If you went to the Cravens Cem. that lies on top of a ridge on the Casey Russell Co. line you probably didn't realize which graves were Jeremiahs and Nancys, There were two, maybe three (its been a while since I was there)graves built in the European tradition - a wall of stones about a foot high with a single block of stone on the top. There are no markings. There was also a small grave there, and I think Jere and Nancy had a child that died young. Son Ira and Sarah B Shaw Cravens share a double stone. Best to go in the winter - it is a really snakey looking place. To get there - go south on 127 and about the county line turn left on a creek gravel road that crosses Goose Creek. Go to the end, then go through a field through a gap in the woods. Go to the base of the ridge and the cemetery is on the top.

I am researching Anna Maria Cravens, possibly William's sister or stepsister. I found William, Mary, and other siblings in the 1850 census. I am thinking the older Mary Ann is his mother and her stepmother. Though I am not sure.

A Leonard Cravens from PA was in the Civil War. It looks like he did not survive. There was also another one but he settled in W VA and did survive. On the pension application card the claimant is mother Mary Ann. I am planning on ordering the pension packet. I hope that will be a lead. I am trying to find the other Cravens in the 1860 census.

Would love to keep in touch with anyone researching this family.

I did find a W W Cravens in the 1840 census for Randolph Township, Crawford, Pennsylvania.
2 males 5-10 (William and Orrin)
1 male 40-50 (W W)
2 females under 5 (Sarah and Mary)
1 female 5-10 (Ann? or maybe she was somewhere else and this is a different girl)
1 female 10-15 (Harriet? or Ann?)
1 female 30-40 (Maryann)
So I think that may be a hint for the father as that is their residence in the 1850 census and the youngest child, Henry, was born in 1847.

The children I have are:

Harriet L b 1824
Ann M b 1827 (my Anna Maria who md Charles Amasa Owen)

William J mentioned in your post
Orrin (or maybe Orris) b May 1835 md Eliza living in NY 1900 and 1910
Sarah M b 1837
Mary E b 1840
Leonard b 1842
Rosilla b 1845
Henry H b Oct 1847 m Lydia Frost was in OH 1900 & IL 1910

I think the first 2 girls were from a different mother due to the age of Maryann who was (according to 1850 census) b 1811. She would have been 13 and 16 at the births of the 2 girls.

I tried to send you an e-mail but my internet is acting stupid. I do know that alot of this Cravens family also went to Texas. I did not know many of them as my grandfather was murdered when my father was about 11 months old and his mother remarried and didn't have much to do with the Cravens side. But my dad does remember his grandfather Albert M. Cravens. Albert was born in Casey County before they moved. And His father died in Texas I know where he was buried. I live in Laurel County, KY and am going to Casey County this week to get some copies of Birth, Marriage and Death Records.

I am related to the Cravens you are researching. My father is the only child of Virgil Monroe Cravens oldest son of Albert Monroe Cravens. His father was Thomas Cravens son of Micheal Green Cravens son of Ira Russel Cravens son of Jere Cravens from Casey County, Kentucky. I have located and been to the Cravens Cemetery in Casey County but cannot located the Grave of Jere. Do you know where it might be his wife is buried at the Cravens Cemetery and I think her parents are there too.

Not direct information, but I went in search of the Cravens family cemetery near Burnt Prairie last year. I had the coordinates and a GPS and couldn't find it. Stopped at a convenience store nearby and the cashier, a local woman, remembered seeing it when she was a kid. It is either engulfed in the woods or disappeared under the eastbound on-ramp to the highway. Young Brooken Cravens was supposed to have been buried there, from what I have read.

I am interested in Josiah Cravens born about 1795 in South Carolina. His family is listed in the 1850 US Census in Yell county Arkansas. His wife is listed as Vicy born about 1815. I have found that the wife's name was Dicy Fulton. They have 3 of their own children living with them: James, Samuel & Arkansas Cravens. They also have 5 other children in their household: Hellen, James, Wesley W., Sarah A., & Martha I. SMITH. I am a descendant of Margaret Elizabeth Smith who is an older sister of these 5 Smith children.

I want to know why these Smith children are living with the Cravens in 1850. Who were the parents of the Smith children? Anyone related to this Cravens family who can shed light on this?

What part of Illinois did your Cravens move to. Many of the Cravens form Casey and Russell counties came to the Morgan and Sangamon counties areas of Illinois. Most of them are the one's that I am researching.

Death of Dr. L. M. Cravens - 1889

Taken from the Cherokee Advocate, Oklahoma, 22 May 1889

We regret that it becomes our sad duty to announce the death on Saturday night last, of Dr. L. M. Cravens, one of our honored citizens. He was surrounded by kind friends and a loving wife who did everything they could to make his last moments peaceful. He had been ill for some time, but up to a few days of his death, was able to go about and consequently but few knew he was sick. He was a minister in the Methodist Church and a strong advocate of temperance, and was always found at the head of any movement to suppress intemperance. He was a loving husband and a kind friend, and leaves a hose of friends to mourn his loss. He died in the 65th year of his age. He was buried on Sunday at the Crittenden Grove burial ground by the side of his adopted daughter who in her life time was the pride of his heart. The bereaved wife has the heart-felt sympathy of the Advocate.

The Cravens House

Just discovered a clipping in a newspaper's on-line presence with the following text

the three-story, 50-room Cravens Estate, now headquarters of the San Gabriel/Pomona Valley American Red Cross, has a unique provenance. Its exterior is already familiar to TV viewers around the world as a background for several shows, including "JAG," "Mad Men," "Ghost Whisperer," "Murder She Wrote" and "Desperate Housewives."

The house was built in 1929 by John Cravens and his wife, Mildred Myers - daughter of the co-founder of Liggett & Myers Tobacco Co. - at a cost of about $310,000.

The couple, who first moved to Pasadena from Missouri in 1900, commissioned noted San Francisco architect Lewis Hobart to replicate the baroque-style of the Chateau Vaux le Vicomte near Paris, which was also the inspiration for Versailles. The Cravenses had no children and after their deaths in the 1940s, the estate had a number of owners until 1962, when then-owner Simon Zervos donated it to the American Red Cross.

I don't know who they are. I do know they were part of the family in Rockingham, Virginia and moved to Pennsylvania where Joseph E and Mary J were both born. Their son Joseph who is my GGG Grandfather was born in Virginia before they moved to Il so that is what has lead me to believe Joseph E. was part of the Virginia family. I have not been able to find the Cravens buried in Green county,PA either. I would love to solve the mystery of this family. Wish I could be of more help.

Sharon

I have received admin emails recently about username posting problems. I researched it for a while today and the problems stem from the way the message boards are now linked to Ancestry, in other words your Ancestry user name is now your message board user name. Period. This can be very confusing if, like me, you have been doing this for years and have had several different accounts with Ancestry and the Message Boards. I'm sorry, I wish I could be of some help but you will have to call Ancestry to get this fixed.

Nancy Chamberlin, I tried to reply to your email but I got a response that your mailbox was full. Good to hear from you though. If you email me again I will answer, promise.
Nancy DeVore Williams
Margaret, called Peggy, was born 26 August 1775 (one year later than yours) in Augusta (later Rockingham) County to John Cravens and Margaret Hiatt. John's parents were Robert Cravens and Mary Harrison, whose families were the major founders of Augusta County. Margaret's siblings were Mary b. 1760, Hannah b. 1762, Robert b. 1764, William b. 1766, Joseph b. 1769, and James b. 1773.
Margaret married Joseph Snapp in Rockingham County, Virginia on 1 October 1793. Their children were John, Robert, William Cravens, and Rhoda.
Unfortunately, I had a terrible crash a couple of months ago and lost 11 years worth of work. I haven't fully replaced it yet, but have more on Margaret's children, including dates, which I will get to you. I have a great deal on the Cravens family and will be glad to send you what you need.

I am doing some research on Edward A. Pierce (b. about 1825
in TN and died about 1868 in Mississippi Co., Missouri).
He was a physician. He was married to Emily J. Myers (Miers, etc.) and they had three children (all boys I believe). In my research, I have found George Cravens name
listed with some of the Myers (Miers, etc. ) family. Someone that was helping me do some research said that along with Myers and Stewart, I will probably find that there is a connection to the Cravens with my Pierce family. Do you have any info. about Edward A. Pierce from Mississippi Co., Missouri or his wife, Emily J. Pierce or any of the Myers or Miers family? I don't know how Edward or Emily died. I believe my g-grandfather was their middle son, Thomas. Thomas' good friend and first cousin was T.W. Miers. Thomas and his brothers were orphaned in 1868 and taken in by different families. I would appreciate any help you could give me. Thanks.
