I'm so sad to see this is from over 10 years ago. I don't know much about my family history but am so interested in finding out. I do know that Maude is my great grandmother, her son George Leland was my grandfather, and William C. Covington is my father. I was super excited to see the picture you have of her but the site is gone. If you're still on here and could share any info with me I'd be grateful. I've never seen a picture of anyone on my grandfather's side.

Terrell Covington Obituary (1915)

From The State newspaper of Columbia, SC
January 9, 1915

Florence, Jan. 8 – Terrell COVINGTON, an aged and most highly respected and esteemed citizen of Wadesboro, NC, died Saturday evening at an infirmary in Morganton, NC., after an illness that lasted several weeks.

Mr. COVINGTON was one of the most remarkable men of this section for he had lived here for a time. Mr. COVINGTON was in his 84th year and up to the time of the illness that ultimately caused his death, he was an active as any average citizen. Even though he was in his 84th year his features were strong and healthy and his hair was nearly as black as it was when he was in his 50th year. Mr. COVINGTON was born in Richmond county, North Carolina, and had lived in Georgia, Florida, South Carolina and of late at Wadesboro, NC. He had been twice married. His first wife was Miss Eranda CHAPELL and by this union ten children were born, eight sons and two daughters. Of this number four sons and one daughter preceded him to the grave, T. Jefferson COVINGTON, Charles M. COVINGTON, DeCarr COVINGTON, Wilson P. COVINGTON and Mrs. O.L. BASS. Those living are given below.

Mr. COVINGTON's second wife was Miss Beckie REDDY, and she with the five children by his first wife survive him, Henry L. COVINGTON of Pensacola, Robert B. COVINGTON of Jacksonville and Hampton COVINGTON of south Florida, Dr. James COVINGTON of Florence and Mrs. Robert L. EDWARDS of Darlington. Besides these there are a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as a wide circle of friends who grieve over his departure. The funeral services were held at Wadesboro Tuesday morning at the Episcopal church and were conducted by the rector, the Rev. Mr. HANFF, and the interment was made in the cemetery at that place. Owing to a wreck on the Seaboard near Morganton, NC, the funeral had to be delayed 24 hours as the body could not reach Wadesboro until late Monday night.

Taneya Koonce
NCGenWeb NC People in the Papers
http://www.ncgenweb-data.com/ncnews/details.php?nameid=8857

Carol,
I will be happy to try to help you find where your Covington's come from - in all likelihood, Richmond County, NC. If you would like to email me, you can give me the names of any of your parents, grandparents, etc., that you remember, great grands would be fantastic and where they lived - I will see what I can help you with. My spamblocker will send a little note to you to fill out, but just send it and I will add you to my mailbox. jclacoss@earthlink.net
From something I wrote for our local paper:

Covington

The records show two prominent, Eastern Shore George Washington Covingtons. They were born within four years, and died within six years, of each other.

The better-known G.W. stakes his claim on being elected twice to Congress from Maryland’s 1st Dis-trict. Born in September 1838 in Berlin in Worcester County, he was schooled at Buckingham Academy and Harvard University law school, and began practicing in Worcester County in 1861. He was a delegate to Maryland’s 1867 constitutional convention.

In the 1880 census, he was living in Snow Hill with his wife Sallie B. Soon after he was in Congress, from March 4, 1881 to March 3, 1885. A Democrat, he went back to life as a country lawyer in Snow Hill, and died in New York City April 6, 1911.

The other is “Kent’s” George Washington Covington. Born in Middletown, Del., in 1834, he became a Kent County storekeeper by way of Baltimore, and lived in Still Pond most of his long life.

According to his obituary in The Enterprise, Feb. 7, 1917, “Geo. W. Covington, a prominent druggist of Still Pond, died on Wednesday (Jan. 31) afternoon age 83 years. He was born at Middletown, Del., in 1834 and was the son of Nathaniel and Maria Covington. He came to Still Pond in 1851 and entered the store of Daniel Haines. A few years later he opened one of the best drug stores in the county. About 1861 he married Miss Helen Busick. Mr. Covington leaves three children, Miss Helen of this county; Mrs. W.L. Barnard of New York; Careton [sic] Covington, of Phila.; two children Mrs. J. Cougill Al-ston and Lester Covington are deceased.

“Funeral services were held Saturday at 11 a.m., interment in Still Pond Cemetery. He was a member of the M.E. Church. Bearers were Judge J. Harry Covington, Dr. W.E. Barnard, J. Congill [sic] Alston, Harry Busick, Howard Turner, H.C. Cacy.”

How Covington, merchant and druggist, got here is still murky. Covington is a Quaker name, and Still Pond in its early years was heavily associated with Quaker families like the Lambs and Turners.

The 1830 census shows a Nathaniel Covington, head of family in St. Georges Hundred, Del. He appar-ently moved here by 1840, since a Nathaniel Covington pops up in the census that year.

By 1850, George W. Covington, 16, and James H. Covington, 14, were living in Baltimore’s 15th Ward.

The head of household was Daniel Haines, 34, and his wife Sarah Haines, 35, both born in Delaware. Their daughter Hilda was 3.

It was a large household. Esther Haines, 21; Jane Lee, 40, black and probably a servant; and Boris (?) Lecompte, 1 year old, all born in Maryland, lived there. So did Maryland-born Henry J. Strandberg, 34, “sea captain,” and a woman who may have been a wife or sister, Susannah Strandberg, 38, born in Delaware.

Strandberg had Chestertown (Md) ties.

His father, Carl Strandberg was a prominent Chestertown resident, a baker and businessman, who in 1828 had his name changed from Charles Stanley. At the same time, Charles Stanley Jr. became Char-les Strandberg. Henry, Maria Charlotte and Eliza Stanley all became Strandbergs.

In that 1850 census, in Chestertown, elderly Carl Strandberg was living with Maria (28), Daniel (9) and Ann (5) Haines. So far the connection remains mysterious.

By 1860, the census shows George and Helen Covington in Still Pond. He is a Merchant worth $2,500, with no real estate. (The 1880 census gives 1859 as the year they married).

Living there was 18-year-old clerk Daniel Haines, the same Daniel who had been in the Strandberg Chestertown household in 1850.

Where the establishment he started in the 1850s might have been is not clear, since the 1860 Mart-enet’s map has little detail at Still Pond X Roads.

However, it shows N.T. Hynson living in what is now McDanold’s farmhouse just west of the village. It was a one-acre slice of Hynson’s land at the “cross roads” that Covington bought in March, 1862. The cost for “land and premises” was $400. From the deed it appears there was some kind of structure already.

Typical of the time, the property description reads, “Beginning at a stone set opposite the back door of the black Smith’s Shop …” There were easements on two sides for public roads.

The same deed description has carried down the years in each sale, but the Smith’s Shop and stone are long gone.

Looking into Covington’s mark on history raises another question. One of the witnesses to his 1912 will was “Hilda Hesse.” Could this be the same little Hilda who was 3 years old, living in the same house in Baltimore in 1850?
Jefferson Stone Covington and the 2 Susan Smith's?

Jefferson Stone Covington, born July 1847, married a Susan Smith (jan 1858) on July 2, 1872 in Knox Co., TN
On July 30, 1899, he again married a Susan Smith. There were 10 children born before 1899, and one daughter after the 1899 marriage. In his obituary, it states he is survived by 10 children and step-children.

Here is my problem. Susan Elizabeth 'Susie Smith was daughter of William and Mary Ann (Mason) Smith and sister of my great-great-grandfather, Joseph Mennow Smith.

One of these Susan's was a widow(?) Smith. Nothing that I have found in any information on-line has addressed the fact that Jeff married twice and that there were two Susan Smith's. How do I go about finding out which one was actually my relative? I believe the first wife died between 1897-1899 (after the birth of Ethel Effie in 1897 and before the marriage of July 1899). There is a Covington book out there.....any answers for me there? Would appreciate some guidance.

Rhonda

Does anyone know if Thomas Covington (b. 1793) and Betsy Grizzle (b 1802) had a son who would fit Richard's age range. I believe that Betsy is listed in the 1850 census with her two daughters Nancy b 1845 and Mary b 1829. Thanks so much for any help! If you need any imformation PLEASE do not hesitate to contact me at kfoster@sunflower.com or smartiepants389@yahoo.com. The latter I use more often. I have found quite a lot of imformation, and I'm trying to make a complete family tree. It's a lot harder than I had anticipated. In the .pdf file my uncle sent me, birthdates and other information is aplenty. If you do contact me, please just e-mail, as I probably won't be on this website anytime soon, and free accounts only last two weeks.

I would love to hear from you,

Kaitlyn Foster (descendent of Nathaniel Wales I)

I should clarify one pair of references, the census reports in 1860. Item 3 of my post describes a P Covington that I think is Texas Festus, living with his brother (likely named Thomas). Item 4 of my post describes who I think is his father, E S Covington, living with wife (and mother) and some other Thomas. Obviously, brother Thomas wouldn't be counted twice in such different circumstances in the same 1860 census.

opa773

Father of Potius Festus Covington (b. 1830s Tenn / d. Dallas 1927)

Hi. I descend from PF Covington.

But, it seems pretty clear to me that we have a problem establishing a bona fide ancestry line for PF Covington. Because of the census reports using initials only, it is rather ambiguous and would be easy to make a mistake with these records. I think that several public family tree owners may have picked the wrong guy, and there doesn't seem to be an alternative (to father Alfred) among tree owners. The situation is:

1. Apparently there were two guys with similar names and identical initials ("PF") at about the same time. I'll call them Texas Festus and KY Festus to make the distinction (based on where they died). KY Festus was born in Hopkins KY in 1831 of Alfred Covington; the 1850 census lists a big family of siblings to PF living at home in nearby Marshall KY where many were born. He married in 1854. In 1860, the census found him still in KY with a wife and 2 daughters. Further, he is reported by some public family trees to have lived his whole life in his home town of Marshall, KY (where he died) and didn't marry Clara Hannah Washburn. He married someone we Texans didn't expect (Martha Hastin) and he is said to have died there in 1875.

2. Texas Festus is my guy (relative) who was found with his wife (Clara Hanna) and the four girls names we expect (Emma, Mary Belle, Ruby, Cora) by the US Census in 1900 and 1910 in Justice Precinct 1, Stephens, Tarrant County, Texas. Each time the census taker asked the household when and where was Texas Festus was born, they responded that he was born in Tennessee (not Kentucky) in 1839 (not 1831). (True, he said his father was born in Kentucky, so that much fits with Alfred, but the rest of the points do not.)

There is an 1850 census report of an ES Covington, b in NC abt 1799, with a son P Covington age 12. E.S. could be the father (though not born in KY). I think that's a better candidate for our Pocius / Potius Festus/Fistus Covington.

The geography of this situation is that Covingtons lived both sides of the TN/KY border north and west of present day Nashville. A little reference to the map and geography of western Tenn and KY will help. Here are some of the place names mentioned on the source references:

•	Hopkinsville is now in Christian County of KY, near and just north of the Tenn border
•	Hopkins County borders and is north of Christian County, about a dozen miles away from Hopkinsville
•	Clarksville is in Montgomery County of Tenn, just 16 miles south of Hopkinsville; Clarksville is about 30 miles NW of Nashville.
•	Marshall KY is about 25 miles west of Hopkinsville KY at the land between the lakes; Nashville is about 80 miles away.
•	Robertson Co Tenn is just a few miles north of Nashville and east of Montgomery County.
•	Bowling Green, KY is due north of Nashville, Tenn, just across the line, about 50 miles away. (Some Covingtons migrated there, too.)

The point is that Alfred's son and our guy don't have the same characteristics. To summarize the differences:

1. about 8 years difference in birth year
2. different states at time of birth
3. said to have married different wives
4. one moved to Texas to raise his kids, one stayed at his Dad's home town in KY
5. one starts his family in his 20s, the other waits until later in life, in his 50s.

However, lots of folks on Public trees have adopted what I think is the wrong father (i.e., Alfred) for Texas Festus.

Can anyone shed persuasive light on this situation?

Bob Brantley = opa773
descendant of Texas Festus

References:
1. (for KY Festus) Kentucky Marriage Records, in Marshall Co, KY, 2 Oct 1854, B F Covington (likely P F) age 23 and born in Hopkins county KY married Martha Hastin, age 16, also of Hopkins county. These young people were born in 1831, 8 years before our Texas Festus who is said to have been born in Clarksville, Montgomery Co., Tennessee.
2. (for TX Festus) census, 1850, P Covington in family of ES Covington in Tenn.
3. (for TX Festus) census, 1860, P T (likely P F) Covington with brother T in Tenn.
4. (for TX Festus) census, 1860, E S Covington with wife and a Thos with a confusing birthdate. He likely is not the brother with whom Festus later lives.
5. (for TX Festus) census, 1880, P F Covington (age 40) still in Tenn, living with brother and his family, who includes a Rubie (niece to Festus). (Not to be confused with his daughter) (there is a likely 10 year mistake on brother's birth date)
6. (for TX Festus) census, 1900, P H (likely P F, mistranslated to P E) Covington with expected wife and children in Texas.
7. (for TX Festus) census, 1910, P Fistus (likely Festus) Covington with expected wife and family in Texas.
