I am certain my grandma and your Rafael were related and knew each other. Also, all the covarrubias were related in juchitlan. There was a lot of marriages within the family so the last name would not be lost. There is a family tree on display in juchitlan. My grandma was a singer. My uncle Rafael had a store in juchitlan. My other uncle apolinar moved to juchitlan my grandma josefina married a Chavez n moved to el grullo and then Guadalajara. My grandmothers other sister also moved to Guadalajara.

Re: Covarrubias ever shortened to Covar

I am the descendant of Sherry Covar through Wardlaw through his daughter Ella. Both Ella and Sophie's grandchildren rembered that Sherry spoke with a French accent. While Sherry's father was born in France, it is likely that they were part of the immigration from Santo Domingo after the uprisings of around 1790. Many of these people settled in Charleston (Indeed, a French newspaper existed for them) and as much as 20% of the Savannah population was French speaking at one point in this time, because of settlement of Santo Domingans. Also, and importantly, many settlers were strewn up and down the Savannah River Basin, especially in Augusta and at French Store in Wilkes, County Georgia. Santa Domingans quickly acculturated here as they had already been in a Plantation economy.
I do not KNOW that the name Covar was shortened from Covarrubias, but Santo Domingo was first Spanish speaking as a colony, and later French. Many people of Spanish descent there later became culturally French. Also, Covarrubias (sp?) appears to be a Basque name originally, and that is a land divided between Spain and France, which could indicate odd cultural affiliations to this name.
Again, I do not know this. I do think that these observations may be meaningful. There is no reason I can see that the eastern European name of Kovar can be connected to these people and no apparent demographic/settlement basis for it in South Carolina in this period. That said, it is not impossible. I am not able to engage in detailed geneaology, but if someone wishes to contact me for brief interchanges I am Dale Couch at dalecouch@hotmail.com.

Hi.. I realize this is way late but i was searching for information on the surname Covar. My moms maiden name is Escobar but we just saw on the census records that they have it spelled Escovar. She said, "funny story..." turns out when her grandparents were asked what their last name was, they said "Es Covar," as in, it's Covar. But its been listed as Escovar ever since ... They spoke Spanish as far as I know, not Polish or Czech. Although central TX where they lived did have a lot of Polish and Czech immigrants. Cova means cave, or cove in Valencian. So Covarrubias is red caves.
-Laura

I am at an dead end with Sherry Covar who was born in 1786... his place of birth seems to be a mystery for alot of people...but I know I noticied on some of the Census Records that one of his son's lists his father's birthplace as being in France.

Hi,my name is Rose Elva Covarrubias, my father was Julian Covarrubias from San Antonio, Tx. I don't know much about my dad's side of the family because his father also named Julian Covarrubias left my grandmother Irene Alejandro when the kids were babies.I hear that since our last name is so unique that most of us are somehow all related by some blood line. I was hoping to find some of my relatives from that side.

I know your post is many years old, but I am hoping you receive this message. I am also a member of the Covar family of Edgefield, SC. Covar was not shortened from Covarrubias. Actually, Covar is originally Kovar and is Czech. There is a Kovar cemetery in Texas, and many Czech immigrants are buried there. The change in spelling is not rare because many people coming into the United States did not speak English, and in the rush to process them through Ellis Island or other ports, names were spelled the way the processors heard the names.
You can check this thread for another person discussing the origin of the name, and he is either Czech or Polish. I thought that was interesting, too.
Regards...

BTW, there are many Covarrubias from Spain and Mexico.

My grandfather was from Jalisco, also a Covarrubias, not sure if he was born there or not, but that's where he worked at my great grandfather's ranch. That's all I know from him, that and he had a few sisters or one, they all had came or their parents came from Spain, its frustrating but no one knows a thing from his parents, I think my grandfather's moms name was Francesca? Ring any bells, also, I would love to know what you know about this last name?

Hi, I'm Elena Covarrubias and my father was Rafael Covarrubias (1932-2000), son of Francisco Covarrubias (?-1985?) (from Juchitlan) and Emilia Santana. I remember my father speaking of additional family (Covarrubias) from Rosarita. I live outside of Boston, but have maintained ties with my father's brother Rodolfo (Guadalajara) and his family. He is my connection to the family history...I'll pick his brain on our next phone call.

Still interested? But I;ve only gotten back to 1700 (I think) to Maria Josefa Vargas. Other family members in the line (coming up) are Ysidra Diaz Vargas, Josefa Diaz, Martina Covarrubias Diaz, Clotilde Preciado Covarrubias, Teresa Nielsen Preciado, and Gloria Sanchez Nielsen (me).
On the male side going in the other direction Martina was married to Dario Preciado, Josefa to Julian Covarrubias Santana, and Ysidra to Lino Diaz. Have you run acrows any of these in Juchitlan and the environs thereby? (Clotilde was married to a Dane).

Hi, my name is Alex Cobarrubias. I am only second generation american citizen and have heard stories of my family from Mexico and places in Spain. Although my last name is spelled COB I was told it was because my grandmother misspelled it on all birth certificates of the 10 children so it has stuck. Is it really COV and we are just a new branch of the COVarrubias' or is it a different family? Past my grandparents I have yet to find COB's.
