A minute ago I wrote that the Census "lists him as being 9 years old (born 1920-1921) rather than 6 or 7 (if he was born 1923-1924)."

But I failed to notice that the obit was from 2010, so the age does match after all; 9 years old on April 1 1930 means he was born between April 2 1920 and April 1 1921, and 88 on February 10, 2010 means he was born between February 11, 1921 and February 10, 1922. So a birth date between February 11, 1921 and April 1 1921 satisfies both.

my great-grandfather, Lemuel Allen, born in New York ( I think in Franklin county) in 1846, had a son, Joseph, a George, a Charles and a Watson Horace. The name is repeated throughout the family..
Lemuel married Phelinda Brooks. They moved to Rochester, NY where he died in the early 1900's. Could there be a connection?

Margaret or Elizabeth Cranstoun, early 1600s, m. Thomas Craig of Riccarton...who was her mother?

First of all, was her name Margaret or Elizabeth?

Secondly, we know that her father was James Cranstoun. He was married twice, first to Elizabeth MacGill and then to Elizabeth Stewart, daughter of the Earl of Bothwell.

By his first wife he had a daughter. By his second wife, he had another daughter. There is confusion as to which daughter was named Elizabeth and which was named Margaret. Furthermore, there is confusion as to which daughter married Patrick Cockburn and which married Thomas Craig of Riccarton. Some reliable sources put it one way and some reliable sources put it the other way.

Given that I seem to descend from Thomas Craig three times, I would really like to know the identity of his wife once and for all. Was she a child of Elizabeth MacGill or Elizabeth Stewart? Is her mother's name listed in any document of her?

By the way, it's often worthwhile checking nearby in the census for relatives. I don't know if you noticed this, but with Thomas and Laura Boone Cranston living in Marcy Twp. (later Duryea Borough), Luzerne Co., PA in 1880, you'll find a John Boone aged 31 there, also born in Ohio, but giving his parents' birthplace as Pennsylvania. It's possible he's her elder brother, and one of them is incorrectly reporting their parent's birthplace. The parents may have come from PA and briefly moved to Ohio before returning home.

There are quite a few other Boones in Luzerne county at other locations who are possibly cousins or even their parents, e.g. Townsend and Mary Boone.

It's possible, since Daniel left Pennsylvania as a boy, that you are also cousins rather than lineally related.

Scott
Censuses often include information that is reported by someone else in the family, so it's possible that Laura's husband (or even one of their children) could have responded to the census taker on her behalf and provided incorrect information. But in the case of the 1900 census it's clearly the daughter (or someone even more removed, e.g. a son-in-law or grandchild) who is responding, so that's the more probable source of error in this conflict between "Ohio" and "Pennsylvania".

You say she died in 1887; at this late date it's quite possible there's a death certificate for her, which may include information about her parentage and more specifics about her place of birth. Though, again, the reporting can be in error, given the necessity of a secondhand informant.

Scott
Hi Scott,
Thanks for the response. Here were my thoughts on the OHIO thing. She is rumored to be a descendent of The Daniel Boone. He was a Quaker from Pennsylvania. Some of the first settlements in Kentucky were named "Ohio" and then later Ohio, County. So, I was assuming that it may be a mistake. Her daughter (Laura) also, lists her mother's birthplace as PA in the 1900 census. Just a long shot, but I cannot find her in anything other then the 1880 census and have no clue on her parentage.
Thanks,
Lisa

> Laura Boone, b. 1852 in "Ohio" (I have no idea if that is
> Ohio County of Kentucky or Tennessee or actually Ohio
> She lists it that way in the 1880 census

It is certainly the state of Ohio. The state is all they list on the census (besides their current location, or if a foreign country).

The 1880 census also has parents' birthplace, and in her case they are also both listed as Ohio. Kind of unusual at this time to head back east to eastern Pennsylvania.

Scott

Hi, I am trying to connect my great great grandmother Laura Boone, b. 1852 in "Ohio" (I have no idea if that is Ohio County of Kentucky or Tennessee or actually Ohio. She lists it that way in the 1880 census; she is dead before the 1890 census. She marries twice - First to Thomas Cranston, b 1853, Scotland U.K. in 1873; Thomas dies in 1886ish; she remarried in 1887 to Joseph Fadden and died the same year. I have been told all my life she is a descendant of "The Daniel Boone". I cannot find any direct lineage from Daniel's 3 boys that lived. Laura lived, married and died in and around Avoca, Scranton, Duyrea, Pennsylvania. Other lines she is connected to are: Bullock and Ruddy. Anybody out there see any links?
Thanks,
Lisa

David,

Email sent as reply. The obituary I mentioned came from Papers Past New Zealand. This is the James Cranston who married a New Zealander but it could be your James is his father. That would tie in as in that generation (from my perspective) there was also a Robert Cranston.

This would also mean that the James Cranston you are researching was part of the Heavty Brigade but I cannot make headway with this connection.

Hi, My great grandfather was James Cranston who was head land stewart at durrisdeer,Dumfriesshire, I believe this area was just outside Edinburg. Also I believe that one of his brothers went to New Zealand. I wonder if we are talking aboiut the same James Cranston. I have a birth cert for James but I have never been able to find a death cert. James Cranston signed the marrage cert for my grandfather Robert Cranston in 1907 in Dublin. James wife was Mary Ann Smith. I know that there was an Isobella, Agnes, Annie and David so it could well be the same family. Where did you get the obituary ????. my e mail is davidcranston2@eircom.net. ps. my brother Robert and my son Gary both live in New Zealand.

I am the great grand daughter of one James Cranston born in Dumfries, Scotland. From his obituary I learned that he was the son of James Cranston who was manager of the Estates of the Duke of Buccleugh and the nephew of Sir Robert Cranston (Former Lord Provost of Edinburgh. I know that they are connected to Isobella J Cranston as the son of James who migrated to NZ gave IJ Cranston , his aunt, as his next of kin when he signed up WW1. Her address was Dunsyre Manse. I believe that James Cranston senior served with the Royal Greys. Does anyone know about this?

Cowan in October 1877 in Leeds. Walter was 27 years old and he was from Ireland and Agnes was 20 years old and from Canada. Walter's parents were John and Sarah Cranston and Agnes' parents were John and Rachel Cowan.
Obit: James Allen Cranston (1933-2010)

Cranston, James Allen 76 11/24/1933 11/11/2010

James Cranston passed away Nov. 11, 2010, surrounded by his family, following a courageous battle with cancer. He was 76. Born Nov. 24, 1933, in Minot, N.D., to Cecil and Henrietta Cranston, Jim was a 1951 graduate of Vancouver High School. He attended Willamette University prior to joining the U.S. Navy Pilot Training Program. Seeking his next challenge after the Navy, he pursued a long and successful career in the commodities industry as an international broker. His work took him to Portland and San Francisco where, together with his wife, Reggie, he raised his two children. Jim was a longtime resident of Portland and touched the lives of many as a son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, friend, and volunteer. He was the first to offer help in almost any situation, and was the last to accept it due to his fierce independence. He loved a gathering of good friends and family, experiencing new cultures during his world travels, and was an exceptional cook-fearlessly barbecuing in any weather. Jim is survived by his son, Mike (Nancy); daughter, Paula Ordway (Gary); grandchildren, Jimmy, Lauren, Emma, and Gracie; brother, Robert of Dallas, Texas; and dear friend, Marge Becker. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Mike of Donnelly, Idaho. Remembrances in Jim's honor may be made to Loaves & Fishes.

************************************************

Published in:
The Oregonian
Portland, OR
November 21, 2010

http://obits.oregonlive.com/obituaries/oregon/obituary.aspx?...

************************************************

James' father appears to be Cecil C.

Cathy, most definitely is the right person. I know about the 3 daughters and the marriage to Cyril Little but unable to find anything else. There is another lady also searching and she thinks she has found Cyrill's grave in Bellingham. Still kind of a mystery. I did read your other post. Sure is more info then Beverly and I have found. My Grandmother is Susan Delia Cranston, born 3/6/1920, in Langdon, ND. As I understand the family still lived in Canada then but were in ND and there was a storm and they were delayed awhile and she was born there instead. Married name was Bennett. There were 5 sisters. Elsie, Alma, Margaret(Kay), my Grandmother, and Lillian. Those are in birth order. I don't know what happened in that family but both Elsie and your Alma ran off young and were never heard from again. My grandma did the genealogy stuff and did find out a little about Alma and Cyril and the 3 daughters. But I know that Kay and grandma never did understand why they left and what happened. I honestly don't know about Lillian, she wasn't close to grandma and as far as I know to Kay either. I think I met her twice. I believe that the problem between was that Lil was a little wild for them and she drank a lot. Well that's it for now, can provide info on some of the kids and grand kids and husbands and some family history. And I would love more info about Alma.
If you don't mind just use my regular email. BeachBumbler@aol.com. Thanks Donna Bennett

Hi,

I knew that my Alma had married someone named Little, but we didn't have a first name. The children that I knew of from that marriage were Ina, Mary and Betty. We were under the impression that there were three daughters.

The stories that we had were that Alma was married to Little and that when he died, she went a bit crazy. She was hooking up with several men and reportedly living in a place that was a known whorehouse.

She was married to a Stephen W. Currie for awhile. She got pregnant with my Mom while married to him, but he wasn't her father. My Mom's father was Adolph Robert Siehe. Alma had a few more children with Adolph, my Uncle Everett and Norma. I haven't traced all of the children yet. Alma also had at least one child with Stephen Currie. Her name was Roberta Louise Currie.

When my Mom was growing up, every time some momentous event would happen like graduation or when she got married, my Uncle Everett would show up with some sibling that my Mom had never met.

Alma has definitely been one of my brick wall ancestors. I'm so glad that it looks like I have finally found her family. A lot of the info about her seems to match yours.

I will send you a private note with my email so that you can contact me directly.

Cathy

Robert P Cranston and Lena May Musgrove had 5 children. Elsie, Alma, Kathleen, Susan, and Lillian. Susan is my Grandmother and the rest are my aunts. Elsie and Alma left home when they were young and very little is known about them. One of them is believed to have married a Malcolm Mcloud and one believed to have married a Cyril Little. One of them has record of a child named Ina. One is thought to have live in canada. If anyone know of these people or families I would greatly appreciate the help.

Thanks,
Donna
