Hi Sean

I am looking for info on birthplace & marriage of Peter Coyle born abt 1813 in Ireland. I believe he came from Mayo. He subsequently moved to Northumberland, England (appears in 1851 census. He married a Mary (surname unknown, born abt 1814) in Ireland I think, and they had the following children:
John abt 1835
Martin abt 1837
Barbra abt 1838
MARY abt 1841 (Grtgrt....grandparent of mine)
Peter abt 1845
Michael abt 1849

Mary (daughter, who I believe was born in Ireland although there is some confusion in different English census returns, married a Michael Convey (another Irish string which I have to follow up!) in Gateshead in 1857.

I know nothing about Mayo other than where it is and the fact that family history research in Ireland is difficult so would welcome any information you could pass on.

Regards
John Thompson
Hello Patricia
Just wondering whether you got the photos & info I sent - I understand you had computer problems and I've not heard from you since. Perhaps I inundated you a bit too much - if so, sorry! Thanks for all the interesting info you sent me.
We are looking forward to meeting you and any other members of the family who are interested, if you can make it later in the month.
If not, it would still be nice to keep in touch now & again.
Amitiés
Brenda
Hi Nancy: Yes, we are related. I'm Tommy Coyle's daughter Mary and Mildred Twaskas was my cousin. Her Mom was Anna Coyle. Mildred's daughter Laura Byrne and I worked on family history several years ago before she moved to Texas. I have included the Twaskas family in my family tree - Coyle Family Tree. In fact, I still have more info to add to it. It's rather time consuming especially when I keep going off in different directions with all parts of the family. Take care.

Mary

Hello,
It's absolutely great to hear from you!
My great grandmother Elizabeth (Lizzie) was your grandad Joseph's sister.
Lizzie had an illegitimate son John Francis Coyle born 1897 - my grandad John. His son John Francis (Frank) was my dad.
I've tried to unravel the Coyle family and to find out where they came from in Donegal but I haven't been able to find out exactly where.
Just before my dad died we went to Ireland (me, my husband and my mam and dad) and toured round Donegal which me and my dad loved. To us it was the nicest part of Ireland. It would have been great to go to the exact place they came from but despite many years of trying I haven't been able to find the parish. But I'm still trying!
Am I right in thinking that Joseph was married to Margaret Ann Ripley and they had a son Allan? Is Allan your father?
I would love to know more about your side of the Coyle family and to see your photos would be amazing.
I've "invited" you to see my Coyle tree.
I'm really looking forward to hearing from you.

My email address is patriciahandy@btinternet.com
Regards, Patricia

Fred,

All of us have been dead-ending at Mainos Dawson Coyle -- like the Coyle line sprang fully-formed from the SC soil with no ancestors! John Coyle and I have talked about how to go about finding additional information -- we believe it is quite possible that some of the numerous descendants of M D Coyle still in the Gaffney area may have clues. I have concentrated my recent efforts on working forward from M D Coyle to find living descendants and figure out what branch they belong to on the tree (have discovered MANY cousins along the way!); maybe eventually I can make their acquaintance and find out something about our elusive forefather. If you would like, you can send me your email addy in a private message, and I will invite you to my ancestry.com tree -- I am descended from MDF's brother, E G Coyle. E G was the family vagabond, it appears -- he left for Oklahoma in 1880.

Kind regards,
Chris Coyle

John,
Your information is correct about Walter Coyle, my grandfather. His father was Mainos Dawson Franklin Coyle to be distinguished from his father who was named Mainos Dawson Coyle. M. D. F. Coyle had 5 sons 5 daughters. The brothers were James, Edgar, Walter, Robert(born 1883) and Ben.
I have been trying without success to trace my ancestry beyond Mainos Dawson Coyle (born 1799 in South Carolina).
Fred Coyle

Thanks for replying. Yes, I know about the " naming patterns " used in the 1800's and I know I've found that the families that were having children at the tail end of the 19th century and begining of the 20th tended to name the first born son after themself and the second after the paternal Grandfather.
I did a quick search for both Rose Callery and Edward Coyle births about 1847 & 1841 at rootsireland.ie, this is what I found.
Between 1836 - 1846 they had 11 records for an Edward Coyle, none from Donegal. That doesn't mean that your Uncle is wrong. Just so you know as of right now Donegal has no historical society or archives on any level but I think I still have the email address for a girl who may be able to help if you ever want to look into further.
There is an 1841 birth in Co. Monaghan,
1838,1844,1840 in Cavan
1842 in Tyrone
1846 in Kildare
1840 in Leitrim
1843 in Laois
1840,1838 in Longford
1845 in Roscommon
I did a little wider search for Rose as my initial one only came up with one
Rose Kellery born in 1850 in Meath but from 1837-1857 garnered four the one I listed and these three:
1854, Rose Callery in Meath and Roseanne Callery in Cavan. This could very well be the same birth as some parishes in E. Cavan could share parishes with Meath thus the record gets recorded in both counties.
1839, in Louth a Rose Sellery.
I did get the index for Roseanne Callery in Cavan
Born: 7/16/1854 Parish: Killeshandra Roman Catholic
Father: Patrick Mother: Catherine Masterson
Sponsers: Patrick Mulligan & Catherine Callery.

Killeshandra, is in the Northwest corner of Cavan not far from their boarder with Leitrim a good distance from Crosserlough but again maybe the family moved to Crosserlough. It looks as if both my GG Grandparents were not born in this area but moved there at some point before September 1858 and keep in mind that one in Meath could very well be in a Parish Cavan and Meath share and the area is just south of where the parish of Crosserlough is.

Good luck in your search and be well, Danielle

Your list of children show Peter as the oldest and Edward as one of the youngest. It was common practice for the first son to be named after the grandfather.
This is shown in my family. ggg grandfather Michael, gg grandfather Edward, g grandfather Micheal, grandfather Edward, and then it changed. lol. Grandfather Edward Coyle's first born son was also Edward and died young. Did name another son Michael. He died in his twenties.

Do these dates match anything you have. I would very much like to talk with you. Do you live in Gaffney? I live in Denver,NC, just outside Charlotte.
I'm intrigued with your Hartye/Coyle/Brooklyn connection. As far as I know, my COYLE family came from Ireland to NYC/NJ @1865. My g-g-grandparents, Mary COYLE (b. @1845 parents: Denis and Mary)and Michael MCDONALD (b. @1841), had their first son, Joseph Francis (b. Sept 1867 in W. Orange Twp, NJ). The godparents were Candy (John or James?) and Julia HARTY. A few years later, the family moved to Manhattan. Family stories lead us to believe that there was family (Coyle or McDonald) who lived in Brooklyn, NY @ 1900. Any connection?

Theresa, I am re-reading all these Coyle messages that started with Ellen quite some time ago. I discovered that my Grandfather, William J. Carroll, Sr. went to school at St. Elizabeth's because he lived in that parish and his mom was Annie Gertrude Coyle Carroll. I need to try to find his address when they lived in that parish. I am sorry I've been delayed in looking for more information as my mom is very ill and has been in and out of the hospital twice since the week before Christmas. She just came back home from the hospital last evening and life is very busy with all I need to do for her. I'm pretty sure my Grandfather, his parents and siblings all lived on Jefferson, too. Hopefully I can look this info. up and get back to you before another disaster takes place... Pat (Carroll) Bennett

Hello, was EDWARD born in Donegal but went to work and met Rose out of the county? As for getting married in Cavan in Ireland you normally married in the brides parish..though perhaps Edward and Rose just worked in this county and then Married there. In the 1800's you travelled to where you found work and sometimes never got home to your own county for years.
Just a few ideals...do you have a townland name or any place names and this would help you tie down the county...the Coyle name is very popular around Donegal. Good Luck.
