Crawley family in South Boston, VA

I am researching Crawley relatives from South Boston, VA (Halifax Co.), once known as Black Walnut, VA. My grandmother, Mary Frances Crawley was born to Issac "Ike" Crawley and Ethel Satisfield Crawley. They also had 3 other children, Clarence Wendell, Hucles and Alexander. Ike's brother was Joseph Daniel Crawley. Ike and Joseph's father, Alex owned 500 acres of land for his family and I believe also owned a large funeral home business. Clarence moved to Mt. Union, PA until his death; Hucles and Alexander remained in South Boston on the Crawley land until their deaths. My grandmother resides in Arlington, VA. If these relatives sound familiar, please reply.

Re: Henry Humphrey Crawley born abt 1835

Have you found any more evidence of Henry Humphrey Crawley who married Eliza J./Liza Jane Higginbottom/Higginbotham? Was he the son of Caswell Crawley and one of his wives, namely Susan Grove/Gose/Goss? One list from Uncle Carl Killion lists Caswell as "Casral," but I think Caswell is pretty well documented as the proper spelling. I think the family story is that they Henry and Liza Jane divorced, and Eliza went back to Ohio. These Crawleys supposedly descend from Henry Robert Crawley and Mary (Shockley Crawley who are buried with other family members in the Hanna Street Cemetery a/k/a Blackstock Cemetery and a/k/a Old Greencastle City Cemetery. The cemetery has many names but it is on the edge of the DePauw University by the football field. --Maribeth, Indianapolis

Yes - I would love to share information, photos, etc. We're still looking for origins and family connections of Crawleys who came to GA from "Tar Creek", NC around 1809. Their offsprings' names included the usual James, John, William, George, Henry, Charles, David, and Sarah (makes it tough to distinguish), but a little less commonly used: Sanders, Turner, Zachariah, Kisiah, Lucy, and BIRD. Related local family surnames included: Green, Futral, Rogers, Hammond, Pilkington, Coleman, and lots more. I'll get some details together for you.
Linda Crawley Dean

John, Nice to hear from you. Thomas S. served in the civil war as you noted. He was in the battle at Kennesaw, Ga, and others before that, but from that point on, he was in the knoxsville hospital for illness. I have is actual miltary field records. He also returned home in Franklin for a period of time, than re-joined his 123rd in Carolina for the last 2 months of the war. He sat out most of the war. I visited the Indy War museum and can find no record of the flag incident. He also had his rank reduced to private, and was cited as a coward at Kennewaw.

His first wife died about a month before he was mustered (drafted) into the army, leaving 2 children at home. I have not found any record of Thomas participating in the GAR organization. I would appreciate a copy of his pension and any photos you have of him or others.

Regarding the early Crawley line, it is plausable that they moved to Stokes County on land given as a reward for serving in the American Revolution. There are several Crawley men that served in the Virg. army during the reveloution. Stokes County is adjacent to the Virg. border. I hope that someone can explore this. Regards, Bob Gibbs

Juliana was born around 1865 St Giles London. She married in 1897 to Thomas Wood. He was born around 1868 in Kensington London. They had 3 boys by the 1911 census William ( maybe Patrick ) born 1898 St Martin's, Percy Antony born 10/31/99 Tooting and Walter born 1902 Kennington London. When she married Thomas she already had 2 girls Daisy born 1887 Soho London and Julia born 1894 St Giles London. I have a copy of Percy's baptism which is where I got some of the information. The baptism was at St Boniface RC church Tooting. Anyone recognise this group.

Based on the census research I have completed, I found out that David's father Elias Crawley was born 1864 and Elias' father, Stephen, was born in 1820. My grandfather moved from VA and moved to Philadelphia before WWI. Many others from Halifax County also settled in the Philadelphia. I would be interested in learning more about your Crawley relatives from South Boston.

Not sure about Clay County, but the small spot on the map called "Diamond" which has nearly disappeared in the post coal mining era in the neighborhood is in Parke County, not Clay, and she was resident there at the time of her death.
Henry and Mary Crawley are perhaps her GRANDparents...not her parents, presumably the Henry R. and Mary (Shockley) CRAWLEY buried in Old Greencastle Cemetery near the DePauw campus. I am still working on parentage. Also, I have confirmed through family sources that she did not use the final "e" on Bell. This Laura Bell Crawley married Sylvester ("Wes") Killion and resided in both Putnam and Clay Counties, IN. There was a Bell family living in the same part of Putnam County per census, but no known family connection to the middle name.

Do you have info on her parents? --MbF

This is my family also.

James Crawley and Anna Martin are William Crawley's parents. Check 1850 Census record for White Co., Tennessee and you will find the Crawley family. Living near them will be William and Susan Martin. They are Anna's(Her name is spelled different on census)parents.

A lot of your Crawley family are buried in the Fall Creek Cemetery at Strickler, Arkansas.

William Stephen/Samuel Crawley was the son of James and Anna(Martin) Crawley. William was married twice.
1st wife was to Ibba Burgess daughter of George Washington "Wash" Burgess and Charlotte/Charlotta McBride.
2nd wife Marguretta Presley

William S. Crawley was the brother of Solomon R. Crawley/Crowley. Solomon R. married Ibba Burgess' sister Mary Burgess and they were my great grandparents.

Solomon came to Augusta, Butler Co. Kansas and changed the spelling of his name to CROWLEY. My Grandfather was Winfield Scott Crowley who married Una Mary Cloud in Augusta, Butler Co., Kansas.
Their daughter Mildred Una was my Mother and she married Gilbert Franklin Davis in 1936, in Douglass, Butler Co., Kansas.

My daughter and I came to Arkansas and met some of the relatives several years ago. A couple years later we returned and brought my niece and daughter-in-law with us.
There is a grave stone in the Strickler Cem. for William S. and both his wives.

I have some information on the Clanton family that married into the Crawley family.
Kathy

You probably have your answer already, but just in case you don't:
I am not certain if these are the same Samuel/Thomas. The info I have is that they were brothers. I don't know the father, I'm trying to get there. Samuel was the father of Samuel L, who moved to KY. Jerry McClure, jmac23@ipa.net, is a decendate of Thomas and apparently has a lot of info. Mike Gough, ltcolmichaelj@bellsouth.net has info from Samuel. I have copies of both mens' descendants, if you need it, but check with Mike who has it in "sendable" form. Annette Crawley Limoges

Looking for family of Jeremiah Crawley born about 1842 in Bandon, Co. Cork, Ireland. His father was Timothy Crawley and he was a blacksmith. Jeremiah lived at 18 Rodney Street, Cardiff, Wales before he married Mary Linahan in 1866 in Cardiff. Believe Timothy could have been deceased at the time of Jeremiah's marriage. Jeremiah came to England/Wales sometime after his birth and before he married Mary. There was a story that a member of his family fell off the ship on arrival in England and died. Could this have been his father Timothy. Don't know anymore about his family. Can anyone help? Mary Linahan's father was Peter and was a baker.

I see your message has been hanging out there for a few years.

I'm trying to track down info in my great-grand mother, Mary Francis Derring-Crawley or Crawley-Derring. I think the Derring-Crawley thing is that one is her maiden name, and the other might be a step father's name. Her mother was Louisa Mae White, who married a John Derring, but don't know if that was Louisa's second husband or maybe first.

If you've been able to crack any of the Kentucky nuts, I'd be interested in seeing what you know. Thanks.
