Descendants of Anthony Crocker; IOW

For those on the list who claim descent from Anthony Crocker (d.1693) in Isle of Wight Co., Virginia, perhaps it is time to stir the pot a bit. It has been much too quiet.

If you have kept up to date with the Crocker Family emanating from Isle of Wight Co., Virginia you should be aware that the known patriarch of the family was one Anthony Crocker (d.1693). This Anthony, and what was undoubtedly his second wife Mary, had a son named William Crocker, among others. William Crocker married Katherine (maiden name unknown), perhaps about 1695, and they died in 1737 and 1750 respectively in Isle of Wight Co., Virginia. It is this William and Katherine Crocker who are of interest in this posting.

As many of you are aware, there are two lines of Crocker’s that claim descent from William Crocker (d.1737) and his wife Katherine (d.1750) through their son Anthony Crocker. One group claims that Anthony Crocker, son of William and Katherine, is the same Anthony Crocker who died 1754 in Granville Co., North Carolina, while another group claims that he is the Anthony Crocker who died 1796 in Isle of Wight Co., Virginia. As far as I am concerned, neither Anthony Crocker mentioned above was the son of William and Katherine Crocker. I would offer the following reasoning and proofs for my conclusions. It will be long, but I hope that I can present this clearly enough so that it is not too difficult to follow.

Excerpts from the will of William Crocker, dated 24 Dec 1735, proved 23 May 1737 [Isle of Wight Co., VA Will Book 5, p. 160]
Item 1 - to Anthony Crocker, my son, one hundred acres of land, more or less, being part of the tract of land wheron I now live being parted by a deep branch on the south side of my manor plantation, all on the south side of the said branch.
Item 2 - to my son, Peter Crocker, the remaining part of my land, being the plantation wheron I now dwell, one hundred acres, more or less.
Item 3 - to my son, Arthur Crocker all my wearing clothes, one pewter basin, and one chair.
Item 4 - to my son, William Crocker, one long table, one pewter basin and one chair.
Item 5 - to my son, Anthony Crocker, one chest, one pewter basin and one chair.
Item 6 - to my daughter, Eliza, one chest, one looking glass and one basin.
Item 7 - to my son, Peter, one pair of pistols, and holsters, one pewter basin and one chair. All the rest of my personal estate goods and chattels whatsoever, to my loving wife, Katherine Crocker, my full and sole Executor of this my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and year above written.
Willm (his “WC” hand & seal) Crocker {seal}

During this time period it was the generally accepted practice to list children in a will in the order of their birth from oldest to youngest. It is not known for sure if it was done in this instance, however, the implication is that Anthony Crocker was the eldest child of William and Katherine Crocker.

Incidentally, this William Crocker did not have the middle initial “C” as many have listed him. William Crocker was illiterate and always signed documents with his mark “WC.” Someone has obviously confused his mark with a middle initial.

William Crocker’s wife, Katherine, died intestate in 1750 in Isle of Wight Co., Virginia. Her estate was administered by what was undoubtedly her son Anthony Crocker. In the absence of a will an estate was generally administered by the surviving spouse and/or the heir-at-law (closest living blood relative), which was normally the eldest son. Please note that the Anthony Crocker who administered the estate of Katherine Crocker was literate and always signed his name in full.

Anthony Crocker petitioned for the administration of Katherine Crocker. Appraisers: Jordan Thomas, Peter Woodward, Thomas Cofer and Francis Ward or any three of them. Court of 7 Feb 1750. [Isle of Wight Co., VA Order Book 1746-1752, p. 288]

Estate of Katherine Crocker appraised by Peter Woodward, Thomas Copher, Francis Ward. Signed Anthony Crocker (administrator). Ordered 7 Feb 1750, returned 7 Mar 1750. [Isle of Wight Co., VA Will Book 5, p. 308]

Estate of Katherine Crocker account examined by Jordan Thomas. Signed Anthony Crocker (administrator). Recorded 1 Mar 1753. [Isle of Wight Co., VA, Will Book 6, p. 43]

**********
Now we turn to the Anthony Crocker who died 1754 in Granville Co., North Carolina. He is first found in the Colonial records as receiving a land grant for 50 acres in Brunswick Co., Virginia on 7 Jul 1726. [Virginia Land Patent Book 12, p. 527]. As a grantee was required to be 21 years of age in order to receive a land grant, Anthony’s birth would have had to have occurred no later than 1705, but probably earlier. As there was a waiting period between application and issuance of the grant it is usually assumed that the grantee was living on the land for a few years before the grant was actually issued.

The next record found for him is as a witness to a lease and release in Brunswick Co., Virginia from Richard Smith to David Cummins dated 1 Jul 1738. Anthony Crocker signed this indenture with his mark which looks like a capital letter “A” lying on its left side. The fact that he signed by his mark would indicate that he was illiterate. [Brunswick Co., VA Deeds & Wills, Vol. 1, p. 435]

1742 Land Record: Augustine (his “A” mark) Honeycutt of Brunswick Co. to John Cocker of same. For 5 shillings a one-year lease for 50 acres which had been a patent to Anthony Crocker dated 7 Jul 1726, on the south side of Fountains Creek, joining Turner. Dated 3 Feb 1742, recorded 3 Feb 1742. Wit: Philips Roberts, John Dugger, William Cocker. Ster Clack CC. [Brunswick Co., VA Deed Book 2, p. 70-71] Note: This would indicate that as of 1742 Anthony Crocker had sold his land in Brunswick Co., Virginia to Augustine Honeycutt although a deed of sale has not been found. It is probable that Anthony Crocker was already living in North Carolina by this time. The lease also mentions John Cocker and William Cocker and they have had their surnames transcribed as Crocker by some sources. The original document clearly records their surname as Cocker, however. John and William Cocker were brothers, and their surname was indeed Cocker and not Crocker. They were the sons of John W. Coker and Priscilla Geddings. William Cocker lived just across the state line in Northampton Co., NC at the time. There is no known relationship between these brothers and Anthony Crocker.

1745 Land Record: 11 Apr 1745; Anthony Crocker, petition for land patent of 100 acres in Edgecombe County, (North Carolina) granted by the Executive Council. (Note: Granville Co. formed from part of Edgecombe Co., in 1746) Later records indicate that the actual grant was dated 20 Apr 1745.

1747 Tax Record - Granville Co., North Carolina. Anthony Crocker. Taken by Edward Jones. [Granville Co., NC Taxables before 1763]

1750 Tax Record – Granville Co., North Carolina. Anthony Croker and sons Arther and Jacob. Taken by Jno. Brantley. [Granville Co., NC Taxables before 1763]

1751 Tax Record – Granville Co., North Carolina. Anthony Crocker 3 tithables, himself & son Arter & son Jacob. Taken by David Phillips, Constable. [Granville Co., NC Taxables before 1763]

1752 Tax Record – Granville Co., North Carolina. Anthony Croker and son Jacob. Taken by unknown. [Granville Co., NC Taxables before 1763]

Excerpts from the Last Will and Testament of Anthony Crocker. Dated 28 Jul 1754 Granville Co., North Carolina, proved 3 Sep 1754 Granville Co., North Carolina. [Granville Co., NC, Loose Wills]
Item – to my son Thomas Croker the Plantation whereon I now Live with all the lands I one (own) on the North Side of Sandy Creek with fifty acres at the Loer (lower) end on the other side of the said creek.
Item – to my son Thomas Croker won (one) bed and furniture and the Half of the Residue of my other household goods also fore Cows & Calves & six sows to be paid him when he arives to the age of twenty won years.
Item – to my son Arter Croker the Plantation whereon he now Lives with all my lands on the South Side of Sandy Creek Except the fifty acres aforementioned.
Item – to my son Jacob Croker ten Pounds Currant money of Virgene (Virginia) to be Raised by the Estate.
Item – to my wife five shillings starling money of great brittan.
Item – to all the Rest of my Children the sum of won shilling starling money of great brittan so each of the said Children to be paid them when they can Lawfully Demand it.
Item – to my two sons Arther Croker and Jacob Croker all the Residue of my estate of what kind soever the won half to the won & the other half to the other.
Item – son Jacob Crocker have the use of the Plantation whear on I now live till my son Thomas shall arrive to the age of twenty won years.
And I do hearby constitute and appoint my son Arter Croker & Jacob Croker Executers of this my Last Will and Testament.
As witness my hand and seal this 28th Day of July one thousand seven hundred and fifty fore.

Signed Sealed & Acknowledged	Anthony [his “<” hand] Croker

Anthony’s mark is not produced accurately above. It actually looks like a capital letter “A” lying on its left side. This is exactly the same mark as used by the Anthony Crocker in Brunswick Co., Virginia. Given the scarcity of population, the fact that there were very few individuals living on the frontier surnamed Crocker, let alone named Anthony Crocker, and the distinctiveness of his mark, it is more than reasonable to conclude that the Anthony Crocker who received a 1726 land grant in Brunswick Co., Virginia and the Anthony Crocker who died 1754 in Granville Co., North Carolina are one and the same man. Note: this is also an instance whereby the eldest son is not the first mentioned child in a will.

Incidentally, many people list the wife of this Anthony Crocker (d.1754) as Dorcas (maiden name unknown). I cannot find any records, including his will, that list the name of Anthony’s wife, nor any sources or authority for her name being Dorcas. Until such time as someone can provide reasonable proof, I consider the name of this Anthony Crocker’s wife as being unknown.

**********
Now let us turn to the Anthony Crocker who died 1796 in Isle of Wight Co., Virginia. Although a firm date is not available it is generally conceded that he was born about 1732. While not verifiable, this birth date coincides reasonably well with the known births of his children. The name of this Anthony’s wife is not known, nor are any particulars about her. It is also to be noted that this Anthony Crocker was illiterate and signed his name by mark. The records are fairly sparse, but I present the following:

1779 Land Record: Anthony Crocker of Newport Parish to Thomas Addison for love and affection 100 acres in Newport Parish. Dated Jan 1779. Wit: Francis Young, William (his “X” mark) Harris, Mary (her “X” mark) Crocker, Rebecca (her “X” mark) Crocker. Signed Anthony (his “X” mark) Crocker. Dated 7 Jan 1779. [Isle of Wight Co., VA Deed Book 1750-1782, p. ?]

1779 Mentioned: Sarah Parnell to Joseph Parnell 83 acres adjacent William Harris & Anthony Crocker. Dated 2 March 1779. [Isle of Wight Co., VA Deed Book 1750-1782, p. 64]

1782 Virginia Census – Twp. 06 00, Isle of Wight Co., Virginia. Anthony Crocker.

1787 Virginia Census - Isle of Wight Co., Virginia, Personal Property Tax Lists. Anthony Crocker with 50 acres of land.

1790 Virginia Census - Isle of Wight Co., Virginia. Anthony Crocker with 6 whites in household.

1793 Consent – Drury Crocker and Lucy Barlow; surety, Benjamin Hicks; consent of (signature) Anthony Crocker and (signature) George Barlow; 12 Feb 1793. [Isle of Wight County Marriage Bonds, 1628 – 1800] Note: In this instance Anthony Crocker’s signature appears on the consent, however, the signature of Drewry Crocker also appears on the bond and he is known to be illiterate. It would appear that the court clerk neglected to indicate their respective marks when he transcribed the documents.

1795-1796 Testator: Will of Anthony Crocker. Leg: Rebecca Parnell; Dolly Addison; Anthony Addison; Molly Pitman; Aron Pitman; John Pitman; Nancy Edwards; Bethiah Lawler; Drue Crocker; Joseph Crocker; Hugh Montgomery; Thomas Addison. Ex., Thomas Addison. Dated 29 Nov 1795, proved 5 Sep 1796. Wit: Jacob (his “X” mark) Stringfield, James Pitman, Sampson (his “X” mark) Harrison. Security: William Addison. [Isle of Wight Co., VA Will Book 11, p. 8] Note: For whatever reason the signature of the testator on this will is incomplete. It reads An X {seal}. It certainly appears that the testator signed the original document with his mark.

1797 Testator: Estate of Anthony Crocker. Appraised by William Gay, Jacob Stringfield, James Pitman, Joseph Stringfield. Returned 5 Jun 1797. [Isle of Wight Co., VA Will Book 11, p. 42]

**********
Lastly we turn to the Anthony Crocker whom I consider to be the true son of William and Katherine Crocker. It would appear that he was born about 1698 and last appears in the records of Isle of Wight Co., Virginia in 1773. After that he disappears and no will or administration of estate has been found. His wife was named Mary (maiden name unknown). I personally think that his wife may have been Mary Womble which has been confused with, and given rise to the fictitious belief that the original Anthony Crocker (d.1693) was married to a Mary Wombwell. But that’s a whole other story and is beyond the scope of this missive.

1735-1737 Legatee: Mentioned in the will of his father, William Crocker. "To son Anthony Crocker 100 acres & personal items." Dated 4 Dec 1735, proved 23 May 1737. [Isle of Wight Co., VA Will Book 5, p. 160]

1737 Land Record: Anthony Hays to Anthony Crocker, 100 acres on the west side of the second swamp of Blackwater in Isle of Wight. Dated 20 Aug 1737. [actual deed not found, but reference to it is found in Isle of Wight Co., VA Deed Book 1747-52, p. 215]

1747 Land Record: Peter Crocker of Edgcombe Co. in North Carolina to Anthony Crocker of Isle of Wight, 100 acres on NE side of Blackwater (now in occupancy of said Anthony Crocker and is part of 700 acres granted to William Richardson on 29 Sept 1664). Dated 14 Jan. 1747. Wit: Samuel Cornwell and Joseph (his “X” mark) Thompson. [Isle of Wight Co., VA Deed Book 1747-52, pg. 45] (Note: This is undoubtedly the 100 acres Peter inherited from his father, William Crocker.)

1747 Land Record: Peter Crocker acknowledged deed to Anthony Crocker. Court 14 Jan 1747. [Isle of Wight Co., VA Order Book 1746-1752, p. 74]

1748 Land Record: Anthony Crocker to William Parnell, 100 acres on the west side of the second swamp of Blackwater (being land said Crocker bought from Anthony Hays on 20 August 1737) adjoining his other land, the Deep Branch and William Rand. Dated 9 Mar 1748. [Isle of Wight Co., VA Deed Book 1747-52, p. 215]

1748 Mentioned: Deed of gift from Arthur Haise (Hays) to Sampson Flake, 50 acres on the west side of the second swamp of Blackwater, adjoining Patience Jordan, Anthony Crocker, Robert Haise (Hays), Christopher Atkinson, and said Haise, plus 1 cow and calf, 1 barren cow, 3 sheep, and 3 hoggs. Dated 13 April 1748. Witnesses: Samuel Cornwell, Joseph (his “X” mark) Thomas, and James (his “X” mark) Pitman. [Isle of Wight Co., VA Deed Book 1747-52, p. 234]

1750 Court Record: Anthony Crocker petitioned for the administration of Katherine Crocker. Appraisers: Jordan Thomas, Peter Woodward, Thomas Cofer and Francis Ward or any three of them. Court of 7 Feb 1750. [Isle of Wight Co., VA Order Book 1746-1752, p. 288]

1750 Administrator: Estate of Katherine Crocker: Appraised by Peter Woodward, Thomas Copher, Francis Ward. Signed Anthony Crocker. Ordered 7 Feb 1750, returned 7 Mar 1750. [Isle of Wight Co., VA Order Book 1746-1752, p. 303]

1751 Appraiser: Estate of Reuben Cook. Appraised by Peter Woodward, Thomas Coffer, Anthony Crocker. Returned 7 Nov 1751. [Isle of Wight Co., VA Will Book 5, p. 377]

1753 Administrator: Estate of Katherine Crocker. Account estate. Examined by Jordan Thomas. Signed Anthony Crocker. Recorded 1 Mar 1753. [Isle of Wight Co., VA, Will Book 6, p. 43]

1757 Appraiser: Estate of Edward Haile. [Isle of Wight Co., VA, Will Book 5, p. 253]

1757 Witness: Deed of gift of land adjacent to Anthony Crocker, Charles Harris, Samuel Flake & Blackwater Swamp. Dated 5 July 1757. Wit: Anthony Crocker and Benjamin (X) Atkins. [Isle of Wight Co., VA, Deed Book 1750-1782, p. 492]

1758 Appraiser: Estate of Thomas Parnell. Appraised by Adam Brown, William Jordan, Anthony Crocker. Ordered 10 Jan 1758, returned 7 Dec 1758. [Isle of Wight Co., VA Will Book 5, p. 448]

1758 Appraiser: Estate of Edward Hail. Appraised by William Jordan, Andrew Sikes, Anthony Crocker. Returned 3 Aug 1758. [Isle of Wight Co., VA Will Book 5, p. 412]

1764 Land Record: Anthony Crocker to William Jordan, land in Isle of Wight Co. Deed recorded 3 May 1764. Wit: Dolphin Drew, Philip Moody Jr., Joseph Maderra, Francis Ward. [Isle of Wight Co., VA Deed Book 1750-1782, p 229]

1768 Witness: Will of William Coffer. Leg: son Jesse; wife Mary; son William; daughter Elizabeth; daughter Lucy; daughter Rebecca; daughter Patty. Witness: Benjamin Gwaltney, William Jordan, Anthony Crocker, Thomas Betts, William Gay. Will dated 23 Oct 1768. Proved 2 Mar 1769. [Isle of Wight Co., VA, Will Book 7, p. 529]

1773 Land Record: Anthony and Mary (her “X” mark) Crocker to William Jordan, 100 acres in Isle of Wight Co. on 2nd swamp of Blackwater. Signed Anthony Crocker. Dated 2 Dec 1773. [Isle of Wight Co., VA Deed Book 13, p. 149]

The 1773 land record above is apparently the land that Anthony bought from his brother Peter in 1747. It is also the last known record for this Anthony Crocker.

**********
From the above I think that the following conclusions can be drawn about the Anthony Crocker who died 1754 in Granville Co., North Carolina.

Although not a major argument it is to be noted that when Katherine Crocker died in IOW in 1750, Anthony Crocker (d.1754) was living some 125 miles away in Granville Co., NC in an area only recently opened for settlement. Roads were almost nonexistent, travel was difficult and was accomplished on what were little more than paths. As a minimum it would have been a three day hard ride from Granville Co. to IOW and I seriously doubt that the Anthony Crocker of Granville Co. would have been riding back and forth, 125 miles each way, to administer an estate that someone else could administer locally.

The Anthony Crocker who administered the estate of Katherine Crocker (d.1750 in IOW) was literate and always signed his name in full, while the Anthony Crocker (d.1754 Granville) was illiterate and signed his name by mark.

Most legal documents of the time were witnessed by relatives, close friends, or neighbors. If you compare the various names appearing on such documents you can generally distinguish one individual Crocker and/or Crocker family from another. It is to be noted that the name of the Anthony Crocker, whom I consider to be the real son of William & Katherine Crocker, was appearing on legal documents in IOW while the Anthony Crocker (d.1754) was living in Granville Co., NC, and his name was also appearing on legal documents in IOW long after the Anthony Crocker of Granville Co., NC was dead.

Perhaps most important, however, is the 14 Jan 1747 land record whereby Peter Crocker of Edgecombe Co. in North Carolina sells to Anthony Crocker of Isle of Wight, 100 acres on NE side of the Blackwater (River) and now in occupancy of said Anthony Crocker [Isle of Wight Co., VA Deed Book 1747-52, pg. 45]. This is undoubtedly the 100 acres Peter inherited from his father, William Crocker (who lived on or near the Blackwater River) and Peter, having moved to North Carolina, is selling it to his brother Anthony Crocker who was at the time in occupancy of the land. In this same year, 1747, the Anthony Crocker (d.1754) appears on the tax list for Granville Co., NC.

Given the records, I can come to no other conclusion than the Anthony Crocker who administered the estate of Katherine Crocker, and the Anthony Crocker of Granville Co., NC were two separate and distinct individuals.

**********
I would propose that the following conclusions can be drawn about the Anthony Crocker who died 1796 in Isle of Wight Co., Virginia:

To have been a son of William & Katherine Crocker, Anthony Crocker would have reasonably had to have been born sometime between the years 1695-1710. The Anthony Crocker who died 1796 in IOW is generally conceded to have been born about 1732. To have been born within the 1695-1710 time range would mean that he fathered his children in perhaps his 60s or 70s, and would have died when approaching 100 years of age. While not impossible, this is highly unlikely. The dates just don’t work.

The Anthony Crocker who administered the estate of Katherine Crocker (d.1750 in IOW) was literate and always signed his name in full, while the Anthony Crocker (d.1796 Isle of Wight) was illiterate and signed his name by mark.

The Anthony Crocker, presumed to be the real son of William & Katherine Crocker, bought his first property in 1737 in IOW. If the Anthony Crocker (d.1796) was indeed born about 1732, which is logical, then he was only about 5 years-old at the time and it is doubtful that he was buying property.

In the absence of a surviving spouse, and unless he declines, it is generally the eldest son who administers the estate of a deceased parent. As such, the Anthony Crocker b. abt. 1732 was certainly not the eldest son, nor even close to being the eldest son of William & Katherine Crocker. He would only have been about 18 years of age when Katherine died in 1750.

Again, I can come to no other conclusion than the Anthony Crocker who administered the estate of Katherine Crocker, and the Anthony Crocker who died 1796 in Isle of Wight Co., VA were two separate and distinct individuals.

So what does all of this mean? I think that close analysis of the records shows that neither Anthony Crocker (d.1754 Granville), or Anthony Crocker (d.1796 IOW), were the sons of William & Katherine Crocker. It is my opinion that the Anthony Crocker who was the real son of William & Katherine Crocker was probably born abt. 1695 in IOW, was married to Mary (maiden name unknown), and is last found in the records of Isle of Wight Co., VA when he sold land in 1773.

The fact that no estate records have been found for this Anthony Crocker is disturbing, but not without precedent. There are literally dozens of legitimate reasons as to why his probate record has not been located, if indeed it even exists.

At the time he would have been perhaps 75 years-old and could have sold his land and moved to another state to be taken care of in his old age by one of his children. Or having sold his land he no longer had an estate worth administration. It is also my understanding that if the heirs all agreed to the division of the estate probate might not be necessary. Or his will simply never got recorded.

It certainly appears that a lot more work needs to be done on this Crocker family. I anyone has further information I would encourage you to post it.

Obit: Dr. Mary I. Reed Crocker, 1915 - 2012

Dr. Mary I. Reed Crocker
World Traveler Extraordinaire Dr. Mary I. Reed Crocker, went to her final destination Tuesday, March 20, 2012.
Born May 20, 1915 in Lima, Ohio,
to the late Joseph and Rhea Radabough Reed,
Mary enjoyed travel from a young age. Into her 80s, she traveled, often staying in Elderhostels. Her motto could have been "Have suitcase, will travel." Mary married James Peter Crocker on June 9, 1934, living and teaching school in Michigan. The family moved to Eastlake, Ohio where the young mother of four was hired as a teacher. Mary began taking credits towards her BS degree in Education from Kent State University. She graduated with honors. Promoted to supervisor of the in-home teaching program for special needs students, she earned a Master's degree in Education and Psychology, also from Kent State. Mary earned her EdD from the University of Pittsburgh in 1971. While serving the Willoughby-Eastlake School District, Mary enjoyed a sabbatical consulting for the American Foundation for Overseas Blind in 1963-64. She established the first national educational program for blind children in the Philippines, receiving the Educational Pace-Setter Award from President Richard Nixon's National Advisory Council for that work. She accepted an honorary PhD in Humanities from the University of the Philippines in 1964. She was the Director of Education and a professor at numerous colleges and universities, retiring from Florida International University. Mary was guest lecturer and cultural exchange professor in India, Malaysia and China. Mary was honored with many awards throughout her life including a few of her favorites, the First Compendium of Persons of Eminence in Special Education; Who's Who Among American Women; the International Who's Who; and Persons of Eminence of the South. Again retiring, James and Mary moved to Summit Township, where Mary was named President of the board of the International Institute of Erie and Community Coordinator for the AARP Council of Erie. Mary had many outside interests. Throughout the years she excelled at gardening and had magnificent roses. She was a talented seamstress, took pleasure in embroidery, crocheting and cards. She shared those interests with her granddaughters, teaching skills and instilling the creativity of these pastimes. She had a passion for round and square dance and in her words appreciated "just having fun". James Crocker died April 7, 1982. Mary later moved to Waterford to live with her youngest son Mike and his wife, Margaret. She remained there until suffering a severe stroke June 12, 2002. She moved to Forestview SNF and was a member of the Resident's Council while participating in many activities. Survivors include her children: Bud Crocker; LaQuita McCarthy, California; Gaynol Wapotich, Colorado; Michael D. Crocker and his wife, Margaret Ann, Waterford, Pa.; a sister, Ruth Reed Linton Arban, Montgomery, Texas; grandchildren Michelle Sax and husband, James and Marie Crocker-Blum DDS and husband, Dale, Waterford; Jacquelynn Deleon, Lyne McCarthy, Patrick McCarthy and wife Christi, and Jamie Wapotich, California; Tim Crocker, Mike Crocker, Florida; and Lorene Wapotich, Colorado; also 11 great-grandchildren. This dedicated, driven educator accomplished more, live more and dreamed more than many females born in 1915. She was an inspiration to her family, especially her grandchildren whom she taught to value education, career and family. At Mary's request, there will be no funeral services. Donations may be made to Stancliff Hose Company, PO Box 275, Waterford, PA 16441.
( Erie Times-News on March 25, 2012 )

Re: Crocker, New London CT

WILLIAM 3 CROCKER (William 2,Thomas 1)

William Crocker was born at New London Ct. 13 Aug 1707,
(NL 1-43) He died 18 Feb 1773 at New London, Ct, There
are two versions concerning his marriage.

The first - That he was married about 1728 to ANN MORGAN,
the sister of William Morgan, who married Elizabeth Crocker.
Ann (Anna) & William Morgan were children of Richard Rose Morgan.

The second - That he moved from New London to Truro, Ma.
and there was married on 4 Mar 1732/33 to EUNICE FREEMAN, the daughter of Constant Freeman & Jane Treat. "After sons, William and John were born in Truro, he returned with his family to New London, Ct., where the rest of his chil-
dren were born." (From a letter from Mr. Albert R. Crocker)

A comment in the Parkhurst Manuscript, for which he gives
credit, in part, to Joshua Hempstead's Diary reads as fol-
lows... "Richard Rose Morgan made his will 17 Dec 1730;
proved 2 Mar 1730/31. In it he left several large bequests to his daughter, Anna Morgan, on condition that she never marry to William Crocker, the son of William.	If she did many said bequests to become null and void. He left to his son, Abraham, all the rest of his estate, and made son, Abraham and
daughter Anna, Co-Executors." (Par 9-65)

Anna Morgan apparently never married William Crocker. She
had a daughter, Mary, of unknown origin, who died 17 Apr
1756, about 20 years of age. She had a son, Elihu, who
married 6 Nov 1749 to Margaret Dayton; and Hempstead's
Diary says that this Elihu Crocker was the son of Anna Morgan
by William Crocker. (Hempstead's Diary pp.667 & 639 ?)

Anna Morgan refused to act as an executrix of her father's
will. She finally married 23 Jan 1753 to James Tool, about
20 years prior to the death of William Crocker. (PAR 9-65)
(Hempstead Diary p.601)

I am enclined to go along with the second view of William
Crocker's marriage in Truro, Ma. for the following reasons.

1. There seems to be no proof of William Crocker's marriage,
in or around New London, to Anna Morgan.

2. There is no record in or near Truro, Ma. of the birth of
William Crocker, who married Eunice Freeman. A letter
from Mrs. Caroline Kardell, a professional researcher, in
answer to a letter of enquiry I sent to Mr. Gary Boyd
Roberts; writes as follows, "I enclose what I have found
regarding William Crocker. There is no mention of Croc-
kers in the History of Truro, no births or deaths in the
Vital Records for Crockers, and no Crockers in the book
of Cemetery Inscriptions. The marriage record of William
Crocker to Eunice Freeman is enclosed."

3. He may have had good reason for leaving New London, after
it became known that he had had a child by Anna Morgan;
not only to avoid disgrace, but also because he may have
wanted to marry Anna but was frustrated by the firm
opposition of her father.

4. Anna probably wanted to marry William: this may be the
main reason for her refusal to act as co-executor of her
father's Will; since this marriage would have resulted in
her virtual disinheritance.

5. Because William named one of his sons "Freeman', and
another one "Constant" in honor of their grandfather,
Constant Freeman.

6. It appears to be impossible to distinguish between the
William Crocker, who is known to have been born in New
London; and the William Crocker who came from Truro with
wife Eunice, and his two sons William and John. (PAR 9-3)

7. There is no record of Anna Morgan's marriage until she
eventually married James Tool 23 Jan 1753, about 20 yrs.
before William Crocker died.

Ref: (Freeman Gen, p.362)(Treat Gen. p.186 & p. 213)

Children attributed to William Crocker (Should be 9 in all)

i. ELIZABETH, b. 1750
m. 7 Nov 1768 to John Daniels

This information is from a book written by my grandfather Everett Adnah Crocker concerning the descendants of Thomas Crocker of New London, Ct. I hope you find it helpful. If there is anything else I can do for you please let me know.

I would be very interested in detailed information concerning your families descent fron Isaac Crocker.

I am currently scanning all the pages of my grandfathers book and converting them to Adobe Acrobat format. When complete I will offer it free of charge on the internet. After that, I am planning an expansion and rewrite of the book. Any new information that I could gather from descendants of Thomas Crocker, such as yourself, would be very helpful.

Sincerely,
Paul A.
Re: Crocker, New London CT

Dear David Hoffman. I have a Crocker problem: I am trying to
prove that William Crocker (born 1707 New London) (wife: Eunice Freeman) had a son William Crocker, born Jan 23, 1733 Truro, MA died in New London, Conn. He supposedly married a Lydia Moore, and had a son Lemuel Grant Crocker, born 29, Feb. 1784 New London, CT. (wife Lucinda Beckwith). The Barbour Collection (Connecticut Vital Records books) says William Crocker and Lydia More/Moore married in Feb. 1792, which would not fit with Lemuel's birth date of 1784. I believe that Barbour had misread the marriage date-but cannot locate any other record to solve this. Original birth, marriage and deaths of New London are not very legible. Would appreciate any help you could provide here. Thank you.
Olivia Patch, e-mail olivia42539@aol.com

Hi, I'm also researching a Crocker family for Launceston, Cornwall. I have a Ann Crocker b.1731 in Launceston and her brother Benjamin b.1729. Their father was Benjamin Crocker, and I suspect that their mother was also Anne. Ann married Richard Ruse in 1755.
Selina.

It is believed that my great-grandmother, Mary Ann Crocker, immigrated to the Chicago area from Ireland as a small girl. She was born in 1865. She took the name 'Crocker' when she got here, we don't know what it was in Ireland. Either her uncle, or a family friend, adopted her and she took the name of Crocker. Any information PLEASE!!!

I dont know if there is a connect, but this is a repeat of a post I made in Nov 99...
My GGrandmother name was Margaret J Crocker 1881-1966, her father was William David Crocker. William came to Canada with his older brother Matthew and Younger sister Mary(Polly)from Devonshire, England in the mid 1800s (I don't have dates). Their parents, who were farmers, had both died in Devonshire and the 3 children (Matthew ?, William 19, Polly 14) decided to try their chances in the new world. The ship they traveled on was wrecked off the coast of Nova Scotia. The three Crockers survived the wreck. Matthew headed for Arkansas, William and Polly went to London, Ontario and settled near there. William married Amelia Sheppard (McIntyre), and they had 12 children (wow). William "died a middle aged man" and Amelia moved with most of her kids to British Columbia. Margaret (my GGrandma) stayed in Ontario and married James Brandon, Their daughter Marion is my grandmother. If anyone has info on the Devonshire Crockers, the Arkansas Crockers or the British Columbia Crockers, please let me know. I have plenty of info on the descendants of Margaret Brandon (Crocker).

HI. I hope those who are discussing the PROUTY/Sitting Bull connection are still around.

My brother-in-law's family legend says very little, but this is what he could tell me: "Very little is actually known. From family legend, my paternal grandfather's mother or grandmother's name was Josephine Prouty. She supposedly lived in the Dallas area, where she passed away in the 1970s or 1980s. This would probably have been his mother.

"According to legend, she was the last full-blooded descendent of Sitting Bull, the Sioux leader.

"The problem is that I can't find any specific records of her. My paternal grandfather's name is Robert Lee Shepherd. He died June 9, 2006, in Redding, CA, Shasta County."

If anyone has heard the name Josephine PROUTY in their families & knows more, or if this info helps you, please feel free to let me know. My email starts off the same way as my user name here, but add (at)hotmail.com to the end. Thanks!

Hi

Melissa Daggett just received her master's degree with a thesis on Henry Louis Rey. Check with the University of New Orleans' history department or library and see if you can get a copy of it.

I am doing research on the Economie society, and Rey was a member. It's not really genealogy -- but if you'll keep in touch with me, I'll let you know if there's info we can exchange.

The line that I am trying to follow back is the crockers. The only information on the Rey line is what I picked up at Roots Web and is in this posting. If your g grandfather had a different mother I would not have picked it up. Good Luck
Barbara: I noticed that you refer to a "Henry Louis Rey" in your query. My great grandfather was, to the best info I have, the son of a Henry Louis Rey. If you have any info on Henry Louis Rey I would greatly appreciate your sharing it with me
Thanks
Charles E. Rey
