I am new to this game. Attemping to trace my maternal grandmother. I know nothing of her parents. Her name was Laura Mae Crandell. She married Percy Benoni Budlong. He was reported to have lost his mother to suicide. and was raised by grandparents. He had a brother John. They came from the Cherry Valley area of mid NYS. Percy was afarm hand, fathered6 living kids, + i still-born and a girl who died in infancy. They moved frequently, and never held a job. Before marriage, Lauara Mae taught in a 1-room school. They later divorced. She remarried Claude Lamerouqe ? sp elling of his name. She was born around 1878 and a similar name is on the 1930 census with age listed as 54, employed as a seamstress. However that list also a daughter age 16 Named. I ?? athat. as my grandmother's oldest son Benjamin married a girl Named Myrtle. If Laura is the same woman , then Myrtle might have been her daughter-in- law. Hope this helps in your quest.

Re: Crandell / Crandall - Anne Arundel County Maryland

I really don't know much about the Franklins or the Crandels except the names on the headstones in the family cemetary on the property I used to own. I can tell you that the people across the road were Franklins when we moved there in 1954 and that I had heard the Franklins once owned most or all of the property on that road.

Like your mother, I would assume the man buried next to her is her husband, even though there is a 20 year difference in age. It was not uncommon for women of that era - especially spinsters - to marry much older men.

There is a Joseph Franklin (16) found in Tracy's Landing (District 8, AA Co.) in the 1860 census. It would appear there are no parents living in that household - only offspring ranging in age from 9 to 24. Catherine Thomas (24)may be the twin sister of Elizabeth Franklin... or cousin... or perhaps the Franklin children are living in a house on the same property as the Thomases. Ages prove the Thomases cannot be parents, step or otherwise of these Franklin children. It shows the two oldest Franklin women having estates of 1500... likely an inheritance of some kind.

There is a JE Franklin, born 1844, living in Baltimore with a wife Maretta and some small children... none of which are Henrietta. There is no proof this is the same man, but if not, then Joseph has dropped off the radar for 1870. Of course the last name could have been misspelled or mis-interpreted for the index, making finding him more difficult. When you are searching, try using Frank*, Franck* and Frenk* Frenck*... or even something like Frack*

It is possible that Henrietta Franklin married Joseph Franklin - 2nd and 3rd cousins often married one another. There are so many possibilities.

Hi, I am interested in the Crandells in Anne Arundel County as well-- I think more info about them will help me find more info on some of the Franklins in my tree

My g-g-grandmother was Henrietta Norma Franklin b 27 Feb 1865 d. Her mother was Margaret A. Franklin (not sure if that was her maiden name) b. 1846.

in 1870 Margaret Franklin and Henrietta Franklin were living in District 8 Anne Arundel County with Margaret Crandel b 1813, Eliza Crandel b 1820, Fannie Simms, Cephus Hebburn, William Stuart, and Richard Crandel.

in 1880 Margaret is now a Crandell living with her husband Andrew Crandell b. 1846, and Henrietta Franklin is listed as a stepdaughter.

Later, Andrew and Margaret have two daughters, Bernie and Lillian, and they all show up in the censuses over the years. My grandmother remembers Aunt Lillian and Aunt Bernie Crandell so that assures me that they are all connected. As far as she knows neither of them married which is supported by the censuses showing them still with the same last name.

I am trying to figure out who Henrietta Franklin's father is. She is buried right next to Joseph Franklin 1844-1923. My grandmother believes that Joseph was Henrietta's husband but I wonder if Joseph Franklin was really her father. I can't ever find him living with Henrietta but I do find her later with her two children, Reginald Cannon Franklin and Henrietta Norma Franklin (my g-grandmother)

CRANDALL/CRANDELL, William Lorenzo

I am trying to trace a descendant of my great grandfather's sister. Jeanette Dailey, b. 1854 in St. Croix Co., WI married Lorenzo Crandall in 1874 in St. Croix Co. Their only child Guy was born circa 1876. In 1895 Guy married Helen Hodgins. They had one son William Lorenzo b. 1896. William lived with grandfather Lorenzo and his second wife Josephine most of the time. Wm is actually cited as Lorenzo's son in the 1910 census. In 1930 Wm. is found in Fairbault, Rice Co., MN as an instructor in a private school. The S.S. Death Index and the History of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Hudson, Wis. cite his death as Jan 1972 in Mercer Co, Illinois. His S.S. number was issued in Illinois as well. Does anyone know of this Crandall line? Any help in finding out about William's life(marriage, children, etc.) is most appreciated! Thank you, Dawn

Eleanor CRANDELL and John OWEN

Hi Message Board Listers,

We are looking for more information on our OWEN and (possibly) CRANDELL ancestors. Our brick wall is our Unknown OWEN, killed by Indians before 1800, spouse unknown. We believe he may have been John OWEN, b. about 1729, m. Eleanor CRANDELL. According to Family Bible records, Our Unknown OWEN's and Unknown Spouse's children were:

William, born February 22, 1774, Sarah, b. July 17, 1776, Polly, born August 9, 1779, Phoebe, born April 2, 1781, Joseph, born November 6, 1783, and Asa, born February 15, 1785. The history of the family of Asa Owen’s second wife, Martha Travis, gives the place of his birth as Goshen, Orange County, NY.

The same source reports that Asa’s father was killed by Native Americans when he was a very young boy and that he was “bound out” to another family until the age of twenty-one.

Asa's nephew, Charles C. Owen, b. 1807, Goshen, Orange Co., NY, followed Asa from NY to PA to MI. Charles was a son of William Owen (Asa's older brother), b. February 22, 1774.

We have more information on the OWEN's in the early years in NY, PA and MI, and are willing to share information on any related familes. If you have any information regarding this OWEN line, and in particular our Unknown OWEN killed by Indians, and/or his Unknown Spouse, we would love to hear from you!

Thank you very much for your time.

Regards,

Cynthia Owen-Gaines

I no longer own the property where this cemetery is located, so cannot give permission for anyone to access it. I did make provisions in the sale contract that the cemetery would remain undisturbed. The new owner is talking about cleaning it up and surrounding it with picket fencing.

If I can ever get anyone to translate the deed records written in shorthand, I will post pertinent details.

Jen Krause

I wish there were more headstones, as well. There may be... buried under silt from over 100 years of hurricanes. The cemetery is within 200 ft of a Chesapeake Bay inlet (Broadwater Creek) and has doubtless been flooded many times. During my lifetime there have been a few. 100 years of leaves falling - as it is in the woods - gives you quite a bit of leaf compost, as well. We did poke around a little to see if we could find any more, but did nothing extraordinary.

Perhaps you can find more information in county deeds. Good luck.
I have several Crandell's in my line from Anne Arundel at the time of the Rev. War. William Crandell was at Annapolis in 1780 and his mother was Sarah. I believe his wife was Rachael. There is a Francis Crandell jr. married Jane Attwood 1733 there also. I have found many other Crandells in Anne Arundel but these are the only ones in my line. I wish there were more headstones.

I am looking for my 2nd great grandmother Mary C Shedd who married Irving Halsted (b. 1850 in NY). Mary was born July 1872 in Poughkeepsie, NY and married her husband in Feb 1892 in Poughkeepsie, NY. Mary's parents were Oliver Shedd and Elizabeth Crandell. Irving's parents were Neamiah (b. 1805 in NY) and Julia Sharpsteen (b. 1819). Mary lived in New York and maybe New Jersey. Mary and Irving had several children including Donald, Elizabeth, Slagle, and Nanette. I know she died some time after 1934. I am looking for anything related to her death - obituary, death certificate, etc.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? I have Mary's husband's obituary (from Poughkeepsie, NY in 1933) that mentions her but cannot find her otherwise.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Joe Finelli

I have taken the time to do a little searching tonight. My previous message had an error. Sarah Cornelia (Helm) Crandell, is one of the Crandell's I have been researching. The facts listed before concerned the Helm family not the Crandell's. I believe her Husband was Wallace Crandell but I have not been able to find him anywhere. Their Daughter my Greatgrandmother is supposed to have been born in Iowa. I have been unable to find her parents there in 1880. I found her married in 1900 in Storm Lake, Iowa. That census states that her father was born in Pennsylvania, and her mother in New York. Sorry for the mixup. Betty

Re: Crandells of New York and Iowa

The only thing further that I have found is Sarah Crandell as an infant in 1950 in Allegany Co. N.Y. She is living a few doors down from a Cornelius Crandell and his wife Sarah. Since her name is Sarah Cornelia Crandell, I can't help but believe these are her grandparents. There are two women in the household with her and because relationships are not listed it is impossible to know which is her mother. Both women are named Crandell. There is no male named Crandell in the household. There is a male but again no relationships are listed. He could be anything from a brother to a boarder. The two women as well as the older couple several doors down are listed as shoemakers. Again this implys relationship to the older couple. Apart from that I have printed some information posted by other people. I have no name for Sarah's father so I am stuck. I haven't found her in 1860 or 1870. As I said I find her with my Grandfather in North Dakota in 1920 as a widow. Got any ideas? Thanks for writing.

Yes. Have you finished your research or are you still into it. My mother is a Crandell, and yes, part of this founding family. I believe I am 12th generation Crandell, however my name has changed to Collins by my mother's marriage. My uncles who still visit and work toward the restoration of this small cemetary are still local to the area, and very involved in our family ancestry. Can I be of any help to you?

Yes, it looks as though you are on tpop of things :) I live in Studio City (Hollywood/Los Angeles) California now, however my uncle emailed the mentioned photos to me. Since you have contact with my unlce, I don't think there is much I can help you with, as my uncle David seems to be the most knowledgable in the family. Good luck with everything!

~J
