I just now saw this. We were looking for you last week. If you can call me my phone number is 618-806-6600. We were trying to find the graves for Edward And Jennie. Evidently they are unmarked. My brother lives in Doe Run and would like to meet with you to see if we can all compare notes and maybe get somewhere on this line of Craddocks. Hope you get this soon.

Teresa Fish

Botetourt Co VA

I recently found a deed in Botetourt records executed on 1 April 1805 between William Craddock and Elizabeth Watkins.

The wording is unlike any indenture I've ever seen.

For "forty pounds ten shillings" William sells "his plantation of 70 acres or so" and "all his personal estate in his possession" because he is indebted to her and "she is to continue living on the premises as she has usually done."

There is no description of the land, whose land it borders, or any mention of heirs.

Directly below this transaction, on 1 May 1805, Elizabeth Watkins transfers the land to two of William's daughters, Peggy and Nancy Craddock.

Had he died in the interim? I know he is dead by 1806, because Nancy marries William Little and her father is noted as deceased. However, I've found no record of William Craddock's death date or burial place.

There are later depositions about the property (72 acres), but they do not explain the relationship between William Craddock and Elizabeth Watkins. I don't know where William came from before he appears on Botetourt reords at the creation of the county.

This deed is not included in any published abstracts I've seen.

William Craddock's daughter Elizabeth marries James Little in 1786. Their daughter Mary Little marries Absalom Craddock Watkins--they are my third great-grandparents.

I think the Elizabeth Watkins in the land transaction is connected to Absalom Craddock Watkins (best case scenario would be his mother, but I may be dreaming), but I don't know of any records to assist with that.

If any of you out there know of any records that exist to shed more light on this strange transaction and the people involved, I would greatly appreciate it.

I should mention that Absalom's Y-DNA does not match that of the other Watkins documented in Botetourt Co. He is in fact related to the Watkins in King and Queen Co, VA. Discovering that was a big leap forward; bridging the gap between Botetourt and King and Queen would be close to a miracle.

Thank you for any help you might provide.

Lee Simons

I have in my notes that it is believed that this John Craddock was a veteran of the Battle of San Jacinto.

http://www.sanjacinto-museum.org/Herzstein_Library/Veteran_B...

CRADDOCK, JOHN ROBERT

Born in Prince Edward County, Virginia, October 15, 1812 but was raised in Kentucky. In the Headright Certificate issued to him February 3, 1838 for one-third of a league of land by the Milam County Board it is stated that he came to Texas in December, 1833. He was a member of Captain William W. Hill's Company at San Jacinto and on October 27, 1838 was issued Donation Certificate No. 575 for 640 acres of land for having participated in the battle. On May 17, 1838 he received Bounty Certificate No. 3424 for 320 acres of land for having served in the army from March 1 to June 1, 1836. On an original roll of Captain Hill's Company at Muster April 11, 1836 the following information concerning Mr. Craddook is given: He was recruited at Tenoxtitlan March 10, 1836 (instead of March 1, as shown in the Bounty Certificate) by John Gafford. He was five feet ten inches in height; of fair complexion with blue eyes and light hair. By vocation he was a farmer.

Mr. Craddock reenlisted in the army July 25, 1836, as first sergeant in Captain John Hart's company. On January 8, 1840 he was issued Bounty Certificate No. 9392 for 320 acres of land for having served in the army from July 25 to November 25, 1836. On September 11, 1836 he enlisted in Captain Calvin Boale's company of rangers. The Secret Journal of the (Texas) Senate, page 57, shows that on May 31, 1837 President Houston nominated Mr. Craddock for captaincy of a company of mounted Gun Men for duty in Red River County, in a regiment to be commanded by Colonel Joseph Bennett. The Senate confirmed the nomination the same day.

Captain Craddock was married to Amanda Childers, second daughter of Golsby Childers. Captain Craddock died August 19, 1891 while a member of the Texas Veterans Association. Mrs. Craddock, born June 1, 1824 died March 31, 1900. Husband and wife are buried in the Craddock family cemetery, five miles south of Rogers, Bell County in marked graves.

Children of Captain and Mrs. Craddock, were Ann, who married J. A. Weathersbee; Margaret, who married John Parker; Jennie, who married Benjamin Hunt; Emily, who married J. R. Williams; Amanda, who married John F. Cayton; Belle, who married Tom Treadwell; Thomas Jefferson, who died in childhood; John, who died unmarried at the age of twenty-one; Sam Houston, who married Addie Jackson; William A., who married Florence Punchard; Gabriel J., who married Callie Barnhart; and Rilla, twin to Gabriel J., who married William Lewis.

Written by Louis W. Kemp, between 1930 and 1952. Please note that typographical and factual errors have not been corrected from the original sketches. The biographies have been scanned from the original typescripts, a process that sometimes allows for mistakes in the new text. Researchers should verify the accuracy of the texts' contents through other sources before quoting in publications. Additional information on the veteran may be available in the Herzstein Library.

No unfortunately I don't. He was my Mothers Father and she passed away when I was only 2 years old. I was raised by my Father's Mother and didn't spend a lot of time with my Mother's side except, with my Great Uncle Fred who was Sid's brother his name was Frederick Marshall and they also had brothers named Alfred and Edward and I believe Alfred was the oldest and It may be that he was named after his Father but I'm not sure. I wish I had asked more questions while he was living because he loved to talk and I was too young and foolish to appreciate what a great resource of information he was. I do remember him talking about their family farming around Delta, Mo. when he was young. I am only going to be on Ancestry for another day just the free trial! My e-mail address is crawfordyvonnal@gmail.com if you would like to communicate any more.

Thank You,
Yvonna

I also had Craddock's in MO in the late 1800's. Mine were in Dade County and originated in VA (via TN, where I believe your Sidney was born according to the 1920 census). There's likely a link in there somewhere. Do you have anything further back on your line before Sidney?

Ken

My maternal grandfather was Sidney Craddock. I used to live with my great uncle, Fred Craddock, his brother. I also knew my great uncle Edward for a short time before he passed away. My grandfather Sid was married to my Granny, Silvia May Patterson Craddock, and they had 5 children, Ruben James; Genevieve; Sidney Jr.; my Mother, Wanda "Louise" Craddock Lemons; and Uncle Lonnie who died in the Korean war at the age of 18. I don't know a lot about my mother's side of the family. She died of cancer in 1961 when I was only 2 years old and my paternal Grandmother raised me. When I was 5 years old my paternal Grandfather, Manuel Lemons passed away leaving my Grandmother Stella Jane Lemons a widow. Sometime around that same time my Great Uncle Fred's wife, Aunt Edna, passed away also. A couple of years later, after numerous communications and a few visits, my Grandma Stella and my Uncle Fred were married and he moved in with us. I used to like to watch peoples reactions when I would tell them my Grandma married my Uncle. After watching the look on their faces I would let them know they weren't related but were from opposite side of my family. I cant remember exactly when my Grandpa Sid passed away but I know it was before Granny did and that she outlived all but 1 of her children. She was 106 when she died sometime in the late 80s or early 90s. I think maybe 1990 but not sure. None of us knew exactly how old she was until after her death my Dad got out my Moms Family Bible and her birthday was listed in it and she was 106 at her death. I don't know how she lived that long because from all accounts she had a very hard life. If you know anything else please let me know. I would like to find out more. All I know about my Granny is that her maiden name was Patterson and her Mother was full blooded Native American, possibly Cherokee. I would like to find out more about her and any connection to the Trail of Tears.

Thanks,
Yvonna Louise Lemons Crawford

No, I'm sorry...I've looked thru all my Craddock's. I found a Florence Craddock b. 1879, but was married to a Robertson and no brother named Wilson? This whole family lived in the Cainsville (Wilson Co.), Milton (Rutherford Co), area...I'm sure they were related? I'll keep my eyes peeled.

Hey everyone! I am trying to research my paternal line, and I cannot get past my great-grandfather J.B. Craddock. My grandfather has passed away and never spoke of his father (it was a contentious relationship). In fact we don't even know what the J and B stand for. I know he lived in northern Florida and Henry County Alabama at one point. He was married to Willie Belle and fathered Shirley Craddock and Robert Craddock. Any thoughts on a direction I could head? Thanks!

Mrs. Robert H. Craddock Injured

From the Morning Oregonian - April 29, 1929

Mrs. Craddock Injured: Police Inspector Bruised when Auto Overturns Near Newberg

Mrs. Robert H. Craddock, wife of Inspector Craddock was injured seriously and Inspector Craddock was bruised when his automobile left the pavement two miles north of Newberg last night and turned turtle. The accident occurred when an unidentified driver suddenly halted his machine without signaling. The Craddock car skidded off the pavement when he endeavored to avoid a collision. Passing autoists rescued the couple, who were pinned under the car, and took them to a nearby farm, where first aid was administered and a physician summoned. They were brought to Portland later.
