Re: Dutch Creason school teacher

Harold "Dutch" Creason was the principal and eight grade teacher at Fall Creek Heights elementary school during the mid-1900s in southern Madison County, Indiana. The nearest community was Ovid/New Columbus. I went to the school from 1951 to 1958. All of older siblings went to this school as well and had Mr. Creason as a teacher. He had nothing but good things to say about my family especially since three of the boys were great basketball players. Mr. Creason was the coach as well.

We often heard stories of how Mr. Creason would discipline students -- he would smack them out of their seats. Also, there were stories of he and a parent getting into arguments and fist fights. How true, I don't know. I do know that he was feared and respected. Teaching in this school was the only job he had since he graduated from High school in the early 1900's, so I was told. He taught here from about 1917 to the late 1960's, I believe.

I liked Mr. Creason very much and I never saw his anger in our class except on one or two occasions with one or two students. I thought he was not like what I had heard. He was a good teacher and a kind person. We learned much from him and none of us were afraid of him.

He would tell me about Shirley, an older brother of mine, who died from lockjaw at age 13 in the mid to late 1930's. Mr. Creason said Shirley was the best basketball player he had ever seen. And then he showed movie pictures from past classes and pointed out Shirley to me in front of our whole class.

I remember one time when my brother next oldest to me went to a fall party at Mr. Creason's home on Indiana 36 near Mechanicsburg.

Interestingly, the one thing I most remember that he taught us was to begin each day by drinking a large glass of water. He said it was the best thing we could do for our health. I practice this still to this day and have read recently about the benefits of this practice for weight loss and health -- drink plenty of water!

In my opinion this man was well known and liked by most people in that community. He taught through many generations. It was a privilege to know him and his influence for good on my life and that of my family, as well as on countless others and their families for over 50 years in the community of Adams Township, Madison County, Indiana.

He received such advantages for education as were afforded in those days, attending school and working on the farm.

When he reached the age of twenty-four he married, February 22, 1872, Miss Mary E. Proctor, daughter of Eldridge and Nancy Bailey Proctor, both of Bourbon County, Kentucky. After his marriage he was engaged in farming in Ray County for five years, and in 1877 came to Daviess County, purchased a farm in Sheridan Township, and since that time has been principally engaged in farming and stock raising. Mr. and Mrs. Creason have five children: Mary A., Nancy A., William E., James L., and an infant.

Stumped on the others.
Dave B
Christin, Yes we have heard many possible names for Susannah/Susan. That was why we went to Ray county. The record book says Mahan.
I worked the Mahan line about 2 years ago and came up with one possible option, it wasn't very likely so it isn't in our tree, I will have to find my notes and get back with you on this but not on this board. I think theory's some times become confused with facts...
Thanks for the offer of the census but I finally found it. 4 hours later. It was indexed under Leagun on the sight I was searching. Found it in another sight pretty much right away. So much for soundex.
Kerry

Kerry,

I can email you a copy of the census record if you would like...please let me know. I also have a copy of William's death cert which states his father as Henry, but unfortunately no mother is listed. Another negative is that his wife is listed as Mrs. W. T. Creason...I haven't put forth the effort to research her name to date. I do not have William marrying Sada. I have a copy, of which I can also email you, of Johnny and Sada's marriage license.

I will go through all of the census records I have and check for William being listed with Henry. I'm not sure if both Johnny and William shared the same mother or father to be honest. I'm still trying to time line who was living in the same house, where they were and when...lots of work to do. :)

I believe Henry's first wife was Martha Elizabeth Agee. Martha was born about 1853 in Missouri and died about 1885-86 when Johnny was just 5 years old. She could have passed away during or shortly after William's birth if she died in 1886, which is I believe when William was born. *This is pure speculation on my part. After Martha's death, I believe Henry married Fannie. I know she was a step-mother to Johnny and William because that is the way she is listed in the 1900 census record.

I've been a bit confused about Susan Mahan. I have come across her name in my research for Walter Creason. I have listed that he (Walter) married a Susannah, but the last name is what confuses me. Some state she was a Masters, Mahan, Mahim, or Donahue.

I have a copy of the 1860 census where Susannah is living with Walter and their children, Thomas, Katta (Katherine), Henry and a John Masters. I do not know the exact relation of John to the family...perhaps the son of Susannah from a previous marriage or a relative. I also have the 1870 census listing Walter, Susannah, Henry and a 12 year old named Haenly Benjamin/Benjamin Haenly. I could have Haenly misspelled, the handwriting is difficult to decipher. By the 1880 census, Susannah is listed as a widow. I believe Walter died between 1870 and 1880...he was 67 years old in the 1870 census. (They were living in Ray County, MO during the above listed census records.)

R/

Christin

Christin, I have looked everywhere for this census, thanks for clarifying where they were. I will look agian.
Also thanks for all the other info. I had found Johnny's draft card and noticed the dates differed also. As for William I'm finding only his TX death record. Can't find him on a census at all. Do you know if he married and if so who?
I'm building an Online tree for them to help me keep it all straight. Maybe I could find him (Wm) if I knew his wifes name. Or one of his wives.. Do you have him marrying Sada or it this just more of my confusion?
Purely speculation on my part but maybe John and Wm were half brothers? What do you think on this? Perhaps they shared the same mother but different fathers? I'm trying keep an open mind...:)
As for Henry Creason, as my husband said his mother was Susan Mahan. We don't have much more on her than that. We were able to take a few trips to Ray co. to confim the marriage but the county was in the process of microfilming their records to send them downstate so our acsess was limited.
I believe she may have been a Mahan widow. Mahan was not a name I find near Ray Co.
I'll get back to you soon, we need to keep in touch.
Kerry

One more note:

Although Johnny Edward went by the name Johnny Fagan during his childhood and part of his adulthood, he eventually changed his name back to Creason. I have been told, no proof as of yet, that he changed his name back when he left Sada in the 1930s. My father and I plan on making a trip to the cemetery, which is about 1 1/2 hours from the Dallas, TX area, to photograph his headstone sometime this year. My father has told me that it lists Johnny as John or Johnny Creason. I look forward to documenting this information.

As far as William Thomas, I do not know if he ever went by the Fagan last name as an adult. According to his death certificate, he was a Creason. William lived and died in Edinburg, TX which is near the border of Mexico, located by McAllen and Brownsville, by the coast. He is buried in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

I'd like to think this information separates the two from being the same person, though I do not at this point, put it past anyone to "borrow" someone's name for a bit. :)

Hi Kerry,

I have a copy of the 1900 U.S. Census record listing Henry Feagan, wife Fannie and two sons Edward and Willie. The census was taken on 23 June 1900 in STATE: Indian Territory COUNTY: Choctaw Nation (Oklahoma.) I believe Henry changed his name sometime between 1870-1880. He is listed in the 1860 census as Henry Creason, 1870 census as Henry Creason and the 1880 census as Henry Fagan. I believe I have a document with the spelling of Fagin as well...don't hold me to this one though until I double check my records.

According to Sada May Smith Fagan, Johnny Edward's birth date was 17 Feb 1880 born in Black Rock, AR. *The 1900 census states his b-day to be Feb 1882 born in AR.

The birth/death info I have for William Thomas is a bit skewed. In the 1900 census it states William was born July 1886 in Texas, though his death certificate states he was born 17 Feb 1874 in Black Rock, AR. This may be where the confusion about Johnny and William comes from. William Thomas died in Edinburg, Hildago County, TX on 8 Oct 1960.

I too am confused by the Johnny E. and William T. mix-up. I have them listed as brothers. I do not have much info for William. I do however own a compilation of stories by and about Sada May Smith Fagan, wife of Johnny Edward. According to this manuscript, Sada and Johnny had the following children: Eddie Bridwell (my great grandfather), William Thomas (I believe he was named after his Uncle), Teddy Henry Pinkney (I believe named after his grandfathers) and Birdie Youtha May (named after cousins.)

I DO NOT have records indicating Johnny Edward and William Thomas are the same person. I welcome any documents proving this.

I would enjoy knowing more about Henry's line. I believe his father to be Walter Creason. I do not have confirmed information regarding his mother.

Also, I would like more info about Fannie. I have her birth date as March 1867 in MO.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,

Christin

Hello, I've been working on Henry Creasons line with my husband Dennis. He told me about these post. In one of them someone said they had found Henry Fagan in 1900 with his sons. Could you tell me where they were?
Since it was stated that Johnny was born 1882, and Willie born 1887, were they both born in Texas?
I'm still not sure that this is Henry Creason. Could you tell us what it was that led your grandmother to him?
In one posting Christin said Youtha was the daughter of Johnnie and Sada, and Kris said she was the daughter of William Thomas... I'm really confused. Are these two the same person? Or could William be some one totally different and maybe the son of one of the many Henry Creason's?
My husband and I have Henry's line back 3 more generations so it would be wonderful to link this up.
I would love to hear from the both of you.
Also I have found quite a bit on Fannie if you are interested.
Kerry
They also had a daughter Elizabeth Jean Creason born July 12, 1862 who married an Isaac Green Grindstaff. Could this be a person from you line?

I very much believe William Thomas Creason is the brother to my g-g grandfather Johnny Edward Creason/Fagan. I do not know if both men share the same mother. I have a manuscript from Sada May Smith Fagan (wife of Johnny Edward) that states Johnny's mother (Martha E. Agee) died when he was about 5 years old which would have been about 1885.

I have a copy of William Thomas Creason's death certificate which has Henry listed, but not a name for his mother unfortunately.

I also believe William went by the nickname, Willie. According to a census record taken on 23 June 1900 in Oklahoma, Henry was already using the last name of FEAGAN and living with him was Fannie (a 2nd second wife), and his two sons Edward and Willie (believed by me to be Johnny Edward and William.) I do not know what Fannie's maiden name was nor do I know what her given first name might have been, since the name Fannie was generally used as a nickname, sometimes for Frances. I will make a note to research the last name of Fox for her...maybe it will turn up something.

I wish I knew from whom the Fagan name was taken, I have NO idea at this time. I've kept an open mind thinking that it may have been a distant relative or even a neighbor from which the name came. I do think it quite odd that although Johnny Edward went by Fagan his whole life, his head stone reads Creason. I will be visiting family in Texas this year and I plan on making the drive to the cemetery where Johnny Edward is buried.

-Facts about Johnny Edward-

Johnny Edward and Sada May had four children together:

- 14 Nov 1904 Eddie Bridwell Fagan, born in Hart, OK
(his birth name might have been Edward, he is also my great grandfather)

- 19 July 1906 William Thomas Fagan, born in Wynnewood, OK
(most likely named after his Uncle)

- 2 Jan 1908 Teddy Henry Pinkney Fagan, Pauls Valley, OK

-26 July 1909 Birdie Youtha May Fagan, born Stratford, OK
(excerpt from the manuscript about Sada referring to this birth...

"We lived at Stratford, Garvin County, Oklahoma when our fourth child was born, a baby girl - dark with brown eyes, born 26 July 1909. I wanted to name her Birdie, after my cousin, and Ed wanted to name her Youtha, so we named her Birdie Youtha May, so we called her Birdie for a long time."

I was told by my father that Johnny Edward abandoned his family. I do not know why he did exactly, maybe from bad debts. (this seems to be a running theme) I'm going to find the time one day to watch home movies from the mid 80s where my grandfather, Argyle Fagan sits in his recliner talking about his childhood. I'm hoping they will give me a clue or some insight to what went on with his grandfather. I remember some of my grandfather's stories which ranged from living in dirt caves to Indian relations.

I would love to hear your stories about all of the debts and Johnny Edward; by the way, my youngest brother was named after him.

I have many more leads and uncertainties that I could share with you, though it will take time to sort through them. :)

If you would like further communication, you can contact me at christin.fagan@gmail.com.

Take care,

Christin Fagan

Hi again!
I checked my information. I actually have a note in my records that say my Susannah Donohue (married to Walter Creason) could be the same as Susanah Mahan. However, I believe it is my own note and was purely conjecture at the time. However, I do know that our Henry Calhoun Creason died in Boswell, Oklahoma...a strong case for at least relation to your Henry! I also have Walter's birth place as Ray County, Missouri. I am not sure how I got that, though.

What I wonder is whether Henry Calhoun Creason could have had a second wife (or third since I do have him possibly married to a Miss Fox after being married to Martha Elizabeth Agee...she died in 1885/1886 in Arkansas)

Do you have anything more concrete?

Kris

Henry Calhoun Creason

Me again!
I looked it up to see what I have. I do have Henry Calhoun Creason married to Susannah Donohue with William Thomas Creason, Sr. and daughter as their children. Doesn't mean they didn't have more, I just don't have them listed! So, yeah! You have added to my research! And for Denell, Henry Calhoun Creason died in Boswell, Oklahoma! (Born in Ray County, Missouri). So it looks like we're all related!
Would you mind sharing any particulars you have on Henry Calhoun and his family with me? That would be great!
Just FYI, in my notes I have that he moved from Missouri to Oklahoma and changed his name to avoid the draft. Fagan was though at one time to be his mother's name, but that appears highly unlikely. More likely was his step-father's name, but I have not confirmed that or even looked very hard.

And here's another strange note that I have! It looks like my great, great grandfather, William Thomas Creason (son of Henry Calhoun) had a little nickname that he used: Johnny Edward Fagan! Yes, it was to avoid back debts! Looks like we are more related than I first thought! Johnny Edward was reportedly the name of an uncle that he admired and that's why he chose that name.

What was your line through William/Johnny? It appears that William/Johnny was married in the neighborhood of 6 or 7 times (although he was never divorced from his first wife...quite a double life! His daughter, through his marriage to Sada May Smith (first wife), was my great, great grandmother. I knew her well! She didn't die until I was in college some 20 years ago.

I even know the details of the back debts! It's a great story! :)

We should talk!

Hi!
It wouldn't surprise me if they were related. Christin's and my Creasons (through Henry Calhoun Creason) were in Oklahoma...at least some of his children were. I am not sure where Boswell is, but if it's anywhere near the Texas border, chances are good! I don't have my information terribly handy right at the moment, but I can look it up a little later. I actually want to say the surname Mahan sounds awfully familiar, so maybe I even have her listed. I'll check it out!

Hi Chrisin!
We are most definitely related! I know all about the name change. My grandmother tracked it down many years ago. My great grandmother was Youtha May Fagan. (She died just a few years ago.) Youtha's father was William Thomas Creason who would (I believe) have been Johnny Edward's brother. My records are on my laptop at work or I could tell you more.

Have you researched the line much? I have quite a bit of information! Happy to share!
