Based on Y-DNA testing results, several persons who seem to have a documented ancestry through David Crockett's grandfather David ("the Elder") belong to a haplogroup designated I2b1, somewhat rare. That is different from any of the other Crockett DNA donors. So, even thousands of years ago, their ancestors were not related. "Davy"
could easily have come from Scots who resettled in Ulster (Northern Ireland), but I am out of my depth when I get into population migrations.

I'd guess it is his Mother, Mary Jane Danley-Crockett. It closely matches information I have in my notes about her dying ~ 1918, in Hope, NM. Source for these notes is Betsy Reimer.

Did you get my email requesting I be added to your Crockett list?

Yes. Thomas Albert Crockett surprised us by turning out to be from a Maine family. Kathryn Jones suspected he was a brother of Andrew Jackson Crockett and possibly "Davy" Crockett's nephew.

Lou (Crockett) Bridges of Abilene, TX, is the aunt of DNA donor kit #78056. "My nephew had a DNA test and it shows we are from this Thomas Crockett. "My ggg grandfather was Thomas A. Crockett died 1860/70 in Smith Co. Texas. Was born in Ga around 1812. I have always looked at the David Crockett family. This is always a dead end. Now I am looking at this family. How did they get to Georgia and who came?"

I am a direct descendent of Melvina Silvers whose mother's maiden name was Crockett (I have it as Delilah) and somehow closely related to David (Davy) Crockett. I have an old original photo of Melvina Silvers with her 3rd husband, Mr. Bible. They are buried in the Bible family cemetery in Virginia. I am interested in the information you have. Melvina's first husband was Jacob Clare who was killed in the Civil War and one of their children, Mary Catherine Clare, was my great grandmother who died in Iowa. Melvina's second husband was Ingle and also died in the Civil War. Melvina was widowed 3 times. Please reply. Patricia Johnson Villa, Calif.

There was a flurry of exchanges in the late 1990s about several Crocketts who moved to Texas.

This is Don Maring, and I was present in these discussions as dmaring@bigfoot.com or dmaring@hotmail.com. Today, I use familydog@comcast.net for the genealogy side of my life. I am not related to the Crocketts.

Rebecca (Kilpatrick) Reimers (Mrs John C) submitted some queries in 1998 and 1999. She is descended from one Andrew Jackson Crockett who was married to Eliza Jane Danley in TX abt 1858. On November 16, 2010 in your posting you attempted to locate Becky Reimers. She did use the John C Reimer e-mail address which was confusing. The last posting I have seen was from the Crockett Mailing List "Roll Call". The e-mail was different from the one on older postings. jcrsmiles@worldnet.att.net. Apparently, that, too, is invalid.

Lou Crockett Bridges, descended from one Thomas Crockett of TX, was a contributor to the discussion, among others. DNA testing put her in a whole different line, surprising a few of us. Her nephew Herman Crockett was tested and found related to Thomas Crockett from Kittery Maine 1633.

Nita Parker Ryan, a granddaughter of Matilda Jane (Crockett) Parker (Mrs James) was a regular contributor to this List. In 1999, she found where Andrew Jackson Crockett was buried at Medina, TX, in the West Prong Cemetery. She has his dates as 24 Feb 1822--13 Dec 1893. Haven't seen her to post since ca 2001.

Debi LaMel is an expert on Crocketts in TX and a lot more, but we all compared notes and did not find a link to this A J Crockett.

For my own convenience, I cut-and-paste the relevant discussions to a Word document and will be happy to e-mail you a copy.
Andrew Jackson Crockett (1822-1893)

I'm very interested in corresponding with descendants of this family:

Andrew Jackson Crockett was born February 24, 1822 in Perry County, Alabama (possibly Mississippi) and died December 13, 1893 in Bandera County, Texas. He married 1st Mary A. Prewitt March 28, 1844 in Rusk County, Texas. She was born Between 1820 and 1830 and died Before 1846. He married 2nd Mary Danley October 28, 1846 in Rusk County, Texas. She was born Between 1827 and 1828 in Illinois, daughter of Andrew Danley and Nancy Burkett. He married 3rd Elizabeth Jane Danley September 29, 1858 in Dallas County, Texas. She was born January 1830 in Illinois, and died Between 1900 and 1910 in Texas, another daughter of Andrew Danley and Nancy Burkett.

There were several active message threads here around 1997-2000 concerning this family. Every email address of those who participated in the threads back then are no longer working. I'm hoping there are currently descendants of this family active on the CROCKETT message board in 2012.

I, too descend from this family, and would love to exchange information with others.

Thanks.
Looking for 2nd Husband of Mary Crockett

I am looking for the second husband's name for Mary Crockett. She married (1) Thomas Nicholson of Albemarle VA. Mr Nicholson died shortly after the marriage and his widow married (2) UNKNOWN and moved to the Ohio River area of Northern Kentucky. I am trying to determine the connection between the Crockett surname and the Sloan surname as my 2x great grandfather was a Dr. Samuel Crockett Sloan b abt 1796 in Pulaski County Kentucky. Dr Samuel Sloan married Pocahontas Rebecca Peyton Harrison of Fayette Kentucky. Her line traces to the Harrison/Carter/Cabell families of the James River plantations of Virginia, and yes of course her namesake.

Sloan /Crockett/Crockitt and Cardwell family connections

I am researching my gggrandfather Samuel Crockitt Sloan MD. I have come into possession of court documents that have both John and Crockett Cardwell mentioned in them. They are copies that were on file in the Marion County Missouri courthouse in the file on Samuel C Sloan's estate. One concerns a note that was paid to John Cardwell and David McGee. It concerned the "Steamboat Hannibal" and had been transferred to David McGee by S C Sloan. The second concerns an amount of $2,645 payable to David McGee in gold or silver dated 24 Nov 1837 and signed Crockett Cardwell, Samuel C Sloan and witnessed by Geo N Cardwell. My question is, does anyone know of the relationship between Dr Samuel Crockitt Sloan, the Crockett/Crockitt, and the Cardwell families? Does anyone have any additional information concerning Samuel C Sloan, the steamboat Hannibal and his connection to the Cardwell family? My surmise is that they were some how related evidenced by the names but I have been unable to prove the connection. I am seeking any information that will provide siblings and parents for Samuel C Sloan.

Since I last wrote, I have found records of interest. John M and Alice lived for a while in Collin Co, TX, near McKinney, though they did not remain there. They were in Claiborne Co, TN, by the time the 1900 census was taken. John M Crockett's sister Sarah E, born 28 March 1852, first married Creed Fulton Kincaid and was living in Collin Co, TX, by 1880, sharing a house with John, Alice, and baby Frank. Robert E, a single man, moved there by 1880 and married late that year. In March 1882 James M, single, followed and in 1884 married his brother Robert's wife's sister. Sarah remarried there but eventually moved to Grayson Co.

In 1880, John M and Alice were in 7th District, Collin Co, TX, near McKinney, with son Frank. John was listed as brother-in-law of Creed F Kincaid, 25, TN TN VA, whose wife was Sarah, 24, VA VA TN. Sarah ("Sallie") E Crockett was John M's sister.

Kincaid Creed F 25 Tenn Tenn Va
------- Sarah 24 Va Tenn Tenn
Crocket John 20 Va Tenn Tenn brother-in-law
------- Allice 17 Tenn Va Tenn
------- Frank 1 Va Va Tenn

The death certificate of Sarah E Edds is available. She was born 28 March 1852 and lived to be 74 years, 4 months, and 3 days. (She apparently grew 3 or 4 years younger when the census take came around. Her tombstone says 1853-1926.)

She died at her residence at 918 E Thomas St, in the 5th ward of Sherman. She was born in VA to R E Crockett and a Miss McWilliams, both born in VA. L H Edds provided the information. She was buried at the Ware Cemetery east of Prosper, TX.

Sarah E married second Lafayette Harvey Edds, Junior, around 1884 or 1885. She lived until 1 Aug 1926. He lived until 27 Dec 1927. It was a second marriage for both. His first wife was Barbara. They appeared last on the census of 1920 on Fern Street in Sherman, Grayson Co, TN where Sallie E was listed as age 67, self and parents born Virginia.

Western District, Lee Co, Virginia.
Crockett-Cowan-Briant

I am interested in the inter-related families of Crockett, Cowan and Bryant of early Jackson County, GA, and later of Coffee County and Rutherford County, TN.

Jackson County, GA marriages:
1806--John Crockett, Jr. to Mary Cowan,
12 May 1807--Elizabeth Crockett to John Briant (Bryant),
03 Dec 1807--Stewart Cowan to Mary Stuart,
1809--Stephen Bryant to Mary A. Green.

Mary Cowan Crockett and Stewart Cowan were siblings, children of William Cowan and Sarah Stewart Cowan. Ca. 1815, these 2 families moved to what was to become Coffee County, TN (then Franklin Co.) The 2 families lived adjoining, near what later became the Stephenson Community. When Grundy County, TN was formed from Coffee County, the Cowans ended up on the Grundy County side and the Crocketts on the Coffee County side. The old Crockett Cemetery is within a Cowan land grant.

My hunch is that John Crockett, Jr. was a brother to the Elizabth Crockett who married John Bryant who was a brother to the Stephen Bryant--all of Jackson County, GA.

Now here is where it gets interesting: In 1832, William M. Cowan (son of Stewart Cowan and Mary Stuart) married Mary M. Briant in Rutherford Co., TN (just north of the Coffee/Grundy area.) There was a John Briant/Bryant in the county at that time. I am wondering if his marriage to Mary Briant was not just that to a random family, but within the connection of associated families that went back to GA days (they would not have been cousins, but would have had cousins in common.) To top it off, the oldest child of William M. Cowan and Mary Briant Cowan was named John Stephen Cowan--a common enough name, to be sure, but if my scenario is right, it would be after Mary's father and uncle.

I have much information to share on the Crockett-Cowan connection, and am interested in exploring possible Briant/Bryant connections.

Terry J. Cowan (tcowan at jcowaninc.com)

Shawn David Crockett,

Looking at your postings, a faint bell rang somewhere in my mind and I have checked out a hunch. As you certainly know, a number of Crocketts were buried on the Claiborne and Hancock Co's, TN, side of the VA/TN line, including one John M Crockett [28 March 1857-3 March 1911] who was buried at the Lingar Cemetery in Harrogate. There apparently was some moving about between the Lee Co, VA, and the Tennessee line. I have been looking at your posting from 27 March 2006 where you have your line as:

Samuel Crockett (great-great-great-great-great-great grandfather)
Andrew Crockett (great-great-great-great-great grandfather)
Robert Elliot Crockett Sr. (great-great-great-great grandfather)
Robert Elliot Crockett Jr (great-great-great grandfather)
John M. Crockett (great-great grandfather)
William Franklin Crockett (great grandfather)
Ray Crockett (grand father)
Dennis Crockett (father)
Shawn Crockett

But I also see where you have an Alec or Alex Crockett as your great-great-great grandfather, buried in Crockett Holler in VA, father of John Manuel Crockett.

I think the first version is the correct one. You be the judge.

Although notoriously wrong in their misplacing of Davy Crockett into an old French lineage, there is much good to say about The Crockett Family and Connecting Lines, by Janie Preston Collup French and Zella Armstrong (authors' copyright 1928, printed Bristol, TN), volume 5 of the Notable Southern Families series. They collected whatever people sent them and tried to organize it all.

As a son of Robert Elliott Crockett, Junior: "12. John Mallard, b. Mar. 18, 1857; d. 1912. Born and died at Gibson Station, Lee Co., Va. Was a farmer, carpenter, cabinetmaker and blacksmith. M. Alice Littrell, dau. of John A. Littrell and Sarah Hamilton of Harrogate, Tenn.
Two sons and three daughters, all living except one son who
died in early life. His son Edward Crockett served overseas
in the World War; m. and now resides in McKinney, Texas.
His three daughters married and also reside in Texas." Obviously, there is a major league issue here.

Immediately follows:
13. James Monroe Morrison (known as "J. M."), b. Sept.
25, 1860, at Gibson Station, Lee Co., Va.; m. Dec. 7, 1884,
Sirena Burke (b. May 11, 1863), a sister of Robert Evans
Crockett's wife, and a dau. of Francis Marion Burke.

THIS ENDS THE LINE OF ROBERT ELLIOTT CROCKETT,
OF GIBSON STATION, LEE Co., VA.

Since what is written about the John Mallard [which middle name I also question; I suspect it was Mallory] family is wrong, I asked, To whom else might it apply? And I concluded and am suggesting that the lines were out of order when printed. What they are describing is the family of "13. James Monroe Morrison (known as "J. M.")" who moved to McKinney Collin Co, TX.

James M Crockett and Sirena Crockett resided in or near McKinney, Collin Co, TX. They were the parents of six children, one of whom died young. The two surviving sons were Cecil [Sept 1888] and William Edwin, called "Ed", who was born 24 Sept 1891. The three daughters were Daisy [Aug 1885], Myrtle [June 1894], and Mary A [ca 1906/07]. As of 1900, Sirena been married 16 years and had borne 5 children of which 4 were living. As of the 1910 census, they had been married 26 years [since about 1883/84], a first marriage for both, and Sirena had borne 6 children of whom one was deceased. As of 1920, Jim M Crockett, 60, and Sirena, 55, were on the farm they owned in Collin Co, TX. At home were Edd [sic], 27, and Mary, 12.

The death certificate for J M Crockett, retired farmer, gave his age at death on 8 July 1941 as 80 years 9 months and 13 days. DOB 25 Sept 1860. Born Virginia. Parents born Virginia. Robert Elliott Crockett and Harriet Bales. Address 712 W Lamar St, McKinney, Collin Co, TX. Resident 15 years. Informant: R L Crockett, son. Buried at Pecan Grove Cemetery.

The death certificate for Sirena Catherine Crockett, widow, gave her age at death on 21 Jan 1955 as 90 years 8 months and 12 days. DOB 9 May 1864. Born Mo. Father born Tenn. Francis Marvin Burk. Mother unknown. Address 712 W Lamar St, McKinney, Collin Co, TX. Resident 85 years. Informant: Ed Crockett. Buried at Ware Cemetery (3 miles east of Prosper, TX).

There is a birth record for William Edward Crockett born and recorded 24 September 1891 in Collin Co, TX. It is not online.

There is a draft registration dated 5 June 1917 for William Edwin Crockett of Prosper, Collin Co, TX, but he gave his birthdate as 24 Sept 1892. He was single and age 25. He gave as military experience "Sergent", "Texas A&M", 2 1/3 or 2 1/5 years, "A&M School". He was described as being tall and stout and having brown eyes and black hair.

If my explanation makes sense, then nothing prevents our accepting John M as a direct descendant of Samuel and Esther Crockett. And a number of dates and places are out there to fill in.

This condenses about nine pages of notes which would make this too large for a posting. I'll e-mail my documentation.

All best,
Don Maring
familydog@comcast.net
Claiborne County Crockett's

My name is Shawn Crockett and I am a second generation born outside of TN. I live in Michigan. I have my line traced back through the DNA testing I did back a few years ago. I'm trying to get back and get connected with kin down in that area. What I can tell you thus far is that my grandfather, Ray Crockett was born in Forge Ridge area in like 1919. My father Dennis was born in Monroe, MI in 1949 and I was born here. My line from my grandfather is Frank Crockett, Robert Jr., Robert, Andrew, Samuel. If anyone can help me inthis matter I would very much appreciate it.

Very Respectfully,

Shawn David Crockett

Hey Mike,

Wow, I didn't remember even posting that but we are in deed related if your ancestor is Clara Belle Peake (b. Jan. 21, 1857 in Rushville, Indiana) married to Oscar Crockett and who are parents of Charles and Ester.

A lot has happened since my posting of 2000. My mom (daughter of Charles Carver Crockett) gave me Clara Belles scrapbook that appears like it was started in the 19th century. It's loaded with writings, photographs, letters, receipts, etc. all related to the Peakes & Crocketts. There's a Civil War reunion ribbon of her fathers (Benjamin Peake) from 1901. He was with the 33rd Indiana Wildcats.

I would certainly be interested in any information you have and would reciprocate with copies of the contents of the scrapbook. It's a true treasure trove of information regarding the Peakes and Crocketts.

In the scrapbook she signs her name as both Clarabelle and Clara Belle.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Dan Pinnell
Linville, Va

Hi, I am related to a Charles C. Crockett of Indiana by way of his mother, Clara Belle Peake. She was married to Oscar League Crockett. If this is you line I have a lot of information. I read your posting on Ancestry.com. I do not post my tree on Ancestry but will freely trade data with kin.
Thanks,

Mike Morgan, Pacific Grove, California
mikemorgan@redshift.com

Charlie L Crockett son of B F Crockett

Charlie Crockett was the son of Benjamin Franklin Crockett, born in Alabama. He had a twin brother named William. His mother was Francis "Fanny" Hackney. Charlie married Minnie Lee Hendrix. They had three children: Walter, Nora and Howard. The 1900 census shows the family was living in Lanette Town, Chambers County, Alabama. Family rumour has that Charlie Crockett died somewhere around 1903 in either Alabama or Georgia. He suppossedly died of typhoid while in prison or jail. If anyone has any information on this I would greatly appreciate it. Thank You.

Sometimes if one person replies, it gets more attention for your message.

Another way to get more replies is to specify/guess/approximate more locations, as well as dates for the events.

I did search www.familysearch.org
and rootsweb.com
but found nothing for lester crockett, maybe lester was actually his middle name? Have you ever found him on any document anywhere. If you tell us one document, we can maybe find others easier.
-
When I googled lester crockett battle of Bulge I found your message here. So it can be found by someone who doesn't know it's there.
~~Best wishes, Tuck

The only info I have is her appx DOB and state.

I do however also have some female relatives (my grandmother and two aunts) who have an all female DNA line that stretches back to Ruth, in case anyone here is interested in the Crockett DNA project.
