Hi
I think your great grandfather is the brother of my grandmother Sussanah Ann (or Ann Sussanah) Cowen born in Carcoar NSW in 1873. She came to Western Australia as a
young woman and worked in service for a wealthy family in
Peppermint Grove where she met her husband- my grandfather-
My father didnt really know much about his mothers parents but always said they were very wealthy and that James Cowen would 'light his cigars with ten pound notes! But if this was so why did Sussanah cross the country as a young women to work as a servant. I would love to hear from you regarding what you know re James Cowen and his family
Regards Moya Miller

Marvel's maiden name was Williams which made her cousin to my father, my grandfather and Marvel where first cousins. There is a great possiblity that they may have been related through the Cowan family. I will say that the area in which the Cowan/Williams family in the 30's and 40's was mainly a melting pot area. Most families white, black, german, polish and so forth migrated to what is called the Englewood Area, so there was a mixture and confusion as to what enthinic people were. So we really don't know what race they were unless you talk to family members. I thank you for your effort though, I am merely just trying to find more info on my great-grandfather and grandfather the Williams family.

I do not think I have any info that will help you.
I am merely going on the fact that my father said he was
related to them... he died years ago and I have nothing other than that to go on. He may have been related through the
Cowan family for all I know. My Father's family came out of Illinois.. to CA during the gold rush .. their family name was Sans/Sands. Grandparents were Ray's... that is all I have for you. These families were all white and know of no relation who were black. But I suppose it's possible that there black ancestry.. There are no Williams listed on our Sans or Ray family trees.

That link supports almost everything I have found out about
Ina Ray Hutton except for a few details.. I found them on the 1920 census - Chicago cook county - ward 3.
I did not know the name of the Cowan father. That will help with my search. Also read that Bailey McFall was black or at least mullato. I believe that he was Minnie McFalls second husband (at least)
Ina Ray Hutton was said to have taken the name Ray from her Mother's (Marvel) maiden name and the name Hutton was from one of the earlier managers. My line of the family that is "supposedly" related to her are the Ray family and they came out of Missouri.. Marvel Ray was a peanist in Chicago.
But if you do a search on her that is about all it say.
I found on later census that Marvel was living in CA
with her children.. June Cowan, Later June Hutton.. real
name was also Marvel. Found that on her death notice.
There are a lot of bios and pictures under searches for Ina Ray Hutton. I hope I have been of some help to you as you have helped me.... Thank you! I quit working on this a while back, but now am inspired to start again...

I am looking for information on Benjamin Cowen born about 1834 in Poland, (I guess Polish name would have been Cohen) he and his family imigrated first to England for a very short time, then moved to America under the name Cowen. Benjamin Cowen had a falling out with his family and went to sea, changed his name to James Edward Munro/e and lived in Australia. There was an apparent family reunion and Benjamin (now known as James Munroe) returned to New York after not seeing his family for 40 years, a newspaper in NY wrote of the reunion (don't know which one). This reunion would have taken place in the 1880's. Can anyone help with information on family or the newspaper story.

The Hiram Cowen I am investigating married Joanna McClintic in Zanesville, Ohio. They later moved to Franklin Mills in Portage Co (Ohio)according to the census of 1840. By 1860 they were in Pittsburgh. His occupation was a glass blower and he did have a daughter named Margaret born 1840.

Hello,
My mothers maiden name was Cowen, her father was William Franklin Cowen. Everything I have been able to find says he was born in Sedan, New Mexico in 1918. However what I have been finding regarding his death is quite different from what I have been told. My searches say he died in May 1972. The month is right but not the year. From what I was told he died in may 1949 2 weeks before my mother Wilma was born in Ellensburg. I have seen pictures of him, and of other Ellensburg Cowens...all old, I was raised in Minnesota. Sadly I have yet to go there myself.

If any Washington Cowens or anyone who knows my grandfather could answer this post and clear this up it would be a wonderful thing. I am researching my family history and this is one interesting hiccup!

Laura Ann RANKIN b. 1847 and John P. COWAN parents of John P. COWAN/COWEN

I am looking for information on my Mom's Father's side of the family. He died when Mom was very young so we don't know much.

John Henry Cowan (1878-1934) was married to
Lydia Solomon (1876-1916) They had two children
Elmer Ershel Cowen (1905-1953) and
Nora bell Cowen (1909-2006)

Elmer Ershel Cowen (1905-1953) had seven childrem Donald Kenneth Cowen (-)
Haskel Jean Cowen (-)
Syble Jean Cowen (-)
Mary Loreen Cowen (1935-)
Bobby Jean Cowen (1937-)
Shirley Ann Cowen (1941-)
Nora Ruth Cowen (1944-)

I found a John Cowen on a census that I thought was the right place at the right time. It listed

John P. Cowan (1840-1902) and
Laura Ann Rankin (1847-) as being his parents.
More research has shown me that they had a son named
John P Cowan (1887-)
So I am afraid that I read the census wrong. Can anyone tell me if I am right or wrong?
