I have an old photograph of a young woman, identified only as "Madaline Croft." Photo was taken at Field Block studio in Tampa, Florida. I am not good at determining the time of the photo, but would guess the turn of the last century. Would love to get this into the hands of family. Will be happy to email a scan so you can view, to determine if she is your Madaline Croft.

Since this was before I was born I can only remember of the family speaking about Annie Croft. She had two sons, Charles and Lester and I do believe one was a state trooper.

Ursula’s prior husbands were Samuel Streeter, Samuel Hosier and William Robinson.

In that same year 1673, in Connecticutt, Griffin third married Dorcas French Peake widow of CHRISTOPHER PEAKE, daughter of Thomas French(ca Oct 1584-late 1639) & Susan Riddlesdale(ca 1584-Aug 1658). Born ca 1614 in Assington, Suffolk. Dorcas was baptized in St. Edmund’s, Assington, on 31 Jul 1614. Dorcas died on 30 Dec 1697 in Roxbury, MA

Comments: As a result of the second marriage of Griffin Croft, to Ursula, the daughter of Henry Adams, several dates for vital events in this family are found in a Streeter family Bible. In that record the death date for Griffin Craft is given as 21 Aug 1690, whereas his death date from his inventory was given as 4 Oct 1689, and the inventory was taken on 27 Nov 1689, so the 1690 date must be wrong. The death date for Ursula Adams is recorded in the Bible as 20 Feb 1649, which is wrong by decades, and the year of death of 1679 is an editorial suggestion. When the date of a vital event is found only in this Bible, then, it should be treated with some skepticism.
Also, among his descendants, in eastern Massachusetts ‘Craft’ was favored, but in western Massachusetts and Connecticut ‘Crafts’ was more common.

Estate: In his will of 18 May 1689 Griffin Crafts bequeathed to wife Dorcas £7 10s. and "one book of Mr. Girren's works," to son Moses Craft £10 "be~sides what he oweth me already and all my wearing clothes," to son-in-law Nathaniel Wilson "besides fifteen pounds that he oweth me already five pounds more," to son-in-law Edward Adams £5, to daughter Hannah Wilson £10 if she outlive her husband, to daughter Abegail Adams £10 (in same manner as to Hannah Wilson), to grandchild Ephraim Craft a cow at age twenty-one, and to son Samuel Craft (executor) "all my housing and lands & estate of what kind & nature soever ... excepting the movables in the house"; signed by mark (he was blind several years), witnessed by Joseph Griggs and William Gareis, and proved 9 November 1690.
Administration on the estate of Griffin Crofts was granted on 27 January 1690/1 to "Elizabeth Crofts, widow, and Samuel Crofts, son of Samuel Crofts, late of Roxbury aforesaid, deceased".
The inventory of "Griffin Croft late of Roxbury who died upon the fourth day of October" 1689 was taken 27 November 1689 by Samuel Ruggles Sr., Joseph Griggs and Samuel Gore, and totalled £288 10s., of which £250 was real estate:
"dwelling house with outhousing, about 7 acres of meadow before the door together with the orchard," £120; and "about 33 acres of land adjoining to said orchard & meadows," £130
I dont know if this line is closely connected to my Croft line, but I AM SURE that the Croft/Craft families in Virginia and Maryland are related. I feel strongly that we need to go back farther and we will find a group of Croft/Craft/Kraft siblings that have immigrated together or helped each other immigrate over time. I think what we are seeing in these same names being so close for each family is the 2nd cousins. I know we will find the direct tie in time. Be sure to post whatever we find here so others can help up tie these people together.

Thank you for sharing your info with me.

Patricia Croft Robertson
Bedford, Va
ruthschild4@yahoo.com

Based on Lord Croft's sister's info on Griffin, he sailed to Boston in 1630 coming from Gloucestershire or Warwickshire. I did a cursory search and found this right away. Based on the info, I'd say the first one is a sure bet:

Name: Griffin Croft
Year: 1630
Place: Roxbury, Massachusetts
Family Members: Wife Alice; Daughter Hannah
Source Publication Code: 116.1
Primary Immigrant: Croft, Griffin
Annotation: Date and place of first residence in New England.
This is the Croft Arms with wivern at top of crest. I have not found the complete acheivement yet with the sheild supporters but if memory serves me correctly, it is supported by a black wivern or dragon on the right side and a white unicorn or horse on the left.

J.R. Croft of Midway, Barnwell, SC - 1880 Census

This is a doozie...

My great-grandfather was William Eston Croft, Sr. (b. 25 Dec 1885 in SC; d. 20 Feb 1974 at Graniteville, Aiken, SC).

His parents were J.R. Croft and Julia Josephine Myers (b. 5 Sep 1865 at Barnwell Co., SC; d. 20 Nov 1918 at Salley, Aiken, SC).

All I know about William's father (J.R.) is that he appears on the 1880 Census with Josephine, his age is listed as 19 years old, he's a farmer, and he and Josephine were married within the year. The couple is enumerated next to S.P. and Sarah Croft.

Family members say my great-grandfather refused to talk about his dad, believing he'd run out on the family, so my knowledge is severely limited. I appreciate any pointers!

I just found this message. I do think your gggrandfather was the brother of my ggrandmother Clara McNeill who died in 1919 leaving two children. Her husband, my ggrandfather (Charles Randolph Thomas) became estranged from the family for some reasons unknown to all of us. Clara's mother was Mary King Norwood McNeill. Is there any information you can offer?

Going over the census (1870 Washington, Ohio) records, you'll see a Dewalt Beglin living with Peter and Mary (Beglin). Dewalt is listed as inferm at about 89 years old, born in Darmstadt! I'd like to find out more about this guy too. I found Mary Beglin's ship manifest listed as 18 years old with a "relative" Alley listed as 28. Could be her older brother? They arrived in 1847, Peter didn't arrive until 1854. Virginia Croft, Leo's wife (my grandparents, son of Joseph & Mary-HA!) said that we had some guy in the family who was a captain of a ship. Dewalt's online info shows multiple ship crossings between about 1809-1850. What was he doing? That's all I know. Napoleon ran over Prussia/Germany in the early 1800s, hence the listings between France and Germany in many records. Most likely they were of Germanic decent and of French citizenry. I would be anxious to get any photos of Peter, Joseph or Mary Croft. I have some photos of old Leo and Virginia Croft available.

Update : German Crofts that ended up in Virginia

I have reasonable proof that Daniel Craft spelled his name as CRAFT and not CROFT. That Daniel's father was George W. Krafft (later Craft) from Germany who settled in Penn. I am not sure of the name of George's wife. Daniel and wife Mary Hamilton had sons Jacob Craft who migrated until finally settling in Wasco Oregon, another son Philip, Daniel, George W. Craft and David Bernard Croft also several daughters and probably more sons name unknown. David Bernard used the Croft spelling. David B. Croft was born in Botetourt, moved to Franklin after the C War where his children were born, then moved to Big Lick later Roanoke City Va.

David B. Croft always listed his father Daniel as having been born in Prussia. Some accounts say Daniel was born in Penn. It seems that all Daniel and Mary Hamilton's children were born in Botetourt Co Va.

David Bernard Croft/Craft Botetourt, Franklin, Roanoke Va.

I am looking for other Croft researchers in the Roanoke Va region. David Bernard Croft had settled in Franklin Co Va after marrying just after the Civil War. His wife was Caroline Chafin dt. of John Chafin and Mary Catherine Dowdy. Any tips on very early Krafft, Krofft, Kraft, Craft, Croft may very well be on this same family.

Earliest ancestor George W. Craft (Krafft), son Daniel Craft and Mary Hamilton, son Samuel H. Croft and wife Matilda Mae Weaver, dt of John Weaver and Lucy V.Dillon

I am thrilled to connect with another Croft! Do you mind sharing what you know about the German Croft family?

My earliest known ancestor was George W. Craft (Krafft) who was from Germany. His wife is not verified, but may have been a Watson. His son Daniel Craft came down from Penn and settled in Botetourt Co Va. Daniel married Mary Hamilton in Botetourt and had many children and his son David B. Croft was my ggrandfather. David was born somewhere from 1814-18. I think there is a Watson connection because David B's son, SAmuel Houston Croft named a son Everett Watson as did another of David B's son's David Sneed Croft. I have history on this branch if you want to exchange info. My email is ruthschild4 if you prefer that. PS my brother was named John after a long line of John Crofts in this family.

Ancestors of Griffin Croft (born 1600 at Croft Castle in Herefordshire England)

I am a descendant of Griffin Croft, who was born at Croft Castle in 1600 and sailed to America on the Arbela with Winthrop's party of colonists. I was wondering if any Crofts on here know who Griffin Croft's ancestors were, because my trail ends at his birth. Also I would love to see Croft Family Crest featuring the "wivern" if anyone can post an image of it!
