Cragg/Asling

I am trying to find out what happened to Mary Ann Cragg. She was the daughter of Edward and Sarah Cragg and was born in 1866. InFeb.1882, age 16, she married George Asling but from what I can determine, she had a child a month before this. I can find no further mention of her and assume she died, although I cannot find a death document either. Georgeg remarried several years later and the child is not mentioned as part of his family. Edward and Sarah appear to have moved to Bruce or Grey Cnty. Did they then move on to Michigan with their granddaughter? I have a Margaret May Asling, d/o George Asling and Mary Ann Cragg, marrying Roy Leighton in 1903 in Bear Lake MI. They had a number of children. Anyone have answers to these puzzles? May Ann's supposed death and how Margaret got to Michigan? I know her father never left Ontario. Pat Asling

Hello Lee, a bit of drama here with floods, power outages etc today. I have linked up a few records on my listing for Margaret & Francis Henry Hayes, with birth & marriage records and a possible match for Voters registration in Bega ( a bit unsure about that one). Also 2 children Frances Henry Hayes (see Voters records) (same name as his father) and Edith M Hayes (I think she will probably be "Margaret" after her mother). Have a look at my "Craig (Cragg)" tree for the links. I have Henry's death certificate but would really like the copies of the other docs. Have you attached them to your listing on line? If not, my email is njb@pobox.com and we can exchange addresses etc. Just had a call from Ann Nash in Perth today who is a descendent of Euphemia (Effie)Craig - daughter of Walter Craig & Elizabeth Sadler. regards Lindsay

Hello Lee, Just getting the hang of this, but my Craig(Cragg) family tree has these details. Henry Cragg was was my great, great grandfather, his son Alexander my great grandfather, and his son Harold my grandfather. Looks like Henry married Mary Anne Geddes at Gretna Green. The whole family arrived in Australia aboard the Parsee on 14Sep1859. Links available for these on the system. regards Lindsay Smith.

Hi David, I hope you are still using this site, I was wondering how far back your English Craggs go, I have 2 Loves , William m. Elizabeth Cragg and his sister Mary Jane Love m. David Cragg. I would appreciate any information you may have regarding these names. Willam and M.Jane were siblings to my Gr. Grandfather James A. Love. Their Father was Thomas and I cant find much on him aside from his name and that he lived in England... not sure if he came to Canada with his children or confirmation on his wifes name. But I do know that the Cragg name intersects with the Gibson line. They are my family as well, Rachel S. Gibson was daughter inlaw to James A. Love, married to George Love.
you can email me at musicd1960@gmail.com Thanks Rachel Hagen

Hi Janice!

I believe that the son to whom you refer is Ronald, who married Isabelle. I only remember one child, Ronnie (M); but I was very VERY young! The last I saw Ron and Isabelle was for Granddad's (George's) funeral....I was 10.

My dad (Jeff) married my mom (Catherine McLean) in December 1965.

I have 2 brothers, Brian Edward (May 1967) and Darrel Andrew(January 1970) Brian is neither married, nor has children.

Darrel married Angela (I'm sorry, I don't have the date or her maiden name at hand). They are still married, and have two beautiful girls: Maria and Anna. Again, apologies, as the dates of birth escape my addled mind at the moment.

I married October 1983 (Henry Percy MacDonald) and have 2 sons, Douglas Jeffrey (May 1985) and Jason Andrew (October 1988). Henry and I divorced September 1989. Neither of my boys are married or have children. I have never remarried.

I hope this information helps you to fill in some of the "leaves", and if I can provide anything else, please let me know.

Thanks again for Joani's email address! and I'm glad that she was able to show you both a good time, and some interesting sites while you were in Victoria.

Take good care!
Sheryl

Hi Sheryl

I was pleased to read that at long last you are able to get back in touch with Joani.

When Mick and I came over last year we met Joani for the very first time. Joani drove to our Hotel in Victoria and then took the 2 of us to various places, plus the house that Uncle George actually built himself for his family, and that was great to be able to see the home that they lived in at long last.

I have got some details of the Canadian side of our family, I am aware that one of Uncle Georges sons married someone from Dartmouth and they are buried in one of the graveyards in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

I wonder if you would be kind enough to forward onto me the details of your parents etc, so that I can put them onto the Cragg tree, I have got people on my own family tree (maiden name) who have been mamrried 2 or 3 times and I like to put has many people onto the tree where it is possible, just ask Joani for my email address she knows my own home email address.

Well Sheryl I will have to close now and go and get a bit more of my family tree done, I am not just doing the Cragg family tree, I am also doing my sides family tree.

Take care

Janice

Joani and I lost touch after my father passed, so it will be nice to chat with her again.

I understand the many leaves of trees....my ex-husband is one of 5 sons, of 1 of 11 sons, and many had their surnames misspelled at birth (Mc vs Mac) so, it's difficult to sort all that mess out as well.

Good luck with your endeavours, and again...thank you very much.

Best wishes,
Sheryl

I am loking for the grand children of my husbands late Uncle George Cragg who lived in Oak Bay, Victoria, along with his wife and three sons until his death in September 1974, his wife died in 1935 aged 45

I am in contact with one of Uncle Georges grand daughters, so it would be nice if I could find some more of our family in Canada.
It's been nearly a year since I've posted this. I'm seeking information on a Harry Cragg who married a Francis A. Robinson in 1866, Iowa, Webster Co. She was born about 1842 in Indiana and is with her parents on 1850 census, Fountain Co., IN. I have yet to find her in any census or index after 1850 and do not even know if the wife of this Harry Cragg is the Francis A. Robinson of 1850 Indiana.
I do believe that your George and Elizabeth and mine are indeed the same. Their three boys were Ronald, William, and Jeffery; there was also a girl who passed in infancy. As I recall, Ron was married to Isabel, William was married to Anne, and Jeffery, my father, was married twice. The first time to Joan, (as I recall, the two were childhood friends and grew up together) who brought one child (William) into the marriage with her. They then had two more children, Barry Jeffery, and Joan Ruby Elizabeth. Jeffery's second wife, Catherine, is my mother. They were married in December, 1965 and had three children, myself the eldest born in 1965, and my brothers Brian, born in 1967 and Darrel born in 1970. I hope this information is helpful!

I may have respondd to this since zjuly 2009.

The link to the CRAGG family goes back to Hannah Mary CRAGG b 1870 in Boston, Lincolnshire to Thomas & Frances Ann (nee GODLEY) CRAGG. They had 3 or 4+ children other than Hannah.

Hannah was married twice. Firstly to BROOKS then to my Gt Grandfather John Walter DAVISON of Donington in Sept 1899. They had a daughter Alice May (my grandmother) who married in about 1923/4 James Henry HOLMES

Hi Peter,
Good news and bad news.
I have further information but.... we have been unable to attach your branch to our tree (although it must do somewhere).
I didn't know Frances Ann's surname or birth date/place - thanks.
Thomas and Frances Ann had Kate Ellen (1866), Fanny (1868) Hannah Mary (1869), Herbert Horace (1877) and Charlotte Adeline (1880). There may be more as the 8 year gap between Hannah and Herbert looks a little strange.
Thomas's parents were Thomas (b. 1779 Alkborough) a labourer and Sarah Briggs (no details) married 1825 Grainsby. Their children were Charlotte Borril (1826), (Thomas 1827? - a possibility, and if true an early death), William (1833), Thomas (1835), Ann (1835) and Edward (1837).
You may think Thomas (1779) had these children rather late in life (he was 47 when first child Charlotte arrived) and that is because Sarah was his second wife. previously he had married Ann Appleyard (d. 1822 Salmonby) in 1802 at Scartho.
With Ann he had Ann (1803-1803), David (1804), Appleyard (1805), Elizabeth (1806) and James (1808). I only have further details for two of these; James moved to USA and Appleyard moved to Canada.
The parents of Thomas (1779) were James (no further details) and Elizabeth (Sharpley?) (no further details). Their children were John (1777), Thomas (1779), James (1783-1862) and Judith (1794).
This is where the trail goes cold. I haven't yet managed to connect James to the rest of our tree.
Hope this all helps.
Cheers
Barry

G'day, Thanks for your reply it sounds quite promising. My GG grandmother was Hannah Mary CRAGG b about 2nd qtr 1867 or 1871 in Boston , Lincolnshire. She was the daughter of Thomas CRAGG b 1835 in Salmonby, Lincolnshire & Frances Ann GODLEY b 1841 in Bicker, Lincolnshire. her siblings were Herbert H & Kate Ellen (CRAGG). She first married John BROOKs in about 1894. Then John Walter DAVISON 12 Sept 1899 & in 1899 they had Alice May DAVISON in 1900. As far as I know we have no connection with either the Lancashire/Liverpool group or the Yorkshire/Tyneside group.
I have over 3000 Cragg members going back to around 1500 if you are interested. Although I don't recall a Holmes, anything after the 1891 census can be a little vague - and did your relative marry a female Cragg?

It was some sort of marriage like that I was looking for in my line but there do not seem to be any going back another two generations, unless there was a first wife who died young.
Thanks anyway for the response. -Martin

Joshua Cragg (1700-1747) of Over Tabley, Cheshire

I found the following un-indexed parish register entries which may of interest to some:

Lower Peover St Oswald:
Joshua son of Richard Cragg bap 13 Dec. 1700.

Rostherne St Mary:
1729, Feb 3(Old Style) Joshua Cragg of Over Peover, husbandman and Ellen Becket of the same, spinster, were published & married by Mr Leigh(?).

Joshua's will dated 3 May 1747 (Over Tabley) names sons Richard, Joshua, Thomas and John and daughter Mary Cragg. They were all under 21 at that time, Richard being the eldest son. Thomas and Ralph Becket were executors. With the possible exception of Richard and Mary, who may be on IGI, I have not found any baptismal data for the other sons, so there may be someone's missing link here. (Brothers Joshua jnr. & Thomas offer contemporary alternatives to those on IGI listed as sons of Samuel.)
Joshua was interred 20 Jan 1747 (Old Style) aged 47, followed by Ellen who was interred 21 Jul 1750 aged 41. Their grave can still be seen on the other side of the path; almost opposite the door to St Oswalds church at Lower Peover and next to the Grave of Richard Cragg who died 25 March 1743 aged 65 years - presumably Joshua's father.
Hope that is interest to someone.
-Martin Allen Cragg

Hi Erik,
I have been watching this thread passively because my Cragg family has have been in cheshire for at least 250y. However the ALLEN middle names you quote allerted me to a possible connection. Do you know why your ancestors had this middle name? My middle name is also Allen and this has been handed down several branches of the family as a forename since at least 1776. I've tried to find a CRAGG-ALLEN marriage in order to explain this but all I came up with was an ALLEN male - CRAGG female marriage in Nottinghamshire area. This seems the wrong way round for the perpetuation of a maiden name. I also found a bequest in the 1727 will of Richard CRAGG of Little Warford to Elizabeth ALLEN, wife of Joseph ALLEN of Chelford, but again this seems to be the wrong way round. ALLEN is a relatively abundant surname in Cheshire so all these may be red herrings but there could be an early common origin in Westmoreland.
I look forward to hearing your thoughts.
- Martin Allen Cragg,
Cheshire
My great-grandfather, Edward Allen Cragg,s brother, Samuel Allen Cragg, died and was buried at Radcliffe on Trent in 1901. Another brother who I have no info on, was Robert. They were all born in Kendal, Westmoreland, in the 1820s.Another brother, who died in infancy, was named George. Both Robert and George were family names going back several generations. Do you think there might be a connection!?
Erik Cragg

Hi Joani

This is the third attempt of getting my personal email address to you but it seems that when i put in my personal one it just throws the message back to me,so it seems that it is a case of emailing each other at the momment via this site.

I like yourself would like to be in contact with you via email that is what I have put in on the last 3 messages to you, but like I have stated it is bringing it up that I have got a message only to find out it is the one i have done the day before to you with the personal email address details, now I can start and sort out some of the things that I have got for you and then send them on to you.

Elsie Wardle has helped me out a lot and she has also told me that one of the family lives in Kamloops and someone else in another part of Victoria, so if it is ok with you I will ask Elsie for your home address then I can forward the documents to your address in Canada.

Elsie is the daughter of Nellie Cragg and Mick (Michael my husband) is the son of Robert Bertram Cragg both of them was born in a small village called Flawborough, Nottingham, Nellie in 1900 Bert in 1903.

Well Joani I wil have to close now and go and get the shopping done.

Speak to yo soon.

Janice
