Hello, I just saw your post on the Ancestry Message Board. My great grandfather was John Creaven and my great great grandfather was Patty Creaven of Co. Galway Ireland. As a small child I would visit Philadelphia with my grandmother Mary Cecelia Creaven-McNeill family members. My grandmother's relatives would also visit relatives in PA. Many of my relatives immigrated to the US through Philadelphia. I have been working on family ancestry and have connected with family members in MA as well as Ireland. I would very much like to obtain copies of the pictures you may have where I can share them with other family members to help piece our family ancestry puzzle together. Thank you, Marcia A. Sheridan

Mysteries of the Thompson Craven Lineage

Seeking information regarding Thompson Craven (1795- 1875), his ancestry and descendants, and factors associated with his move from Randolph County, NC to Iowa and then Missouri. Also wondering about the details of Mary Yeargin Craven's death, burial, etc. I have records indicating legal or court action of some type involving Thompson in Randolph County in 1846, followed by a move to Iowa with Mary, the death of Mary (who seemingly was brought back to NC for burial), a subsequent move to Missouri, and second marriage to Nancy Bullock, but unable to piece all of this together in a coherent manner. Thompson and Mary seeingly migrated to Iowa, then to Missouri, with Mary dying at some point between 1850 and 1860. Question is why did Thompson and other members of his family make this journey and then, seemingly, bring Mary's body back to Randolph County in North Carolina(?).

I am in the Thompson Craven line through Branson Lane (1815 - 1878), Robert Charles (1851 -?), Arthur Frank (1885 - 1950), Charles Kinsman Sr. (1934 - 2010), to me, Charles Kinsman, Jr. (1958). Branson was presumably the first child of Thompson Craven and Mary Yeargin. Records indicate that Thompson and Mary were married in Randolph County, NC 3 November of 1814, gave birth to Branson 9 November of 1815, and then "orphaned" him to Thomas Yeargin (Mary's father or brother?) in May of 1819 (Branson listed as 4 1/2 years old but evidently only 3 1/2 at the time).

Branson is NOT listed with Thompson and Mary; their first-born is generally cited to be Nancy Jane (11-12-1815)with no mention of Branson. However, I have documentation of his 11-9-1815 birth to Thompson and Mary, then being "indentured" (as an "orphan") to Thomas Yeargin in May of 1819. All of this occurred in Randolph County, NC.

He (Branson)is next found in Marion, SC, where he married Charlotte Smith with whom he fathered four children. However, the 1850 SC Census lists him twice. He is living with Charlotte and three children in Marion, SC, in July, then listed in October as living across the river with ANOTHER Charlotte (Thompkins) and daughter Luceta. He subsequently moved with his "common-law wife" Charlotte and daughter to Elizabethtown, Bladen County, NC where he prospered as a prominent hotel keeper, church deacon, county coronor, and justice of the peace. There are several reliable records of different sources to support this contention. He is buried at Trinity Methodist Church in Elizabethtown, but mystique remains.

The same is true of his(?) youngest child, Robert Charles. Born in October of 1851 (i.e., at least 11 months after Branson "left" Charlotte Smith for Charlotte Thompkins), Robert Charles married Sarah Catherine "Cassie" Altman (1860-1935) with whom he fathered seven children. As was seemingly true of his father before him, Robert Charles "Charlie" also reportedly left his family in Marion, SC around 1891 and was never heard from again. Various family stories indicate different fates (e.g., murdered by wife Cassie, drowned while working on a fishing boat at Little River, SC, became a policeman or inmate at Florence, SC, etc.), but none have been substantiated. Some family histories indicate that he died in 1937 (age 86) but I have found no documentation of such an event. Any help would be greatly appreciated and reciprocal information will be provided to the extent possible.

Thank you.
CKC Jr.
919-271-3734

I am looking for info on my gg grandfather Michael J. Craven, allegedly born in Ireland about 1820. His wife's name is possibly Eliza or Elizabeth Kelly (also from Ireland). Michael and Elizabeth settled in Burlington County NJ in the mid-1800s. Their five children are Edward, Mary, Michael, Elizabeth, and Margaret. I'm trying to figure out where (family and location) he comes from.

Alice

Richard Foster was widowed sometime between 1861 and 1871. There was nothing stopping him from marrying Mary Craven; it's not apparent why that didn't happen until 1881. I suspect she was in dire circumstances. Richard Foster Craven never used Foster as a surname. Arthur, the next younger child, apparently did. I don't think we will ever know for sure the fathers of the children.

Which child of Letty's do you descend from? She was an interesting woman too.

I never did get Letty's brother Henry's birth certificate. I didn't ever find a baptism for him either. If you are in a sharing mood when his birth certificate comes, I'd love to see what it had to say. You can click on my user name Snowyborn to see my email address if you want to communicate that way.

Laurie

Thanks I suspected as much but still 6 children out of wedlock at that time? It seemed a little to much. She later married Richard Foster and one of the children carried that as a middle name I wonder is that a clue to who the Father of these children was. However on one of the census it listed the first 2 children, I believe, as stepchildren.

Ronda

You can't find that particular Thomas Craven because he doesn't exist! Letty Craven, born 21 April 1870 at Bishop Wilton, was the second child of Mary Craven. Mary was an unmarried woman when she had her first six children. Mary was the daughter of Thomas Craven and Ann Ward. Thomas was born at Fridaythorpe in 1824, the son of Thomas and Mary Ann (Lumley) Craven. He married Ann Ward (baptized 1830 at Burythorpe, the daughter of John and Mary Ward) on 17 Aug 1845 at Burythorpe. Mary was the couple's third child. Ann (Ward) Craven died of childbirth in 1857.

Yes. Joseph Daniel (J.D.) Craven is a son of Thompson Craven. J.D. is my great, great grandfather. He married Bethenia Arledge. Both are buried in Duston Cemetery, about 2 1/2 miles northeast of Kingston, Caldwell County, Missouri. J.D.'s father, Thompson, is buried a few miles south of Kingston, in Knoxville, Ray County, Missouri...in the Knoxville Cemetery. Also buried next to Thompson, is his second wife, Nancy Bullock and their two children...Annis J. and Sarah Elizabeth. Thompson's first wife was Mary Yeargin, who is the mother of J.D., and all of his brothers and sisters.
Craven, John, 1870?-1930??

John Garside(?) Craven was my grandfather-in-law and has proved impossible to locate. Legend has it that he was born about 1870 in Cheshire and left his farming family to persue an academic career. He met Gladys Ralston about 1920 and they ran away to 444 Georgia St, Vancouver, Canada where they had two children: Paul Maguire Garside Craven, who died aged about six weeks in 1921, and my mother-in-law, in 1923. He returned to the UK in 1926: found in UK incoming passengers where his profession is listed as Litrature (sic). Shortly after, he died of cancer in a/the London clinic (the London Clinic did not open until 1932). As they did not marry (unusual for the class and time) it is difficult to find any credible records. Although he is shown on Paul's death certificate and the passenger list as 'John Craven' it is possible that this is an incomplete or false name. He does not appear to have graduated from Oxford, Cambridge, London or St Andrews.
Any ideas about how to find this person would be gratefully received.

Hello,

Just saw your post! I'm Darlene Craven, Paul's daughter. I met your Mom once when I was 16 at a McDonald's restaurant in New Philadelphia. I didn't know I was going to meet my half-sister; in fact, I didn't even know I had a half-sister let alone two. I'm your aunt! I've often thought about Carolyn and Kay (whom I have yet to meet). I wanted to contact Carolyn, but I didn't know how I would be received. Funny, everyone always thought I was the milkman's daughter because I did not resemble either my mom or dad. But when I met your mom, I somehow new we were related. I realize this post is old, but I hope you get this email. Please contact me.

In 1885 he married a widowed Lady called Fanny Lowe. According to there marriage cert. his father was called Francis and described as deceased cattle dealer.
Robert Charles Craven (1851 - ?)

Searching for information on Robert Charles "Charlie" Craven (born in 1851 in Marion, SC) who reportedly left his wife, Sarah Catherine Altman Craven (1850 - 1935) and kids in Marion, SC around 1890. Various family stories have surfaced (e.g., went to Florence, SC as a policeman or convict or minister; assumed an alias of "James Dudley," was drowned while working on a fishing boat in Little River, SC, and is buried there at the Methodist Church Cemetery on Highway 17, etc.) but I have no documented evidence to support any of these theories. It is noted throughout many of the pertinent family trees posted here that he died in 1937, but I see no records to support this date. Anyone have any information?

Iam looking for any family members of Frances Craven Dudbridge who was married to Walter Zook Dudbridge, Sr. and had one son, Walter Zook Dudbridge, Jr. Mr. Dudbridge, Jr. passed away in April, 2011. I was Mr. Dudbridge's power of attorney. I have pictures of whom I believe are members of the Craven and Dudbridge families. There are also pictures of Mr. Dudbridge, Jr. when he was a youngster. There is also a newspaper article of Mr. Dudbridge, Sr. when he was retiring as chief of police and I believe chief of the fire department in Hatboro, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania. If anyone knows either of these families and would like me to send the pictures to them please contact me at this site.

Judy

He (Richard Chesley) is buried in Oregon. My mom, aunt and uncle took a picture of his tombstone when they were just there. He and Emma Wood Craven are both at the Dallas Cemetery, Center 7 Blk 96 #1,2,3. At least that's what it says on some family papers. It also says he died in 1919. I could scan some papers and send them if you'd like. There is a historical house 858 E. Main Street, Dallas that was built in 1880. Not sure who's house it was, but there is a plaque on it that says Craven House.

Right, Ann Croft Craven did have a son Peter who was born in England and emigrated with her and a brother and sister. The question is, is he the father of our ancestor, Peter the Regulator? Don't know.

Regarding Richard Chesley Craven: is he buried in Oregon? if he was still in Los Angeles county in January of 1920 (census), where did he die? I'm going to Salem and Dallas in April and will try to do some Craven work. Let me know if there's somethig you'd like me to look for. I'm descended from your Richard Chesley's sister Eliza Ann and her husband George Cummins Smith.

Thanks for replying! I do know the date of Richard Chesley Craven (son of Solomon) because he is my great-great grandfather. He died 18 Feb 1920. My grandfather is Franklin Bishop Craven (b 8 Nov 1918), who's father was Edgar Allen Craven (b 22 July 1888) who was son of Richard Chesley Craven.
My mom, my aunt and my uncle were just in Oregon this past month and got some information. There is a letter written to a Katherine from a Florence who said that Peter Craven was the son of Ann Croft Craven, widow of Sir Robert Craven. I have to find out who Florence is. Anyways, like I said I am just starting and have a lot to learn! My tree that I started is the Tamori Morgan Family Tree. Thanks for your help and all of your suggestions!

I haven't found ANY record of Peter Craven 1712's parents. I believe he's the son of Peter, son of Ann Croft the Immigrant and Robert Craven who died in England, but there's no evidence that I've seen. Have you read "Craven's Choyce" and "The Settler's Along the Old Grey Trail"? I think both are here at Ancestry now. They help clear up the older immigrant families of Ann and Robert and of his brother Richard and his four children, but they don't prove a connection between Peter son of Ann and Peter 1712. There is so much stuff "stuck" to Ancestry trees that's just not documented, mixed up generations, etc., ... it's very frustrating and makes finding the truth a lot harder!

There's LOTS to learn about Peter 1712 at the University of NC site "Documenting the American South" at http://docsouth.unc.edu/ . "Peter Craven" in the search box gets hundreds of hits, mostly to images and transcriptions of documents related to the Carolina Regulators (in which sons Thomas and our Joseph also participated).

I haven't worked on this family for a long time, so I'm sure more has come to light. Whatever is on my public tree (The Smith - Ozeran Family Tree) for the Cravens is either documented, or I've made explanatory notes, but for the middle generations I don't think there's much other than census records. (I think the death date on my tree for Richard Chesley Craven son of Solomon is wrong, and I'm removing it right now to take a closer look at a family in Los Angeles at the turn of the century...)

Hi Janelle~
I am new to this and am working on my Craven line. I saw this post and it seems I have the same family names listed as you...Solomon Craven, Richard Chesley Craven, Joseph Craven, Peter Craven 1712 and then Peter Craven 1671. I have a question for you on Richard Chesley on back. Were you able to find any sources for these older Craven's? Do you know if from Peter Craven 1671 it went Sir Robert Craven 1632--Sir Thomas Craven---Anthony Craven---William Craven---to John Cravens of Appletreewick, England? Or am I on the wrong path?
