COX family

Hi

Looking for any information on a family headed by John COX(born @ 1786)and his wife Frances (Barterham) who moved from Northampton, Northamptonshire to Southwark, London in about 1830s.

The only information I can find is records that a person has given to the Family Search site which indicates that they were married and had their children christened at St Peter's Northampton, Northamptonshire. My 3 x Grandfather was Charles COX born in Northampton in 1821 who was also a Cordwainer/Shoemaker in Chelsea. John and Frances had that I can see 4 other children born in Northampton, Ann COX who married James Holloway and moved to Chelsea (also a Cordwainer), Daniel COX, Harriet COX and George COX who moved to South London and was a Shoemaker.

Because of the lack of Northampton records on line I am dependent on the submitted material being correct, (live in the Outer Hebrides)though census records do indicate accuracy. Both John and Frances died before the 1851 census so I have no idea where they were born.

Does any of this ring a bell, do you have a COX family from Northamptonshire who were shoemakers.

I also can not find any Frances BARTERHAM, born around the 1780 mark, name from marriage record, though this could be spelt differently.

Any help would be gratefully received, also does anyone know where I can obtain the St Peter's parish records on line or in CD format.

Regards

Debs

Hi Debs ...

The Northamptonshire Marriage Index (1700-1837) confirms the marriage that you found:

04 APR 1809 - John COX otp to Frances BARTERHAM widow at Northampton St. Peter of E

And this explains why you couldn't find any record of a "Frances BARTERHAM"!

Here's here previous marriage from the same index:

19 APR 1803 - John BARTERHAM otp to Frances SLINN otp at Northampton St. Giles of E

Hope this helps!

Penny

Thank Penny that is very helpful.

Had a quick look at Family Search but can't see a Frances SLINN from Northampton but I don't think those records are on line so I am off to have a dig about. The only one I can find is from Ranton Stafford but I think maybe to late.

Thanks again

Debs

Assuming that Frances was around 23 when she first married, I had a look on the index for SLINN marriages occurring between 1775 and 1785 (inc.) and found them in Northampton, Clay Coton and Hardingstone.

Perhaps this will give you somewhere to start searching!

further to the Rootsweb messages this may be helpful to you

Frances Slinn dtr of Joseph Slinn and Sarah Hobson was born 13 Oct 1781 and bapt 16 Apr 1784 at St Giles Northampton. Frances had a sister Elizabeth.

Joseph and Sarah were married 22 Nov 1779, I think at Hardingstone.

Good luck in your searching

Steve

You are a mind reader, I have just received in the last couple of hours the northampton parish records, found frances and Elizabeth but no marriage of Joseph Slinn their father or any baptism of Joseph.

Can I ask you how did you find the marriage I have been searching on-line for the last 2 hours, also do you know where the baptism of Hardingstone would be to see if Joseph or Sarah were born there or if they had any other children not born in Northampton.

Kind Regards

Debs

I'll need to look into this a bit more for you if I can. I have looked through Hardingstone records for that period (there's no transcript and it's not in FreeReg yet) so I'll need to dig out my notes of any Slinns there.

In case you don't know you can purchase CDs of Northants bapts and marriages - if you google them you'll find the web site I'm sure.

I am linked to the Npton St Giles Slinns but not as far as I know to the group that you have identified. I'm searching for a Thomas born about 1787 but there's no sign of him.

If you want to give me yr email that might be an easier way to communicate.
regards
Steve
