann Court had three children...Frederick, John and Emily. Mary Ann must of died between 1871 and 1881 and we think she was born in Mitcham, surrey. John was born about 1815 and was a bricklayer. We think the children were born in St Andrews. Frederick born about 1849, John born about 1855 and Emily born about 1858.
If anyone knows anything about this family, email me on bkbowler@bigpond.com

Thanks and have a nice day.
Kerry
Australia

Hi John,

Hope you enjoyed your holiday!

I've been doing some research on my own. The National Archives web site has provided additional information pertaining to William Court (ie. land, mortgage and estate records). This gentleman is at the right place and time of my 2nd great grandfather's (George Court) birth.

Throughout the census years (1841-1911) it states place of birth as Drayton, Warwickshire, with the exception of one year stating S-O-A.

Please feel free to contact me directly at: gfaibish@rogers.com

Regards,
Gail

George Andrew Court, illegitimate son of Sarah Court, baptised on 20 December 1835. The mother was Sarah Court, and this ties up with the story that the daughter of Sarah Court (the daughter of Thomas and Ann Court of Shakespeare's house) had an illegitimate offspring by one of the earliest visitors to the Birthplace when it started as a tourist trap.

Nicholas Fogg's book on Stratford says:

"Mrs. Hornby (who was the tenant of the 'Swan and Maidenhead', as the Birthplace was then known, and AnnCourt great rival in the initial stages of the tourist trade) invective must have gained pungency when her rival's daughter was impregnated by George Skinner, the chaise driver at the 'White Lion'. He absconded but, like a good Stratfordian, was induced to return by the hope of living at the Birthplace after making a decent woman of Miss Court"

No record found of George Skinner marrying Sarah Court, at least in Stratford.
I had a very quick reply from a Stratford-Court expert so I think I can complete this before I potter off.

We can find no proveable links to any family but there are a number of circumstantial links to the family of William Ashby Court and his descendants. They farmed in both Drayton and Binton. The Courts farmed on several farms including Lower Binton Farm and Barton Farm. Lower Binton Farm was auctioned off as William Court was 'under distress' (financially embarassed, skint, etc.) in 1822.

I have indications that there are or have been about 4 other people all looking at this particular nexus of Courts.
Hi John,
I'm afraid the only information I have is that George was born in Drayton and his father is William (providing this information was correct on George's marriage reg). I have made several attempts to locate them in the 1841 Census without any luck. Have even searched under variants of the surname.

There is a William and Sarah in the 1851 S-O-A census. Now if George followed the traditional naming patterns, I don't see a connection with the above family. George is listed in the 1851 Census in Harborne, Staffordshire (with his future in-laws)

Would the S-O-A baptism records be transcribed.

Gail

Hi Gail,
Have you any data (name and dates of wife, children, name of farm) as the name of William is probably one of the most popular given names in the area. I even have a record of a William known as George in the Drayton area.

John C

My 3rd great grandfather, George Court was born in the Hamlet of Drayton, just outside of S-O-A circa 1830. He lists his father as William Court, farmer on his marriage registration. William was located in the 1830 Warwickshire Directory as living in Drayton.

This is the end of my research.
If anyone has come across this family, I would welcome your input.

Thank you.
Gail

Not my family but if you can help us out with anyones name and other details of the 1930s or before then we may be able to help you out. Angel can be a man's or woman's name and although it is rare in England is more usually an Italian name. In, I believe it was, the USA 1930s census there was an Angel Court but it was a girl living down in Texas. She was born in Louisiana but the remainder of the family was from Italy. More frustrating for genealogists sometimes names used within the family were sometimes not the names that appeared on their birth certificate. On certificates: is there any chance of getting your grandpa's birth certificate? Your grandpa's parents names should appear on there and maybe where he was living at the time?

Hello, I got the following information from a personal interview of Helena Sero Brant when visiting the Reserve in 1982:

Charles Henry Court b. abt 1898 Kildare, Wicklow, Ireland
Parents: Charles and Alice (Jones) Court of same location.

m. Jessie Sero on 26 Jun 1919 Deseronto, Hastings Co., Ont.
Her parents: John* and Sarah Hill or Emma Jane ____ of Deseronto.

* one record lists John Sero's wife as Emma Jane _____ another says Sarah Hill. Could be he had two wifes but no designation as to which one was mother of:

Genevieve Court who m. ---- Ladoucier, Belville, Hastings, Ont.
Hopes this helps a little.
