Trying to reach sduncan43. If you lived most of your life in Valpo then you didn't live too far from cousins you didn't know you had! The Irony ! I too am a descendant of Daniel Criswell.Via Marcus L.Criswell jr. and Ella Criswell.( ancestry .com doesn't list it but they had 11 children and 9 of them grew into adulthood and there are easily now well over 200 of us..One branch lives in Valpo! I believe that Elizabeth Bolerjack was half Shawnee and if you do a bit of research into the Moravian missionaries ( Bolerjack is a moravian surname) The Moravians converted many of the shawnee to Christianity but then there was a terrible massacre...as horrific as can be imagined. Just Google the Moravian missionaries and the slaughter of the Shawnee you'll start to see why it's such a big secret to keep Native Blood hush hush. Please send me an e-mail as I'm on the free trial thingy and it wont let me send you one directly. I guess I got 14 days to connect with some distant cousins.

Criswells of Pennsylvania

I am trying to find out if there are any Criswell relatives left in Pennsylvania. The farthest I have is my 4x great grandfather David Criswell 1816-? and he married Eliza Jane Frazer 1822-1867. His son James Andrew Criswell 1864-1909 was born in Pennsylvania but moved to Missouri. I was wondering if anyone could help me out? I can't find anything after David. I don't know who his parents are, though I do know his father is from Ireland and his mother is from Pennsylvania. I don't know if he had any brothers or sisters, and if they had kids or anything.

I did and I have looked throught my files. There is not Elizabeth born 1796. It would be unusual if our line were in Ohio. Most went to Illinois. However, there is one son who married and have children that I have never been able to trace. I am sorry I can't be of more help. Can you describe the picture to me? If she died in 1859, I think it would have had to been a tintype photo.

I am starting to work on my line again and trying to get my information organized. It has been a very difficult line for me because of all the names being used each generation and the different ways Criswell is misspelled.
Thank you,
Sandy

Hi Richard,
I have attached the picture I have of the person I think is Elizabeth Bolejack Criswell. It was in my parents pictures that I didn't see until 2007. It says gramma criswell. I have no idea who wrote the name. I have been given her birth date as Feb. 11, 1796 in Washington County, Ohio. She died Oct. 26, 1859 in Rockport, IN. She is buried in the Whitehouse Cemetery, Chrisney, Spencer Co, IN. She married Daniel Andrew Criswell June 7, 1817 in Kentucky. He changed his last name from Croswell to Criswell in 1813. Daniel was in White county Illinois and the head of the household in 1830. They lived by Joel and John Bolerjack. Bolerjack and Criswell are spelled so many ways. I am totally new to research but I won't guess at the information. Thank you so much for answering my email.
Sandy Duncan
I can be contacted at sndrdncn2007@yahoo.com

Hi Richard,
I only know about Elizabeth from other researchers. I know there are several but my g g grandfather was Daniel Andrew (Croswell) Criswell and he lived in Spencer County Indiana when he died at 102 years of age. I have a picture I am guessing is Elizabeth Bolejack because she looks like she could be part Indian and the age of the buildings in the photo. The back says gramma criswell. I am trying to get some proof of there dates and the children they had for my family tree. I never knew of this family. If you have anything that could help me over the many roadblocks I would appreciate it. I have only started looking into my mothers family since 2006. Thank you,
Sandy

I am trying to find some information on William Criswell (or Cresswell) who married Mary E (maybe johnson) around 1886. They lived in Gwinnett Co. Georgia. He is the stepfather of my ancester Jesse D. Stapp, but I have not been able to find out any of the circumstances of the marriage. What I am trying to pin down is the marriage date and "Mary E"'s name, in an effort to find out Jesse D. Stapp's father.

Does any of this story sound familiar to you, or maybe you can direct me to another family member who might know something about this?

I am at a wall until I can figure this one out :)
Many thanks for your help!!

Shelly Stapp

I don't know where my mother-in-law got Alexander as the maiden name of Bennie and Nannie's mother but Manerva N. Journagan having been married to O'Neal fits. My only problem is with S.W. Criswell's date of birth listed as 1870. Maybe the "tidbits" you sent will help with that! -- Berta

Yes I would like to compare notes. Most of my mom's immidiate family lived in Indiana around Washington County, Spencer County that I am aware of. I found some in Missouri. I haven't worked on it for awhile so my memory isn't real clear on the names and dates at this time without looking. It is said my gr gr grandmother was born in Ohio (1796) but I can't find anything about her. Not only is the Criswell name spelled many ways but her name is also. She was Elizabeth Bolijack, Beulejack, Bolijak etc. She is supposed to have married my gr gr grandfather Daniel Andrew Croswell in 1817 (Kentucky). He changed his name to Criswell in 1813. She was Indian. My grandfather was Whitelaw Reid Criswell (1891). He went by Reed or Reid. My grandmother was Fern Edith Elliott (1893). They were born in Washington County IN and married there in 1912. My mother is Delia Ethel Marie Criswell born 12-19-1912. My gr grandfather was Marcus Lafayette Criswell, and his second wife Sarah Jane Humphrey was my gr grandmother. You can contact me at sduncan1959@yahoo.com. I have some pictures if you think we might have a connection.
Thank you for answering me!
Sandy

You are welcome to email me.
I suspect a Cresswell i have in Ohio might have come from Indiana or vice versa.
Thanks,
Anna Cook

Thank you so very much! Your first reply fits. I really appreciate how quickly you found the answer, thinking about how long I was looking. You gave me some information I didn't know about, too. I had no idea that S.W. Criswell was married a second time. The marriage to "Nervy" O'Neal must be so, as I have a picture given to me by my mother-in-law of Robert and Ellen O'Neal-- a relative of "Aunt" Nannie and (father-in-law) Bennie Criswell. I am going to check further on the second information but thank you again! Berta

I am having a hard search now about this ancestor! I found his daughter Nannie in the 1900 census as a boarder at 10 years old. Her mother's name is listed as Journaga. I have never found that name before. I have about exhausted my brain trying to think where else to look for her. Can someone help me --a suggestion perhaps? (p.s.)I have always thought S.W.'s wife was Manerva. My mother-in-law told me that.

In 1900, Bennie was 8yr., Samuel was about 36yr., widowed and they were boarding with a family-- last name Doty. S.W.'s daughter, Nannie was boarding with another family. I would like to learn about their life between these times. Can anyone help? -Berta

Hi,
I saw your message about being related to McKinley. I am the granddaughter of Reid Criswell. My mother (Delia Ethel Marie Criswell 12-19-1912) and uncle (Owen Maynard Criswell 8-16-1915) were born in the marriage of Whitelaw Reid Criswell and Fern Edith Elliott 1912. I didn't know his name was Whitelaw until I received mom's birth certificate. They were divorced in 1918. I have done some research on McKinley. Mom died when I was 11 and her other family was not known to me. My brothers remember bits and pieces. I have a couple of pictures when Reid, grandma Criswell (Sarah Humphrey) and one I think to be Elizabeth Bolerjack wife of Daniel Andrew Criswell, War of 1812. Any information or pictures you might have would be greatly appreciated. It has been very interesting and irritating to find mom's family.
Thank you,
Sandy

I am the GG Grandaughter of David Crockett Criswell who was born 5 Oct 1857 in Georgia near Stone Moutain. He married Mary Frances (Fanny) Odom (or Odum) in Georgia. He claims to have been raised by his mothers brothers and did not know who his father was. The family has very little information on his early history. An 1880 census shows them in Gates, Gwinnett, Georgia with Fanny's mother Mary A. Odum and Serina M.Odum (possibly a sister to Fanny). My great aunt Minerva is 7 months old on that census. Fanny had a brother named Ben.

Daniel Criswell, was b. circa 1787 and Elizabeth Bolyak/Bolejack, was b. circa 1796.

Jacob Criswell who married (1) Nancy Guy and (2) Anna SHADER was b. circa 1852. This translates to Daniel and Elizabeth being new parents at the ages of 65 and 56 respectively. Egads! lol

However, Daniel and Elizabeth did have a son, whom they named: Daniel A. Criswell, b. circa 1836. Coincidentally, he too, married an Elizabeth. (Enter the confusion!)

Jacob, b. 1852 and the other siblings mentioned in Audrey's post (with the exception of Jessie) are more likely to be the children of Daniel (b. 1836) and Elizabeth than Daniel (b. 1787) and Elizabeth Bolyak.

I know the previous post is nearly 10 years old now, but I just wanted to point out the potential errors.

Heppy hunting!

Shirley (Brickey) Nelson

Hi,
I am the granddaughter of Whitelaw Reid Criswell. My mother and uncle were born with his marriage to Fern Edith Elliott. I am trying to find someone that might be able to identify a picture my mom had that said gramma Criswell. One has been identified as Sarah Jane Humphrey Criswell my great grandmother and I am guessing the other might be Elizabeth Bolejack. I hope you can help me!
Sandy
