I was wondering why did Elizabeth Cranfield's grandfather, William have a different name? According to my research he was born William Glover, who was born in 1443 in Witterham, Kent County, England? I thought that the name was Cranfield?

Thanks In Advance,
K.
Jonathan Cranfield/Cranfill's first wife?

Searching for the name of the first wife of Jonathan Cranfield/Cranfill b. 1776, son of Hezekiah. I believe he first married about 1797 because the first child, Joshua was b. 22 Aug 1798. I no longer believe that Jane "Jinsey" Hendricks was the mother of all his children, except for Rachel, because Jane was not born until 1795. She must've married Jonathan after the death of his first wife which would've been sometime between 1822 and 1835. Are there church records or cemetery records that might have his first wife's name recorded somewhere?

Persis Jane Cranfield

I am looking for information on Persis Jane Cranfield who was born in NY on 11 Nov. 1842. I think her parents name are Isaac and Cyrena Cranfield. I find them on the 1850 Census for Chautaugua County, NY. According to my family stories, Persis marred a Francis Gordon in Ohio. They had two children, Rose and William Perry Gordon. Francis abandoned his family in 1864 and left for parts unknown. Rose was given away to a family and was never heard from again. Persis kept William, but had to put him in a poor farm. She remarried again to a Mr. Connelly and they had one son, James. Mr. Connelly died and James was given away to a family by the name of See. Once again, Persis had to support her son and herself, and at times William was put into poor farms. She married a t hird time to a Mr. Walter Whitford and they had one son, named Walter. According to family history, Persis died 11 Jan 1919 and is buried in New York State. If anyone can discount this version of the story I was told or prove it, I would be grateful.
Thank you.
Angie Hall Bowness

Cranfield/Cranfill Hall connections of Rowan Co., NC?

I have finally found some correct information about Abraham Hall's daughter Elizabeth who married William A. Adams in 1819, Rowan/Davie Co. He was the son of John Adams. Elizabeth Hall Adams was the only child of Abraham Hall who went to Calloway and Graves Co. KY when the large group from Rowan Co left.
They were in Calloway County by 1826 when their 1st child listed, Abraham Adams was born.
William and Elizabeth's son Isaac Wiles Adams was born 1836, Calloway Co., d. 1907 Calloway Co., married Martha P. Cranfill abt. 1855. She was b. 1835. Her parents are not given but maybe someone on the list will know.
This is at least one connection between the Halls and Cranfields, Cranfills of Rowan Co NC.
Thanks so much, love to all,
GerriAnn

Re: Joseph Crankfield - Help

Wendy, I found a Joseph Cranfield who married Barbary Bright on June 3, 1723 in St. Peters Parish, Talbott County, Maryland. If Hezekiah was born approximately 1740 as some speculate, this Joseph could be his father or grandfather. Talbott County is not all that far from Kent County, Delaware. On the same page of marriages in Maryland with Joseph Cranfield and Barbary Bright are two Needles in Talbott County and we know that Hezekiah married Ann Needles later in Delaware. This was found on Genealogy.com.

Glynis

My grandmother was Rosina Cranfield before marrying Walter Arthur Townsend on 9.12.1908 at Clapham. She was born 17.2.1890 in Battersea. Her father was George Cranfield, a General Labourer married to a German girl called Anna Bonner we think from Frankfurt. George's father was also called George and was a Blacksmith according to the marriage certificate for his son.He is also deceased at 1887.
I am having no luck finding the Cranfields (father or son) in the 1881 or 1891 censuses and of course the 1901 is a disaster.Do you have any George son of George in your data base?My guess is that our Cranfields are from Essex via the East End of London.

Hello Wendy, thanks for your reply. The only one I know is Thomas my late husband's g.grandfather. The eldest son all seem to be called Thomas. This family moved to Manchester about 1850. I have some of the family from that time but nothing previous. Thomas married Mary Ann Rea in Dublin.
I have noticed there are several places named Cranfield in both Northern and Southern Ireland, which is why as I first stated it must have been someone of note that they were named after.
Mailing List

I have officially volunteered to be the administrator of the Cranfield list at Rootsweb.com. I have never done this before, but since it was available, I figure I'd give it a try. I'd love to see some discussions on the list.
I would love to see us make the connection between the U.S. and Europe in the Cranfield, Crankfield, and Cranfill families. I have actually come across names that started out as Cranfield, and then changed over the course of time to Cranfill with the documents to prove it.
Of course, my original goal was to figure out who Hezekiah Cranfield/Cranfill's father was. I still have that goal. But I have come to suspect that his father was Joseph who was on the tax rolls with him, but I cannot prove it. I have found quite a few Joseph Cranfield's(with variations) over in England in the IGI Index, but do not know where to go from there. Some of you more experienced genealogists might know what to do. Any help and or ideas appreciated.
Let's rev up the CRANFIELD list and get it going again!
Sincerely, Wendy
Delia,
Do you have any way to research if there was a Joseph Cran(k)field in before 1748? Or maybe a ship list that went to America from England containing his name? I have come across many Cranfield names for Bedfordshire, England. But dont know how to connect them with our American Cranfield's. If you got any ideas, please let us know.
Thanks so much, Wendy

Joseph Crankfield - Help

Is there anyone who can assist me in figuring out if Joseph Crankfield is Hezekiah, Moses, & Isaiah's father? And is there anyway to figure out where Joseph Crankfield came from before coming to Delaware? Does anyone live in Delaware?

[Someone else provided this info a long time ago, and I would like to find the source for it]: Joseph Crankfield appeared on Kent Co. Delaware tax rolls in 1748 - 1756 along with Hezekiah, Moses, and Isaiah. Hezakiah and brother Moses were on Murderkill Hundred tax rolls for 1761and continue on tax rolls through 1777 when written by Hezakiah's name was the word "gone"( Moses was still on 1778 roll.) Isaiah Crankfield appeared with Joseph in 1751.

I get the feeling that Joseph was their father, but I cant prove it. Last night I confirmed that Moses Crankfield stayed in DE and also named his 1st son Joseph. Naming patterns would suggest that Joseph Crankfied is Moses' father as well. I found the probate records for Moses 1802-1803 Kent County, his wife Nancy 1796-1802 Kent County and their son Moses in 1832 Kent County.

The Calendar of Kent County Delaware Probate Records 1680-1800 lists Nancy Crankfield, widow of Moses Crankfield, Murderkill hundred, Admin. of, to Moses Crankfield. January 25, 1796, Register of Wills - heirs, Joseph, John, Nancy, Rachel, Lydia and Moses Crankfield, Polly Summers (wife of Zael Summers) and Elizabeth Meredith.
