My great great great grandfather was Claiborne Cox born 1810 in NC. His wife was Frances Cox born 1820 in VA. They were slaves in alabama. Their children names were Agustas Cox, Laura Cox Lockhart, William Alexander Cox and Alfred "Push Off" Cox. After Alabama, they lived in Newton and Lake Mississippi. Alex Cox married a Nancy Rebecca Cox and they had several children. Some of their children name are Penny, William, Claiborne, George, Ernest and Mary. I know that there are a lot of African American Cox around Lake, Newton, Lawrence and Forest Mississippi and they are related to each other.

i KNOW THAT MY GREAT GREAT Great Grandfather Claiborne Cox was born in NC in 1810 and my great great great Grandmother Frances was born in VA in 1820. They were slaves in Alabama. Their children were Agustas Cox, Alfred "Push Off" Cox, Laura Cox Lockhart and William Alexander Cox. After leaving Alabama, they ended up in Newton and Lake Mississippi. I believe by Claiborne Cox being born in NC in 1810, he was probably sold as a slave to a slaveowner in Alabama and he may have left some sisters and brothers and other relatives in NC.

Alex and Rebecca daughter's was named Mary and not Nary. It may be some more children that were not mention above. Claiborne, Frances, Agustus, Laura and Alex may have been slaves on the Norris Marengo County Plantation in Alabama or hired out slaves to Hungerford Tract. During slavery and after slavery some of the spelling of the names may have been change. Like Claiborne maybe Claiborn, Frances maybe Francis, Agustas maybe Agustus or Gus, Alex may be Alexander or William Alexander. But, I do know that this set of Cox have roots to North Carolina, Alsbama and Newton and Lake Mississippi. I was told by an elder relative that during the Great Migration some of the Cox and Lockhart migrated to Louisana, Michigan, Northern States and New York

MY GRANDMOTHER NAME WAS Mary Alice Cox and she was born in Lake, MS abt 1894. Her grandparents on her paternal side were (Claiborne Cox born abt 1810 in North Carolina) and (Frances Cox born abt 1820 in Virgina). I believed they were slaves in Alabama because four of their children were born in Alabama (one child name and birth unknown, Agustas Cox abt 1851, Laura Cox abt 1854, Alexander Cox abt 1855 and Alford "Push Over" Cox abt 1860 *he was born in Newton, MS*). From Alabama they ended up living in Newton, MS. I know that Laura Cox was married to a John Lockhart in Newton, MS and some of their children were Herman, Clay, Frank and Harrison Lockhart. I know that Alexander Cox married a Nancy Rebecca Blackwell and some of their children were Margaret abt 1878, Bob abt 1883, Clay abt 1888, Alex abt 1892, Nary abt 1894, George abt 1896, Ernest abt 1900 and Joseph abt 1904 and they lived in Lake, MS. I dont know much about Agustas. I know that he was born abt 1851 in Alabama. His name maybe spell Agustus or he may have been known by "Gus" only. It may have been a possibility that he was a "Blacksmith". I donot know much about Alfred "Push Over" Cox either. His name may have been spell "Alford", but I do know that he was born and raised in Newton, MS. It was another child, I dont know what happen to him. If Claiborne Cox was born in North Carolina, I am thinking that he may have other siblings that may have been left in North Carolina or taken to Alabama with him. I donot know anything about his wife. I just know her name was Frances and she was born in Virgina. I know that Alex Cox was known by the name of William Alexnader Cox and he lived in Newton and Lake Mississippi. His wife was called Rebecca Cox but I think her birth name was Nancy Rebecca Blackwell or Nancy Rebecca Blackmon and she was born in Smith County, MS. I think she was Native American, African American and caucasian. I think her mother was probably Native American and African American and her dad was Caucasian. If you are a Cox or Lockhart from this Family, their will be a Cox Family Reunion on July 28, 2012 in Philadelphia, MS. If you have any information about Agustas Cox abt 1851, Alfred "Push Over" Cox abt 1860 or Nancy Rebecca Blackwell Cox please add it to the Cox and Lockhart Family Tree.

General Longstreet Cox

I am helping a Cox descendant. His grandfather was Moses Edward Cox, born 20 Oct 1891, died 10 May 1929, Jackson County, MO. His death certificate gave parents as General Longstreet Cox and Mary Williams. I am confused as I found Longstreet Cox with Martha on the 1900 Jackson County, MO census and Peter and Mary Cox on the same census. Moses was listed with Peter and Mary. Death certificate for General Longstreet says he was son of John and Charlotte Price Cox which agrees with census info. Have marriage info for Longstreet Cox and Mary Rickart in 1894 and Longstreet and Elizabeth Stanhope in 1927. Longstreet Cox death notice in newspaper states surived by 3 daughters, Grace, Beatrice and Margaret. Can anyone help me sort all this out? Checita

Cox family from Nebraska

I am trying to find information on my grandmother's birth mother/family. My grandmother was born in 1934, she was adopted at 3yrs old, but we have her original birth certificate. We are not sure why she was put up for adoption, we do know that her biological mother was alive at the time she was put into the adoption "home" as she would call to check in on her till she was adopted out.

On the original birth certificate the mother is listed as Dixie Cox, age at the time of birth was 24yrs placing her year of birth as either 1909 or 1910. It was also listed that Dixie was from Nebraska. My grandmother was born in California. The birth father was listed as Warren Ritchey (age 26yrs, born abt 1907/1908 in Texas). It was also listed on the birth certificate; "children born to this mother" 2 (including my grandmother). So we know there is/was another sibling out there but we do not know if that child was also placed for adoption.

We believe we found Warren and his family here on ancestry, but we're at a brick wall tying to find anything about Dixie. Any information would be super helpful.

We're tying to find family because I have a possible genetic neuromuscular disease and no one in my dad's family nor my mom's dad's family has this, so all we're left with is finding my mom's mom's/my grandmother's, side.

Again;
mother- Dixie Cox, born abt 1909/1910, age in Aug 1934 is 24yrs, profession listed as housewife (for 6yrs at time of birth)
Father- Warren Ritchey, born abt 1907/1908, age in Aug 1934 is 26yrs, profession listed as cook (for 6yrs at time of birth)

My grandmother was born Diane Ritchey and placed for adoption sometime between 1934 and 1937 when she was adopted by the Killy's.

I have no connection to this family. This appeared in the July 8, 1884 issue of the Rockland (Maine) Courier Gazette in the Men and Women column:

“Many of our people will recall Hollis M. Cox, formerly of this city, where as a young man he was a general favorite. Twenty-eight years ago he went west, and a letter received from him by W.W. Ulmer last week states that he is mining at Ely, White Pine Co., Nevada, is six feet tall, weighs 211 pounds and is prosperous. His business partner is Clay Dodge, formerly of Thomaston, and a cousin of Mrs. Ulmer and Mrs. H.F.C. Wright. George Thurlow, a former well-known Rockland boy, Mr. Cox writes, is in Yuma City, Arizona.

Death of Charles "Charlie" D Cox

I am trying to track down some information on the death of Charles "Charlie" D Cox. Charlie was born about 1873 in Texas to Walter W Cox and Victoria L Redwine. Charlie married Martha "Mary Lou" Busic in St Francis County, Arkansas in April 1897 and then died in St Francis County, Arkansas about 1899. I am trying to learn more about his death and date of death. The family story is that he died in some sort of accident.
I have ordered the films from the Stevens funeral home for that time period as well as the wills and probate film and I am awaiting their arrival.
I am also posting this on the St Francis County Arkansas boards.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Scott, Do you know Kim and Ray Sartain of Drasco, AR? They live within about 15 miles of Floral, AR. Ray is descended from Charles M. Cox also. He is the one who took his daughter and I through several gates, across pastures, on bumpy overgrown roads to the Charles M. Cox homeplace. He ( hadn't been there in many many years. He stopped and got permission to enter the private land. I had located the property of Margaret C. Cox at the time of her death and Ray knew where Charles M. Cox's farm was. Margaret's is easy to find right off off a paved road. Charles' was probably a once in a lifetime experience for me. I am so glad that Kim was able to see her great-great grandfather's place at least once. I'll send you email photos of the place. How many children did Charles M. Cox have? The picture appears to be his immediate family. Susan Emily Cox Pearce would have been just a ocuple of years younger than Charles at the time of the photo. Lets keep working this. Like John, I am now on a mission and I don't drop things easily!

Karen,
How in the world did you find the old home place? I had no idea anything still existed or where it is. I got directions to the old Pine Grove Cemetary years ago and visited it (photos posted earlier), but would have loved to seen the home site. I don't know if Susan Emily might be in that large group shot I posted earlier or not. I only know the names of those few people on the front row. I've posted another group photo here, but it is labeled Coxes and Durhams. The man on the left, smoking a pipe is Moffett Albert Cox and his wife Effie beside him, but I don't have any other IDs. I think they are all Durhams though (Effie's family). Those are the only two group shots that I have that might have Susan Emily in them, but if I ever find one I will certainly post it for you. I'll be happy to share any info I have, which isn't much I'm afraid.
--Scott

Scott, Two weeks ago while in Arkansas I had the pleasure of visiting the homeplace of Charles Moffett Cox. The barn stands, tho I don't know if it's the original. Also the foundation of the house can be found. My great grandmother was Susan Emily Cox Pearce younger sister of Charles M. Cox. I also spent too short of a time in Panola Co, MS trying to piece some Henry Bagby Cox "stuff" together. I came home with more questions than I answered. Would be happy to swap info. Karen PS I wonder if Susan Emily Cox Pearce and husband James Hollis Pearce might be in the picture you mention. I think I would recognize them as have a picture of them taken about 1920 when they were up in years.

Desr Shona,

Further to the early assumption concerning the marriage of Amy Parry to George Peacock - from the Parry's of Fulham, I'm afraid I got it wrong. An Amy Parry did marry a George Peacock but she was a widow and therefore Parry was not her birth name.

Amy Parry is registered in 1911 Census as living with her parents and siblings at 29 Barclay Road, Fulham, London, SW6. However that is the last record for her. I have seen a copy of her father's will and the only beneficiaries are her brother Edward Richard and sister Emma Elizabeth. She is not mentioned. Amy simply disappears after the 1911 census.

What I'm interested in is what happened to Amy Parry (born about 1889 in Fulham, Middlesex (now Greater London)).
My line of Cox comes our of SC. Pickens Co, Oconee Co area. I have been looking for a Marion Cox who is listed in some reunion papers in these co's in 1970's. this person says they were decended from a Marion Cox. I need to know who this Marion cox is? My line ends at Henry Cox 159-1950. Warren and Henry Cox are his sons and he has at least 5 more kids by other wives. Does your Marion have a connection to this area of SC? Is Marion male or female? Who was his father mother and siblings? Just wondering? Jim jhut132gmail.com

Chris, I have sent you some info in the past. Warren A Cox was my grandfathers full brother so we are related. I have the family on my family tree with the info you wrote here. I don't know much about them because my grandfather was taken from the family as an infant by his mother Minne Adair Cox who was Warren's mom as well and they went to Pickens Co Ga to be with her family circa 1897. Warren remained with his father Henry and his new wife Lila Brown Cox. They had at least 4 more children. I have a photo of Warren my grandfather Louis Vernon Cox. I am struggling to find anything about Henry and who his parents or siblings were. If you find any info on Henry his siblings or if you find any info on Warren please contact me. I also have info on LV and Warrens 1/2 brothers and sisters.jhut13@gmail.com

Unknown Cox father from Camden Co, NC or surrounding areas

I'm searching for the father of my great-great grandfather, Latham Wright Cox was born in 1888, his mother is the former Elizabeth Wright of Shiloh, NC. She was later known by the surname of Morris. They lived with her parents in Shiloh. Does anyone have any information on who she was presumably married to around the year 1888? considering she was married later, he may have passed away by the year 1897. He may also have been a relation to the Cox family that resided in Shiloh, but I'm having trouble locating any records of any kind for her family around that time, due to the 1890 census records being destroyed. She is recorded as living in Shiloh in 1880 and 1900.
Thanks!
