(I've just found your posts during my search for the Crisp/Crispe line). I have George Arthur Crispe b.Q2 1873 in Litcham. He was the son of George Crispe (1845-1943) and Rose Hannah Vincent (1843 - 1914). George was the great-grandson of Hammond Crispe (1772 - 1858), and I am Hammond's 3g-grandson via another line. I have more details of the Crispes who seem to originate in Little Fransham and I'd be happy to pass any details I have.

I don't have a Crispe who emigrated, however, but he may be one for whom I'm lacking details.

Paul

Hi, I am trying to research for my family on my grandmother's side. Her Grand father was Thomas R. Overton and her mohter was Della Cameren. I am needing more information on indian heritage on my grandmother's side. I remember great grandmother Della and her husband Jack (arthur jackson camren) doing indain chants when I was a child. I was told that all the documents were blown away or were in a fire with the roll numbers. I am not sure what the connection is between Eliza Jane Hll but I was informed that she had a roll number. I would really like to connect with my heritage. My grandmother is Ruth Margret Bennett. She has two sisters, Helen and Sadie, and a brother, Donald. If we could connect I would appreciate it. Thank you Cheryl Martin

I went on line with "Chesley Crisp" name and found:
"Crisp Photo Album, Page 3" Was able to copy and paste, but only the words took. If you wish, please *Google or *Yahoo "Chesley Crisp" to see if you can see the remarkable photos--especially Bonnie. There is a Mansil Crisp with his wife, Mattie. Hope you can find and view. *Notice the different spelling of "Crisp" on last two lines. EJE

**These photos were contributed by Bonnie Thomas Chaffin . They are her ancestorstors. Bonnie descends from Chesley Crisp ,1805 NC and Mahala?, the Blount Co. TN Chesley Crisp.

Believed to be George Washington Crisp, 1848-1911, and 2nd wife Susan Ratledge. George is the son of Chesley Crisp, 1805. Bonnie descends from George's 1st wife, Susannah Hutsell. (this may be 1st wife) Henry Washington Crisp, 1883-1940, and Lula Rebecca Hale Drake, 1884-1974. Henry is a grandson of George Washington Crisp Lestal Edwin Crisp, 1907-1986. Lestal is Bonnie's grandfather.

This lovely lady is Bonnie's mother
Bonnie Kate Crisp. Taken mid-1940's
It is her engagement photo.

These photos were contributed by Doyle Thomas. Doyle is a descendent of William W. and Elizabeth (Matthews?) Crisp, b 1783. It is believed that William is the son of Samuel Crisp b. 1755, who was the son of William Crisp, 1695/1700-1783.

Family of William Crisp, 1783, seated center front, and Elizabeth (Matthews?) seated left. Mansil Crisp is the boy back row, right. Family story is Elizabeth was full Indian and only 4' tall. Photo taken from painting of Mansil Crisp and wife Mattie, later in life.

Eric B. Cripps, decendent of William Cripes, b. ca1696, Bampton, Oxfordshireshire, England.and Jane Pinder.

Return to Resources page

The Crisps that were from Graham Co., NC are the descendants of Wm Crisp b. 1794 SC s/o Wm Bray Crisp.
Bray Crisp himsel was in Burke NC at one time before he died in Haywood NC.

Bray Crisp might have been a realtion to "old" Chesley Crisp of Burk NC, likely a brother or cousin.

I think Chesley Crisp md Mahala LNU in TN (likely Blount Co., TN). Reason being that there first child James was born Aug 1836 in Blount TN. So likely Chsley md Mahala sometime in 1835.
Both Chesley Crisp and likely his step mother Sarah (Prock) Crisp appear on the Blount Co., TN 1837 Tax List.

I think both Chesley & Sarah were in TN by at least 1835.
They were in Burke Co., NC in 1830 in HH of older Chesley Crisp. Sarah is possibly the older female age 40-50/b. 1780-90 and Chesley was either the male age 20-30/b. 1800-1810 or one of the two males age 15-20/b. 1810-15.

Question is... when and where did the elder Chesley die (bet 1830 & 1837) and when did Sarah and son/step-son Chesley move to TN (bet 1830 & 1835).

Stecoah Valley, N.C. NOW we are getting closer! Besides England, Stecoah Valley, N.C. is like the first chapter of The Book Of Genesis.
Thank you for your information. You are very good. I have compared the two Chesley Crisp who ended up in Tennessee and I am working on an idea that perhaps the two were cousins. I am trying to figure out if the older Chesley had brothers and sisters. This makes sense to me. One named after his father and a nephew named after his uncle. Our Chesley 1802/05 married Mahala? in N.C.,moved to Blount Co.,Tn. and he does not appear after 1870.The last I have found on Mahala was 1891-92 in the Knoxville Tn. City Directory as a boarder. It states she is the widow of Chesley. She lived with her daughter,Margart Sherrell in 1880. There were Crisps and Sherrells living in the Stecoah area of N.C. near Graham. In 1840, a land grant was taken by Edward Delozier. The Ditmores and Birchfields lived close by also. These same names show up also after Chesley and Mahala settled in Blount Co.,Tn. Folks traveled in groups from one place to another,so I do believe this is where our Chesley was before he showed up in Blount. I am not sure where he was before then. So this Chesley, some folks have stated could be the stepson of Sarah Prock 75, who shows up in the Blount Co.Tn. census of 1850. Warren Co.,where the other Chesley died is not too far from from the Blount Co. Chesley.I wonder if other families have a puzzle like this? It drives me crazy but I love it. This information about Graham Co. N.C. are from the Graham Co. Centennial Book 1872-1972.

I see that at some stage you have been doing some research on this pairing.

I was wondering what information you found. I understand they were convicts.. do you know what they were convicted of?

Best Regards,

Mike Gordon
Have found this info on Chesley Crisp and Sarah Warren with names of children. John Crisp is one child. There is much more info written below. In my Tree, I have William Crisp, Bray Crisp and John Crisp. *There are a # of "William Crisp" and "John Crisp" names. Example: William Mansell, William Bray, etc. The same with "John." Please let me know if you receive the link below with my message. Thanks--and Happy New Year!

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~jemjr/470....
If this Hamilton is Joshua Hamilton Crisp then he was born abt 1844 and died aft 1860 (Blount Co., TN census). Then his wife is the "Hairet Crisp" also in Cloyds Creek Cem.

I have not yet researched the brothers of the elder Chesley Crisp.
In my extensive census research I think the elder Chesley was born abt 1763. I think he is the Chesley of 1790 Wilkes & 1800 Burke NC. Bordering Wilkes at the time was Burke where you find a Wm Crisp, Bray Crisp, and a John Crisp, possibly brothers and/or cousins.

Chesley Crisp /b. 1805 (of Warren TN) md Sarah Warren in 1827 in Caswell NC. This Chelsy may be the son of Thomas Crisp (md to Frances Burch) of 1810 Caswell NC who had a male son b. 1800-1810 in HH.
Also in 1810 Caswell was a John Crisp (md to Janey Burch).
I think they were brothers. I think both were the sons of John Crisp who died in Caswell in 1794. This is the John Crisp of 1777 Caswell NC. Caswell bordered VA near Halifax & Lunenburg VA where a John & Chesley are found in 1753 & 1764 respectively.

That probably is Joshua Hamilton son of Chesley and Mahala buried at Cloyds Creek Cem.Hamiltons wifes name was Hariet. W.C b.Feb20,1867 had a wife Sindy b.1872 who should be buried there also. Also,I may be behind on information, but did the older Chesley Crisp have brothers named William and James? If so, then are the two Chesleys, one who died in Warren and Chesley who lived in Blount co. cousins by chance? Each named after the elder Chesley?

I sent you an e-mail before I retrieved this posting so you have a message in your box. I do believe that all of the Crisps buried there at that church are of the same family. I will check out Harriet? The stones are really dirty so I am going to take some cleaner there and see if I can make out some of the names better. My dad was a stone cutter and he told me what to use so that if there is any kind of finish left on the stone it won't hurt it. I doubt there is much left.

Sorry for the delay replying to your inquiry.I do not have specific dates on her birth or death. The last I have is that her address was on Euclid Ave. in Knoxville,Tn.I found this in a directory. I went to Cloyds Creek Church the first of Dec. looking to see if by chance her grave was there.I will have to go back with a wire brush and cleaner to clean off the stones because they are so molded you can't read the inscriptions. I did find Rice and W.B. Crisp which was legible. I have a feeling Chesley may be buried there also. The reason is because the cemetery is where they lived in Eusebia. The first graves are older than the
church so I don't know if there are records. Will work on that too. The church was established @1876. The Crisps tombstones start under a tree near the entrance and are the oldest so far as I have been able to see except for the ones w/o names and dates. Mahala may have been buried near her daughter that she lived with since it was so far away from Friendsville. I don't know yet. But there are several names in the cemetery that are attached to the Crisp family One in particular is the Roach family.I have a photo of Daisy and Gladys. They are the daughters of Allie,or Alice Crisp who m. a Roach. So this somewhat confirms that these are our Crisp family in this cemetery.I just have to try and do some cleaning to better read the inscriptions.

I will contact some of the Crisp's in Henryetta, Oklahoma and see if they can give me the run down on the crisp family lineage. I will let you know what I find out.

No, the only Crisps I know of are from Texas..in the Longview, San Antonio, Lavernia areas, although they have spread out somewhat in the Pacific north and south west as well. I would like to know where they were before then..I'm not sure about any Indian ancestry, although some in the family especially my grandma's brother look very Indian it could just as well be African ancestry that gave him those gorgeous cheekbones :)

My Great grandmother was named Nannie Crisp, She lived in Sapulpa, Oklahoma for many years. but was originally from Texas, I think Sulphur Springs Texas. In her early years she married Thomas Matthews also of Sapulpa. To this union they had many children. I was told that Nannie was also part choctaw Indian. she had a sister named Annie.
She later moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico to stay with her daughter Vera Mims, where she passed in 1985. Throughout the years, there has been numerous mentions of a 'Rolly' or 'rollie' Crisp, and a John Crisp as well. Althogh I have never met any of the crisp's except a lady by the name of Delilah(crisp)Durham, there are several members of the Crisp family in Tulsa,Grayson,Henryetta and Oklahoma
City Oklahoma. Hope this help you out some. I would like to hear from you.

You can email me at dmathews1@hotmail.com
