I am researching all Creers and have received from one of your relatives a (photo)copy of a book on the Edward Creer family published by the Creer family of Utah edited by Leland H Creer ca 1953. Having looked at this there do not appear to be any photos of Mary Helen (Mell) Creer etc on their own - although the large group photo from 1905 does contain Edward Creer jr and his wife Sophia and Mell. I assume that you must have a copy of this book or have access to it with one of your relatives. There is also a supplement to this book with a section on Edward Creer junior and family.

I am in the (lengthy) process of compiling a book on the complete history of the Creers from before 1500 onwards and was wondering if you have decent copies of any of the original photos of the early members of Edward Creer's family that you would be willing to share with me.

Please contact me offboard if you wish.

regards

john creer

Re: Origins of the name Creer

In the early 1800's the very poor economic conditions affecting agriculture on the Isle of Man (and Ireland - the potato famine) as well as a widespread cholera epidemic, caused many Manx people to leave the Island to seek better lives elsewhere. The first place they settled was in the North of England, just a few hours sail away across the Irish Sea to Liverpool. The economic conditions there were not much better and so many people, English, Scots and Irish emigrated to the USA in search of better things. Your Creer family were living in Preston in the North of England at this time and became very early converts to the Church of the Latter Day Saints. Your ancestor Edward Creer and his family emigrated from Liverpool in 1847 with a group of Mormon pioneers to sail to New Orleans and on then to "Zion" to seek a better life. Utlimately this family arrived in Salt Lake City in 1854 and settled nearby in Spanish Fork, and the rest of their history you will know. A number of other Manx families followed a similar route at the same time.

I have just been carrying out a DNA study into the Creer family (www.creer.co.uk) and this shows that all Creers are related and are descended from one man, probably named McCrere, who lived on the Isle of Man in around 1300. It is likely that this McCrere came over to the IOM around this time from Scotland.

Mary Ann Creer born in Braddan, Isle of Man, in 1829 the only daughter of Edward Creer and Sarah Dickenson. Following the death of Edward in 1838 Mary Ann and 3 of her brothers moved to Australia. She married Archibald Maclean on 25 Nov 1857 at Pitt St. in Sydney - and died 2 years later (in childbirth?) on 8 Oct 1859 at Pyrmont, Sydney. I do not know whether she had any children. I have a large amount of information on this Creer family and her ancestors and there are many descendants still in Australia and the Isle of Man. Please advise what your connection is and if you would like more information please contact me separately by email.

cheers

John Creer

Sorry I cannot find any Joseph Creer in my records or in the US censuses. There is however a record in the 1910 US census of a Hazel Creer b 1891 in Michigan, living with her sister Mary (b 1897 in Michigan) and mother Anna b 1870 - all in Vergennes Township, Kent, Michigan. The census record implies that mother Anna was widowed - as in 1910 she was named Underhill - and her two daughters are recorded as being stepdaughters of the head of houshold, a Mr Underhill. That's all I can find at the moment. Good luck,

John

Cindy,

The 1880 US census shows Lewis Creer b 1832 and his wife Joanna b 1832 living in Michigan together with children Edward and Ida. There is also a Louis Creer b 1860 living with them - could this be your Lee Creer?
This census shows Lewis Creer as having been born in Germany - in this case I would expect he was originally named Creher or Kreher, or another germanic name, and the name evolved/was changed into Creer on arrival in the USA. Creer is a family name specific to the Isle of Man - see my website www.ballacreer.com for more information if you are interested. I have a comprehensive database of Creer family history records.

cheers from the UK - John Creer

Paul Creer - Attn Deborah Thompson

Deborah Thompson

With reference to your tree on Ancestry.com - Paul Creer is my gg grandfather and so it seems we are related. I have a large database of Creer family history records and a website dedicated to Creer family history www.ballacreer.com which you may be interested in.

I have a large amount of data on our line and would be very happy to share it with you. However I do have good evidence to support the fact that Paul's parents were John Creer and Sarah Taggart and not as you describe. Your ancestor Thomas Henry Creer was one of 13 children - his sister Ann was my g grandmother.

I have had one email to your address, which you posted on Ancestry.com ,already returned as address not valid - so would be very grateful to hear from you at least to confirm receipt of this message.

cheers from the UK

John A Creer
Origins of the name Creer

The name Creer orginates from the Isle of Man - in the Sea between between the North of England and Northern Ireland. The earliest examples of the name I have found have been from around 1500-1600 where the name was spelt McCrere - which then evolved to Crere and then Creer. Kathy Creer in Australia - who is also researching her Creer ancestors - offers also an earlier possible origin of the name at :http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Oaks/1022/creer2.html

There are now about 50 Creer families still living in the IOM and others in the North of England. Some Creers emigrated to Australia and the US during the 1800's and there does appear to be a pocket of ex-Manx settlers in Utah.

Regards from the UK
