Hi Jennifer, I just found your msg and I know it is many years after the first posting, however I believe we may have relatives in common. My grandmother was Ruby Lucille Stone Crittendon. My grandfather was Ed Crittendon. My grandmother always talked very warmly of working for Mr. Milton and Ms. Nell, and that is how she met my grandfather. My grandmother was only 13 when they married and she gave birth to my father, Robert Edward Crittendon, when she was 14. They had a second son named Eddie Jo Crittendon. Unfortunately, all four are now gone. I also remember Uncle Joe. We went to visit him when we were young. He was married to Aunt Addie (sp?). I also remember hearing about Uncle Buck and some great stories about Abe. I remember meeting cousin Ralph when I was young, and my dad used to tell us stories about his and Ralph's adventures as youths. I would be happy to hear back from you!

Mr. and Mrs. John Crittendon had to have second marriage in Indian Territory to save rights of children.

Appears in "The Wapanucka Press" 16 June 1904, Wapanucka, Johnston County, Indian Territory, now Oklahoma

KANSAS MARRIAGE NO GOOD

Cherokees Have to Wed Again to Save Rights of Their Children

Bartlesville: A wedding ceremony which, it is belived, is without precedent in the Indian Territory, took place at the Baptist parsonage here. Mr. and Mrs. John Crittendon, both Cherokee citizens, were married by the Rev. Mr. Brendel for the second time within two years, although there never had been a seperation. While the ceremony was perfomed, the mother held in her arms her one-year-old infant.

Mr. and Mrs. Crittendon's first marriage was in Kansas, under the laws of that state. It was supposed that a Kansas marriage was good and valid to all infants and purposes until they applied a short time ago to the Dawes commission to have thier child enrolled as a Cherokee citizen, when they were informed that a marriage under the territorial laws would be considered a legitimate citizen. Rather than permit the infant to lose its allotment of land and also its pro rata of the tribal funds and appropriations, the father and mother decided to remarry, under a license issued in the Cherokee Nation.

Jennifer, I happened upon your post and thought I might contact you, if you don't mind.
I have traced my mothers line back to a Charles Pyrant (Pyron), 1850 census in Pittsylvania, (not Penn), Co. Va.
His daughter Mary Jane was born in 1840 and married William Crittendon pryor to 1860. He was born approx. 1836 and both were probably born in Pittsylvania Co. VA. Mary Jane would be my GGGreat Grandmother.
If you have any info. on this line of Crittendon's, would you share? There is conflicting records about who Mary Jane's husband was. There is another record that shows Mary's husband as Thomas Crittendon. In the 1880 census Mary Jane was back in her fathers house, now in Henry Co. VA. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Christopher Barnes
P.S. I have an 1850 census record from Pittsylvania Co. VA with a Devar*n Crittendon, age 45. Who he was I don't know, possibably William's father. William was 17 and in the same house.

I have a William and Mary Cittendon in the 1850 census for Pittsylvania Co. VA. He was 17 and she 15 yrs. Her maiden name was Pyrant from Charles and Nannie, or Nancy. The Pyrants, Pyron family were nextdoor neighbors of the Crittendons.
In the 1860 census William and Mary J. Crittendon have one (1) child, John, 1 yr. In the 1870 census William is absent and Mary goes by Jane w/ John, 11 and two other children, Nannie or Nancy,9 yrs and Alice, 7 yrs, My GGGreat Grandmother. I am trying to find any further info about the
Crittendon line and the Pyrant, Pyron line. I hope this info. helps someone. William does not show up again, probably dead.
Christopher Barnes

Do you know where in Tennessee your Crittendon
line was from and where they went form there?

My G Grandmother, Ludia Crittendon Baird
was daughter of Lewis Crittendon and Mary
(Nancy) Elizabeth Turner with siblings,
Joe and Leva.

Lewis's parents were Henry Crittendon and
Liza Tyler.

Ludia was born @1865, based on her age and
death year, so the timeframe is about right
to match the ones you are looking for, but I
am having a terrible time finding Crittendon
information. It appears that there may have
been an alteration of the name from Crittenden.

I did find Henry Crittendon and Eliza C. Tyler
1/17/1839 marriage in the Elbert County 1836-50
marriage listing, along with John S. Evalina
Driver, 12/27/1835; Robert M. Jane E. Burton,
11/02/1843; Thomas J. Sarah Ann Rice 12/05/
1850; William M. Julia Ann Chapman 2/22/1842.
I haven't yet gone back and picked out the
Crittendon brides off the list. There are also
Crittendons on the USGenweb census lists and a
few in the Civil War records.

Please let me know if any of these names match
any of your information. e-mail: jmmfn1@GTE.NET.

Greetings:
A year late and a $ short! Just came across
your inquiry about Mary Crittendon who
married Ephraim Lindley in Brunswick, Ohio.
Her father was William Sumner Crittendon - born
in Otis, MA, and her mother, Mary Brayman -
born in Tyringham, MA.
My great grandfather was Theodore Crittendon,
Mary's Brother. I have a letter from Mary's
husband, Ephraim, to Mary's sister, Sarah Crittendon
Also a photo of Mary Brayman.
If I get your e-dress, I'll send them off to you.
My list of brothers and sisters on the back of the
Mary B. photo reads:
John
Matthew
Elizabeth
Daniel
Lucy
Mary (Lindley)
Sarah
Theodore m. Ruth Miriam Soule of Becket, MA
Alanson
William
Brayman
I know that Alanson and Matthew stayed in the
Tyringham area. Theodore and Sarah in Otis.
I think Elizabeth married a Hawley and stayed in
the Otis/Sandisfield area.
One respondent to my inquiry about Mary/Ephraim
said that they were cousins. I've never followed
up on that to know how and through whom.

Marlyn

I have been doing genealogical research on my ancestors and learned that my great-great grandfather was named William S. Crittendon. He was born in Phelps, Ontario County, N.Y. on July ll,1811. He died in Norvell, Jackson County, MI (I currently reside in Jackson, MI). According to his death certificate, his parents' names were Sally S. Crittendon and O. Crittendon and they resided somewhere in Massachusetts at that time. Athough I don't know the names of any of his siblings, it sounds like we may be talking about the same person. I do have more info on his children, grandchildren, etc., if you need it.
