Hi
Well I was told once when I was in my teens by a Jewish lady my cousin worked for that I must be Jewish as I had the right features for it... nose is largish and deep set eyes... always stuck with me.. Mum also said her Nana and Granddad spoke in another language when they didn't want anyone to know what they were talking about but they never went to a jewish church etc...... I will delve further while I am off work for the hols... well well I only messaged because of the name George Cove and Paddington link
Chris

Hello Chris, I was quite excited to get your e mail, the Bravington Road Address was I believe where George Cove lived with my Granny Hilda, his wife was Mary and there were a number of siblings, including Great Uncle Victor who apparently went to America and became quite wealthy. As I said Hilda married Frederick Cunnington and my Dad George John Cunnington was the result. George Cove was a stableman who I think I mentioned died of a twisted intestine in 1914 so never made it to the war. Daddy was born in 1915 December the 6th. He had a sister Jessie as well.

We are definetly Jewish, and I don't think any of the family came from Ireland. They were quite stable in the London area according to my Mum. All of the family were born in Paddington, and later moved to Uxbridge Middlesex.
Granny Hilda died of a poisoned leg in 1949.

I will have another look and see who else is involved Granny Hilda was 7 at the time of the 1901 census and is registered as being born in 1894. There was also a George who was her brother, and Francess. Great Gran was born
in Suffolk she was Mary.
The Cunnington family were also Jewish and lived two doors down that is how Granny Hilda met Grandad Frederick John because he lived in Bravington Road as well and people did not trave too far as you know. So interesting let us keep in touch and let each other know what we discover. You definetly have Jewish blood though from Granny Hilda's side George Cove. Cove if you look on Jewish Gen is also a Jewish name. It may have stemmed from Cohen but we are not sure about that. When they came from Russia is the huge
mystery, because you can trace the family to Wiltshire to Eli Cove in 1779.
Lovely to hear from you, we must be related in some way.

Hi just picking up the thread .. I also have a George Cove born 1899 his father was John Cove and Jane ? ... who had remarried after his 1st wife Mary Greenwood had died..His siblings were Arthur Cove 1896 Charles Cove B 1898 these were born in Tottenham but in the 1901 census were living in 132 Bravington Rd Paddington... John's father also names John cove came over from Ireland and were residing in Hackney Tower Hamlets...
I wonder if there is a connection here I have always believed there could be a Jewish Connection but when I saw the family had come form Ireland I then dismissed it...
Maybe you can help
Thanks Chris G

Hello Margaret. I am wondering if there is a direct connection between George Cove born in Paddington and who Married Emily Cove, they were Jewish and had a number of children including Hilda my grandmother on my father's side. She married Frederick Cunnington. My great grandfather George Cove was a stableman and he died in 1914 of a ruptured spleen. My father was George John Cunnington who married Eileen Campbell. I was Susan Cunnington until I married Said Bendhiaoui I believe there is a direct link between that side of the family and Eli Cove who came from Wiltshire and was born sometime in the late 1770s because there is a record of his birth in the local parish records.
This is so interesting. Please tell me anything you can about the family. Thank you Su Bendhiaoui

Hello Eli Cove I believe to be my ancestor also. He was born in 1770 or thereabouts in Wiltshire, may have come from an immigrant ship in Bristol.
He was Jewish, as am I. My Granny was Hilda Cove born in
1893 in Paddington London her father was George Cove a Stableman mother was Emily Cove who was born in Suffolk.
There were a number of siblings including Victor and Francess. My dad was the product of Hilda who married
Frederick Cunnington . Are you related to me do you think? Are you Jewish, ? It would be marvellous to find a relative.

You may not even get this.

Sorry I do not have any info on William Cove but hopefully you may be able to help me.

I have just starded my family tree.

My Grandmother was Ruth Cove born in Swindon England and married Edward Noresman Job Cox. Her parent were Ruth and Harry Cove my Great Grandparents. I could not find any more info on the Coves and was wondering if William Cove was from the same line and was hoping you may have some info for me so I can continue my search.

I may have contacted you before re my Cove family. I have now found some additional information.
I have now a John Cove born abt 1825 in Ireland he is married to Eliza and in the 1851 census (I can send you a copy of this if needed) they have Children John William Cove b 1846 Eliza Ma b 1849 and Robert P Cove b 1850. They were living at 74 West Side, Tower Hamlets, Stepney, in the parish of St Phillips.I cannot make out the town in Ireland that John Cove was born neither can I make out where his wife was born. The children were all born Stepney Middx. John Cove the son was my line marrying Mary Greenwood in abt 1867 at Hither Green. They then had children Elizabeth Cove b abt 1870,William Robert Cove b 1871 (my Line) Joh George Cove b 1873 but died the same year, Jane Cove b abt 1878. Minnie Cove b abt 1881. John Cove wife Mary died abt 1890 and he married again to a lady called Jane ? they went on to have other children 3 that I know of George Cove b 1890 Arthur Cove b 1891 and Charles Cove b 1898. I don't know if this is any help to you or if you can help me with any other information. I don't seem to be able to find any other trace of the first John Cove who was born in 1825 in any other census eg 1841, 1861 1871 etc and wonder why.
regards Chris Giles chrisgiles46@hotmail.com

Eli Cove is an unusual name so It could be important. Please give me details of yourself/anscesters. I have traced our oldest Eli Cove back to 1852 census, living at 8 Baldwin gardens , St Andrews Holborn. But we know he came from Wiltshire,. There was another Eli Cove who died in Wiltshire in 1841, who we think could be his father. They were both shoe makers. Eli had a son & grandson both called Eli, but the name Eli runs out after that. in our family.

I have started research on our family name, and wonder if you have come across any of the following,or maybe this will be of some help to you. My g/father was WALLACE GEORGE COVE,b. 29/1 1884,one brother WILLIAM, sisters MABEL AND OLIVE. Married ALICE SPILLER 1906, and they had 6 children, one of which was my father. My g/g'father was HENRY GEORGE COVE who married JANE PARKER in 1881. marriages took place in Bristol, and so far the family home seems to be Warmley/Bitton/ area of Glos. The family trade seems to be of shoe/bootmaker. Am awaiting m/cert. of Henry and Jane to get more info, so maybe nexy week I can fill you in with more details. Probably a different branch of the family, but its worth a try !!

As I understand it, the Coves first came to Petty Harbour and Newfoundland in the late 18th century, 3 brothers. 2 stayed in Newfoundland and the 3rd toddled off somewhere more hospitable (but far less charming no doubt!). Would love to hear from anyone else out there who may have information or a question. have a peaceful day...

(whenever I hear that name I think of the dingles on Emmerdale!)

nicki
