Hi Gary

I suppose it could very well have been Gabriel Craze Jnr but he would have been just 16 in 1722 when he wed. Although perfectly acceptable I just wonder how likely though. Records also show Gabriel Jnr was buried aged 24 on 3/5/1730.

I haven't done much on the Craze family for a while as, like everyone else, I reached a brick wall with Gabriel Snr. I've been busy with the Farlow family, as my great great uncle, Samuel Farlow, was one of the 75 soldiers identified recently at Fromelles in France following DNA testing.

Anyway, there must be a reason why I thought Ann How was Gabriel Snrs second wife following the death of Elizabeth. I'll get my notes out and see if I can read up and work out why I came to that conclusion.

Kim

Hi Kim, I'm based in Houston, TX. My branch came to the New York area in 1891, eventually moving to Texas in the 1920s.

I saw your note about Ann How, perhaps the second wife of Gabriel after his first wife's death. I was curious, Gabriel had a son named Gabriel (Jr? II?) born in 1706. Could it have been that Gabriel who married Ann How?

Thanks, Gary Craze

Hi Gary
Thanks for getting in touch, where are you based? My Craze line begins with Fanny Craze who married into the Prideaux family early 1830's. It was one of Fanny's children who came to live in Wolverhampton, where I still live today. It seems as though most Craze research grinds to a halt at Gabriel. I have some paperwork that may take Elizabeth Rice back a little further, I'll retrieve it from one of the files for you and let you have the details. Kim

Steve

Looking for a birth/christening event for Elizabeth Rice I searched IGI 1670 with 20 years either way. I worked on the assumption her dob would roughly be the same as Gabriels and she was born somewhere in Somerset. Eight turned up. Two of the enteries had no further details but gave birth dates of 1681 and 1682 in Dunster, I deduce that could be the Elizabeth required.

The hypothesis I had formed when I studied the details available against each entry was that the Elizabeth Rice (1,2, and 6) was the mother of (7 & 8) and that possibly Elizabeth Rice (4 & 5) was the niece of (1,2 & 6) and the cousin of (7 & 8) and that Elizabeth Rice (3) was the sister of a William and Roger Rice.........problem is I have no idea how I worked that hypothesis out now!!

If you do have any pearls of wisdom, let me know.

Hi Steve

Nice to hear from you.

I have looked at the paperwork I have and can see that Betty was an elder sister of my ancester John Craze. Most of my information comes from either IGI or from the web pages for somerset found on Genuki - a number of parish registers have kindly been transcribed.

According to my research their parents were, as you say, John Craze and Joan Thomas, they married 15th October 1737.

I will list below what siblings I could find for John

Betty c26-12-1738 died 28-12-1738
Betty c5-4-1740 (your Betty)
Joan c12-5-1743 who I think died aged 16 18-11-1759
John c21-2-1744 died 24-2-1744
William c 1746 (married Joan Catlin)
Twins Joseph c22-10-1751 died 17-11-1751 and Mary c22-10-1751 died 10-12-1751
John c9-3-1749 (my relative) - he married Joan (?Hole) in 1768 and died 20-7-1811.

The parents of all these children were Gabriel Craze and Elizabeth Rice. They married 23-1-1703 but unfortunately Elizabeth died 31-12-1717 and I believe Gabriel went on to marry an Ann How September 1722. Children of Gabriel and Elizabeth are recorded as:

Ann c15-9-1703 died 6-10-1703
John c25-10-1704 died 20-10-1710 aged 6
Gabriel c13-11-1706 died 3-5-1730 aged 24
Richard c14-5-1709 married Mary Chillcott 4-6-1733
John (our John)
Mary c 18-11-1713 died 14-10-1713
William 16-12-1716

On IGI I found a couple of dates for the birth of Gabriel Craze but I think he may have been born 1678 and died in 1751 & as far as I am aware all this took place in the Dunster area. This is where I have come to a dead end with the Craze family. It may be the story will continue in a parish other than Dunster but I have to confess to having put this on one side to concentrate more on the Shropshire side of the family.

I think I can continue with Elizabeth Rice a little for you at some point although I found the search results for Elizabeth very confusing. I have tried to make sense of them as best I could but this is over 12-months ago and I need to find out the notes for this - I will post this information for you when I can sort it all out.

If you find any further information out about Gabirel I would grateful for the information. I am happy for you to have my email address KIM-BAILEY@sky.com.

Are you local to Somerset? Further down the Craze line one of the daughters married into the Prideaux family and they moved to Bristol in the early 1830's. From their one of the grandsons moved up to Wolverhampton, where I still live today.

Regards. Kim

My ancestor is Betty (Elizabeth) Craze who was born in Dunster, Somerset 08/April/1740. She married Samuel Griffith in Dunster in 1764. Her Father was John Craze who married Joan Thomas 15/Oct/1737, also I believe in Dunster. I am unable to help you with any other information on the Craze family, as this is as far as I have got so far. I would however be very grateful if you have any information on the Craze family, especialy relations of the above, that would would help me to get earlier than 1737 for this line.

I would be very grateful for any information you may have.

Steve

Gabriel Craze - Somerset

Has anyone a connection to the Craze family in and around Dunster in Somerset, England? We have reached and come to an abrupt halt with Gabriel Craze born circa 1678 and I would be interested to know if anyone out there has passed this point in any of their research. I did understand from a fellow researcher of the Craze family that this is often where the story seems to end unfortunately. Gabriel appears to have married his first wife Elizabeth Rice in 1703 and as she sadly died in 1717 we think he married his second wife Ann How in 1722. We have mapped out what we think would be an outline of the Craze family from in and around Dunster late 1600's onwards but I do have details of some Craze's from the Dunster area that I cannot logically link into the bigger family picture but must fit in somehow.

If anyone has any details of any of the Craze's, or the families associated with them from the time period of interest, I would love to hear from you.

Kim

Beatrice married my grandfather, Si[y]dney Wales, and moved to the United States [Michigan] in the early 1900's. According to Emma James, who is related to the Yeo side, Louis and Eliza are listed in the 1901 UK census.

They were living in Calhoun County near Pittsboro, MS. They had one son (that I know about), Enoch Evander Murphree, b. 1847. Emily Elizabeth's father was John Craze and her mother was named Rhoda. Does any of this have any connection to your questions? Emily Craze, according to family legend, was at least a quarter native American, and considerably younger than her Murphree husband.
What you need to do is locate the death write up and death
records and md records for your grandmother.
You will need a date of birth ect to locate your grandmother.
I an not sure if Penponds has a parish, or you will have to
locate her in a larger parish near by. I know that the name
is found in Camborne and Gwinear records. Look also
for the spelling of Crase. If you can get your grandmother
or her parents in 1871 in Cornwall, that census is available
on line, as is the 1881.
