Hi M, We are cousins. However, Isaiah son of Isaac and Ann Hank Crain died as an infant at about 1 year of age, and is buried at their side in Tabernacle Cemetery. Isaiah B. Crain son of Hannah (never married, daughter of Isaac and Ann) lived to adulthood. Isaiah B. Crain married Rebecca Scott. They were the parents of Sydney Crain who married Anna Marie Simpson. Mahlon Crain, their son, your papa is my second cousin, once removed, so you are my second cousin twice removed, or my third cousin. Currently the path ends with John Crain and Lydia Carmelia in terms of readily available records. I suspect John Crain is related to the Mannahawkin Crain's since I've noted him involved in land records with them. I strongly believe that Lydia Carmelia is the sister of Anthony Carmelia of Tabernacle. But proving all this is tough. But I will continue to look. I will invite you to my tree on ancestry. Warm regards from your cousin, Mary

I'd love to know more about my family line as well as share what I have with others. The "oldest" Crain/Crane I have is Bartley born in Tennessee about 1814, Wife Mahala Awalt born 1815,TN. Fifteen children, including Marquis Lafayette, William C., John Franklin, Martha Jane, Balis, and ten others. I am from Marquis, his son William, his son Marcus (confusing, yes) his son John, and his son Marion. I am seeking information on Bartley's parents.

We also found a Charles Crane in the military rolls in the Rev. War along with Elias and John Crane which are family names that have been passed down thru the years, but can find anything concrete. John & Sally's daughter Isabella b.1802 married her first-cousin Andrew Crain b.1805 Corkhill and emigrated to Australia 1844.
Their son, Robert married Letitia Mary Gossey
Robert & Letitia had a daughter, Ellen b.1862 who married Edward William Baker in 1883 and went to San Francisco in 1903.
Ellen's eldest daughter Minnie b.1884 married W.L.Carr whose daughter, Dorothy Dehr made contact with the Australian Branch in 1980s.

Robert & Letitia also had a son, William Henry, who changed his spelling to CRAYN, and married Eliza Reid. They had a daughter Pearl who married Paul Shebick and moved to San Francisco.

Are you descended from any of these people or their siblings? Would love to renew contact with our lost cousins - we have lots to share.
I do believe John is Joel's son, VA is very close to Warrenton and Joel had family living in Charlotte VA. There were Crain's living in Pittsylvania County, VA at the time of his birth, but I've found nothing to tie him to them. Mary John's wife is a distant relative of mine, she has to be from Henry or Pittsylvania County in Virginia but her parents haven't been determined yet. Samuel Crain a cousin of Johns married a Elizabeth DeLozier from the same area Mary is from, she is probably Mary's sister. Samuel is from Charlotte, Virginia which is just NE of Pittsylvania County, VA, I have seen 1812 war records with Samuel and John on it, I believe they knew each other. This could explain how they both ended up in Hardeman County, TN and married the Delozier girls. Samuel took his family to Trigg KY and John on to Texas. I am going to the Bassett Historical Society this summer, they have history on the area, I'll see what I can dig up. Warrenton is not that far from Charlotte. It wouldn't suprise me if these two Crain families were close.

Clarissa's husband John is my 3rd great-grand uncle, his siter, Nancy is my 3rd great-grandmother.
Nancy married William Blakemore Crain, my line from there is through their son, Lewis Wesley Crain who married Amanda Priscilla Hampton. Their daughter, Florence Ellen Crain, married William Thomas Calvert. Their daughter, Faymel Calvert, married Carl Leaford Priddy. Their daughter, Sarah Ellen Priddy, married Jack Eugene Drury. I am their daughter, Mary Drury Walzer.
What really peaked my interest, is the Wood surname. My 3rd great-grandfather, Pettus Priddy married Mary (Polly) Wood and she is the one that is supposed to have been part Cherokee. They came to Williamson County at about the time of the "Trail of Tears". My Mom & all of her cousins were told this by their parents & they are adamant that it is true. I have never been able to find anything to confirm it. Mary's parents were Richard Wood & Elizabeth Priddy, but I don't know who their parents were. He is however a descendant of William Wood, "Our Time in History this Wood Family" Author: James Suddath Paget, Jr. because Pettes & Mary & Richard are named in the book. I haven't purchased it, it is $80.00. Elizabeth was related to Pettus but I don't know how. There are many Wood/Priddy marriages in my family. The Wood's & Priddy's all came from England originally and settled in the VA and later NC area. The Crain's are harder to trace back, because no one has been able to determine for sure who Spencer & Jasper Crain's parents were. They came to Williamson CO in the very late 1700's or very early 1800's. They too originated in VA and settled in NC & TN before coming to Williamson CO. It is said there were five brothers, but only the two came to IL. Spencer's wife Hannah Blakemore-Smith is said to have been an Indian. If you would like to share further iformation, you may e-mail me at mwalzerneedru@att.net.

Did some reading just now. Bio of John Crain you are talking about states that he was born in 1793 in Virginia. If this statement is true then he is not the son of Joel. In 1793 Joel and family were in Wilkes County, Georgia where he would stay until about 1806. He then moved on to White County, Tennessee. In 1807 Warren County was formed out of White County, Joel has land transactions in Warren County in 1808. He and family then moved on to Hardeman County, Tennessee. The bio also states that said John Crain was a childhood friend of Sam Houston, who was also born in Virginia. If Sam was in Virginia and Joel and family were in Georgia I don't see how that was possible. Now in 1807 Sam's family moved to Blount, Tennessee but that was still about 150 miles from where Joel and family were in Warren, Tennessee (maybe true but unlikely).

I'm just not convinced that this John Crain was the son of Joel.

Randy Crain

Very much appreciate the responses.

I received information a few years ago (from someone claiming to be a descendant) that Nathaniel's father was Hiram H. Crain, born 1815 Ky., and his mother was Susanna Mathes, born 14 Jan 1836, Tn. There is a Hiram H. Crane, in 1850 enumerated in Leon county, Leon, Texas born 1815, Ky. Wife: Mary A.

He's still there in the 1860 Census for Leon County and last appears in the 1870 Texas Census, County unknown with a new wife: Susanna,36 yrs, Children: William 20 yrs, Renaldo 17 yrs, Mary 12 yrs, Rebacca 10 yrs, Martha 8 yrs, Nolan 3 yrs, & Anna 2 yrs.

Clearly, there is no Nathaniel Crane shown in this family by 1870. Assuming his 1868 birth year is correct, he should have been there.

Does anyone know who this Hiram H. Crane's father was? Is he connected to this same family, out of Tennessee/Va.?

I do find John H. Crane in the 1850 Census for Bexar County, Texas, in the home of William Ware, 49yrs - an apparent widower. Along with eight Ware children, the following Cranes are shown: Narcisy, 21yrs, John H., 14 yrs, and William A., 11 yrs.

The last census I found him in is the 1880 Census for Gonzales County:

Name: Jno. H. Crane, Residence: Gonzales, Texas, Birthdate:
1836, Birthplace: Texas, Father and Mother's Birthplace: Tennessee. Martial Status: Widowed Age: 44 years, Occupation: Farmer

Children: Mary A. 24 yrs., Nat Benton 14yrs, Susan E. 9yrs, & James H. 6yrs.

John H. Crane had a rough start in life, and since his dad John died in 1839, then 10 years later in 1849 his mother, Mary Ann Delozier, died, the Crane children shown in the 1850 census are orphans. Is anyone aware of a relationship with the William Ware they're living with in 1850? His bad luck continued, as he was widowed at the age of 40.

Does anyone have any details on the death of Martha Elizabeth Jones?

I'm also curious as to why Mary Ann DeLozier left Nacodgoches - with her children in tow, and went to Walker County. That was neither an easy nor short trip back in those days.

If I've got this family right, it should look like this:

1st Generation

1. John Crane was born September 21, 1789 in Virginia (Probably Pittsylvania County) and died July 15, 1839 in Nacogdoches, Nacogdoches County, Texas. He married Mary Ann "Polly" Delozier. She was born July 4, 1795 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia and died August 7, 1849 in Walker County, Texas.

Children of John Crane and Mary Ann "Polly" Delozier:

i. Narcisy Crane was born about 1829.
ii. 2.	John Houston Crane was born January 24, 1836 in Texas, and died May 1, 1888 in Utopia, Uvalde County, Texas.
iii.	William A. Crane was born about 1839.

2nd Generation (Children)

2. John Houston Crane was born January 24, 1836 in Texas, and died May 1, 1888 in Utopia, Uvalde County, Texas. He married Martha Elizabeth Jones. She was born 1839 and died 1876.

Children of John Houston Crane and Martha Elizabeth Jones:

i. Mary A. Crane was born About 1856 in Texas, USA.
ii.3. Nathaniel "Nat" Benton Crane was born January 24, 1868 in Texas, and died 1955 in Lamesa, Dawson County, Texas.
iii. Susan E. Crane was born about 1871 in Texas.
iv. James H. Crane was born about 1874 in Texas.

3rd Generation (Grandchildren)

3. Nathaniel "Nat" Benton Crane was born January 24, 1868 in Texas, and died 1955 in Lamesa, Dawson County, Texas. He married Nancy C. Crockett November 10, 1887 in Bandera County, Texas. She was born October 1863 in Texas, and died 1942 in Lamesa, Dawson County, Texas, daughter of Andrew Jackson Crockett and Elizabeth Jane Danley.

Children of Nathaniel "Nat" Benton Crane and Nancy C. Crockett:

i.	4. Etta Crane was born December 1888 in Texas.
ii.	5. Andrew Crane was born June 1890 in Texas.
iii.	6. Eliza Crane was born December 1894 in Texas.
iv.	7. Jesse Crane was born October 1896 in Texas.

4th Generation (Great-Grandchildren)

4. Etta Crane was born about December 1888 in Texas.

5. Andrew Crane was born about June 1890 in Texas.

6. Eliza Crane was born December 1894 in Texas. She married Fred N. Eakin March 7, 1910 in Texas. He was born May 14, 1891 in Texas, and died February 19, 1970 in Lamesa, Dawson County, Texas, son of S. W. Eakin and Mary Stevens.

Children of Eliza Crane and Fred N. Eakin:

i. Clarence Eakin was born about 1912.
ii. Verna Lee Eakin was born about 1914.

7. Jesse Crane was born about October 1896 in Texas.

It's been difficult finding any information on Nat's children. I'd very much appreciate anyone who descends from this family having more information contacting me.

Thanks.

According to Harold Crain in "Five Links" Copyright 1996 by Harold Crain, p 216, John Witaker Crain stated that "John died young" The John Malone Crain story and the Burditt family journal both repeat this short statement "John died young" In the 1830 census of Hardeman County there are two , John Crain's during the same time frame that Joel was living there. Harold's conclusion is "The information in this census tends to establish both John Crains as possible sons of Joel Crain."

Harold also state that John would have been born between 1786 and 1789.

No further information is offered about this John Crain.

I have been to the Hatchie Cemetery

I just read the memorial for William and Joel, a fitting tribute. Thanks for sharing.
According to Solon P. & Margaret Starr Crain, in "Ten Sons of Oliver," Newsfoto Yearbooks, San Angelo, TX, 1972, p. 106, the father of this John Crain (1793-1839) was Joel Crain.

John Crain served as a Captain in the Texas Army from 1835 to 1839. John was killed at Battle of Neches with Cherokee Indians.

The land where Joel Crain was buried has been plowed over and cultivated.

In 1976 a memorial marker honoring William Crain and his younger brother, Joel Crain, was dedicated in the Hatchie Cemetery on Hornsby Road east of Toone, Hardeman County, TN. This marker stands at the entrance of Hatchie Cemetery, Hardeman County, TN
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid= 55496336

Elreeta Crain Weathers

Thank you! That is Hiram's son, William. In fact that is my webpage! LOL I also bought several copies of the book since I learned of his article. There was a brother named Renaldo near his age and there is a R. Crain, age 27, buried in Pipe Creek Cemetery. The age was right so I assumed this to be him. 1894 would be way too late.

But I am almost certain they had a younger brother named Noton by their father's second wife. His first wife was a Bingham. Let me check on this.

Very exciting, I don't find much on these Crains very often!

I have often wondered if any Crains are still in the area. There are descendants there but not of the surname Crain that I know of.

That 1815 Hiram is the right birth date and place to be ours too. There is a later Hiram, his nephew b. 1830's, who died in the Civil War, fighting for the Union along side his brother A.C. Crain. Most of the rest of the family were Confederates.

There was a John, brother to the older Hiram, said to have fought for the Union and moved to Oregon after the war.

Backing up a bit, the whole family was in MO for about 26 years. Most of that time was spent in Newton county. Hiram was the first to go to Texas about 1848. May have not been in MO with them. His older brother, James B. led his whole family consisting of grown kids, 3 of them Confederates, to Lamar and Red River right after the war. There was apparently a deep break with any family left in MO. The other Confederate brothers had preceded him or followed. I think that one in the line that stayed in Lamar married Dimple Crockett. Do you have Crocketts in Lamar?

Thanks, Janet for your quick response. Some information I have on Nathaniel's parents came from this message thread: http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.crain/1533.1/mb.ashx

In that thread, I was told that "my" Nate Crane's father was John Crane. However, I've got some conflicting information on that. I'm still hoping to reconcile it.

Looking through the data on the website, I don't see an obvious match. Doesn't mean they're not related though.

Looking through some archived research I did a few years ago, I found an account of a R.G. Crain meeting a violent death. A John Crain was also wounded in this incident. Since I've got conflicting sources for my Nat Crane's father, I haven't yet reconciled this information. One source says it was John Crane, another says it was Hiram Crane. Either way, this story is interesting:

23 July 1894 "A Woman in the Case"

"Bandera, Bandera Co., Tex., July 19- M. Cravey, a deputy sheriff of Bandera County, has just brought in James Cravey, who this morning killed R.G. Crain and wounded John Crain at the head of Cherry Creek, in Kerr County. Cravey claims that he did the shooting in self defence; that he was attacked by both the Crains and two others and after he had killed one and wounded one he was chased for more than a mile by others and finally leaped from his horse and took to the brush to escape. He made his way to his brother, who is a deputy sheriff of this county, and surrendered to him. The deputy started with him this evening to Kerrville to deliver him to the sheriff of Kerr county. The Crains formerly lived in Bexar County. There had been some bad blood between the parties for some time. John Crain was arrested a short time ago by Sheriff Stevens at a meeting for carrying a gun, which the sheriff found on his person when he arrested him. His case is now pending in the county court. It is said that a woman is at the bottom of the whole affair."

source for above article: http://www.txgenweb2.org/txbandera/news.html

Here's another story by Willilam H. Crane of Pipe Creek, Bandera County:

Trail Drivers of Texas
THE TRAIL DRIVERS OF TEXAS

Interesting Sketches of Early Cowboys and Their Experiences
on the Range and on the Trail during the Days That
Tried Men's Souls-True Narratives Related by Real Cowpunchers and Men who Fathered the Cattle Industry in Texas. Originally Compiled and Edited by J. Marvin Hunter
and George W. Saunders, President of the Old Time Trail Drivers Association
________

Indians Got Their Horses

Narrated by William H. Crain* of Pipe Creek, Texas

I was born in Leon County, Texas, November 25,1849, in a log house which my father and neighbors built. In those days when a new family moved into a community everybody attended the "log rolling" and helped to put up a comfortable log cabin for the newcomers to live in. Our farm was just in the edge of the timber and the Leon prairie spread out in front of our cabin and we had a fine view for miles. There were no fences then, everything ran loose. People depended on bells and hobbles to keep their work animals near home. My father sold this place and bought land in Burleson county, and we lived there until some time in 1864, when we moved out to McCulloch county, on the Colorado River. Our nearest postoffice was Camp San Saba, about twenty-five miles distant. My father's brother-in-law, Judge John Beasley, had moved out there from Missouri, and father decided to make his home there too, but after a time the Indians became so troublesome he concluded to move again, and we went to Kendall county in 1865. Marion Hodges, well known in Bandera county for many years, came along with us. His wife, Nancy A. Hodges** was my father's niece. We rented a log house from Charlie Sughart on the east side of the Cibolo, and the next year we raised a fine crop of corn right in the heart of the present town of Boerne. We often went out and caught wild cattle and made good steers of them after they became gentle.

In 1869 I went back to McCulloch county with Jim Dophlemier and Billie Beasley to help Newt Beasley gather a herd of cattle to drive to Kansas. I had to ride a mule. Her name was not Maud, but she proved herself to be Mand's equal. When we reached Newt Beasley 's we found George Chamberlain, Tom Reese, Jim Parker, Dick Hudson, Charlie Ellington, Jeff Singleton helping to gather the cattle. Jeff Singleton, Newt Beasley and myself went out to gather some cattle one day and rode up on three Indians. One of them had a very pretty striped blanket and before Newt could prevent him, Jeff made a dash for the Indian, saying that he was going to have that blanket. He ran right up to the Indian, with his pistol in his hand, but when he saw two of them armed, with guns he turned his horse quickly and started back toward us. The Indian with the blanket shot him in the back with an arrow. The other Indians then began shooting at Jeff, and Newt went to his assistance, having only an old cap and ball pistol with three loads in it. The Indians beat a retreat and got away. I was only a boy in my teens, and riding that mule I thought my time had come, but I kept up with the other boys. We took Jeff to Mrs. Lindley's house and with a pair of dentist's forceps pulled the arrow out of his back.

Newt Beasley and a man named Gotcher had just bought twenty fresh cow ponies in Coryell county, and had them out grazing. When we went out to bring them in to camp about fifteen Indians dashed in between the boys and the herd of horses, and they had to run for hiding as they had no arms to fight the redskins with. The Indians got every horse they had for the drive, and left Beasley and Goteher with a thousand cattle rounded up and only about twelve head of tired, worn out horses to take the trail with. They had to go on to Kansas with what we had.

When I got back to Boerne in Kendall County, William and Deaters were preparing to go down to Powder Horn after a steam engine for their mill, and I went with them. It took us twenty-one days to make the trip.

I have a small ranch at PipeCreek, in Bandera county, where I am raising a few cows, horses, and goats. If any of the old trail drivers ever get lost up on the Bandera road I want them to hunt me up.
_______________
*William H. Crain (b.1849 TX) was the son of Hiram CRAIN, born 1815, KY. William B. and Rachael CRAIN were his grandparents.

**Nancy A. Hodges was the daughter of Lucinda (Crain) and John Beasley.

Source:http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~craingen/t...

Again, the above story places Cranes in Bandera County, but I've still not drawn a connection to Nathaniel. Maybe I'm missing something obvious.

Here's another Crane who evidently met a violent demise in Kimble County, Texas:

Kimble County, Cemeteries of Texas

Compiled and submitted by Frederica Burt Wyatt , July 6, 2000. If "your" Hiram and Hiram, the suspected father of "my" Nate are indeed one in the same - then we have a match. If either or both are the same man in the above story, then maybe we're a bit closer to sorting them out.

Thanks again for your response.

They weren't direct ancestors. It was my late husband's great grandfather's brother, Hiram Crain and his family. He built a cabin abt. 1850 which is now almost in Boerne and the location is called Crain's Cabin by old timers. Just some of the logs remain.

My husband was tested and we have a group of about 9 men who match.

If you hear of any Crain/Crane descendants from that area, I would appreciate you telling them about the project. I am pretty sure I had something many years back about them being related to those Crocketts. Maybe by marriage.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~craingen/c...

Janet Crain
CRAIN/CRANE DNA Project Co-administrator

Unfortunately, I don't know much more about them than I posted, and don't know if there are living descendants. If you have ancestors in the Bandera County area in that time frame, I'd think you're a likely candidate to be a descendant. I'd love to know more about them, too.

Has anyone from this line been DNA tested? Our Crains were in Kendall and Bandera counties in 1850 and some stayed. Some are buried at Pipe Creek cemetery near Boerne. Do you have a male from this line who could test?

I haven't found out anything else. the line seems to stop at my great great grandmother Clarissa Jane Crain Spiller McKinney Brown (yes, 3 marriages). a cousin of mine, who i've never met is also doing a family search and she knew my grandmother, Margaret Ann Wood Ellis, who told my cousin she was part indian, but that's as far as it went, she didn't ask any other questions. i'm contemplating going to illinois this spring to do some research there. what is you're relationship to this family? thanks, charla thorstad

Mary DeLozier's father has yet to be proven, but the indications point to a Leonard DeLozier who lived in Pittslyvania Co and took the Oath of Allegiance there in the mid 1700's.

In moving my late mother's things, I discovered a book of poetry by Carrie Crain Whitaker. Autographed by the author, it was publised in 1971 in honor of her parents, Sally Holton Crain and Isaac Newton Crain. I had offered this earlier to anyone of her descendants, but then I misplaced both the respondent, his address and the book of poetry.

Again, I offer the book at no cost to anyone who would value it.

David
